Will land circulation sway "grain orientation"? The impact of rural land circulation on farmers' agricultural planting structures.

ABSTRACT: This study calculates the effect of different types of land circulation on farmers' decision-making regarding agricultural planting structure, using field survey data involving 1,120 households in Hubei province, China, and PSM (propensity score matching) and GPSM (general propensity score matching) methods. Results from PSM showed that land circulation could significantly increase farmers' decisions to plant food crops, which confirms the positive effect of rural land circulation on the "grain orientation" of crop planting structure. Results from GPSM further indicate that the total land circulation, the paddy land circulation, and the dry land circulation all have significantly positive effects on planting structure adjustment towards "grain orientation." Additionally, planting structure adjustment towards "grain orientation" increases as the scale of land circulation increases, and the former shows a higher rate of increase than the latter, which confirms that rural land circulation facilitates an adjustment in structure towards planting food crops.

Project description:The arable land abandonment caused by the large-scale non-agricultural transfer of labour has attracted substantial attention from all walks of life in China. Promoting improvement in human settlement environment can accelerate the construction of infrastructure, ameliorate grassroots organization and enhance management capacities while simultaneously decelerating agricultural production costs. High level of human settlement environment can also attract the labour force to return, stimulate the vitality of rural elements and endogenous powers. Then, can improving rural human settlement environment alleviate the phenomenon of arable land abandonment caused by non-agricultural labour transfer? In order to answer this question, based on the micro-survey data of 1325 households in 5 provinces of China, this paper uses the Tobit model to empirically test the effects of rural human settlement environment and non-agricultural transfer of labour on arable land abandoned. The results revealed that rural human settlement can alleviate the arable land abandonment caused by non-agricultural transfer of labour to a certain extent. In particular, the improvement of rural human settlement environment that mainly based on the infrastructure construction and organizational management level, has significantly alleviated the arable land abandonment caused by the non-agricultural transfer of labour. Heterogeneity analysis disclosed that, compared with mountainous and hilly areas, the improvement of rural human settlement environment had a more obvious mitigation effect on arable land abandonment in plain areas. Promoting infrastructure construction and strengthening organizational management ability were effective ways to alleviate arable land abandonment in plain areas. Farmer households with high place attachment level were more likely to be attracted by the improvement of rural human settlement environment to return to their hometown, so as to make use of arable land resources. Improving infrastructure, strengthening organizational management level, and promoting cultural and community development were the main measures for farmer households with high place attachment level to reduce arable land abandonment. In addition, there were significant differences in arable land abandonment and its driving factors in different regions. In the central and eastern regions or major grain-producing areas, improving human settlement environment had a significant mitigation effect on arable land abandonment. Therefore, improving the rural human settlement environment according to local conditions, promoting the supportive policy will be inclined to mountainous and hilly areas, enhancing the attractiveness of rural areas, encouraging farmers with high place attachment level to return to their hometowns for employment and entrepreneurship, and accelerating the cultivation of new types of agricultural operators, which will help alleviate the arable land abandonment caused by non-agricultural transfer of labour.

Project description:Agriculture, the basis of a country's economic and social development, is restricted by natural climate conditions. Characteristic agriculture varies as different regions have diverse climate conditions. Due to its outstanding drought tolerance and adaptability in arid and semi-arid marginal areas and barren saline-alkali land, the jujube fruit is considered an important characteristic of agriculture in nine provinces along the Yellow River in China. It plays an important role in economic development and farmers' income; however, due to the constraints of capital, technology, price fluctuations and other aspects, farmers in these provinces are unwilling to invest in jujubes and the further development of the jujube industry is restricted. Based on this, this study selected 11 factors that may affect farmers' willingness to input in jujube as variables; the influence of these independent variables was quantitatively analysed using the survey data of 984 farmers in main producing provinces with SPSSAU software and principal component analysis method. Three principal components were extracted according to each variable's characteristic roots and variance interpretation rate, and the influencing factors were classified into three factors according to the load coefficient of these principal components. Three relevant components are agricultural incentive measures (technical training, agricultural loans, agricultural insurance and government subsidies), jujube planting input and output (average income and input cost per acre) and jujube sales status (sales difficulty and sales income trend). Furthermore, the multiple linear regression model was used to perform regression analysis on the eight key factors involved under the three categories and the results showed that R2 was 0.756, p values were all <0.01 and VIF values were all <5. The results indicated that the model was effective and verified that these eight key factors impacted farmers' willingness to plant jujubes. This study aimed to quantitatively describe each independent variable's influence on farmers' willingness to invest in jujube planting and propose corresponding incentive measures according to their influence effects. The study can provide new ideas for improving farmers' willingness to invest in jujube and a practical basis for the agricultural sector to implement accurate policies and has direct guiding significance and value for promoting the development of the jujube industry. Meanwhile, the results also have a certain reference value for the research of fruit planting input in other regions.

Project description:There is a general drive to reduce pesticide use owing to the potential negative effects of pesticides on the environment and human health. The EU Commission, for example, through its "Farm to Fork Strategy," has proposed to decrease the use of hazardous chemical pesticides by 50% by 2030. In addition, smallholder farmers in low-income countries do not always follow pesticide safety precautions. This necessitates the introduction of low-risk crop protection strategies also suited for these farmers. Agricultural biologicals can substitute for, or at least partially replace hazardous chemical pesticides. While the market for and use of biologicals is growing quickly in industrialized countries, this practice remains limited in sub-Saharan Africa. To understand the reason behind the low adoption of biologicals, this study examined the knowledge, attitudes, and practices toward biologicals among 150 smallholder farmers in the Chole district in Ethiopia. All farmers used chemical pesticides and/or inorganic fertilizers to protect crops, improve yields, and comply with government regulations. The use of biologicals was, however, restricted to one group of biologicals, bio-fertilizers, which approximately 60% of farmers used, and no use of biologicals for plant protection was reported. Even though the understanding of the concept of biologicals was deemed high among respondents, the majority (90%) did not identify biologicals as safer alternatives to conventional agricultural inputs. More than half of the respondents (54%) did not recommend biologicals as safer alternatives to their colleagues. Nevertheless, even if the responding farmers did not perceive biologicals as risk-free, they had a positive attitude towards biologicals when it came to producing healthy food and increasing crop yields and incomes. In comparison to the positive attitude, farmers' knowledge and practice of biologicals were generally low; thus, efforts are needed to create awareness among farmers.
