Unconventional Hall effect induced by Berry curvature.

ABSTRACT: Berry phase and Berry curvature play a key role in the development of topology in physics and do contribute to the transport properties in solid state systems. In this paper, we report the finding of novel nonzero Hall effect in topological material ZrTe₅ flakes when the in-plane magnetic field is parallel and perpendicular to the current. Surprisingly, both symmetric and antisymmetric components with respect to magnetic field are detected in the in-plane Hall resistivity. Further theoretical analysis suggests that the magnetotransport properties originate from the anomalous velocity induced by Berry curvature in a tilted Weyl semimetal. Our work not only enriches the Hall family but also provides new insights into the Berry phase effect in topological materials.

Layer Hall effect induced by hidden Berry curvature in antiferromagnetic insulators.

Project description:The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi2Te4 thin films under perpendicular electric fields. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but non-zero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that, compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect is significantly enhanced in antiferromagnetic topological insulators. Our universal picture provides a paradigm for revealing the hidden physics as a result of the interplay between the global and local symmetries, and can be generalized in various scenarios.

2D-Berry-Curvature-Driven Large Anomalous Hall Effect in Layered Topological Nodal-Line MnAlGe.

Project description:Topological magnets comprising 2D magnetic layers with Curie temperatures (TC ) exceeding room temperature are key for dissipationless quantum transport devices. However, the identification of a material with 2D ferromagnetic planes that exhibits an out-of-plane-magnetization remains a challenge. This study reports a ferromagnetic, topological, nodal-line, and semimetal MnAlGe composed of square-net Mn layers that are separated by nonmagnetic Al-Ge spacers. The 2D ferromagnetic Mn layers exhibit an out-of-plane magnetization below TC ≈ 503 K. Density functional calculations demonstrate that 2D arrays of Mn atoms control the electrical, magnetic, and therefore topological properties in MnAlGe. The unique 2D distribution of the Berry curvature resembles the 2D Fermi surface of the bands that form the topological nodal line near the Fermi energy. A large anomalous Hall conductivity of ≈700 S cm-1 is obtained at 2 K and related to this nodal-line-induced 2D Berry curvature distribution. The high transition temperature, large anisotropic out-of-plane magnetism, and natural heterostructure-type atomic arrangements consisting of magnetic Mn and nonmagnetic Al/Ge elements render nodal-line MnAlGe one of the few, unique, and layered topological ferromagnets that have ever been observed.

Large anomalous Hall effect driven by a nonvanishing Berry curvature in the noncolinear antiferromagnet Mn3Ge.

Project description:It is well established that the anomalous Hall effect displayed by a ferromagnet scales with its magnetization. Therefore, an antiferromagnet that has no net magnetization should exhibit no anomalous Hall effect. We show that the noncolinear triangular antiferromagnet Mn3Ge exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect comparable to that of ferromagnetic metals; the magnitude of the anomalous conductivity is ~500 (ohm·cm)(-1) at 2 K and ~50 (ohm·cm)(-1) at room temperature. The angular dependence of the anomalous Hall effect measurements confirms that the small residual in-plane magnetic moment has no role in the observed effect except to control the chirality of the spin triangular structure. Our theoretical calculations demonstrate that the large anomalous Hall effect in Mn3Ge originates from a nonvanishing Berry curvature that arises from the chiral spin structure, and that also results in a large spin Hall effect of 1100 (ħ/e) (ohm·cm)(-1), comparable to that of platinum. The present results pave the way toward the realization of room temperature antiferromagnetic spintronics and spin Hall effect-based data storage devices.

Field-linear anomalous Hall effect and Berry curvature induced by spin chirality in the kagome antiferromagnet Mn3Sn.

Project description:During the past two decades, it has been established that a non-trivial electron wave-function topology generates an anomalous Hall effect (AHE), which shows itself as a Hall conductivity non-linear in magnetic field. Here, we report on an unprecedented case of field-linear AHE. In Mn3Sn, a kagome magnet, the out-of-plane Hall response, which shows an abrupt jump, was discovered to be a case of AHE. We find now that the in-plane Hall response, which is perfectly linear in magnetic field, is set by the Berry curvature of the wavefunction. The amplitude of the Hall response and its concomitant Nernst signal exceed by far what is expected in the semiclassical picture. We argue that magnetic field induces out-of-plane spin canting and thereafter gives rise to nontrivial spin chirality on the kagome lattice. In band structure, we find that the spin chirality modifies the topology by gapping out Weyl nodal lines unknown before, accounting for the AHE observed. Our work reveals intriguing unification of real-space Berry phase from spin chirality and momentum-space Berry curvature in a kagome material.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene.

