Validation of the Brazilian Portuguese Version of the 24-Item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire.

Study design

Multicenter prospective study.

Objectives

To validate the Early-Onset Scoliosis 24 Questionnaire (EOSQ-24) questionnaire for the Brazilian Portuguese language, a widely used tool for assessing the impact of different treatments and interventions in EOS patients.

Methods

The EOSQ-24 questionnaire was cross-culturally adapted following guidelines already published. After language adjustments by a group of experts, the final version of the Brazilian Portuguese EOSQ-24 was applied to a group of 76 patients (35 male and 41 female). Internal consistency was evaluated using the Cronbach α coefficient and item-total correlations. Continuous variables were recorded as median values and interquartile ranges and categorical variables as percentages.

Results

In the study group, 76 patients were evaluated. The total EOSQ-24 Cronbach α coefficient was 0.883, indicating excellent reliability. The internal consistency of EOSQ-24 was assessed in 3 domains: patient quality of Life, parental burden, and satisfaction (Cronbach α: 0.816-0.934). The range across all subdomains was 0.473 to 0.934. Floor effects for the 24 items were between 1.3% and 43.4% and ceiling effects, between 3.9% and 42.1%.

Conclusions

The Brazilian Portuguese adaptation of the EOSQ-24 shows excellent reliability and can be a valid tool for psychometric assessment of children with EOS.

Project description:INTRODUCTION:Early Onset Scoliosis (EOS) is a complex pathology that covers a variety of etiologies, with onset before the age of 10 years. Surgical treatment of EOS should have the objectives of fulfilling maximum pulmonary function, spine length, with minimal hospitalizations, complications, and family burden. Radiographic parameters are an important standard in assessing treatment outcomes. However, the Early Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire-24 (EOSQ-24) was developed to measure the wider dimensions of outcomes involving the quality of life of patients and caregivers post-treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of culturally adapted Arabic version of the EOSQ-24. METHODS:Translation and cross-cultural adaptation, based on published guidelines, were performed on the original English EOSQ-24 by a committee. The Arabic version of EOSQ-24 was applied to the caregivers of all 58 EOS patients who were treated surgically after signing a consent form. Reliability was assessed using Cronbach's ? and item-total statistics for the whole questionnaire initially and for the each domain separately. Data quality was assessed by mean, median, percentage of missing data, ceiling and floor effects. Discriminative validity was examined using non parametric tests. RESULTS:The response for all items was excellent with only 1.7% (0-1) of responses missing. The floor effect ranged from 0% to 36.2% of patients and the ceiling effect ranged from 0 to 46.6%. Cronbach's ? test reliability was found excellent (0.919), as was the internal consistency of all domains, with Cronbach ? ranging from 0.903 to 0.918. Corrected item-total correlations were good for all domains (>0.3). Only one item (Question 21) showed low corrected item-total correlations (r = 0.222). However, Cronbach's ? did not increase significantly when this item was deleted (0.920). CONCLUSION:The first adapted Arabic version of EOSQ-24 is found to have good validity and reliability, and it can be used to assess children in Arab societies with EOS.

Project description:BackgroundThe Early-Onset Scoliosis Self-Report Questionnaire (EOSQ-SELF) is a novel self-report instrument to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of early onset scoliosis (EOS) patients, as a complementary HRQoL assessment tool for the proxy-repot 24-item Early-Onset Scoliosis Questionnaire (EOSQ-24). This study aimed to translate and adapt the EOSQ-SELF into a Chinese version and evaluate its reliability and validity in EOS patients.MethodsA cross-sectional study was performed from July 2022 to September 2022. Patients aged 8 to 18 years with EOS were recruited. Forwards-backwards translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the original EOSQ-SELF were performed. The Chinese EOSQ-SELF was administered and collected twice through social media, with a 2 weeks interval. Reliability was evaluated by using internal consistency, and test-retest reliability was assessed by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of data between the two time points. A Delphi survey in the expert committee was used to investigate the content validity. SRS-22r, PedsQL4.0, and EQ-5D-Y scales were used to assess the criterion-related validity. Nonparametric tests and multiple linear regression were performed to evaluate the discriminative ability.ResultsA total of 101 valid responses from EOS patients were received. The mean age was 12.08±2.19 years, and 53.47% were female. The mean Cobb angle was 60.56°±19.48°. Floor effects of 0.00% to 7.92% and ceiling effects of 0.00% to 52.48% were observed. Excellent internal consistency and test-retest reliability of the Chinese EOSQ-SELF was observed, with a Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.942, McDonald's ω coefficient of 0.940, and ICC of 0.930. All domains of the Chinese EOSQ-SELF were significantly correlated with SRS-22r (0.709 to 0.878), PedsQL4.0 (0.568 to 0.718), and EQ-5D-Y (-0.598 to -0.625), depicting excellent criterion-related validity. Discriminative ability was validated in aetiology (P<0.001), severity of spinal deformity (P<0.001), treatment status (P<0.001), and ambulatory ability (P<0.001).ConclusionsThe Chinese EOSQ-SELF is a reliable and valid tool for the assessment of self-report HRQoL in patients aged 8 to 18 years with EOS. It can be easily applied in clinical settings and for research purposes, as a complementary tool for the proxy-report EOSQ-24.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Despite the general agreement regarding the central role of the clinical learning environment in graduate medical education, its assessment remains challenging owing to the lack of available standardized measures. We report on the cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric assessment of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of Seelig's Resident Questionnaire. METHODS:The present study was performed in two steps. First, a cross-cultural translation and adaptation of the Resident Questionnaire was conducted through multiple translations, synthesis of versions, back-translation, content validation, and face validation. Subsequently, a sample of 288 (72%) resident physicians enrolled in 40 residency programs at a Brazilian university hospital completed the following measures: 1) the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the Resident Questionnaire (for factor analysis and to determine internal consistency, reliability, and validity); 2) three existing, validated psychometric measures (to determine convergent and divergent validity); and 3) a self-report questionnaire. RESULTS:Confirmatory factor analysis results provided support for the three-dimensional model of the Resident Questionnaire in use on a sample of Brazilian resident physicians, having been previously verified for use in American samples. All three factors (emotional distress, learning environment satisfaction, and workload satisfaction) verified in the confirmatory factor analysis showed good internal consistency (? > .80), reliability (Raykov's rho > .80), and correlations in the expected directions and magnitude with measures of depressive symptoms, duty hours, organizational conditions, and emotional exhaustion. CONCLUSIONS:This study is the first to adapt a measure of the clinical learning environment of residency programs into Brazilian Portuguese. Our findings suggest that the adapted version of the Resident Questionnaire is valid and reliable for assessing Brazilian residency programs. This free, easy-access, and fast-application instrument may be a useful standardized measure for research and educational purposes concerning the clinical learning environments of resident physicians.

