Ethoxylated Butoxyethanol-BADGE Adducts-New Potential Migrants from Epoxy Resin Can Coating Material.

ABSTRACT: The acetonitrile extracts of can-coating materials have been analyzed by using high-pressure liquid chromatography/electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (HPLC/ESI-MS). On the basis of detected ions [M + H]+, [M + NH4]+, [M + Na]+ and product ions, the ethoxylated butoxyethanol-bisphenol A diglycidyl ether adducts were identified in two of the analyzed extracts. Although the oxyethylene unit-containing compounds are widely used for the production of different kinds of materials, the ethoxylated species have not been earlier detected in epoxy resin can-coatings.

Preparation and Characterization of New Geopolymer-Epoxy Resin Hybrid Mortars.

Project description:The preparation and characterization of metakaolin-based geopolymer mortars containing an organic epoxy resin are presented here for the first time. The specimens have been prepared by means of an innovative in situ co-reticulation process, in mild conditions, of commercial epoxy based organic resins and geopolymeric slurry. In this way, geopolymer based hybrid mortars characterized by a different content of normalized sand (up to 66% in weight) and by a homogeneous dispersion of the organic resin have been obtained. Once hardened, these new materials show improved compressive strength and toughness in respect to both the neat geopolymer and the hybrid pastes since the organic polymer provides a more cohesive microstructure, with a reduced amount of microcracks. The microstructural characterization allows to point out the presence of an Interfacial Transition Zone similar to that observed in cement based mortars and concretes. A correlation between microstructural features and mechanical properties has been studied too.

Performance Research of Natural Mica Modified with Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for an Epoxy Resin Anti-Corrosion Coating.

Project description:A new composite material made from mica and a metal-organic framework (MOF) has been developed to improve the anticorrosive capabilities of epoxy resin coatings. The layered mica was loaded with denser and more uniform UIO-66 nanoparticles after modifying the composite with polyethyleneimine (PEI). The composites were used as fillers to prepare epoxy coatings that exhibited long-lasting active (labyrinth effect produced by mica) and passive (pH-sensitive release of corrosion inhibitors) corrosion protection. Settling experiments showed that polyethyleneimine improved the composites' compatibility in epoxy resin. After being immersed in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 60 days, the adhesion of PMC-UIO@MBT/EP increases to 9.01 MPa, while the water absorption rate only reaches 2.57%. It indicates that the coating has good barrier properties and stability. After being soaked in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution for 60 days at pH = 7, PMC-UIO@MBT/EP exhibits high low-frequency impedance (8.30 × 108 Ω), as demonstrated by the electronic impedance spectrum (EIS). In addition, the coating also exhibited the highest low-frequency impedance after 30 days in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution at pH = 11.

Properties and Corrosion Resistance Mechanism of a Self-Healing Propane-1,2,3-Triol-Loaded Polysulfone Microcapsule Coating Loaded with Epoxy Resin.

Project description:Propane-1,2,3-triol-loaded polysulfone (PSF) microcapsules were prepared by the solvent evaporation method. The particle size of the microcapsules is about 140 μm. The shell wall thickness is about 17 μm approximately. The microcapsules have high thermal stability and antiwear performance. The self-healing coating was prepared by adding the prepared capsule into the epoxy resin coating. After electrochemical and corrosion immersion experiments, the resistance modulus of the coating added to the microcapsules was higher than the others in a 3.5 wt % NaCl corrosion solution, and it had the lowest corrosion current density, so the self-healing microcapsule coatings showed excellent healing ability and corrosion inhibition function for microcracks. This was attributed to the formation of a hydrophobic film after propane-1,2,3-triol was released from the damaged microcapsules.

Eco-Friendly Epoxy-Terminated Polyurethane-Modified Epoxy Resin with Efficient Enhancement in Toughness.

Project description:Polyurethane is widely used to toughen epoxy resins due to its excellent comprehensive properties and compatibility. However, some demerits of polyurethanes limit their applications, such as the harsh storage condition of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane (ITPU), the limited amount of ITPU in epoxy resin, and using solvents during the preparation of polyurethane-modified epoxy resins. To address these issues, in this study, we reported a facile and green approach for preparing epoxy-terminated polyurethane (EPU)-modified epoxy resins with different EPU contents. It was found that the toughness of the epoxy resin was significantly improved after the addition of EPU. When the EPU content was 30 wt%, the elongation at break and toughness were improved by 358.36% and 73.56%, respectively. In comparison, the toughening effect of EPU outperformed that of ITPU. Moreover, the high content of EPU did not significantly decrease the glass transition temperature and had little effect on the thermal stability of the epoxy resin.

Biocompatible Carbon-Based Coating as Potential Endovascular Material for Stent Surface.

Project description:Stainless steel 316L is a material commonly used in cardiovascular medicine. Despite the various methods applied in stent production, the rates of in-stent restenosis and thrombosis remain high. In this study graphene was used to coat the surface of 316L substrate for enhanced bio- and hemocompatibility of the substrate. The presence of graphene layers applied to the substrate was investigated using cutting-edge imaging technology: energy-filtered low-voltage FE-SEM approach, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The potential of G-316L surface to influence endothelial cells phenotype and endothelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EndoMT) has been determined. Our results show that the bio- and hemocompatible properties of graphene coatings along with known radial force of 316L make G-316L a promising candidate for intracoronary implants.

Multitasking Performance of Fe3O4/BaTiO3/Epoxy Resin Hybrid Nanocomposites.

