ABSTRACT: Introduction
The 19-item Wearing-Off questionnaire is used as a self-administered questionnaire assessing wearing-off (WO) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Thus, we aim to translate and validate the WOQ-19 into Filipino (FWOQ-19).Methods
We translated the WOQ-19 questionnaire into Filipino and used it to assess WO among Filipino PD patients. The original WOQ-19 was translated into Filipino using forward and backward translation by independent bilingual translators. WO is present if the patients checked at least 2 symptoms in the WOQ-19. Baseline demographic data, disease duration and medication use were collected. Internal consistency was measured using Cronbach's alpha. The Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) part IV and WOQ-32 were correlated with FWOQ-19 through Pearson's correlation coefficient to assess construct validity.Results and discussion
The FWOQ-19 was answered by 46 patients. The mean age of the participants was 60.8 ± 10.0 years (range, 40-86 years). The mean duration of PD was 10.9 ± 3.1 years (range, 1-26 years). Majority (n = 38, 82%) of patients claimed that WO is predictable and only 2 of the patients claimed that WO is unpredictable. The rest of the patients (n = 6, 13%) said that they did not experience WO. The internal consistency of the FWOQ-19 is acceptable (Cronbach's alpha 0.7808). There is a high correlation between WOQ-32 and FWOQ-19 (r = 0.8191). The troublesome symptoms for the patients were tremor, insomnia, weakness and slowness.Conclusion
The FWOQ-19 is a valid assessment tool for detecting wearing-off among Filipino-speaking PD patients.

Project description:The present study reports the multistage development and evaluation of a Spanish translation of the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ). The INQ measures the constructs of thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness, which the interpersonal theory of suicide proposes are proximal causes of suicidal desire. Participants were bilingual Hispanic college students in the United States (n = 56), heritage Spanish-speaking college students in the United States (n = 281), college students in Spain (n = 1,016), psychiatric inpatients in Mexico (n = 181), college students in Mexico (n = 239), and Spanish-speaking U.S. adults (n = 104). Results indicated that a 9-item 2-factor solution (INQ-S-9) provided good fit. Multiple group analyses were also consistent with measurement invariance across nationalities and clinical severity. Finally, both subscale scores demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity, and concurrent associations with scores on measures of suicide ideation. Project description:PurposeTo translate, culturally adapt and evaluate the Slovene version of the STOP-Bang questionnaire (SBQ) for use in the sleep clinic.MethodsStandard forward-backward translation and harmonisation of the Slovene translation of the SBQ were performed. Test-retest reliability was performed on a sample of healthy subjects. A cross-sectional study was performed with patients referred for a sleep study. Patients filled out the Slovene translation of the SBQ before undergoing sleep study.ResultsThe validation group consisted of 256 patients, of which 237 (92.6%) were included. Mean age was 52.5 ± 14.6, 63.3% of patients were male. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) (apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5) was present in 69.6% of patients, of whom 22.4% had mild (AHI ≥ 5 and < 15), 21.9% moderate (AHI ≥ 15 and < 30), and 25.3% severe (AHI ≥ 30) OSA. A SBQ score of 3 had a sensitivity of 92.1 (86.9-95.7), specificity of 44.4 (32.7-56.6), PPV of 79.2 (75.5-82.4) and AUC of 0.757 (95% CI 0.692-0.823; p < 0.001) for all OSA (AHI ≥ 5). Each increase in the SBQ score was associated with an increase in the probability of OSA.ConclusionThis study shows that the Slovene version of the SBQ is a valid tool for evaluating the risk of OSA in a sleep clinic.

