Project description:An original route for the intercalation of a 1,1'-diethyl-2,2'-cyanine iodide (PIC) cationic dye, through the use of anionic surfactants as vector/carrier phases, within Mg-Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) was investigated. From the data acquired from complementary techniques (X-ray diffraction, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies, thermogravimetry, and fluorimetry), it appears that both the intercalation and aggregation states of the cationic dye within the internal structure of LDH mainly depend on both the surfactant state (monomer form or spherical micelle) and its amount. The intercalation of PIC at a low molar ratio to the anionic surfactant leads to the formation of J-aggregates with singular fluorescence properties that mainly depend on the nature of the anionic surfactant used for the co-intercalation process. The results obtained in this study open new routes for the intercalation of cationic species, assisted by anionic surfactants, within LDHs.

Project description:Ag(I)-Ag(I) interactions in supramolecular structures have been achieved through the use of structural support from the ligand frames. In structures involving simple ligands like pyridine, strong ?-? interaction leads to spatial ordering of the individual [Ag(L)2]+ units. In such structures anions also play a crucial role in dictating the final arrangement of the [Ag(L)2]+ synthons. In order to determine whether the anions can solely dictate the arrangement of the [Ag(L)2]+ synthons in the supramolecular structure, four Ag(I) complexes of 4-pyridylcarbinol (PyOH), namely, [Ag(PyOH)2]X (X = NO3- (1), BF4- (2), CF3SO3- (3), and ClO4- (4)) have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Gradual transformation of the extended structures observed in 1-3 eventually merges into a unique linear alignment of the [Ag(PyOH)2]+ units in 4 along the c axis, a feature that results in strong argentophilic interactions. Complex 4 is sensitive to light and is inherently less stable than the other three analogues. The structural variations in this set of extended assemblies are solely dictated by the anions, since ?-? interaction between the substituted pyridine ligands is significantly diminished due to disposition of the -CH2OH substituent at the 4 position and H-bonding throughout the structure.

Project description:Biological processes rely on transient interactions that govern assembly of biomolecules into higher order, multi-component systems. A synthetic platform for the dynamic assembly of multicomponent complexes would provide novel entries to study and modulate the assembly of artificial systems into higher order topologies. Here, we establish a hybrid DNA origami-based approach as an assembly platform that enables dynamic templating of supramolecular architectures. It entails the site-selective recruitment of supramolecular polymers to the platform with preservation of the intrinsic dynamics and reversibility of the assembly process. The composition of the supramolecular assembly on the platform can be tuned dynamically, allowing for monomer rearrangement and inclusion of molecular cargo. This work should aid the study of supramolecular structures in their native environment in real-time and incites new strategies for controlled multicomponent self-assembly of synthetic building blocks.

Project description:Homo- and heterochiral aggregation during crystallization of organic molecules has significance both for fundamental questions related to the origin of life as well as for the separation of homochiral compounds from their racemates in industrial processes. Herein, we analyse these phenomena at the lowest level of hierarchy - that is the self-assembly of a racemic mixture of (R,R)- and (S,S)-PBI into 1D supramolecular polymers. By a combination of UV/vis and NMR spectroscopy as well as atomic force microscopy, we demonstrate that homochiral aggregation of the racemic mixture leads to the formation of two types of supramolecular conglomerates under kinetic control, while under thermodynamic control heterochiral aggregation is preferred, affording a racemic supramolecular polymer. FT-IR spectroscopy and quantum-chemical calculations reveal unique packing arrangements and hydrogen-bonding patterns within these supramolecular polymers. Time-, concentration- and temperature-dependent UV/vis experiments provide further insights into the kinetic and thermodynamic control of the conglomerate and racemic supramolecular polymer formation.

Project description:Designed porosity in coordination materials often relies on highly ordered crystalline networks, which provide stability upon solvent removal. However, the requirement for crystallinity often impedes control of higher degrees of morphological versatility, or materials processing. Herein, we describe a supramolecular approach to the synthesis of amorphous polymer materials with controlled microporosity. The strategy entails the use of robust metal-organic polyhedra (MOPs) as porous monomers in the supramolecular polymerization reaction. Detailed analysis of the reaction mechanism of the MOPs with imidazole-based linkers revealed the polymerization to consist of three separate stages: nucleation, elongation, and cross-linking. By controlling the self-assembly pathways, we successfully tuned the resulting macroscopic form of the polymers, from spherical colloidal particles to colloidal gels with hierarchical porosity. The resulting materials display distinct microporous properties arising from the internal cavity of the MOPs. This synthetic approach could lead to the fabrication of soft, flexible materials with permanent porosity.

