Bridging the science-practice gaps in nature-based solutions: A riverfront planning in China.

ABSTRACT: Prominent gaps exist between science and practice in the field of nature-based solutions (NBS) worldwide, with relatively well formulated concepts but less clear application procedures. China urgently needs to address this gap because many so called NBS practices advance rapidly nowadays, including river landscapes. Advocating planning as a bridging procedure in China's top down governance system, this study introduces NBS planning for the Jialing River in Wusheng County to address three challenges: how to transform the riverfront planning from specialized to holistic, how to effectively communicate NBS in planning, and how to incorporate both scientific results and local wisdom into NBS decision-making. A planning scope was negotiated to incorporate holistic solutions. Five NBS paradigms were identified for better communication, and then spatially allocated with specific design guidelines and governance strategies. Our pilot study calls for reflection on the communication of NBS to the public, and alternative models of NBS implementations customized to different government regimes.

Project description:Since 2009, the International Conference on Family Planning (ICFP) has served as an opportunity for the global reproductive health community to share FP advances and practice lessons in the areas of research, programming, and advocacy. The key takeaways from all 15 tracks were grouped into six thematic areas: 1) Investing in family planning for a lifetime of returns. FP may yield different health and monetary benefits but continues to face a shortage of funding, although locally owned models provide alternative financing solutions. 2) Addressing inequities in family planning for adolescents, youth, and key populations. Marginalized populations and youth still face challenges in accessing FP. Youth-inclusive and user-centered programming show promise in addressing such challenges. 3) Reproductive justice: Abortion care, family planning, and women's wellbeing. Unsafe abortions tend to be more common among younger, poor, uneducated and rural women. Promising evidence show that providers may effectively shift from unsafe practices of dilation and curettage to safer manual vacuum aspiration or misoprostol. 4) Couple dynamics and family planning decision-making. Couples who share everyday life decision-making are more likely to use contraceptives; couple discordance on childbearing and fertility decisions directly influence women's decisions to covertly use FP. 5) Male involvement in FP programming. Male champions and advocates can successfully promote couple uptake of FP. Gender-transformative programming promotes gender equity and can directly impact behavior change. 6) Breakthroughs in novel contraceptives and systems improvement in family planning. User-centered contraceptive technologies and information systems present an opportunity to facilitate self-care and optimal supply chain management. ICFP 2018 highlighted research advances, implementation science wins, and critical knowledge gaps in global FP access and use. More research is needed to determine the scalability of novel technologies, more effective programming and service delivery models to ensure multisectoral knowledge translation and utilization by policymakers.

Project description:ObjectivesAccessibility is a critical factor in ensuring equitable public services. In urban older adult care systems, resource allocation and service disparities present unique challenges. The classical "5A" theory-availability, accessibility, affordability, adaptability, and acceptability-provides a robust framework for evaluating service delivery. However, its application in urban older adult care, especially in rapidly aging societies like China, remains limited. This study aims to develop and validate a framework to address affordability, resource allocation, and service mismatches in urban older adult care systems.MethodsA web-based cross-sectional study was performed in 2023. A multi-phase methodology was adopted to construct the framework, grounded in the "5A" theory. Indicators were refined through expert consultations using the Delphi method, involving 20 experts, while the entropy weight method ensured objective indicator weighting. The framework was empirically validated in Xi'an, China, using survey data collected from 438 older adult residents across urban strata. A fuzzy comprehensive evaluation (FCE) method was employed to assess accessibility and identify key service gaps.ResultsThis study constructs a comprehensive evaluation framework for basic older adult care services (BECS), structured around 5 primary dimensions, 14 sary indicators, and 37 tertiary indicators. Empirical validation in Xi'an further demonstrates the framework's scientific rigor and practical applicability. While the framework identifies strong spatial accessibility (3.8815), it also reveals critical gaps in affordability (3.1347) and psychological care (3.0862), confirming its effectiveness in diagnosing systemic disparities and guiding policy interventions.ConclusionThis study introduces a novel accessibility evaluation framework tailored for basic older adult care services, addressing critical gaps in affordability, psychological care, and service responsiveness. Empirical results validate the framework's practicality and its alignment with the real-world conditions of urban aging societies. Furthermore, an innovative "Matching-Realization-Satisfaction" improvement pathway is proposed, offering actionable strategies to enhance accessibility and optimize service delivery. This framework serves as a replicable model for advancing equitable older adult care in rapidly aging urban communities.
