Anion binding properties of a hollow PdL-cage.

ABSTRACT: The hollow [PdL][BArF]2 complex 1 of a tetra-pyridyl (py) ligand (L) has a [Pd(py)4]2+ coordination environment. Addition of coordinating anions resulted in the formation of a neutral species with Pd(py)2(anion)2 coordination environment (12A). These species bind further to the coordinating anions in the order Cl- > N3- > Br- > I- > AcO- with Ka1 : 1 ≤ 414 M-1. With relatively non-coordinating anions 1 remains intact and displays 1 : 2 binding behaviour dominated by the 1 : 1 stoichiometry in the order NO3- (∼105 M-1) » ClO4- and BF4- (∼103 M-1). As evidenced by crystal structure data, DFT calculations and {1H-19F}-HOESY NMR with BF4-, the anions are bound by charge assisted [C-H]+···anion interactions.

Hollow Li20B60 Cage: Stability and Hydrogen Storage.

Project description:A stable hollow Li20B60 cage with D2 symmetry has been identified using first-principles density functional theory studies. The results of vibrational frequency analysis and molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that this Li20B60 cage is exceptionally stable. The feasibility of functionalizing Li20B60 cage for hydrogen storage was explored theoretically. Our calculated results show that the Li20B60 molecule can adsorb a maximum of 28 hydrogen molecules. With a hydrogen uptake of 8.190 wt% and an average binding energy of 0.336 eV/H2, Li20B60 is a remarkable high-capacity storage medium.

Ti12C68: A stable T h -symmetry hollow cage.

Project description:A stable T h -symmetry Ti12C68 cage was systemically investigated using density functional theory. The structure of Ti12C68 is a hollow cage with twelve TiC13 subunit of three pentagons and one hexagon. The calculated frequencies are in the range 95.1 cm-1-1423.9 cm-1. There are no imaginary frequencies, showing its kinetic stability. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the topological structure of cage-like Ti12C68 cluster was well maintained when the effective temperature is up to 1139 K. The natural bond orbitals analysis shows that the d orbit of Ti atoms form four ? bonds with the neighboring four carbon atoms in each TiC13 subunit playing an important role in the cluster stability. The molecular frontier orbitals analysis indicates that Ti12C68 cage has a narrow HOMO-LUMO gap with metal-like property. It would be expected to enrich the species of hollow metal carbide clusters.

Ligand binding to anion-binding exosites regulates conformational properties of thrombin.

Project description:Thrombin participates in coagulation, anticoagulation, and initiation of platelet activation. To fulfill its diverse roles and maintain hemostasis, this serine protease is regulated via the extended active site region and anion-binding exosites (ABEs) I and II. For the current project, amide proton hydrogen-deuterium exchange coupled with MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry was used to characterize ligand binding to individual exosites and to investigate the presence of exosite-active site and exosite-exosite interactions. PAR3(44-56) and PAR1(49-62) were observed to bind to thrombin ABE I and then to exhibit long range effects over to ABE II. By contrast, Hirudin(54-65) focused more on ABE I and did not transmit influences over to ABE II. Although these three ligands were each directed to ABE I, they did not promote the same conformational consequences. D-Phe-Pro-Arg-chloromethyl ketone inhibition at the thrombin active site led to further local and long range consequences to thrombin-ABE I ligand complexes with the autolysis loop often most affected. When Hirudin(54-65) was bound to ABE I, it was still possible to bind GpIbα(269-286) or fibrinogen γ'(410-427) to ABE II. Each ligand exerted its predominant influences on thrombin and also allowed interexosite communication. The results obtained support the proposal that thrombin is a highly dynamic protein. The transmission of ligand-specific local and long range conformational events is proposed to help regulate this multifunctional enzyme.

Food LEGO: Building hollow cage and sheet superstructures from starch.

Project description:The idea of building large structures from small building blocks has had a long history in the human imagination, from the beautifully intricate shells assembled from silica by unicellular algae to the Egyptian pyramids built from stone. Carrying this idea into the food industry has important implications. Here, we introduce a Pickering emulsion platform for building superstructures like hollow cages and sheets using starch granules as building blocks. In food, these superstructures occupy up to six times more space than their constituent parts, thereby delivering a viscosity greater by an order of magnitude than unstructured starch. To achieve this higher viscosity, they use an alternative superstructure mechanism as opposed to the classic swelling mechanism of individual particles. These super-thickeners may reduce calories, cut production costs, and stretch the global food supply, demonstrating how we can design the future by playing with our food.

Synthesis and anion binding properties of phthalimide-containing corona[6]arenes.