Project description:BackgroundThe number of patients with chronic illness is increasing worldwide. These patients usually receive care from a primary care facility. The Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC) is a tool that is increasingly used in several countries to measure how the patients perceive the care they receive. The goal of this validation study is to provide and validate an extended version of the tool, the PACIC+ questionnaire, in Thailand.MethodsIn this observational validation study, patients with type 2 diabetes from the outpatient clinic at a university hospital in Thailand completed the PACIC+ at the clinic. For follow-up, they received the questionnaire per mail after four weeks. The Thai PACIC+ comprises 26 items, which map onto 5 subscales and a summary score related to the Chronic Care Model (CCM) and 5 subscales and a summary score related to the 5A model, a counseling model for behavioral changes. Data-analysis focused on the use of most extreme answering categories (> 15%), internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), and test-retest reliability. An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was performed for the CCM and the 5A model separately to examine the factor structure.ResultsA total of 151 patients participated. The average age of the sample was 63 ± 9 years (range 29-86 years). Fifty-three percent of the respondents were female. In the Delivery System subscale, 20% of patients reported the highest possible value; in all other subscales, relative frequencies of the most extreme categories did not exceed 15%. Cronbach's alpha per subscale varied from 0.58 to 0.81, while that of the summary scores were 0.89 and 0.91. The mean difference from the test-retest varied from - 0.06 to 0.17 across subscales. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin criterion for sampling adequacy (KMO) was good for both models as well as the Bartlett's test for sphericity p. While the factor loadings in rotated factor solution showed good concordance with the CCM, concordance was not as good for the 5A model, especially for the subscales "Assess" and "Advice".ConclusionA validated Thai version of the PACIC+ is now available to measure how the patients perceive the care they receive.

Project description:BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to validate a Greek translation of the Berlin Questionnaire (BQ) for obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) and to explore whether this screening questionnaire could be used to help identify primary care patients at greater risk of having OSAS. METHODS: We recruited 189 patients visiting a primary health care setting on the island of Crete, Greece. They all completed the Greek Version of the BQ. Patients were then referred to a Sleep Disorders Unit for evaluation of suspected sleep-disordered breathing. RESULTS: A PSG study was performed in 129 of the 189 subjects (68.3%). BQ identified 74.4% (n?=?96) of the patients as high-risk for OSAS and the remaining 25.6% (n?=?33) as low-risk. The sensitivity and specificity of BQ for OSAS diagnosis were 76% and 40%, respectively, for an apnoea-hypopnoea index (AHI) ?5 per hour but <15 per hour, 84% and 61% for an AHI ?15 per hour but ?30 per hour, and 79% and 39% for an AHI >30 per hour. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the Greek Version of the BQ is a useful instrument for identifying patients at risk for OSAS in primary health care in Greece. The findings of our study confirm that such screening tools should be used by primary care clinicians for OSAS prediction.

Project description:The Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ), developed in Australia in 2012 using a 'validity-driven' approach, has been rapidly adopted and is being applied in many countries and languages. It is a multidimensional measure comprising nine distinct domains that may be used for surveys, needs assessment, evaluation and outcomes assessment as well as for informing service improvement and the development of interventions. The aim of this paper is to describe the German translation of the HLQ and to present the results of the validation of the culturally adapted version. The HLQ comprises 44 items, which were translated and culturally adapted to the German context. This study uses data collected from a sample of 1,058 persons with chronic conditions. Statistical analyses include descriptive and confirmatory factor analyses. In one-factor congeneric models, all scales demonstrated good fit after few model adjustments. In a single, highly restrictive nine-factor model (no cross-loadings, no correlated errors) replication of the original English-language version was achieved with fit indices and psychometric properties similar to the original HLQ. Reliability for all scales was excellent, with a Cronbach's Alpha of at least 0.77. High to very high correlations between some HLQ factors were observed, suggesting that higher order factors may be present. Our rigorous development and validation protocol, as well as strict adaptation processes, have generated a remarkable reproduction of the HLQ in German. The results of this validation provide evidence that the HLQ is robust and can be recommended for use in German-speaking populations.Trial registrationGerman Clinical Trial Registration (DRKS): DRKS00000584. Project description:BackgroundStudies on clinical issues, including diagnostic strategies, are considered to be the core content of general practice research. The use of standardised instruments is regarded as an important component for the development of Primary Health Care research capacity. Demand for epidemiological cross-cultural comparisons in the international setting and the use of common instruments and definitions valid to each culture is bigger than ever. Dyspepsia is a common complaint in primary practice but little is known with respect to its incidence in Greece. There are some references about the Helicobacter Pylori infection in patients with functional dyspepsia or gastric ulcer in Greece but there is no specific instrument for the identification of dyspepsia. This paper reports on the validation and translation into Greek, of an English questionnaire for the identification of dyspepsia in the general population and discusses several possibilities of its use in the Greek primary care.MethodsThe selected English postal questionnaire for the identification of people with dyspepsia in the general population consists of 30 items and was developed in 1995. The translation and cultural adaptation of the questionnaire has been performed according to international standards. For the validation of the instrument the internal consistency of the items was established using the alpha coefficient of Chronbach, the reproducibility (test - retest reliability) was measured by kappa correlation coefficient and the criterion validity was calculated against the diagnosis of the patients' records using also kappa correlation coefficient.ResultsThe final Greek version of the postal questionnaire for the identification of dyspepsia in the general population was reliably translated. The internal consistency of the questionnaire was good, Chronbach's alpha was found to be 0.88 (95% CI: 0.81-0.93), suggesting that all items were appropriate to measure. Kappa coefficient for reproducibility (test - retest reliability) was found 0.66 (95% CI: 0.62-0.71), whereas the kappa analysis for criterion validity was 0.63 (95% CI: 0.36-0.89).ConclusionThis study indicates that the Greek translation is comparable with the English-language version in terms of validity and reliability, and is suitable for epidemiological research within the Greek primary health care setting.

