Solvothermal Preparation of a Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework for Highly Sensitive Discrimination of Nitrofurantoin and l-Tyrosine.

ABSTRACT: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been rapidly developed for their broad applications in many different chemistry and materials fields. In this work, a multi-dentate building block 5-(4-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl)-isophthalic acid (H3L) containing tetrazole and carbolxylate moieties was employed for the synthesis of a two-dimensional (2D) lanthanide MOF [La(HL)(DMF)2(NO3)] (DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide) (1) under solvothermal condition. The fluorescent sensing application of 1 was investigated. 1 exhibits high sensitivity recognition for antibiotic nitrofurantoin (Ksv: 3.0 × 103 M-1 and detection limit: 17.0 μM) and amino acid l-tyrosine (Ksv: 1.4 × 104 M-1 and detection limit: 3.6 μM). This work provides a feasible detection platform of 2D MOFs for highly sensitive discrimination of antibiotics and amino acids.

Color-tunable lanthanide metal-organic framework gels.

Project description:Fluorescence significantly improves the performance of gels. Various strategies, such as embedment and crosslinking, have been used to integrate extrinsic luminophores into gel systems, but the procedures are usually complex. Herein, for the first time, we report gels with intrinsic and tunable emission color prepared with 5-boronoisophthalic acid (5-bop) and Eu3+, Tb3+, and/or Dy3+ similar to the procedure for the preparation of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The single-metal gels exhibit intrinsic trichromatic fluorescence, due to which full-color emissions are readily obtained by tuning the type and/or ratio of Ln3+ ions to prepare mixed-metal gels. The emission is governed by an antenna effect and is thus excited with single-wavelength at 275 nm. The nucleation-growth mechanism reveals that the Ln3+ ions and 5-bop produce separated layers, which then grow anisotropically to form nanoribbons by high coordinated valence of Ln3+ ions and biased carboxyl distribution as well as steric hindrance and hydrogen bonds of the boric acid group in 5-bop. The nanoribbons entangle together to generate chemical-physical hybrid gels. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of gels with inherent and tunable emission color. Due to their optical and viscoelastic properties, the gels have numerous potential applications such as tunable emission and multi-target detection.

Solvothermal Synthesis of a Novel Calcium Metal-Organic Framework: High Temperature and Electrochemical Behaviour.

Project description:The rapid growth in the field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) over recent years has highlighted their high potential in a variety of applications. For biological and environmental applications MOFs with low toxicity are vitally important to avoid any harmful effects. For this reason, Ca-based MOFs are highly desirable owing to their low cost and high biocompatibility. Useful Ca MOFs are still rare owing to the ionic character and large size of the Ca2+ ion tending to produce dense phases. Presented here is a novel Ca-based MOF containing 2,3-dihyrdoxyterephthalate (2,3-dhtp) linkers Ca(2,3-dhtp)(H2O) (SIMOF-4). The material undergoes a phase transformation on heating, which can be followed by variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction. The structure of the high temperature form was obtained using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The electrochemical properties of SIMOF-4 were also investigated for use in a Na ion battery.

A New Microporous Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework with a Wide Range of pH Linear Response.

Project description:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have attracted extensive attention because of their structural adjustability and wide optical function applications. However, MOFs with a wide linear pH response and stable framework structures in acidic or alkaline solutions are rare to date. Here, we used 4,4',4″-s-triazine-2,4,6-triyltribenzoate (H3TATB) as an organic ligand, coordinated with lanthanide ions (Eu3+/Tb3+), and synthesized a new metal-organic framework material. The material has a porous three-dimensional square framework structure and emits bright red or green fluorescence under 365 nm UV light. The carboxyl group of the ligand is prone to protonation in an acidic environment, and negatively charged OH- and ligand (TATB3-) have a competitive effect in an alkaline environment, which could affect the coordination ability of ligand. The luminescence degree of the framework decreases with the increase in the degree of acid and base. In particular, such fluorescence changes have a wide linear response (pH = 0-14), which can be used as a potential fluorescence sensing material for pH detection.

A water-stable lanthanide metal-organic framework for fluorimetric detection of ferric ions and tryptophan.

Project description:The preparation of a highly water stable and porous lanthanide metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles (denoted SUMOF-7II; SU refers to Stockholm University) is described. SUMOF-7II was synthesized starting from the tritopic linker of 2,4,6-tri-p-carboxyphenyl pyridine (H3L2) and La(III) as metal clusters. SUMOF-7II forms a stable dispersion and displays high fluorescence emission with small variation over the pH range of 6 to 12. Its fluorescence is selectively quenched by Fe(III) ions compared to other metal ions. The intensity of the fluorescene emission drops drops linearly in 16.6-167 μM Fe(III) concentration range, and Stern-Volmer plots are linear. The limit of detection (LOD) is 16.6 μM (at an S/N ratio of >3). This indicator probe can also be used for selective detection of tryptophan among several amino acids. Compared to the free linker H3L2, SUMOF-7II offers improved sensitivity and selectivity of the investigated species. Graphical abstractA water-stable porous lanthanide metal-organic framework SUMOF-7II (La) has shown to be an excellent probe for the detection of ferric ions among other metal ions, and tryptophan among other amino acids in aqueous solution. The new probe displays high and stable fluorescence signal in a wide pH range (6-12).

Preparation of Magnetic MIL-68(Ga) Metal-Organic Framework and Heavy Metal Ion Removal Application.

