Project description:This work demonstrates very high removal rates (below the detection limit of 0.045 ppb) of inorganic arsenic from water using electrospun polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membranes enhanced by the addition of functionalized graphene oxide in membrane distillation. This shows potential for applications in the many parts of the world suffering from arsenic-contaminated groundwater. These membranes were enhanced by the addition of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with superhydrophobic polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane molecules (POSS-rGO) into the spinning solutions. The flux of the best-performing rGO-enhanced membrane (containing 2 wt % POSS-rGO) was 21.5% higher than that of the pure PVDF membrane and almost double that of a commercial polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane after 24 h of testing, with rejection values exceeding 99.9%. Furthermore, the flux of this membrane was stable over 5 days (∼28 L m-2 h-1) of continuous testing and was more stable than those of the PTFE and control membranes when treating a concentrated fouling solution of calcium carbonate and iron(III) sulfate heptahydrate. It also achieved higher permeate quality in these conditions. The Young's modulus and ultimate tensile strength of the best-performing membrane increased by 38 and 271%, respectively, compared to the pure polymer membrane, while both had similar porosities of ∼91%.

Project description:Membrane distillation (MD) is an emerging desalination technology that exploits phase change to separate water vapor from saline based on low-grade energy. As MD membranes come into contact with saline for days or weeks during desalination, membrane pores have to be sufficiently small (typically <0.2 µm) to avoid saline wetting into the membrane. However, in order to achieve high distillation flux, the pore size should be large enough to maximize transmembrane vapor transfer. These conflicting requirements of pore geometry pose a challenge to membrane design and currently hinder broader applications of MD. To address this fundamental challenge, we developed a super liquid-repellent membrane with hierarchical porous structures by coating a polysiloxane nanofilament network on a commercial micro-porous polyethersulfone membrane matrix. The fluorine-free nanofilament coating effectively prevents membrane wetting under high hydrostatic pressure (>11.5 bar) without compromising vapor transport. With large inner micro-porous structures, the nanofilament-coated membrane improves the distillation flux by up to 60% over the widely used commercially available membranes, while showing excellent salt rejection and operating stability. Our approach will allow the fabrication of high-performance composite membranes with multi-scale porous structures that have wide-ranging applications beyond desalination, such as in cleaning wastewater.

Project description:The results of osmotic membrane distillation carried out for 2.5 years were presented in this work. The influence of the process conditions, such as temperature and brine concentration on the permeate flux, was investigated. The saturated NaCl solutions and distilled water were used as a stripping solution and feed, respectively. A continuous regeneration of stripping solution was conducted using a method of natural evaporation from the surface of Bia?ecki rings to the air surrounding the installation. The possibilities of application of Accurel PP S6/2 hydrophobic polypropylene membranes were tested. It was studied whether a saturation stripping solution does not cause scaling and wettability of membranes. It was found that most of the pores in the used membranes were non-wetted, and the salt retention over 99% was maintained during a study period. However, the obtained permeate flux was decreased by 10-20%. The SEM examinations revealed that it was caused by amorphous deposit, which was formed on the membrane surface on the brine side. The SEM-EDS analysis demonstrated that the deposit composition mainly included Si and O.

Project description:Current membrane distillation (MD) is challenged by the inefficiency of water thermal separation from dissolved solutes, controlled by membrane porosity and thermal conductivity. Existing petroleum-derived polymeric membranes face major development barriers. Here, we demonstrate a first robust MD membrane directly fabricated from sustainable wood material. The hydrophobic nanowood membrane had high porosity (89 ± 3%) and hierarchical pore structure with a wide pore size distribution of crystalline cellulose nanofibrils and xylem vessels and lumina (channels) that facilitate water vapor transportation. The thermal conductivity was extremely low in the transverse direction, which reduces conductive heat transport. However, high thermal conductivity along the fiber enables efficient thermal dissipation along the axial direction. As a result, the membrane demonstrated excellent intrinsic vapor permeability (1.44 ± 0.09 kg m-1 K-1 s-1 Pa-1) and thermal efficiency (~70% at 60°C). The properties of thermal efficiency, water flux, scalability, and sustainability make nanowood highly desirable for MD applications.

