Ultra-thin metal-organic framework nanoribbons.

ABSTRACT: Structure engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) at the nanometer scale is attracting increasing interest due to their unique properties and new functions that normally cannot be achieved in bulk MOF crystals. Here, we report the preparation of ultra-thin MOF nanoribbons (NRBs) by using metal-hydroxide nanostructures as the precursors. Importantly, this general method can be used to synthesize various kinds of ultra-thin MOF NRBs, such as MBDC (M = Co, Ni; BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate), NiCoBDC, CoTCPP (TCPP = tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) and MIL-53(Al) NRBs. As a proof-of-concept application, the as-prepared ultra-thin CoBDC NRBs have been successfully used as a fluorescent sensing platform for DNA detection, which exhibited excellent sensitivity and selectivity. The present strategy might open an avenue to prepare MOF nanomaterials with new structures and unique properties for various promising applications.

Electrostatic Design of Polar Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films.

Project description:In recent years, optical and electronic properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have increasingly shifted into the focus of interest of the scientific community. Here, we discuss a strategy for conveniently tuning these properties through electrostatic design. More specifically, based on quantum-mechanical simulations, we suggest an approach for creating a gradient of the electrostatic potential within a MOF thin film, exploiting collective electrostatic effects. With a suitable orientation of polar apical linkers, the resulting non-centrosymmetric packing results in an energy staircase of the frontier electronic states reminiscent of the situation in a pin-photodiode. The observed one dimensional gradient of the electrostatic potential causes a closure of the global energy gap and also shifts core-level energies by an amount equaling the size of the original band gap. The realization of such assemblies could be based on so-called pillared layer MOFs fabricated in an oriented fashion on a solid substrate employing layer by layer growth techniques. In this context, the simulations provide guidelines regarding the design of the polar apical linker molecules that would allow the realization of MOF thin films with the (vast majority of the) molecular dipole moments pointing in the same direction.

pH-Responsive Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for Drug Delivery.

Project description:In this work, surface-supportive MIL-88B(Fe) was explored as a pH-stimuli thin film to release ibuprofen as a model drug. We used surface plasmon resonance microscopy to study the pH-responsive behaviors of MIL-88B(Fe) film in real time. A dissociation constant of (6.10 ± 0.86) × 10-3 s-1 was measured for the MIL-88B(Fe) film in an acidic condition (pH 6.3), which is about 10 times higher than the dissociation of the same film in a neutral pH condition. MIL-88B(Fe) films are also capable of loading around 6.0 μg/cm2 of ibuprofen, which was measured using a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). Drug release profiles were compared in both acidic and neutral pH conditions (pH 6.3 and 7.4) using a QCM cell to model the drug release in healthy body systems and those containing inflammatory tissues or cancerous tumors. It was found that the amount of drug released in acidic environments had been significantly higher compared to that in a neutral system within 55 h of testing time. The pH-sensitive chemical bond breaking between Fe3+ and the carboxylate ligands is the leading cause of drug release in acidic conditions. This work exhibits the potential of using MOF thin films as pH-triggered drug delivery systems.

Thin Films of Metal-Organic Framework Interfaces Obtained by Laser Evaporation.

Project description:Properties such as large surface area, high pore volume, high chemical and thermal stability, and structural flexibility render zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) well-suited materials for gas separation, chemical sensors, and optical and electrical devices. For such applications, film processing is a prerequisite. Herein, matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation (MAPLE) was successfully used as a single-step deposition process to fabricate ZIF-8 films. By correlating laser fluency and controlling the specific transfer of lab-synthesized ZIF-8, films with user-controlled physical and chemical properties were obtained. Films' characteristics were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The analysis showed that frameworks of ZIF-8 can be deposited successfully and controllably to yield polycrystalline films. The deposited films maintained the integrity of the individual ZIF-8 framework, while undergoing minor crystalline and surface chemistry changes. No significant changes in particle size were observed. Our study demonstrated control over both the MAPLE deposition conditions and the outcome, as well as the suitability of the listed deposition method to create composite architectures that could potentially be used in applications ranging from selective membranes to gas sensors.

Chemically routed interpore molecular diffusion in metal-organic framework thin films.

Project description:Transport diffusivity of molecules in a porous solid is constricted by the rate at which molecules move from one pore to the other, along the concentration gradient, i.e. by following Fickian diffusion. In heterogeneous porous materials, i.e. in the presence of pores of different sizes and chemical environments, diffusion rate and directionality remain tricky to estimate and adjust. In such a porous system, we have realized that molecular diffusion direction can be orthogonal to the concentration gradient. To experimentally determine this complex diffusion rate dependency and get insight of the microscopic diffusion pathway, we have designed a model nanoporous structure, metal-organic framework (MOF). In this model two chemically and geometrically distinct pore windows are spatially oriented by an epitaxial, layer-by-layer growth method. The specific design of the nanoporous channels and quantitative mass uptake rate measurements have indicated that the mass uptake is governed by the interpore diffusion along the direction orthogonal to the concentration gradient. This revelation allows chemically carving the nanopores, and accelerating the interpore diffusion and kinetic diffusion selectivity.

Convergent and Divergent Paired Electrodeposition of Metal-Organic Framework Thin Films.