Project description:Psychosocial risks are now widely recognised as one of the biggest challenges for occupational safety and health (OSH) and a major public health concern. The aim of this paper is to investigate the Portuguese long version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire II (COPSOQ II), in order to analyse the psychometric properties of the instrument and to validate it.The Portuguese COPSOQ II was issued to a total of 745 Portuguese employees from both private and public organisations across several economic sectors at a baseline and then 2 weeks later. Methodological quality appraisal was based on COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) recommendations. An analysis of the psychometric properties of the long version of COPSOQ II (internal consistency, intraclass correlation coefficient, floor and ceiling effects, response rate, missing values, mean and standard deviation, exploratory factor analysis) was performed to determine the validity and reliability of the instrument.The COPSOQ II had a response rate of 60.6% (test) and a follow-up response rate of 59.5% (retest). In general, a Cronbach's alpha of the COPSOQ scales (test and retest) was above the conventional threshold of 0.70. The test-retest reliability estimated by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed a higher reliability for most of the scales, above the conventional 0.7, except for eight scales. The proportion of the missing values was less than 1.3%, except for two scales. The average scores and standard deviations showed similar results to the original Danish study, except for eight scales. All of the scales had low floor and ceiling effects, with one exception. Overall, the exploratory factor analysis presented good results in 27 scales assuming a reflective measurement model. The hypothesized factor structure under a reflective model was not supported in 14 scales and for some but not all of these scales the explanation may be a formative measurement model.The Portuguese long version of COPSOQ II is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing psychosocial risks in the workplace. Although the results are good for most of the scales, there are those that should be evaluated in greater depth in future studies. This instrument may contribute to the promotion of a healthy working environment and workforce, providing clear benefits for companies and employees.

Project description:BackgroundHypersensitivity reactions to drugs are unpredictable and can be very complex and severe, even life threatening. Assess its impact on patient's health related quality of life (HRQoL) is crucial. The Drug Hypersensitivity Quality of Life Questionnaire (DrHy-Q) is the only validated disease-specific HRQoL questionnaire. We aimed to translate and cross-cultural validate the DrHy-Q to the Portuguese population. It was also our purpose to determine the impact of drug hypersensitivity on patients' HRQoL.MethodsThe translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the DrHy-Q to Portuguese was performed according to standards. Reliability of the DrHy-Q Portuguese version was assessed in terms of internal consistency and test-retest reliability. Structural validity, divergent validity (with a generic health related QoLQ-PGWBI) and discriminant validity were also evaluated. Forty patients accepted to participate in the validation phase. The Portuguese version of the DrHy-Q was applied to 260 consecutively adult patients, studied in our Department for suspected drug hypersensitivity.ResultsThe Portuguese DrHy-Q showed adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's ɑ = 0.938), good test-retest reliability [ICC = 0.713 (95% CI 0.488-0.850] and one-dimensional structure. No significant correlation was found between the DrHy-Q and the PGWBI total scores (r = - 0.010, p = 0.957). Two hundred of patients completed the study: 78.5% female; mean age = 44 ± 15 years. Mean DrHy-Q score was 36.8 ± 12.6. Two clinical factors significantly predict DrHy-Q total score: clinical manifestations and number of suspected drugs. Patients with anaphylaxis (β = 11.005; 95% CI 5.523; 16.487), urticaria/angioedema (β = 7.770; 95% CI 2.600; 12.940) and other manifestations (β = 7.948; 95% CI 1.933; 13.962) are more likely to have higher DrHy-Q total score than patients with maculopapular exanthema. Patients with ≥ 2 suspected drugs are also more likely to have worse QoL (β = 7.927; 95% CI 3.687; 12.166).ConclusionThe Portuguese version of DrHy-Q revealed adequate validity and reliability, indicating that it is appropriate to assess the impact of drug hypersensitivity on patients' HRQoL, providing data for a better comprehension and management of our patients. Moreover, our results highlight that the severity of the drug hypersensitivity reaction and the number of suspected drugs have impact on patient's DrHy-QoL.