Project description:A magnetic metal-organic framework nanocomposite (magnetic MIL-68(Ga)) was synthesized through a "one pot" reaction and used for heavy metal ion removal. The morphology and elemental properties of the nanocomposite were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), as well as zeta potential. Moreover, the factors affecting the adsorption capacity of the nanocomposite, including time, pH, metal ion type and concentration, were studied. It was found that the adsorption capacity of magnetic MIL-68(Ga) for Pb2+ and Cu2+ was 220 and 130 mg/g, respectively. Notably, the magnetic adsorbents could be separated easily using an external magnetic field, regenerated by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-Na2) and reused three times, in favor of practical application. This study provides a reference for the rapid separation and purification of heavy metal ions from wastewater.

Evaluating Solvothermal and Mechanochemical Routes towards the Metal-Organic Framework Mg2(m-dobdc).

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks bearing coordinatively unsaturated Mg(II) sites are promising materials for gas storage, chemical separations, and drug delivery due to their low molecular weights and lack of toxicity. However, there remains a limited number of such MOFs reported in the literature. Herein, we investigate the gas sorption properties of the understudied framework Mg2(m-dobdc) (dobdc4- = 4,6-dioxido-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) synthesized under both solvothermal and mechanochemical conditions. Both materials are found to be permanently porous, as confirmed by 77 K N2 adsorption measurements. In particular, Mg2(m-dobdc) synthesized under mechanochemical conditions using exogenous organic base displays one of the highest capacities reported to date (6.14 mmol/g) for CO2 capture in a porous solid under simulated coal flue gas conditions (150 mbar, 40 °C). As such, mechanochemically synthesized Mg2(m-dobdc) represents a promising new framework for applications requiring high gas adsorption capacities in a porous solid.

Sensitive impedimetric detection of troponin I with metal-organic framework composite electrode.

Project description:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for biosensing applications due to their large surface to volume ratio, easy assembly as thin films, and better biocompatibility than other nanomaterials. Their application in electrochemical biosensing devices can be realized by integrating them with other conducting materials, like polyaniline (PANI). In the present research, a composite of a copper-MOF (i.e., Cu3(BTC)2) with PANI has been explored to develop an impedimetric sensor for cardiac marker troponin I (cTnI). The solvothermally synthesized Cu3(BTC)2/PANI composite has been coated as a thin layer on the screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPE). This electroconductive thin film was conjugated with anti-cTnI antibodies. The above formed immunosensor has allowed the impedimetric detection of cTnI antigen over a clinically important concentration range of 1-400 ng mL-1. The whole process of antigen analysis could be completed within 5 min. The detection method was specific to cTnI even in the co-presence of other possibly interfering proteins.

Highly Sensitive Capsaicin Electrochemical Sensor Based on Bimetallic Metal-Organic Framework Nanocage.

Project description:The content of capsaicin can be used as exotic markers of kitchen recycled oil. In this study, a bimetallic MOF nanocage (FeIII-HMOF-5) was successfully prepared by a one-step solvothermal method and used for electrode modification to prepare a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for rapid detection of capsaicin. Capsaicin could be selectively immobilized onto the FeIII-HMOF-5 surface during infiltrating adsorption, thus exhibiting very excellent sensing performance. The detection conditions of the sensor were optimized. Under optimum conditions, the electrochemical sensor can linearly detect capsaicin in the range between 1-60 μM with a detection limit of 0.4 μM. In addition, the proposed electrochemical sensor showed excellent stability and selectivity. The real sample tests indicated the proposed electrochemical sensor was comparable to conventional UV spectrophotometry.

Preparation and Characterization of Metal-Organic Framework Coatings for Improving Protein Crystallization Screening.

Project description:Modifying crystallization plates can significantly impact the success rate and quality of protein crystal growth, making it a helpful strategy in protein crystallography. However, appropriate methods for preparing nano-sized particles with a high specific surface area and strategies for applying these nanoparticles to form suitable coatings on crystallization plate surfaces still need to be clarified. Here, we utilized both an ultrasonic crusher and a high-pressure homogenizer to create a nano metal-organic framework (MOF), specifically HKUST-1, and introduced a solvent evaporation method for producing MOF coatings on 96-well crystallization plates to induce protein crystal growth. The morphology of MOF coatings on the resin surface of the plate well was characterized using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Compared to the control group, crystallization screening experiments on nine proteins confirmed the effectiveness of plates with MOF coatings. Applying MOF coatings to crystallization plates is an easy-to-use, time-efficient, and potent tool for initiating crystallization experiments.

On-surface preparation of coordinated lanthanide-transition-metal clusters.

Project description:The study of lanthanide (Ln)-transition-metal (TM) heterometallic clusters which play key roles in various high-tech applications is a rapid growing field of research. Despite the achievement of numerous Ln-TM cluster compounds comprising one Ln atom, the synthesis of Ln-TM clusters containing multiple Ln atoms remains challenging. Here, we present the preparation and self-assembly of a series of Au-bridged heterometallic clusters containing multiple cerium (Ce) atoms via on-surface coordination. By employing different pyridine and nitrile ligands, the ordered coordination assemblies of clusters containing 2, 3 and 4 Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms are achieved on Au(111) and Au(100), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Density functional theory calculations uncover the indispensable role of the bridging Au adatoms in constructing the multi-Ce-containing clusters by connecting the Ce atoms via unsupported Ce-Au bonds. These findings demonstrate on-surface coordination as an efficient strategy for preparation and organization of the multi-Ln-containing heterometallic clusters.
