Photodegradation of Biohazardous Dye Brilliant Blue R Using Organometallic Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized through a Green Chemistry Method.

Project description:Nowadays, nanostructures having tremendous chemical and physical properties are gaining attention in the biomedical industry. However, when they are prepared through classical methods (physical and chemical), they are often non-biocompatible and toxic. Considering the mentioned factors, in this research, organometallic silver nanostructures (OMAgNs) have been prepared by the green chemistry method using the acetone, methanol, and methanol-hexane-based extracts of the medicinally important plant Cichorium intybus. Secondary metabolites from C. intybus can be used as an alternative to synthetic reagents at an industrial scale to manufacture biosafe and economical nanostructures with enhanced physicochemical parameters. Prepared nanostructures were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA, UV, and zeta potential measurement. SEM analysis revealed different shapes of OMAgNs, prepared with various extracts. XRD analysis showed the crystallinity of the nanostructures. FTIR spectroscopy helped to identify groups of compounds present in the extracts and used for the OMAgNs synthesis. Out of the three tested OMAgNs, those prepared with methanol extract were selected due to the highest obtained yield and stability (highest negative zeta potential) and were tested as a cost-efficient and active agent to photodegrade organic pollutant, Brilliant Blue R, using energy from sunlight. A decrease in UV-VIS absorbance confirmed the rapid degradation of the dye.

Microwave-Assisted Catalytic Degradation of Brilliant Green by Spinel Zinc Ferrite Sheets.

Project description:Microwave (MW)-assisted catalytic degradation, being an emerging technique, can potentially fill in the technological gap which promises on-demand, prompt, and efficient catalysis, and therefore, suitable MW catalysts are curiously being hunted. Candidature of spinel zinc ferrite (SZFO) atomic sheets as a MW catalyst has thoroughly been investigated in this article. Analytical techniques prove SZFO atomic sheets to be highly crystalline, thermally stable, good dielectric, and superparamagnetic, which render it a potentially strong MW catalyst. Brilliant green (BG) has been demonstrated to be chemisorbed on the SZFO atomic sheets, which upon MW irradiation gets mineralized within 5 min, and the overall efficiency has been observed to be >99%. Total organic carbon removal of ∼80% has been obtained. Ionic chromatography proves the formation of SO4 2- and NO3 - anions which increase with MW exposure time. Liquid chromatography mass spectroscopy studies have established intermediate formations during catalysis. SZFO, established as a uniquely suited and highly efficient MW catalyst for BG, is expected to broaden the horizons of MW-assisted catalytic degradation and lead it toward its broader applications.

Adsorption of Brilliant Green Dye onto a Mercerized Biosorbent: Kinetic, Thermodynamic, and Molecular Docking Studies.

Project description:This study reports the valorization of pistachio shell agricultural waste, aiming to develop an eco-friendly and cost-effective biosorbent for cationic brilliant green (BG) dye adsorption from aqueous media. Pistachio shells were mercerized in an alkaline environment, resulting in the treated adsorbent (PSNaOH). The morphological and structural features of the adsorbent were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and polarized light microscopy. The pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetic model best described the adsorption kinetics of the BG cationic dye onto PSNaOH biosorbents. In turn, the equilibrium data were best fitted to the Sips isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity decreased with temperature (from 52.42 mg/g at 300 K to 46.42 mg/g at 330 K). The isotherm parameters indicated improved affinity between the biosorbent surface and BG molecules at lower temperatures (300 K). The thermodynamic parameters estimated on the basis of the two approaches indicated a spontaneous (ΔG < 0) and exothermic (ΔH < 0) adsorption process. The design of experiments (DoE) and the response surface methodology (RSM) were employed to establish optimal conditions (sorbent dose (SD) = 4.0 g/L and initial concentration (C0) = 10.1 mg/L), yielding removal efficiency of 98.78%. Molecular docking simulations were performed to disclose the intermolecular interactions between the BG dye and lignocellulose-based adsorbent.

Experimental data of CaTiO3 photocatalyst for degradation of organic pollutants (Brilliant green dye) - Green synthesis, characterization and kinetic study.