Project description:In the research reported in this paper, membrane distillation was employed to recover water from a concentrated saline petrochemical effluent. According to the results, the use of membrane distillation is technically feasible when pre-treatments are employed to mitigate fouling. A mathematical model was used to evaluate the fouling mechanism, showing that the deposition of particulate and precipitated material occurred in all tests; however, the fouling dynamic depends on the pre-treatment employed (filtration, or filtration associated with a pH adjustment). The deposit layer formed by particles is not cohesive, allowing its entrainment to the bulk flow. The precipitate fouling showed a minimal tendency to entrainment. Also, precipitate fouling served as a coupling agent among adjacent particles, increasing the fouling layer cohesion.

Project description:The hydrophobicity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is critical in enhancing the separation process in membrane distillation. Herein, a new superhydrophobic University of Oslo 66 (UiO-66) MOFs was successfully constructed on the top of alumina hollow fibre (AHF) membrane for desalination purposes. The fabrication methodology of the membrane involved in situ growth of pure crystalline UiO-66 on top of AHF and post-synthetic modification by fluorosilane grafting. The resultant membrane was characterised to study the physicochemical properties of the pristine and modified membrane. A superhydrophobic UiO-66 with a contact angle of 163.6° and high liquid entry pressure was obtained by introducing a highly branched fluorocarbon chain while maintaining its crystallinity. As a result, the modified membrane achieved 14.95 L/m2∙h water flux and 99.9% NaCl rejection with low energy consumption in the direct contact membrane distillation process. Furthermore, the high surface energy contributed by UiO-66 is maximised to produce the maximum number of accessible sites for the grafting process. The synergistic effect of surface hydrophobicity and porous UiO-66 membrane in trapping water vapour shows great potential for desalination application.

Project description:Summary With growing demand for freshwater resources, membrane distillation (MD) attracts intensive attention owing to the possibility of reclaiming almost 100% freshwater with superhydrophobic membranes as the pivotal separation units. Current superhydrophobic membrane still suffers relatively complex preparation process and limited membrane flux. Herein, we developed a promising route to fabricate a high-flux superhydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane by a simple solute and solvent co-crystallization (SSCC) method, which endowed the membrane ultra-high porosity and flux. We also found that the pore size of superhydrophobic membrane can be adjusted by controlling the crystallization process of DMSO, which gave rise to membrane higher flexibility. The membrane exhibited the outperforming desalination performance even in multiple harsh environments including different temperature, salty concentration, and pH, with/without humic acid. The membrane also displayed distinguished anti-fouling performance and long-term stability, which is quite significant for practical application. Project description:Omniphobic membranes are attractive for membrane distillation (MD) because of their superior wetting resistance. However, a design framework for MD membrane remains incomplete, due to the complexity of omniphobic membrane fabrication and the lack of fundamental relationship between wetting resistance and water vapor permeability. Here we present a particle-free approach that enables rapid fabrication of monolithic omniphobic membranes for MD desalination. Our monolithic omniphobic membranes display excellent wetting resistance and water purification performance in MD desalination of hypersaline feedwater containing surfactants. We identify that a trade-off exists between wetting resistance and water vapor permeability of our monolithic MD membranes. Utilizing membranes with tunable wetting resistance and permeability, we elucidate the underlying mechanism of such trade-off. We envision that our fabrication method as well as the mechanistic insight into the wetting resistance-vapor permeability trade-off will pave the way for smart design of MD membranes in diverse water purification applications.

Project description:Thermoelectric membrane distillation has shown promise as a new membrane distillation technique capable of improving energy consumption metrics. This study features an experimental design approach to investigating the performance of a thermoelectric membrane distillation system. Screening and full factorial designs were implemented in Minitab 16 to determine the optimal process conditions for minimizing the specific energy consumption of the system. The process parameter with the most significant impact on the specific energy consumption of thermoelectric membrane distillation systems was determined and a mathematical model for predicting the specific energy consumption was derived. The study showed that adjusting the feed flowrate, the most influential continuous parameter, from a sub-optimal level to an optimal level, while keeping other process variables at their optimal levels, could lead to a 34% reduction in the system's specific energy consumption. At the optimized process parameters of the thermoelectric membrane distillation system, the minimized specific energy consumption fell about 35% below the threshold value of 1,000 kWh/m3 found among the efficient membrane distillation systems in the literature.•Thermoelectric heat exchanger provides the driving force for the membrane distillation process•Seven process variables are assumed to influence the energy consumption of the distillation process•The variables are screened before being analyzed in a full factorial experimental design.