Project description:Valid measures of physical activity are critical research tools. The objective of this study was to develop a Spanish translation of the Yale Physical Activity Survey, and to provide preliminary evidence of its validity in a population of Dominican patients with lower extremity arthritis.A Dominican bilingual health care professional translated the Yale Physical Activity Survey (YPAS) from English to Spanish. Several Dominican adults reviewed the translation to ensure it was linguistically and culturally appropriate. The questionnaire was back-translated to English by a North American researcher who is fluent in Spanish. Discrepancies between the original and back-translated versions were resolved by the translator and back-translator. The Spanish translation was administered to 108 Dominican subjects with advanced hip or knee arthritis prior to (N = 44) or one to four years following (N = 64) total joint replacement. We assessed construct validity by examining the association of YPAS scores and measures of functional status and pain (WOMAC), quality of life (EQ-5D) and the number of painful lower extremity joints.A higher YPAS Part II Activity Dimensions Summary Index score had weak to modest correlations with worse function and quality of life as measured with the WOMAC function scale (r = 0.21, p = 0.03), SF-36 Physical Activity Scale (r = 0.29, p = 0.004) and EQ-5D (r = 0.34, p = 0.0007). Total minutes of vigorous activity and walking had weak to modest correlation with these measures (WOMAC Function Scale (r = 0.15, p = 0.15), SF-36 Physical Activity Scale (r = 0.21, p = 0.04) and EQ-5D utility (r = 0.24, p = 0.02)). Correlations between the YPAS Part I energy expenditure score and these measures were lower (WOMAC Function Scale (r = 0.07, p = 0.49), SF-36 Physical Activity Scale (r = 0.03, p = 0.74) and EQ-5D utility (r = 0.18, p = 0.07)).We have developed a new Spanish translation of the Yale Physical Activity Survey and provided evidence of convergent validity in a sample of Dominican patients prior to or 1-4 years following total joint replacement.