Project description:The data presented here focuses on the physicochemical characterization of perovskite CaTiO3 nanoparticles (orthorhombic) as photocatalyts and the kinetic study of their photodegradation performance toward organic pollutant, i.e. brilliant green (BG) which is azo derivatives dye. The CaTiO3 nanoparticles was synthesized using chicken eggshell-derived CaCO3 and anatase TiO2 with molar ratio of (1:1), (1:3), (2:5), and (2:7). The physical and microstructural properties of CaTiO3 were characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and UV/vis spectrometer. The effect of initial dye concentration, catalyst composition, and catalyst dosage on the adsorption mechanism of dye on CaTiO3 was investigated in jacketed photoreactor under UV irradiation. The analysis reveals that BG molecules are efficiently chemisorbed, as indicated by pseudo first order kinetic, and degraded within 120 min. Considering the low-cost preparation process and high photocatalytic performance, the resultant CaTiO3 can further be used as an efficient photocatalyst for organic pollutant removal from aqueous and industrial wastewater.

Removal of Brilliant Green Dye from Water Using Ficus benghalensis Tree Leaves as an Efficient Biosorbent.

Project description:The presence of dyes in water stream is a major environmental problem that affects aquatic and human life negatively. Therefore, it is essential to remove dye from wastewater before its discharge into the water bodies. In this study, Banyan (Ficus benghalensis, F. benghalensis) tree leaves, a low-cost biosorbent, were used to remove brilliant green (BG), a cationic dye, from an aqueous solution. Batch model experiments were carried out by varying operational parameters, such as initial concentration of dye solution, contact time, adsorbent dose, and pH of the solution, to obtain optimum conditions for removing BG dye. Under optimum conditions, maximum percent removal of 97.3% and adsorption capacity (Qe) value of 19.5 mg/g were achieved (at pH 8, adsorbent dose 0.05 g, dye concentration 50 ppm, and 60 min contact time). The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were applied to the experimental data. The linear fit value, R2 of Freundlich adsorption isotherm, was 0.93, indicating its best fit to our experimental data. A kinetic study was also carried out by implementing the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The adsorption of BG on the selected biosorbent follows pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.99), indicating that transfer of internal and external mass co-occurs. This study surfaces the excellent adsorption capacity of Banyan tree leaves to remove cationic BG dye from aqueous solutions, including tap water, river water, and filtered river water. Therefore, the selected biosorbent is a cost-effective and easily accessible approach for removing toxic dyes from industrial effluents and wastewater.

Self-sensitized photodegradation and adsorption of aqueous malachite green dye using one-dimensional titanium oxide nanofilaments.

Project description:Truly one-dimensional titanium oxide nanofilaments with a lepidocrocite structure (1DLs) were explored in the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of aqueous malachite green (MG), a toxic polluting dye. Decolorization is monitored by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and mineralization is confirmed by total organic carbon analysis. The 1DL/MG flocs are characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. 1DLs, a colloidal nanomaterial, exhibit flocculating behavior while demonstrating high affinity for MG, with a maximum uptake of >680 mg/g rapidly via ion exchange. Additionally, 1DLs decolorize MG under visible light only, unlike most available titania products, via a self-sensitization effect. MG is decolorized by 1DLs by >70% in 30 min under 1 sun exposure of visible light. Counterintuitively, dye adsorption increases as the normalized concentration by mass of 1DL decreases. Demonstrating high adsorption capacity and dye mineralization supports the use of 1DLs in water treatment and self-sensitization for photoelectrochemical devices, like solar cells.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Single and Binary Mixture of Brilliant Green and Rhodamine B Dyes by Zinc Sulfide Quantum Dots.

Project description:We present the preparation of octadecylamine-capped ZnS quantum dots from bis(morpholinyldithiocarbamato)Zn(II) complex. The complex was thermolyzed at 130 °C in octadecylamine at different times, to study the effect of reaction time on the morphological and photocatalytic properties of the ZnS quantum dots. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed a hexagonal wurtzite crystalline phase of ZnS, while HRTEM images showed particle sizes of about 1-3 nm, and energy band gaps of 3.68 eV (ZnS-1), 3.87 eV (ZnS-2), and 4.16 eV (ZnS-3) were obtained from the Tauc plot for the ZnS nanoparticles. The as-prepared ZnS were used as photocatalysts for the degradation of brilliant green, rhodamine B, and binary dye consisting of a mixture of brilliant green-rhodamine B. The highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 94% was obtained from ZnS-3 with low photoluminescence intensity. The effect of catalytic dosage and pH of the dyes solution on the photocatalytic process shows that pH 8 is optimal for the degradation of brilliant green, while pH 6.5 is the best for photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B. The degradation of the binary dyes followed the same trends. The effect of catalytic dosage shows that 1 mg mL-1 of the ZnS nano-photocatalyst is the optimum dosage for the degradation of organic dyes. Reusability studies show that the ZnS quantum dots can be reused five times without a significant reduction in degradation efficiency.

