A Supramolecular Photosensitizer System Based on Nano-Cu/ZIF-8 Capped with Water-Soluble Pillar[6]arene and Methylene Blue Host-Guest Complexations.

ABSTRACT: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) as a safe, non-invasive modality for cancer therapy, in which the low oxygen and high glutathione in the tumor microenvironment reduces therapeutic efficiency. In order to overcome these problems, we prepared a supramolecular photosensitive system of O2-Cu/ZIF-8@ZIF-8@WP6-MB (OCZWM), which was loaded with oxygen to increase the oxygen concentration in the tumor microenvironment, and the Cu2+ in the system reacted with glutathione (GSH) to reduce the GSH concentration to generate Cu+. It is worth noting that the generated Cu+ can produce the Fenton reaction, thus realizing the combination therapy of PDT and chemodynamic therapy (CDT) to achieve the purpose of significantly improving the anti-cancer efficiency.

Styrene Purification by Guest-Induced Restructuring of Pillar[6]arene.

Project description:The separation of styrene (St) and ethylbenzene (EB) mixtures is important in the chemical industry. Here, we explore the St and EB adsorption selectivity of two pillar-shaped macrocyclic pillar[n]arenes (EtP5 and EtP6; n = 5 and 6). Both crystalline and amorphous EtP6 can capture St from a St-EB mixture with remarkably high selectivity. We show that EtP6 can be used to separate St from a 50:50 v/v St:EB mixture, yielding in a single adsorption cycle St with a purity of >99%. Single-crystal structures, powder X-ray diffraction patterns, and molecular simulations all suggest that this selectivity is due to a guest-induced structural change in EtP6 rather than a simple cavity/pore size effect. This restructuring means that the material "self-heals" upon each recrystallization, and St separation can be carried out over multiple cycles with no loss of performance.

Graphdiyne bearing pillar[5]arene-reduced Au nanoparticles for enhanced catalytic performance towards the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue.

Project description:Graphdiyne (GD), a novel two dimensional (2D) carbon material, has earned a lot of attention in recent years. Constructing a novel hybrid nanomaterial based on GD, macrocyclic host and Au nanoparticles is an effective strategy for heterogeneous catalysis applications. While tremendous advancements in the preparation of two dimensional (2D) materials anchoring Au nanoparticles have been made, it is an urgent requirement to explore a green, efficient and facile approach for obtaining small-sized Au nanoparticles. The use of the 2D material graphdiyne (GD) presents more-promising candidates for constructing excellent sites for loading metal nanoparticles. In this study, a novel 2D heterogeneous hybrid nanomaterial (P5A-Au-GD) based on GD and pillar[5]arene (P5A)-reduced Au nanoparticles (P5A-Au) was successfully prepared. In this strategy, the P5A can reduce HAuCl4 with the aid of NaOH in the dispersion of GD. Accordingly, the generated P5A-Au can immediately interact with GD to form the P5A-Au-GD hybrid nanomaterial without any harsh reduced materials or other energies. The Au nanoparticles with average diameter of 2-3 nm are homogeneously dispersed on the surface of GD. The heterogeneous 2D catalyst of P5A-Au-GD shows high catalytic performances in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol and methylene blue by comparing commercial Pd/C catalyst. Meanwhile, the unique 2D heterogeneous hybrid material P5A-Au-GD exhibits durable recyclability and stability during the catalytic reaction. Considering the outstanding merits of the heterogeneous 2D catalyst of P5A-Au-GD as well as the simple and green preparation, this study might not only present enormous opportunities for the stabilized, high-performance and sustainable catalysts but also be applied in other frontier studies of sustainable functionalized nanocomposites and advanced materials.

Supramolecular Hybrid Material Constructed from Graphene Oxide and Pillar[6]arene-Based Host-Guest Complex as a Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Signals Nanoamplifier.

Project description:Photoacoustic imaging combines the merits of ultrasound imaging and optical imaging that allows a fascinating imaging paradigm with deeper tissue penetration than optical imaging and higher spatial resolution than ultrasound imaging. Herein, we develop a supramolecular hybrid material composed of graphene oxide (GO) and a pillar[6]arene-based host-guest complex (CP6⊃PyN), which can be used as a ultrasound (US) and photoacoustic (PA) signal nanoamplifier. Triggered by the near-infrared (NIR) light mediated photothermal effect, CO2 nanobubbles are generated on the surface of GO@CP6⊃PyN due to the decomposition of bicarbonate counterions, thus strongly amplifying its US and PA performances. Our study, for the first time, demonstrates enhanced US and PA activity in supramolecular hybrid material on the basis of host-guest chemistry as a photoacoustic nanoplatform.

pH-Responsive Host⁻Guest Complexation in Pillar[6]arene-Containing Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films.

