Quantifying techno-economic indicators' impact on isolated renewable energy systems.

ABSTRACT: Addressing climate change with the rising global energy usage necessitates electricity sector decarbonization by rapidly moving toward flexible and efficient off-grid renewable energy systems (RESs). This paper analyzes the wind and solar micro-grids, with batteries and pumped hydro storage for a robust off-grid RES techno-economic operation, while considering diverse multi-objective optimization cases. This research has considered the RES variable operational losses in the developed methodology and relations between different indicators are evaluated, revealing a basic understanding between them. The results reveal that the reliability index is inversely related to the oversupply index, while directly related to the system self-sufficiency index. The cost of energy is more sensitive to technical indicators rather than the storage cost and so can be used as a primary monetary index. Energy and cost balance analysis showed that 16%-20% of the used energy was drained in RES operational losses, which were usually ignored in previous studies.

Project description:This study examines the siting scenarios for renewable energy installations (REI) in a mountainous region of Europe (Switzerland), incorporating the external costs of ecosystem services and, innovatively, social preferences. This approach challenges the prevalent techno-economic siting paradigm, which often overlooks these externalities. To minimize the external costs of the scenarios while maximizing energy yield, Marxan, an optimization software, was employed. The energy target for all scenarios is set at 25 TWh/a, stemming from the energy gap anticipated due to the phase-out of Swiss nuclear reactors by 2050. This target is met using renewable energy infrastructure such as wind, roof-mounted photovoltaic, and ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. By integrating social preferences into the optimization, this study showcases a promising implementation that transcends the software's intended applications. It complements techno-economic approaches and offers alternative decision-making avenues. The conventional "roof first" strategy proved ineffective in preventing extensive land use for the development of new renewable energy infrastructure. Strategies incorporating ground-mounted photovoltaic infrastructure were more spatially, ecologically, and socially efficient than those without. The strategy optimized for energy yield exhibited the highest spatial efficiency but incurred significant ecosystem service costs and, surprisingly, had low social costs. In contrast, the strategy prioritizing ecosystem services was the most efficient in terms of ecosystem service costs but had elevated social costs and was spatially less efficient than other strategies. The strategy optimized for social preferences incurred the lowest social costs and excelled in spatial efficiency and ecosystem service costs. Notably, this strategy employed a limited number of planning units linked to both high ecosystem service and social costs. The findings underscore that incorporating social preferences significantly enhances the evaluation of siting options. This inclusion allows for the social acceptance of investments to be factored into costs, facilitating more informed and inclusive decisions.

Project description:This study investigates the impact of renewable energy integration on energy efficiency within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from 2000 to 2022. Efficient renewable energy utilization is crucial for the CPEC's sustainable development. We employed multiple linear regression analysis on data from national energy statistics databases to examine the relationship between energy efficiency defined as the ratio of total renewable energy output to input in (TWh) and four renewable energy sources: hydropower, biofuel, solar PV, and geothermal. Our model controlled for potential confounding factors and met assumptions of linearity, multivariate normality, and absence of multicollinearity. Hydropower exhibited a highly significant negative correlation with energy efficiency (-0.632, p < 0.001), with a regression coefficient of -7.642 × 10⁻⁴ (p < 0.001). Similarly, biofuel showed a significant negative correlation (-0.222, p < 0.001) and a coefficient of -9.580 × 10⁻⁴ (p < 0.001). These findings suggest that increased production from these sources is associated with decreased energy efficiency, potentially due to transmission losses or inefficiencies in conversion technologies. In contrast, solar PV (-0.027, p = 0.638) and geothermal (-0.014, p = 0.806) showed no statistically significant relationship with energy efficiency, indicating that at their current scales of deployment, they do not significantly impact overall efficiency. A moderate negative correlation (r=-0.114, p = 0.047) was observed between solar PV and geothermal production, possibly reflecting resource allocation choices within the renewable energy portfolio. These results highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve the efficiency of hydropower and biofuel production and emphasize the potential for future contributions from solar PV and geothermal as their deployment and grid integration expands. The findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the complex interplay between renewable energy generation and overall energy efficiency within large-scale development projects.

Project description:The escalating challenges posed by fossil fuel reliance, climate change, and increasing energy expenses have underscored the critical importance of optimizing energy systems. This paper addresses the economic dispatch (ED) challenge, which directs the optimization of the output of generation units to satisfy electricity and heat requirements while reducing operational expenses. In contrast to conventional economic dispatch methods, this research incorporates renewable energy sources (RESs), energy storage systems (ESSs), and combined heat and power (CHP) systems. This integrated strategy facilitates the concurrent optimization of electrical and thermal generation, culminating in a more comprehensive and efficient solution. A sophisticated scheduling model for combined heat, power, and electrical energy dispatch (CHPEED) has been devised, minimizing generation expenses. The suggested model accounts for practical constraints inherent in real-world power systems, such as prohibited operating regions, while also addressing the intricate relationships between heat and power generation in CHP units. Also, the nature of wind energy, photovoltaic systems, and load requirements within the realm of stochastic dynamic ED are considered. The general algebraic modeling system (GAMS) was utilized to solve the optimization problem. The cost without RES or ESS is $250,954.80, indicating a high reliance on costly energy sources. Integrating RES reduces costs to $247,616.42, highlighting savings through decreased fossil fuel dependency. The combination of RES and ESS achieves the lowest cost of $245,933.24, showcasing improvements in efficiency and supply-demand management via optimized energy utilization. Hence, the findings demonstrate the model's effectiveness in addressing uncertainties associated with renewable generation, ensuring reliability in meeting energy demands and validating the possible capability to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of energy systems.