Development and Characterization of a Molecularly Imprinted Polymer for the Selective Removal of Brilliant Green Textile Dye from River and Textile Industry Effluents.

Project description:In this paper, we present an alternative technique for the removal of Brilliant Green dye (BG) in aqueous solutions based on the application of molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) as a selective adsorbent for BG. The MIP was prepared by bulk radical polymerization using BG as the template; methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, selected via computer simulations; ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker; and 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionitrile) (AIBN) as the radical initiator. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses of the MIP and non-molecularly imprinted polymer (NIP)-used as the control material-showed that the two polymers exhibited similar morphology in terms of shape and size; however, N2 sorption studies showed that the MIP displayed a much higher BET surface (three times bigger) compared to the NIP, which is clearly indicative of the adequate formation of porosity in the former. The data obtained from FTIR analysis indicated the successful formation of imprinted polymer based on the experimental procedure applied. Kinetic adsorption studies revealed that the data fitted quite well with a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The BG adsorption isotherm was effectively described by the Langmuir isotherm model. The proposed MIP exhibited high selectivity toward BG in the presence of other interfering dyes due to the presence of specific recognition sites (IF = 2.53) on its high specific surface area (112 m2/g). The imprinted polymer also displayed a great potential when applied for the selective removal of BG in real river water samples, with recovery ranging from 99 to 101%.

Agro-waste extracted cellulose supported silver phosphate nanostructures as a green photocatalyst for improved photodegradation of RhB dye and industrial fertilizer effluents.

Project description:The efficiency and reusability of photocatalysts are the dominant factors for their pragmatic use. The visible light induced semiconductor silver phosphate is a superior photocatalyst effective under visible light but its stability is still an undiscussed issue. To overcome this stability issue in this present manuscript, eco-friendly agro-waste extracted cellulose supported silver phosphate nanostructures have been designed for the first time through a simple chemical process. At first, silver phosphate nanostructures were synthesized by the co-precipitation method. Then, different weights of cellulose were added to the silver nitrate solution to form cellulose supported silver phosphate nanostructures. The photodegradation efficiency for each weight ratio was examined in which the photocatalyst Ag-8 nanostructures showed a high rate (0.024 min-1) for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) using a low intensity tungsten bulb. Real sample analysis has also been carried out using this photocatalyst for the degradation of industrial fertilizer effluents. The degradation rate of all the nanostructures was found to be high in comparison to pristine silver phosphate as well as the extracted bare cellulose. The photocatalytic activity is enhanced because of the participation of cellulose as a support which makes an interface for silver phosphate and assists it in delaying the charge recombination period under visible light. To understand the photochemical reaction of electrons and holes, scavenger studies were also performed.

Green Synthesis of Luminescent Gold-Zinc Oxide Nanocomposites: Cell Imaging and Visible Light-Induced Dye Degradation.

Project description:Green synthesis of gold-zinc oxide (Au-ZnO) nanocomposite was successfully attempted under organic solvent-free conditions at room temperature. Prolonged stirring of the reaction mixture introduced crystallinity in the ZnO phase of Au-ZnO nanocomposites. Luminescence properties were observed in these crystalline Au-ZnO nanocomposites due to in situ embedding of gold nanoparticles (AuNP) of 5-6 nm diameter on the surface. This efficient strategy involved the reduction of Au(III) by Zn(0) powder in aqueous medium, where sodium citrate (NaCt) was the stabilizing agent. Reaction time and variation of reagent concentrations were investigated to control the Au:Zn ratio within the nanocomposites. The reaction with the least amount of NaCt for a long duration resulted in Au-ZnO/Zn(OH)2 nanocomposite. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the formation of Zn(OH)2 and ZnO in the same nanocomposite. These nanocomposites were reconnoitered as bioimaging materials in human cells and applied for visible light-induced photodegradation of rhodamine-B dye.