Project description:A water-soluble, anionic pillar[6]arene derivative (WP6) is applied as monomeric building block for the layer-by-layer self-assembly of thin polyelectrolyte multilayer films, and its pH-dependent host⁻guest properties are employed for the reversible binding and release of a methylviologen guest molecule. The alternating assembly of anionic WP6 and cationic diazo resin (DAR) is monitored in-situ by a dissipative quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D). In solution, the formation of a stoichiometric inclusion complex of WP6 and cationic methylviologen (MV) as guest molecule is investigated by isothermal titration calorimetry and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively, and attributed to electrostatic interactions as primary driving force of the host⁻guest complexation. Exposure of WP6-containing multilayers to MV solution reveals a significant decrease of the resonance frequency, confirming MV binding. Subsequent release is achieved by pH lowering, decreasing the host⁻guest interactions. The dissociation of the host⁻guest complex, release of the guest from the film, as well as full reversibility of the binding event are identified by QCM-D. In addition, UV-vis data quantify the surface coverage of the guest molecule in the film after loading and release, respectively. These findings establish the pH-responsiveness of WP6 as a novel external stimulus for the reversible guest molecule recognition in thin films.

Stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks gated by pillar[5]arene supramolecular switches.

Project description:Spurred on by recent advances in materials chemistry and drug delivery, a new stimuli-responsive theranostic hybrid platform, based on mechanized monodisperse nano metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) gated by carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP5) switches with bio-friendly pH-triggered cargo release capabilities, has been constructed for the first time. This nanoscale smart cargo delivery system showed pH- and/or competitive binding agent-triggered controlled cargo release with negligible premature release, large pore sizes for drug encapsulation, low cytotoxicity, good biodegradability and biocompatibility, and potential application in cell imaging, which offers a new tool in targeted drug delivery and the controlled release of therapeutic agents.

Nano-Theranostics Constructed from Terpyridine-Modified Pillar [5]arene-Based Supramolecular Amphiphile and Its Application in Both Cell Imaging and Cancer Therapy.

Project description:Theranostics play an important role in cancer treatment due to its realized real-time tracking of therapeutic efficacy in situ. In this work, we have designed and synthesized a terpyridine-modified pillar [5]arenes (TP5). By the coordination of terpyridine and Zn2+, the complex TP5/Zn was obtained. Then, supramolecular amphiphile can be constructed by using host-guest complexation between a polyethylene glycol contained guest (PM) and TP5/Zn. Combining the fluorescence properties from the terpyridine group and the amphiphilicity from the system, the obtained TP5/Zn/PM can further be self-assembled into fluorescent particles with diameters of about 150 nm in water. The obtained particles can effectively load anti-cancer drugs and realize living cell imaging and a precise release of the drugs.

Size Switchable Supramolecular Nanoparticle Based on Azobenzene Derivative within Anionic Pillar[5]arene.

Project description:A photo/thermal-switchable supramolecular nanoparticles assembly has been constructed based on an inclusion complex between anionic pillar[5]arene 2C-WP5A and azobenzene derivative Azo-py-OMe (G). The novel anionic pillar[5]arene-based host-guest inclusion complexation was investigated by the 1H NMR titration, 2D ROESY and isothermal titration microcalorimetry (ITC) showing high association constant (Ka) of (2.60 ± 0.06) × 104 M-1 with 1:1 binding stoichiometry. Furthermore, the supramolecular nanoparticles assembly can be conveniently obtained from G and a small amount of 2C-WP5A in aqueous solution, which was so-called "host induced aggregating (HIA)". The size and morphology of the supramolecular nanoparticles assembly were characterized by TEM and DLS. As a result of the photo/thermal-isomerization of G included in the cavity of 2C-WP5A, the size of these nanoparticles could reversibly change from ~800 nm to ~250 nm, which could switch the solution of this assembly from turbid to clear.

Supramolecular exfoliation of layer silicate clay by novel cationic pillar[5]arene intercalants.

Project description:Clays are multi-layered inorganic materials that can be used to prepare nanocomposite fillers. Because the multi-layered structure is thermodynamically stable, it is difficult to change a multi-layered material into single layers to improve its dispersity. Previously, clays were modified with dodecylammonium cations to promote complexation with nylon 6, nylon 66, polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, and polycaprolactone to increase the mechanical strength (and/or thermal stability) of the composite material; however, complete exfoliation could not be achieved in these composites. In this study, pillar[5]arenes are synthesized and functionalized with ten cationic substituents as novel intercalants for modifying bentonite clay, which is a multi-layered metal-cation-containing silicate. The pillar[5]arenes exfoliate the clay by forming polyrotaxanes with poly(ethylene glycol) through host-guest interactions.

Concentration-dependent supramolecular self-assembly of A1/A2-asymmetric-difunctionalized pillar[5]arene.

Project description:A series of A1/A2-bromoalkoxy-and-hydroxy-difunctionalized pillar[5]arenes were synthesized by the removal of the pillar[5]arene-bearing benzyl group using catalytic hydrogenation. The difunctionalized pillar[5]arene bearing 8-bromooctoxy and benzyloxy substituents at the A1/A2 positions formed pseudo[1]rotaxane at low concentration and double-threaded supramolecular dimer at high concentration. The supramolecular self-assembly behavior has been probed with multiple methods including varying (variable) concentration 1H NMR spectroscopy, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and single-crystal X-ray analysis.
