Effective Regulation of ZnO Surface Facets for Enhanced Photoluminescence Properties Assisted by Zinc Quaternary Ammonium Salts.

ABSTRACT: Novel ZnO twined-mushroom structures highly exposed in (001̅) planes were fabricated via a facile solvothermal synthesis with assistance of a zinc quaternary ammonium salt in the methanol-water solvent to show enhanced photoluminescence properties. A series of ZnO morphologies regulated with different surface facets were obtained in both MeOH-H₂O and EtOH MeOH-H₂O solvents respectively, tuning the proportion of alcohol. The self-aggregation mechanism was proposed based on the time-controlled experiment to evaluate the formation of twined-mushroom structures. The selective adsorptions of anions from zinc salt precursors determine the shape of subunits and direct the subunits, which act as building blocks to form the order aggregations.

Highly Effective and Broad-Spectrum Antimicrobial Quaternary Ammonium Salts Containing Camphene Structure: Preparation, Surface-Active Properties, and Bioassay.

Project description:A series of novel quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) (4a-4n) comprising a camphene moiety were synthesized for the first time. Fourteen examples were prepared from camphene through Prins reaction, halogenation, and quaternarization, successively. The structures of the synthesized QASs were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Surface-active properties, emulsifying abilities, and foaming properties of the investigated compounds were then studied. The antimicrobial activities of these QASs against Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis), Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae), and fungi species (Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Aspergillus niger) were determined by the microdilution method. The results showed that the chemical structural factors, including types of substitutes and alkyl chain length, might be correlated with the lipid-water partition coefficient (cLog P), which played a critical role in the antimicrobial process. Compounds with alkyl chain lengths (N) in the range of 10-14 were relatively more active, while compounds bearing pyridinium, benzyl, methylimidazolium groups, or varied alkyl chain lengths (N < 5 and N > 16) were almost inactive. Compound 4k possessing a dodecyl group exhibited the most effective and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against almost all tested bacteria and fungi with the minimal inhibitory concentration values ranging from 0.24 to 0.98 μg/mL.

Quaternary ammonium salts based on (-)-borneol as effective inhibitors of influenza virus.

Project description:A series of compounds containing a 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptane fragment were evaluated for their antiviral activity against influenza A virus strain A/Puerto Rico/8/34 (H1N1) in vitro. The most potent antiviral compound proved to be a quaternary ammonium salt based on (-)-borneol, 10a. In in vitro experiments, compound 10a inhibited influenza A viruses (H1, H1pdm09, and H3 subtypes), with an IC50 value of 2.4-16.8 µM (depending on the virus), and demonstrated low toxicity (CC50 = 1311 µM). Mechanism-of-action studies for compound 10a revealed it to be most effective when added at the early stages of the viral life cycle. In direct haemolysis inhibition tests, compound 10a was shown to decrease the membrane-disrupting activity of influenza A virus strain A/Puerto Rico/8/34. According to molecular modelling results, the lead compound 10a can bind to different sites in the stem region of the viral hemagglutinin.

Quaternary ammonium salts based on caprylic acid as antimicrobial and surface-active agents.

Project description:In this work, amidequats and esterquats based on caprylic acid were investigated as promising compounds with surface properties and biological activity that are in harmony with the principles of green chemistry. Herein, caprylic acid, which is an essential component of the above compounds, is a noteworthy natural resource. Structural analysis was performed with the amphiphilic cations of the tested amidequats and esterquats, revealing two distinct factors, i.e., the elongation of the alkyl chain and the presence of two different functional groups; these factors undoubtedly affect the desired biological activity. These compounds were synthesized and characterized in terms of their physicochemical properties, among which surface activity is pivotal. In addition, the surfaces of the tested compounds were investigated through a detailed topographical analysis. The obtained results suggested that the esterquats exhibited higher surface activity, wettability and foamability than the amidequats. Antimicrobial studies, on the other hand, are not as conclusive. For shorter chains, esterquats are more active than amidequats, while for longer chains (over C12), the trend was the opposite. The amidequats and esterquats presented in this research may be a potential good replacement for antimicrobial formulations or as alternatives to surface-active agents used in industry.

Surface-Active Ionic Liquids and Surface-Active Quaternary Ammonium Salts from Synthesis, Characterization to Antimicrobial Properties.

Project description:The present work provides new evidence of the ongoing potential of surface-active ionic liquids (SAILs) and surface-active quaternary ammonium salts (surface-active QASs). To achieve this, a series of compounds were synthesized with a yield of ≥85%, and their thermal analyses were studied. Additionally, antimicrobial activity against both human pathogenic and soil microorganisms was investigated. Subsequently, their surface properties were explored with the aim of utilizing SAILs and surface-active QASs as alternatives to commercial amphiphilic compounds. Finally, we analyzed the wettability of the leaves' surface of plants occurring in agricultural fields at different temperatures (from 5 to 25 °C) and the model plant membrane of leaves. Our results show that the synthesized compounds exhibit higher activity than their commercial analogues such as, i.e., didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (C12TAB), for which the CMC values are 2 mM and 15 mM. The effectiveness of the antimicrobial properties of synthesized compounds relies on their hydrophobic nature accompanied by a cut-off effect. Moreover, the best wettability of the leaves' surface was observed at 25 °C. Our research has yielded valuable insights into the potential effectiveness of SAILs and surface-active QASs as versatile compounds, offering a promising alternative to established antimicrobials and crop protection agents, all the while preserving substantial surface activity.

