Odd Integer Quantum Hall States with Interlayer Coherence in Twisted Bilayer Graphene.

ABSTRACT: We report on the quantum Hall effect in two stacked graphene layers rotated by 2°. The tunneling strength among the layers can be varied from very weak to strong via the mechanism of magnetic breakdown when tuning the density. Odd-integer quantum Hall physics is not anticipated in the regime of suppressed tunneling for balanced layer densities, yet it is observed. We interpret this as a signature of Coulomb interaction induced interlayer coherence and Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons that form at half filling of each layer. A density imbalance gives rise to reentrant behavior due to a phase transition from the interlayer coherent state to incompressible behavior caused by simultaneous condensation of both layers in different quantum Hall states. With increasing overall density, magnetic breakdown gains the upper hand. As a consequence of the enhanced interlayer tunneling, the interlayer coherent state and the phase transition vanish.

Broken-Symmetry Quantum Hall States in Twisted Bilayer Graphene.

Project description:Twisted bilayer graphene offers a unique bilayer two-dimensional-electron system where the layer separation is only in sub-nanometer scale. Unlike Bernal-stacked bilayer, the layer degree of freedom is disentangled from spin and valley, providing eight-fold degeneracy in the low energy states. We have investigated broken-symmetry quantum Hall (QH) states and their transitions due to the interplay of the relative strength of valley, spin and layer polarizations in twisted bilayer graphene. The energy gaps of the broken-symmetry QH states show an electron-hole asymmetric behaviour, and their dependence on the induced displacement field are opposite between even and odd filling factor states. These results strongly suggest that the QH states with broken valley and spin symmetries for individual layer become hybridized via interlayer tunnelling, and the hierarchy of the QH states is sensitive to both magnetic field and displacement field due to charge imbalance between layers.

Stacking angle-tunable photoluminescence from interlayer exciton states in twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:Twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) is a metallic material with two degenerate van Hove singularity transitions that can rehybridize to form interlayer exciton states. Here we report photoluminescence (PL) emission from tBLG after resonant 2-photon excitation, which tunes with the interlayer stacking angle, θ. We spatially image individual tBLG domains at room-temperature and show a five-fold resonant PL-enhancement over the background hot-electron emission. Prior theory predicts that interlayer orbitals mix to create 2-photon-accessible strongly-bound (~0.7 eV) exciton and continuum-edge states, which we observe as two spectral peaks in both PL excitation and excited-state absorption spectra. This peak splitting provides independent estimates of the exciton binding energy which scales from 0.5-0.7 eV with θ = 7.5° to 16.5°. A predicted vanishing exciton-continuum coupling strength helps explain both the weak resonant PL and the slower 1 ps-1 exciton relaxation rate observed. This hybrid metal-exciton behavior electron thermalization and PL emission are tunable with stacking angle for potential enhancements in optoelectronic and fast-photosensing graphene-based applications.

Observation of 1/3 fractional quantum Hall physics in balanced large angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:Magnetotransport of conventional semiconductor based double layer systems with barrier suppressed interlayer tunneling has been a rewarding subject due to the emergence of an interlayer coherent state that behaves as an excitonic superfluid. Large angle twisted bilayer graphene offers unprecedented strong interlayer Coulomb interaction, since both layer thickness and layer spacing are of atomic scale and a barrier is no more needed as the twist induced momentum mismatch suppresses tunneling. The extra valley degree of freedom also adds richness. Here we report the observation of fractional quantum Hall physics at 1/3 total filling for balanced layer population in this system. Monte Carlo simulations support that the ground state is also an excitonic superfluid but the excitons are composed of fractional rather than elementary charges. The observed phase transitions with an applied displacement field at this and other fractional fillings are also addressed with simulations. They reveal ground states with different topology and symmetry properties.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in bilayer graphene.

Project description:Recent experimental progress in Hall measurements in bilayer graphene in the so-called open-face configuration of boron nitride encapsulated samples, together with the earlier technique of suspended samples, allows for precise observation of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in all 4 subbands of the Lowest Landau level (with n = 0 and n = 1) and in the next LL subbands (with n = 2) in the bilayer system. Many newly observed FQHE features do not agree with a conventional model of composite fermions and reveal a different hierarchy in comparison to monolayer graphene or GaAs 2DEG. We explain the peculiarity of the FQHE hierarchy in the bilayer system in the framework of a topological approach, which includes the composite fermion model as its special case. Inclusion of a topological effect caused by the hopping of electrons between the two sheets in the bilayer system allowed for an explanation of the FQHE hierarchy in the graphene bilayer in satisfactory accordance with the experimental observations.

Quasicrystalline 30° twisted bilayer graphene as an incommensurate superlattice with strong interlayer coupling.