Project description:Recent experimental progress in Hall measurements in bilayer graphene in the so-called open-face configuration of boron nitride encapsulated samples, together with the earlier technique of suspended samples, allows for precise observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in all 4 subbands of the Lowest Landau level (with n = 0 and n = 1) and in the next LL subbands (with n = 2) in the bilayer system. Many newly observed FQHE features do not agree with a conventional model of composite fermions and reveal a different hierarchy in comparison to monolayer graphene or GaAs 2DEG. We explain the peculiarity of the FQHE hierarchy in the bilayer system in the framework of a topological approach, which includes the composite fermion model as its special case. Inclusion of a topological effect caused by the hopping of electrons between the two sheets in the bilayer system allowed for an explanation of the FQHE hierarchy in the graphene bilayer in satisfactory accordance with the experimental observations.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in monolayer and bilayer graphene.

Project description:The commensurability condition is applied to determine the hierarchy of fractional fillings of Landau levels in monolayer and in bilayer graphene. The filling rates for fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene are found in the first three Landau levels in one-to-one agreement with the experimental data. The presence of even denominator filling fractions in the hierarchy for FQHE in bilayer graphene is explained. Experimentally observed hierarchy of FQHE in the first and second Landau levels in monolayer graphene and in the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene is beyond the conventional composite fermion interpretation but fits to the presented nonlocal topology commensurability condition.

Significant Unconventional Anomalous Hall Effect in Heavy Metal/Antiferromagnetic Insulator Heterostructures.

Project description:The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 nΩ cm is reported. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non-zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski-Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field.

Realization of tunable photonic spin Hall effect by tailoring the Pancharatnam-berry phase.

Project description:Recent developments in the field of photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) offer new opportunities for advantageous measurement of the optical parameters (refractive index, thickness, etc.) of nanostructures and enable spin-based photonics applications in the future. However, it remains a challenge to develop a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting for generation and manipulation of spin-polarized photons. Here, we demonstrate experimentally a scheme to realize the photonic SHE tunably by tailoring the space-variant Pancharatnam-Berry phase (PBP). It is shown that light beams whose polarization with a tunable spatial inhomogeneity can contribute to steering the space-variant PBP which creates a spin-dependent geometric phase gradient, thereby possibly realizing a tunable photonic SHE with any desired spin-dependent splitting. Our scheme provides a convenient method to manipulate the spin photon. The results can be extrapolated to other physical system with similar topological origins.

Berry curvature-induced local spin polarisation in gated graphene/WTe2 heterostructures.

Project description:Experimental control of local spin-charge interconversion is of primary interest for spintronics. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures combining graphene with a strongly spin-orbit coupled two-dimensional (2D) material enable such functionality by design. Electric spin valve experiments have thus far provided global information on such devices, while leaving the local interplay between symmetry breaking, charge flow across the heterointerface and aspects of topology unexplored. Here, we probe the gate-tunable local spin polarisation in current-driven graphene/WTe2 heterostructures through magneto-optical Kerr microscopy. Even for a nominal in-plane transport, substantial out-of-plane spin accumulation is induced by a corresponding out-of-plane current flow. We present a theoretical model which fully explains the gate- and bias-dependent onset and spatial distribution of the intense Kerr signal as a result of a non-linear anomalous Hall effect in the heterostructure, which is enabled by its reduced point group symmetry. Our findings unravel the potential of 2D heterostructure engineering for harnessing topological phenomena for spintronics, and constitute an important step toward nanoscale, electrical spin control.

Berry Population Analysis: Atomic Charges from the Berry Curvature in a Magnetic Field.

Project description:The Berry curvature is essential in Born-Oppenheimer molecular dynamics, describing the screening of the nuclei by the electrons in a magnetic field. Parts of the Berry curvature can be understood as the external magnetic field multiplied by an effective charge so that the resulting Berry force behaves like a Lorentz force during the simulations. Here, we investigate whether these effective charges can provide insight into the electronic structure of a given molecule or, in other words, whether we can perform a population analysis based on the Berry curvature. To develop our approach, we first rewrite the Berry curvature in terms of charges that partially capture the effective charges and their dependencies on the nuclear velocities. With these Berry charges and charge fluctuations, we then construct our population analysis yielding atomic charges and overlap populations. Calculations at the Hartree-Fock level reveal that the atomic charges are similar to those obtained from atomic polar tensors. However, since we additionally obtain an estimate for the fluctuations of the charges and a partitioning of the atomic charges into contributions from all atoms, we conclude that the Berry population analysis is a useful alternative tool to analyze the electronic structures of molecules.