Synthesis, Structure, Surface and Antimicrobial Properties of New Oligomeric Quaternary Ammonium Salts with Aromatic Spacers.

Project description:New dimeric, trimeric and tetrameric quaternary ammonium salts were accomplished by reaction of tertiary alkyldimethyl amines with appropriate bromomethylbenzene derivatives. A series of new cationic surfactants contain different alkyl chain lengths (C4-C18), aromatic spacers and different numbers of quaternary nitrogen atoms. The structure of the products was confirmed by spectral analysis (FT-IR, ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR and 2D-NMR), mass spectroscopy (ESI-MS), elemental analysis, as well as PM5 semiempirical methods. Compound (21) was also analyzed using X-ray crystallography. Critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 1,4-bis-[N-(1-alkyl)-N,N-dimethylammoniummethyl]benzene dibromides (3-9) was determined to characterize the aggregation behavior. The antimicrobial properties of novel QACs (Quaternary Ammonium Salts) were examined to set their minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values against fungi Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Penicillium chrysogenum and bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

TQAS have been prepared with an easy, atom efficient, economically sustainable strategy and tested as antimicrobial agents, reaching MIC values below 10 mg L-1. Distinctively, TQAS have low MIC and low cytotoxicity.

Hydrogenation of Alkynes and Olefins Catalyzed by Quaternary Ammonium Salts.

Project description:Catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated hydrocarbons to alkenes and alkanes using molecular hydrogen is one of the most fundamental transformations in organic synthesis. While methodologies involving transition metals as catalysts in homogeneous and heterogeneous processes have been well developed, metal-free catalytic hydrogenation offers an ideal approach for future chemistry. Herein, the common and inexpensive quaternary ammonium salts are first introduced as catalysts in the catalytic hydrogenation system for the transformations from alkynes or olefins into the corresponding olefins or alkanes. Interestingly, the hydrogenation process of alkynes can be controlled to selectively produce alkenes or alkanes under different conditions. Moreover, the possible mechanism is discussed in new insights into the catalytic behavior of quaternary ammonium salts.

Synthesis and Antimicrobial Evaluation of Bis-morpholine Triazine Quaternary Ammonium Salts.

Project description:Efficient, environmentally and economically sustainable, and nontoxic antibacterial products are of global relevance in the fight against microorganism contamination. In this work, an easy and straightforward method for the synthesis of bis-morpholino triazine quaternary ammonium salts (bis-mTQAS) is reported, starting from 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine or 2,4-dichloro-6-methoxy-1,3,5-triazine and various N-alkylmorpholines. Bis-mTQAS were tested as antimicrobials against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial strains. The best-performing bis-mTQAS were found to achieve total disinfection against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 at 50 and 400 μg/mL, respectively. Distinctively, bis-mTQAS with the highest antimicrobial efficiency had lowest cytotoxicity.

Synthesis, physiochemical property and antimicrobial activity of novel quaternary ammonium salts.

Project description:Twenty-four novel 5-phenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole-2-thiol (POT) analogues, benzo[d]oxazole-2-thiol, benzo[d]thiazole-2-thiol and 5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole-2-thiol-substituted N,N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl) quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) (5a-d, 6a-d, 7a-d, 10a-d, 13a-d, 16a-d) were prepared and characterised by FTIR, NMR and elemental analysis. Part of target compounds (5d, 6d, 7d, 10d, 13d, 16d) displayed potent antimicrobial effect against ten common pathogens (S. aureus, α-H-tococcus, β-H-tococcus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Canidia Albicans, Cytospora mandshurica, Physalospora piricola, Aspergillus niger) and had relatively low cytotoxity against two human cell lines (HaCat and LO2). TEM and SEM images of E. coli and S. aureus morphologies treated with 7d showed that the antibacterial mechanism might be the QAS fixing on cell wall surfaces and puncturing to result in the release of bacterial cytoplasm. This study provides new information of QAS, which could be used to design novel antimicrobial agents applied in clinic or agriculture.

Surface Functionalization of Polyethersulfone Membrane with Quaternary Ammonium Salts for Contact-Active Antibacterial and Anti-Biofouling Properties.

Project description:Biofilm is a significant cause for membrane fouling. Antibacterial-coated surfaces can inhibit biofilm formation by killing bacteria. In this study, polyethersulfone (PES) microfiltration membrane was photografted by four antibiotic quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) separately, which were synthesized from dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) by quaternization with butyl bromide (BB), octyl bromide (OB), dodecyl bromide (DB), or hexadecyl bromide (HB). XPS, ATR-FTIR, and SEM were used to confirm the surfaces' composition and morphology. After modification, the pores on PES-g-DMAEMA-BB and PES-g-DMAEMA-OB were blocked, while PES-g-DMAEMA-DB and PES-g-DMAEMA-HB were retained. We supposed that DMAEMA-BB and DMAEMA-OB aggregated on the membrane surface due to the activities of intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Bacteria testing found the antibacterial activities of the membranes increased with the length of the substituted alkyl chain. Correspondingly, little bacteria were observed on PES-g-DMAEMA-DB and PES-g-DMAEMA-HB by SEM. The antifouling properties were investigated by filtration of a solution of Escherichia coli. Compared with the initial membrane, PES-g-DMAEMA-DB and PES-g-DMAEMA-HB showed excellent anti-biofouling performance with higher relative flux recovery (RFR) of 88.3% and 92.7%, respectively. Thus, surface functionalization of the PES membrane with QACs can prevent bacteria adhesion and improve the anti-biofouling activity by the contact-active antibacterial property.