Project description:Functionalized O6-corona[3]arene[3]tetrazines were synthesized efficiently and conveniently by means of a macrocyclic condensation reaction between N-functionalized 3,6-dihydroxyphthalimides and 3,6-dichlorotetrazine under mild conditions in a one-pot reaction manner. The novel macrocycles exist as a mixture of rapidly interconvertible conformers in solution while in the solid state they adopt the conformation in which three phthalimide units are cis,trans-orientated. Acting as electron-deficient macrocyclic hosts, the synthesized O6-corona[3]arene[3]tetrazines self-regulated conformational structures to complex anions in the gas phase and in the solid state owing to the anion-? noncovalent interactions between anions and the tetrazine rings.

Isolation of a Nitromethane Anion in the Calix-Shaped Inorganic Cage.

Project description:A calix-shaped polyoxometalate, [V12O32]4- (V12), stabilizes an anion moiety in its central cavity. This molecule-sized container has the potential to control the reactivity of an anion. The highly-reactive cyanate is smoothly trapped by V12 to form [V12O32(CN)]5-. In the CH3NO2 solution, cyanate abstracts protons from CH3NO2, and the resultant CH2NO2- is stabilized in V12 to form [V12O32(CH2NO2)]5- (V12(CH2NO2)). A crystallographic analysis revealed the double-bond characteristic short bond distance of 1.248 Å between the carbon and nitrogen atoms in the nitromethane anion in V12. 1H and 13C NMR studies showed that the nitromethane anion in V12 must not be exchanged with the nitromethane solvent. Thus, the V12 container restrains the reactivity of anionic species.

Anion-templated self-assembly of tetrahedral cage complexes of cobalt(II) with bridging ligands containing two bidentate pyrazolyl-pyridine binding sites.

Project description:The bridging ligands L(1) and L(2) contain two N,N-bidentate pyrazolyl-pyridine units linked to a central aromatic spacer unit (1,2-phenyl or 2,3-naphthyl, respectively). Reaction with Ni(II) salts and treatment with the anions tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate result in formation of dinuclear complexes having a 2:3 metal:ligand ratio, with one bridging and two terminal tetradentate ligands. In contrast, reaction of L(1) and L(2) with Co(II) salts, followed by treatment with tetrafluoroborate or perchlorate, results in assembly of cage complexes having a 4:6 metal:ligand ratio; these complexes have a metal ion at each corner of an approximate tetrahedron, and a bis-bidentate bridging ligand spanning each edge. The central cavity is occupied by a tetrahedral counterion that forms multiple hydrogen-bonding interactions with the methylene protons of the bridging ligands. The anionic guest fits tightly into the central cavity of the cage to which it is ideally complementary in terms of shape, size, and charge. Solution NMR experiments show that the central anion acts as a template for cage formation, with a mixture of Co(II) and the appropriate bridging ligand alone giving no assembly into a cage until the tetrahedral anion is added, at which point cage assembly is fast and quantitative. The difference between the structures of the complexes with Ni(II) and Co(II) illustrate how the uncoordinated anions can exert a profound influence on the course of the assembly process.

[C-H···anion] interactions mediate the templation and anion binding properties of topologically non-trivial metal-organic structures in aqueous solutions.

Project description:Two synthetic approaches-temperature variation and anion templation-allowed for the selective formation of a [2]catenane ([2]C4+ ) or a trefoil knot (TK6+ ), or for the enhanced formation of a Solomon link (SL8+ ), all from a simple set of starting materials (Zn(ii) acetate, diformylpyridine (DFP) and a diamino-2,2'-bipyridine (DAB)) in mixed aqueous solutions. The catenane formed exclusively at 90 °C in a 1 : 1 mixed solvent of D2O and MeOD. In the presence of bromide ion as template, TK6+ formed exclusively at 50 °C in the same solvent. In the solid state, TK6+ hosts two bromide ions in its central cavity by forming six Csp2 -H hydrogen bonds. In D2O, TK6+ , which was originally prepared as a trifluoroacetate (TFA) salt, was found to exchange two TFA counterions for two monovalent anions of different sizes and shapes, which lodged within the knot's central cavity. In contrast to bromide, the larger triflate anion (CF3SO3-) promoted the formation of SL8+ , which was characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Two dimensional heteronuclear 19F-1H-HOSEY NMR experiments detected CH···F interactions inside the cavity of SL8+ . Thus, the product distribution of this dynamic link forming system is sensitive to temperature and the size and shape of the anion template, and one of the products, TK6+ , is capable of binding a variety of monovalent anions in D2O with high affinity (with log β2 values of 4 to 6 being typical).