Project description:In this study, hybrid nanocomposites consisting of Fe3O4/BaTiO3/epoxy resin were prepared with varying amounts of filer content. Structural and morphological characterization, conducted via X-Ray Diffraction patterns and Scanning Electron Microscopy images, revealed the successful fabrication of composites and fine dispersion of inclusions. Thermomechanical properties are studied via Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Thermogravimetric Analysis, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis and static mechanical tests. Hybrid composites exhibit enhanced thermal stability and improved mechanical response. Indicatively, Young's modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness increase from 1.26 GPa, 22.25 MPa, and 3.03 kJ/m3 for the neat epoxy to 1.39 GPa, 45.73 MPa, and 41.08 kJ/m3 for the composites with 20 or 15 parts per hundred resin per mass (phr) of Fe3O4, respectively. Electrical behavior is investigated via Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy and ac conductivity measurements. The real part of dielectric permittivity reaches the value of 11.11 at 30 °C for the composite with 40 phr of Fe3O4. The ability to store and retrieve electric energy on the nanocomposites is examined with the following parameters: the filler content and the applied voltage under dc conditions. Retrieved energy reaches 79.23% of the stored one, for the system with 15 phr of Fe3O4. Magnetic response is studied via a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer. Magnetic saturation, for the system with the highest magnetic filler content, obtains the value of 25.38 Am2/kg, while pure magnetic powder attains the value of 86.75 Am2/kg. Finally, the multifunctional performance of the nanocomposites is assessed regarding all the exerted stimuli and the optimum behavior is discussed.

Self-Extinguishing Resin Transfer Molding Composites Using Non-Fire-Retardant Epoxy Resin.

Project description:Introducing fire-retardant additives or building blocks into resins is a widely adopted method used for improving the fire retardancy of epoxy composites. However, the increase in viscosity and the presence of insoluble additives accompanied by resin modification remain challenges for resin transfer molding (RTM) processing. We developed a robust approach for fabricating self-extinguishing RTM composites using unmodified and flammable resins. To avoid the effects on resin fluidity and processing, we loaded the flame retardant into tackifiers instead of resins. We found that the halogen-free flame retardant, a microencapsulated red phosphorus (MRP) additive, was enriched on fabric surfaces, which endowed the composites with excellent fire retardancy. The composites showed a 79.2% increase in the limiting oxygen index, a 29.2% reduction in heat release during combustion, and could self-extinguish within two seconds after ignition. Almost no effect on the mechanical properties was observed. This approach is simple, inexpensive, and basically applicable to all resins for fabricating RTM composites. This approach adapts insoluble flame retardants to RTM processing. We envision that this approach could be extended to load other functions (radar absorbing, conductivity, etc.) into RTM composites, broadening the application of RTM processing in the field of advanced functional materials.

New Autonomous Water-Enabled Self-Healing Coating Material with Antibacterial-Agent-Releasing Properties.

Project description:A new autonomous water-enabled self-healing coating with antibacterial-agent-releasing capability was developed for the first time by precipitating an aqueous solution of hydrogen-bonded tannic acid (TA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) (TA: 5 mg/mL; PEG: 5 mg/mL with MW = 100 kDa) to form a smooth, uniform coating layer with an average roughness of 0.688 nm and thickness of 22.3 μm on a polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) substrate after 10 min of incubation. Our method is cost- and time-efficient, as the hydrophilic coating (water contact angle = 65.1°) forms rapidly, binding strongly to the PMMA substrate (adhesive energy = 83 mJ/m2), without the need for pretreatment or surface modification, and is capable of rapid self-repair (approximately 5 min) through hydrogen bonding in aqueous media. Furthermore, adding 0.5 mg/mL of chlorhexidine acetate (CHX), a commonly used antibacterial agent in dentistry, into the TA-PEG emulsion allowed the release of 2.89 μg/mL of the drug from the coating layer, which is promising for actively inhibiting the vitality and growth of bacteria around PMMA dental restorations. The use of CHX-loaded TA-PEG hydrogen-bonded complexes is highly favorable for the fabrication of an autonomous self-healing biocoating with active antibacterial-agent-releasing capability, which can be applied not only in dentistry but also in other medical fields.

Epoxy Resin Composite Based on Functional Hybrid Fillers.

Project description:A study was carried out involving the filling of epoxy resin (EP) with bentonites and silica modified with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS). The method of homogenization and the type of filler affect the functional and canceling properties of the composites was determined. The filler content ranged from 1.5% to 4.5% by mass. The basic mechanical properties of the hybrid composites were found to improve, and, in particular, there was an increase in tensile strength by 44%, and in Charpy impact strength by 93%. The developed hybrid composites had characteristics typical of polymer nanocomposites modified by clays, with a fine plate morphology of brittle fractures observed by SEM, absence of a plate separation peak in Wide Angles X-ray Scattering (WAXS) curves, and an exfoliated structure observed by TEM.

Tetrafunctional Epoxy Resin-Based Buoyancy Materials: Curing Kinetics and Properties.

Project description:In order to synthesize a new kind of buoyancy material with high-strength, low-density and low-water-absorption and to study the curing reaction of tetraglycidylamine epoxy resin with an aromatic amine curing agent, the non-isothermal differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) method is used to calculate the curing kinetics parameters of N,N,N',N'-tetraepoxypropyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane epoxy resin (AG-80) and the m-xylylenediamine (m-XDA) curing process. Further, buoyancy materials with different volume fractions of hollow glass microsphere (HGM) compounded with a AG-80 epoxy resin matrix were prepared and characterized. The curing kinetics calculation results show that, for the curing reaction of the AG-80/m-XDA system, the apparent activation energy increases with the conversion rates increasing and the reaction model is the Jander equation (three-dimensional diffusion, 3D, n = 1/2). The experimental results show that the density, compressive strength, saturated water absorption and water absorption rate of the composite with 55 v % HGM are 0.668 g·cm-3, 107.07 MPa, 0.17% and 0.025 h-1/2, respectively. This kind of composite can probably be used as a deep-sea buoyancy material.