Project description:Employing the environmentally friendly methods for synthesis of the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an urgent need and sustainable development in the synthesis of these compounds is essential. In this way, ignoring the counter electrode reaction is a potentially negative point from green chemistry standpoint which increases some issues like energy consumption and reaction time. We wish to introduce the "paired electrodeposition" (PED) technique as a new method for the simultaneous synthesis and deposition of the MOF thin films (MOFTFs). This protocol implements the uniform pattern of two MOFTF modified substrates by "convergent (CPED: Zna/Znc-MOFTFs) and divergent (DPED: Cua/Znc-MOFTFs) paired electrodeposition" via a one-step synthesis. With the rule of thumb, enhanced energy efficiency and atom economy, increasing electrochemical yield, time-saving along with a variety of products are advantages of this technique. Besides, the "Electrode Modification Efficiency" has introduced for the evaluation of functionality and modification efficiency of electrochemical heterogeneous systems, especially MOFTFs. To investigate this concept, we synthesized Zn3(BTC)2 and Cu3(BTC)2 as MOF models under constant current electrolysis in water and at room temperature. This work can make a breakthrough in the green synthesis of metal-organic frameworks.

Comparison of Fabrication Methods of Metal-Organic Framework Optical Thin Films.

Project description:Homogeneous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-based optical thin films have attracted increasing attention, since they can potentially be used as active components in optical/opt-electrical devices, and how to fabricate MOF thin films with high quality is the premise of practically using them. Herein, five fabrication methods of MOF films are systematically investigated and compared from the aspects of appearance, reflectivity, micro-morphology, surface roughness, and optical properties of the films. The famous robust Zr-based MOF, UiO-66 (UiO = University of Oslo) is chosen as a model, and the five methods are spin-coating, dip-coating, self-assembly, direct growth, and the stepwise layer by layer growth method. This study provides fundamental support for the application of MOFs in the optical field.

Insulator-to-metal-like transition in thin films of a biological metal-organic framework.

Project description:Temperature-induced insulator-to-metal transitions (IMTs) where the electrical resistivity can be altered by over tens of orders of magnitude are most often accompanied by structural phase transition in the system. Here, we demonstrate an insulator-to-metal-like transition (IMLT) at 333 K in thin films of a biological metal-organic framework (bio-MOF) which was generated upon an extended coordination of the cystine (dimer of amino acid cysteine) ligand with cupric ion (spin-1/2 system) - without appreciable change in the structure. Bio-MOFs are crystalline porous solids and a subclass of conventional MOFs where physiological functionalities of bio-molecular ligands along with the structural diversity can primarily be utilized for various biomedical applications. MOFs are usually electrical insulators (so as our expectation with bio-MOFs) and can be bestowed with reasonable electrical conductivity by the design. This discovery of electronically driven IMLT opens new opportunities for bio-MOFs, to emerge as strongly correlated reticular materials with thin film device functionalities.

Gd Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film for On-Chip Local Magnetic Refrigeration.

Project description:Dense metal-organic frameworks with high spin paramagnetic nodes are competitive materials for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, particularly in applications for which local cooling is advantageous. We focus on obtaining thin films of gadolinium formate, which has a large volumetric magnetocaloric effect. Continuous and homogeneous deposits of gadolinium formate are successfully formed on silicon by means of aerosol jet printing, with control over the film thickness from 0.35 μm up to 2.5 μm. The excellent cooling power of the deposits is evidenced via direct measurements of the cooling of a 200 μm silicon wafer down to sub-K temperatures by a single demagnetization from 1 T and 2 K, thereby demonstrating the potential of this approach for on-chip local magnetic refrigeration.

Iron-containing metal-organic framework thin film as a drug delivery system.

Project description:Selective bulk metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have exhibited great potential in biomedical applications. However, topical treatments and drug elution coatings will require uniform films as drug delivery systems. This work studies the use of surface supportive MOF thin films for drug loading and releasing. More specifically, we focus on an iron-containing MOF, MIL-88B(Fe), on a COOH-terminated self-assembled monolayer (SAM) modified Au surface for encapsulating ibuprofen as a model drug. A combined experimental and computational approach was employed to study the fabrication of MIL-88B(Fe) film on functionalized Au surfaces. We used several surface characterization techniques, including infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, to confirm the chemical composition and morphological changes of the surface after each modification step. The resulting MIL-88B(Fe) thin film was found capable of loading 8.7 wt% of ibuprofen using quartz crystal microbalance analysis. Moreover, we applied cluster simulations to study the binding mechanisms of MIL-88B(Fe) and its interactions with ibuprofen based on the density functional theory (DFT). The unsaturated Fe site was confirmed kinetically more favorable to bind to the COOH-end group on the SAM. Hydrogen bonding and π-CH interactions between ibuprofen and MIL-88B(Fe) promote ibuprofen being retained inside of the cages of MIL-88B(Fe).

Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from a Cobaloxime-Based Metal-Organic Framework Thin Film.

Project description:Molecular hydrogen evolution catalysts (HECs) are synthetically tunable and often exhibit high activity, but they are also hampered by stability concerns and practical limitations associated with their use in the homogeneous phase. Their incorporation as integral linker units in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) can remedy these shortcomings. Moreover, the extended three-dimensional structure of MOFs gives rise to high catalyst loadings per geometric surface area. Herein, we report a new MOF that exclusively consists of cobaloximes, a widely studied HEC, that act as metallo-linkers between hexanuclear zirconium clusters. When grown on conducting substrates and under applied reductive potential, the cobaloxime linkers promote electron transport through the film as well as function as molecular HECs. The obtained turnover numbers are orders of magnitude higher than those of any other comparable cobaloxime system, and the molecular integrity of the cobaloxime catalysts is maintained for at least 18 h of electrocatalysis. Being one of the very few hydrogen evolving electrocatalytic MOFs based on a redox-active metallo-linker, this work explores uncharted terrain for greater catalyst diversity and charge transport pathways.