Project description:Despite a growing understanding of factors that drive monomer self-assembly to form supramolecular polymers, the effects of aromaticity gain have been largely ignored. Herein, we document the aromaticity gain in two different self-assembly modes of squaramide-based bolaamphiphiles. Importantly, O → S substitution in squaramide synthons resulted in supramolecular polymers with increased fiber flexibility and lower degrees of polymerization. Computations and spectroscopic experiments suggest that the oxo- and thiosquaramide bolaamphiphiles self-assemble into "head-to-tail" versus "stacked" arrangements, respectively. Computed energetic and magnetic criteria of aromaticity reveal that both modes of self-assembly increase the aromatic character of the squaramide synthons, giving rise to stronger intermolecular interactions in the resultant supramolecular polymer structures. These examples suggest that both hydrogen-bonding and stacking interactions can result in increased aromaticity upon self-assembly, highlighting its relevance in monomer design.

Project description:The study of supramolecular polymers in the bulk, in diluted solution, and at the solid-liquid interface has recently become a major topic of interest, going from fundamental aspects to applications in materials science. However, examples of supramolecular polymers at the liquid-liquid interface are mostly unexplored. Here, we describe the supramolecular polymerization of triarylamine molecules and their light-triggered organization at a chloroform-water interface. The resulting interfacial nematic layer of these 1D supramolecular polymers is further used as a template for the precise alignment of spherical gold nanoparticles coming from the water phase. These hybrid thin films are spontaneously formed in a single process, without chemical prefunctionalization of the metallic nanoparticles, and their ordering is improved by centrifugation. The resulting polymer chains and strings of nanoparticles can be co-aligned with high anisotropy over very large distances. By using a combination of experimental and theoretical investigations, we decipher the full sequence of this oriented self-assembly process. In such a highly anisotropic configuration, electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals that the self-assembled nanoparticles behave as plasmonic waveguides.

Project description:A cationic derivative of pullulan was obtained by grafting reaction and used together with dextran sulfate to form polysaccharide-based nanohydrogel cross-linked via electrostatic interactions between polyions. Due to the polycation-polyanion interactions nanohydrogel particles were formed instantly and spontaneously in water. The nanoparticles were colloidally stable and their size and surface charge could be controlled by the polycation/polyanion ratio. The morphology of the obtained particles was visualized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The resulting structures were spherical, with hydrodynamic diameters in the range of 100-150 nm. The binding constant (Ka) of a model drug, piroxicam, to the cationic pullulan (C-PUL) was determined by spectrophotometric measurements. The value of Ka was calculated according to the Benesi-Hildebrand equation to be (3.6 ± 0.2) × 103 M-1. After binding to cationic pullulan, piroxicam was effectively entrapped inside the nanohydrogel particles and released in a controlled way. The obtained system was efficiently taken up by cells and was shown to be biocompatible.

Project description:Herein, novel hyperbranched polyamidoamine guanidinium salts (GS-h-PAMAM) and two cationic acrylamide copolymers P(AM-DAC-ABSM) and P(AM-DAC-AMTU) were successfully prepared. Then, self-assembly supramolecular systems were synthesized by directly mixing GS-h-PAMAM with copolymers in aqueous solution, and the mechanism of the self-assembly process was speculated. FT-IR, NMR, and SEM were used for structural confirmation. Furthermore, the excellent solution properties revealed that the supramolecular systems had potential application in clay hydration inhibitors. More importantly, utilizing functionalized hyperbranched polyamidoamine in the synthesis self-assembly supramolecular systems was an effective strategy for expanding their application fields and developing new functional materials, providing a powerful reference for the next study.

Project description:We describe the functional capability of a cross-linked hydrogel composed of sulfated glycosaminoglycans and a cationic cellulose by conducting trials on experimental animal models using intra-articular implants to treat an articular disease called osteoarthritis. Forty-eight mature New Zealand white rabbits were divided into three experimental groups: A, B, and C. Group A and B underwent unilateral anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLT) of the right knee. Subsequently, both knees of group A were treated with the injectable formulation under study. Meanwhile, group B was treated with sterile PBS (placebo). The animals of group C were surgically operated in both knees: Commercial hyaluronic acid (HA) was implanted in the left knee, and the formulation under study was implanted in the right knee. After implantation, all specimens underwent several evaluations at 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. At 6 months, no significant differences were detected between the right and left knees of the different groups. However, significant differences were observed between both knees at 12 months in group C, with less cartilage damage in the right knees implanted with our hydrogel. Therefore, in vivo studies have demonstrated hydrogel safety, superior permanence, and less cartilage damage for long-term follow up 12 months after implantation for the formulation under study compared with commercial HA.
