Students' experience of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic: A province-wide survey study.

ABSTRACT: Online learning is currently adopted by educational institutions worldwide to provide students with ongoing education during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though online learning research has been advancing in uncovering student experiences in various settings (i.e., tertiary, adult, and professional education), very little progress has been achieved in understanding the experience of the K-12 student population, especially when narrowed down to different school-year segments (i.e., primary and secondary school students). This study explores how students at different stages of their K-12 education reacted to the mandatory full-time online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. For this purpose, we conducted a province-wide survey study in which the online learning experience of 1,170,769 Chinese students was collected from the Guangdong Province of China. We performed cross-tabulation and Chi-square analysis to compare students' online learning conditions, experiences, and expectations. Results from this survey study provide evidence that students' online learning experiences are significantly different across school years. Foremost, policy implications were made to advise government authorises and schools on improving the delivery of online learning, and potential directions were identified for future research into K-12 online learning.

Project description:IntroductionDuring the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly all educational institutions globally had to eventually embrace the maneuver of transferring to nearly 100% online learning as a new routine for different curricula. Although many students in developing countries such as Kenya are only experiencing the exclusive online learning approach for the first time, research on students' experience and satisfaction with COVID-19-imposed online learning is largely lacking. Thus, this study examined the effect of online-learning experiences on satisfaction in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kenya. The mediating role of students' preference on the relationship between online-learning experience and satisfaction was also examined.MethodsA web-based survey involving 501 respondents was analyzed using IBM® SPSS® and AMOS software platforms. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the relationships.Results and discussionResults showed that 80% of participants indicated their preference for in-person learning as against 20% for online learning. Students' satisfaction-SS had a significant positive correlation with online classroom perceived quality-OCPQ, acquisition of self-confidence-ASC, teaching performance and engagement-TPE, and preference for online learning-POL but a negative correlation with internet access and cost-IAC. Moreover, while POL positively correlated with OCPQ, ASC, and TPE, it negatively correlated with IAC. Both the structural model for the main effect and the mediation model provided a good fit and confirmed these relationships. Student preference had a significant effect on satisfaction and played a significant mediating role in the relationship between online-learning experience and satisfaction. These findings shed light on the underlying factors that explain students' online learning satisfaction and provide guidelines for universities and policymakers to make better decisions that enhance students' online-learning experience and satisfaction.

Project description:BackgroundTo prepare key stakeholders for the global COVID-19 vaccination rollout, the World Health Organization and partners developed online vaccination training packages. The online course was launched in December 2020 on the OpenWHO learning platform. This paper presents the findings of an evaluation of this course.ObjectiveThe aim of this evaluation was to provide insights into user experiences and challenges, measure the impact of the course in terms of knowledge gained, and anticipate potential interest in future online vaccination courses.MethodsThe primary source of data was the anonymized information on course participants, enrollment, completion, and scores from the OpenWHO platform's statistical data and metric reporting system. Data from the OpenWHO platform were analyzed from the opening of the courses in mid-December 2020 to mid-April 2021. In addition, a learner feedback survey was sent by email to all course participants to complete within a 3-week period (March 19 to April 9, 2021). The survey was designed to determine the perceived strengths and weaknesses of the training packages and to understand barriers to access.ResultsDuring the study period, 53,593 learners enrolled in the course. Of them, 30,034 (56.0%) completed the course, which is substantially higher than the industry benchmark of 5%-10% for a massive open online course (MOOC). Overall, learners averaged 76.5% on the prequiz compared to 85% on the postquiz, resulting in an increase in average score of 9%. A total of 2019 learners from the course participated in the survey. Nearly 98% (n=1647 fully agree, n=308 somewhat agree; N=1986 survey respondents excluding missing values) of respondents fully or somewhat agreed that they had more confidence in their ability to support COVID-19 vaccination following completion of this course.ConclusionsThe online vaccine training was well received by the target audience, with a measurable impact on knowledge gained. The key benefits of online training were the convenience, self-paced nature, access to downloadable material, and ability to replay material, as well as an increased ability to concentrate. Online training was identified as a timely, cost-effective way of delivering essential training to a large number of people to prepare for the COVID-19 vaccination rollout.

Project description:The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted traditional face-to-face human physiology teaching for students at the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, Thailand since February 2020. An online curriculum for both lectures and laboratory sessions was developed to continue the education. This work compared the effectiveness of online physiology labs to the traditional onsite counterparts for 120 dental and pharmacy sophomore students during the 2020 academic year. The method used was a Microsoft Teams synchronous online laboratory experience consisting of eight topics. Faculty lab facilitators created protocols, video scripts, online assignments, and instruction notes. Group lab instructors prepared and delivered the content for recording and led the student discussion. Data recording and live discussion were synchronized and executed. The response rates for the control (2019) and study (2020) groups were 36.89 and 60.83%, respectively. The control group reported higher satisfaction about general laboratory experience, compared to the online study group. The online group rated the laboratory online experience with equal satisfaction to that of an onsite lab experience. The onsite control group reported 55.26% satisfaction with the equipment instrument, while only 32.88% online group voiced their approval of this measure. It was understandable because the excitement in physiology work relies heavily on the experience of the work (P < 0.027). With the same difficulty index for both academic year examination papers, the nonsignificant difference in academic performance of the control and study groups (59.50 ± 13.50 and 62.40 ± 11.43, respectively) showed the effectiveness of our online synchronous physiology lab teaching. In conclusion, the online physiology learning experience was appreciated when a good design was achieved.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The COVID-19 pandemic has forced physiology educators to use online teaching. At the time of this work, there was no research investigating the effectiveness of online and face-to-face physiology lab teaching in undergraduate students. A synchronized online lab teaching of a virtual lab classroom on the Microsoft Teams platform was successfully implemented. Our data showed that online physiology lab teaching could make the students understand physiology concepts and have the same effectiveness as the onsite lab experience.