Project description:The interlayer coupling can be used to engineer the electronic structure of van der Waals heterostructures (superlattices) to obtain properties that are not possible in a single material. So far research in heterostructures has been focused on commensurate superlattices with a long-ranged Moiré period. Incommensurate heterostructures with rotational symmetry but not translational symmetry (in analogy to quasicrystals) are not only rare in nature, but also the interlayer interaction has often been assumed to be negligible due to the lack of phase coherence. Here we report the successful growth of quasicrystalline 30° twisted bilayer graphene (30°-tBLG), which is stabilized by the Pt(111) substrate, and reveal its electronic structure. The 30°-tBLG is confirmed by low energy electron diffraction and the intervalley double-resonance Raman mode at 1383 cm-1 Moreover, the emergence of mirrored Dirac cones inside the Brillouin zone of each graphene layer and a gap opening at the zone boundary suggest that these two graphene layers are coupled via a generalized Umklapp scattering mechanism-that is, scattering of a Dirac cone in one graphene layer by the reciprocal lattice vector of the other graphene layer. Our work highlights the important role of interlayer coupling in incommensurate quasicrystalline superlattices, thereby extending band structure engineering to incommensurate superstructures.

Unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect in monolayer and bilayer graphene.

Project description:The commensurability condition is applied to determine the hierarchy of fractional fillings of Landau levels in monolayer and in bilayer graphene. The filling rates for fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene are found in the first three Landau levels in one-to-one agreement with the experimental data. The presence of even denominator filling fractions in the hierarchy for FQHE in bilayer graphene is explained. Experimentally observed hierarchy of FQHE in the first and second Landau levels in monolayer graphene and in the zeroth Landau level in bilayer graphene is beyond the conventional composite fermion interpretation but fits to the presented nonlocal topology commensurability condition.

Edge states and integer quantum Hall effect in topological insulator thin films.

Project description:The integer quantum Hall effect is a topological state of quantum matter in two dimensions, and has recently been observed in three-dimensional topological insulator thin films. Here we study the Landau levels and edge states of surface Dirac fermions in topological insulators under strong magnetic field. We examine the formation of the quantum plateaux of the Hall conductance and find two different patterns, in one pattern the filling number covers all integers while only odd integers in the other. We focus on the quantum plateau closest to zero energy and demonstrate the breakdown of the quantum spin Hall effect resulting from structure inversion asymmetry. The phase diagrams of the quantum Hall states are presented as functions of magnetic field, gate voltage and chemical potential. This work establishes an intuitive picture of the edge states to understand the integer quantum Hall effect for Dirac electrons in topological insulator thin films.

Visualizing delocalized correlated electronic states in twisted double bilayer graphene.

Project description:The discovery of interaction-driven insulating and superconducting phases in moiré van der Waals heterostructures has sparked considerable interest in understanding the novel correlated physics of these systems. While a significant number of studies have focused on twisted bilayer graphene, correlated insulating states and a superconductivity-like transition up to 12 K have been reported in recent transport measurements of twisted double bilayer graphene. Here we present a scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy study of gate-tunable twisted double bilayer graphene devices. We observe splitting of the van Hove singularity peak by ~20 meV at half-filling of the conduction flat band, with a corresponding reduction of the local density of states at the Fermi level. By mapping the tunneling differential conductance we show that this correlated system exhibits energetically split states that are spatially delocalized throughout the different regions in the moiré unit cell, inconsistent with order originating solely from onsite Coulomb repulsion within strongly-localized orbitals. We have performed self-consistent Hartree-Fock calculations that suggest exchange-driven spontaneous symmetry breaking in the degenerate conduction flat band is the origin of the observed correlated state. Our results provide new insight into the nature of electron-electron interactions in twisted double bilayer graphene and related moiré systems.

Twisted bilayer zigzag-graphene nanoribbon junctions with tunable edge states.

Project description:Stacking two-dimensional layered materials such as graphene and transitional metal dichalcogenides with nonzero interlayer twist angles has recently become attractive because of the emergence of novel physical properties. Stacking of one-dimensional nanomaterials offers the lateral stacking offset as an additional parameter for modulating the resulting material properties. Here, we report that the edge states of twisted bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbons (TBZGNRs) can be tuned with both the twist angle and the stacking offset. Strong edge state variations in the stacking region are first revealed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We construct and characterize twisted bilayer zigzag graphene nanoribbon (TBZGNR) systems on a Au(111) surface using scanning tunneling microscopy. A detailed analysis of three prototypical orthogonal TBZGNR junctions exhibiting different stacking offsets by means of scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals emergent near-zero-energy states. From a comparison with DFT calculations, we conclude that the emergent edge states originate from the formation of flat bands whose energy and spin degeneracy are highly tunable with the stacking offset. Our work highlights fundamental differences between 2D and 1D twistronics and spurs further investigation of twisted one-dimensional systems.

Electronic confinement induced quantum dot behavior in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene.

Project description:Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBLG) has emerged as a versatile platform to explore correlated electron phases driven primarily by low-energy flat bands in moiré superlattices. While techniques for controlling the twist angle between graphene layers have spurred rapid experimental progress, understanding the effects of doping inhomogeneity on electronic transport in correlated electron systems remains challenging. In this work, we investigate the interplay of confinement and doping inhomogeneity on the electrical transport properties of TBLG by leveraging device dimensions and twist angles. We show that reducing device dimensions can magnify disorder potentials caused by doping inhomogeneity, resulting in pronounced carrier confinement. This phenomenon is evident in charge transport measurements, where the Coulomb blockade effect is observed. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal a large variation in the activation gap across the device. These findings highlight the critical role of doping inhomogeneity in TBLG and its significant impact on the transport properties of the system.