Project description:BackgroundBack pain in childhood and adolescence increases the risk for back pain in adulthood, but validated assessment tools are scarce. The aim of this study was to validate the Young Spine Questionnaire (YSQ) in a German version (G-YSQ) in children and adolescents.MethodsChildren and adolescents between 10 and 16 years (N = 240, 166 females, mean age = 13.05 ± 1.70 years), recruited in chiropractic practices and schools, completed the G-YSQ (translated according to scientific guidelines) and the KIDSCREEN-10 (assessing health-related quality of life) at three time points. Test-retest reliability was determined calculating intraclass correlation coefficients [ICC(3,1)] using start and two week-data. Construct validity was investigated testing a priori hypotheses. To assess responsiveness, the patients additionally filled in the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) after three months and the area under the curve (AUC) of receiver operating curves was calculated.ResultsThe ICC(3,1) was 0.88 for pain intensity and pain frequency, indicating good reliability, 0.68 for week prevalence and 0.60 for point prevalence, indicating moderate reliability. Pain intensity, frequency and prevalence differed between patients and controls (p < 0.001) and, except point prevalence, between older (> 12 years) and younger control participants (p < 0.01). Health-related quality of life of participants with severe pain (in one or several spinal regions) was lower (KIDSCREEN-10, total score: F(4,230) = 7.26, p < 0.001; KIDSCREEN-10, self-rated general health: H(4) = 51.94, p < 0.001) than that of participants without pain or with moderate pain in one spinal region. Thus, altogether these findings indicate construct validity of the G-YSQ. The AUC was 0.69 (95 % CI = 0.57-0.82) and 0.67 (95 % CI = 0.54-0.80) for week and point prevalence, respectively, indicating insufficient responsiveness of the G-YSQ.ConclusionsApart from the question on point prevalence, construct validity and sufficient test-retest reliability was shown for the G-YSQ. Project description:BackgroundThe Short Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (SIBDQ) is a widely used instrument to assess Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) among inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. Our aim was to translate and adapt the SIBDQ so that it could be adequately used in Portugal.MethodsThis is a prospective design cohort study undertaken at a tertiary hospital. This study took place simultaneously with the first part of the SexIDI study, a study aiming to assess the impact of IBD on patients' sexual QoL. The original SIBDQ was translated by two independent translators and adapted by an IBD expert panel following the opinions of a convenient sample of 5 IBD patients. Afterwards, IBD patients from the outpatient clinic were consecutively invited to fill the Portuguese version of the questionnaire (SIBDQ-PT) at three different timepoints (0, 2, 4 weeks). Ninety-two patients completed the SIBDQ-PT at baseline, whereas 33 did so after 2 and 4 weeks (approximately). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 25, and the following aspects were analysed: reliability (through internal consistency, test-retest and intraclass correlation), validity (through exploratory factor analysis [EFA], and Pearson correlation coefficient for linear correlations), score distribution, and responsiveness analysis (through t-student tests).ResultsOverall, SIBDQ-PT was shown to have a high internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.80) and a high test-retest reliability (0.80 [CI 0.74-0.86] and 0.69 [CI 0.50-0.82]). EFA detected four dimensions-bowel, social, emotional and systemic. As expected, an overall SIBDQ-PT score was positively correlated with sexual satisfaction (r = 0.27; p < 0.05) and negatively correlated with depression (r = - 0.63; p < 0.01). Moreover, SIBDQ-PT was found to have an adequate score distribution, and to be responsive, as there was a significant subscore change for patients who reported an "overall worsening in general well-being" (0.93 ± 0.13 decrease; p < 0.01).ConclusionsThe Portuguese version of the SIBDQ hereby presented is a reliable, valid and responsive instrument that can be used to measure HRQoL among Portuguese IBD patients.

Project description:Objective:To translate the Mindfulness in Parenting Questionnaire (MIPQ) into Standard Mandarin and then explore the reliability and validity of this newly translated measure in a large sample of Chinese middle school parents. Methods:We translated the MIPQ using the forward-backward method and pilot tested it on a sample of parents of adolescents (aged 12-16 years) in China. Following minor modifications, 1057 Chinese parents (Mothers or Fathers) in two middle schools (one in the North and one in the South of China) completed the translated Chinese Mindfulness in Parenting Questionnaire (C-MIPQ). To determine test-retest reliability 121 participants completed the C-MIPQ again 2 weeks later. In order to test convergent validity, 395 participants completed the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale (MAAS), Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire-Short Version (PSDQ-short) and the Interpersonal Mindfulness in Parenting Scale (IM-P). The Chinese Perceived Stress Scale (CPSS), Beck Depression Scale (BDI-13), and socioeconomic status (SES) were completed in order to test discriminant validity. Results:Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the two-factor model indicated in the original study was a good fit. The total score of the scale and the scores of the two dimensions ('Mindful discipline' and 'Being in the moment with the child') were significantly positively correlated with the total score of the MAAS, IM-P and the authoritative parenting style in the PSDQ-short, demonstrating convergent validity. Discriminant validity was established as there was no difference in C-MIPQ sub-scale scores across any of the SES variables except for levels of education (parents with higher education had higher scores on the 'being in the moment with the child' subscale). In addition, the C-MIPQ was negatively related to stress and depression. Cronbach's alpha of the total scale was 0.93 (and 0.88, 0.89 for the two dimensions of the C-MIPQ) indicating excellent internal consistency. Test-retest reliability was good (intra-class correlation of 0.83). Conclusion:This study is the first step toward establishing the psychometric properties of the C-MIPQ for measuring mindful parenting in parents of adolescents aged 12-16 years; additional studies will be needed in order to test this further.
