New records of nudibranchs and a cephalaspid from Kuwait, northwestern Arabian Gulf (Mollusca, Heterobranchia).

ABSTRACT: In this study five new records and two probably undescribed species of heterobranch sea slugs placed in four genera, three families, and two orders are reported from Kuwait, northwestern Arabian / Persian Gulf with details and photographs. The present study increases the heterobranch diversity in Kuwaiti waters from 35 to 40 species. The range of habitats in Kuwait provides a vital opportunity for further investigation to understand the actual faunal diversity.

Peruvian nudibranchs (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Heterobranchia): an updated literature review-based list of species

Project description:Abstract Nudibranchs, as a group, have received limited attention in terms of scientific study along the coastline of Peru. Here, an updated and comprehensive list of nudibranch species found in the Peruvian sea is presented, compiled through an extensive review of relevant literature. This compilation encompasses a total of 31 species, classified into two suborders, 10 superfamilies, 20 families, and 28 genera. With respect to the biogeographic provinces along the Peruvian coast, 23 species inhabit the Warm Temperate Southeastern Pacific province, 18 species occur in the Tropical Eastern Pacific province, and 10 species are found in both provinces, crossing the transitional zone between them. In terms of distribution patterns, two species exhibit a cosmopolitan distribution (Glaucusatlanticus and Fionapinnata), while two species display a circumtropical distribution (Cephalopygetrematoides and Phylliroebucephala). One species exhibits a bipolar distribution in the Eastern Pacific and possesses an amphi-South American distribution (Rostangapulchra). Additionally, six species exhibit an amphi-South American distribution (Rostangapulchra, Diaululapunctuolata, Dotouva, Tyrinnaevelinae, Tyrinnadelicata, and Dorisfontainii), and two species are endemic to Peru (Corambemancorensis and Felimaresechurana). This study provides comprehensive information on biogeographical aspects, geographical distributions, and taxonomic updates within the nudibranch species documented in Peru. Furthermore, we discuss the status of species listed in previous literature that have not been confirmed by collections, referring to them as potentially occurring species.

<i>Portunus pelagicus</i> (Linnaeus, 1758) as a Sentinel Species to Assess Trace Metal Occurrence: A Case Study of Kuwait Waters (Northwestern Arabian Gulf).

Project description:Heavy metal pollution can adversely impact marine life, such as crabs, which can accumulate it in different organs and potentially transfer and biomagnify along the food chain in aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to examine the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) in sediment, water, and crab tissues (gills, hepatopancreas, and carapace) of the blue swimmer crab Portunus pelagicus in the coastal areas of Kuwait, northwestern Arabian Gulf. Samples were collected from Shuwaikh Port, Shuaiba Port, and Al-Khiran areas. The accumulation of metals in crabs were higher in the carapace > gill > digestive gland, and the highest metal concentration was found in crabs collected from Shuwaikh > Shuaiba > Al-Khiran. The metal concentrations in the sediments were in the order Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. Zn was the highest metal concentration detected in marine water sampled from the Al-Khiran Area, whereas the lowest metal was Cd sampled in water from the Shuwaikh Area. The results of this study validate the marine crab P. pelagicus as a relevant sentinel and prospective bioindicator for evaluating heavy metal pollution in marine ecosystems.

Assessment of Arabian Gulf Seaweeds from Kuwait as Sources of Nutritionally Important Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs).

Project description:The fatty acid (FA) compositions of ten seaweeds representative of Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta, and Ochrophyta from Kuwait in the Arabian Gulf region were determined and are discussed in the context of their potential nutritional perspectives for seaweed valorization. All the seaweeds had higher saturated fatty acid (SFA) and lower monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) contents than those typical of tropical environments. Palmitic, myristic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, α-linolenic, and stearidonic acids were the major FAs detected. Arachidonic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids were detected in minor amounts. Conserved fatty acid patterns revealed phylogenetic relationships among phyla, classes, and orders matching the molecular phylogenies at higher taxonomic ranks. Hierarchical clustering analyses clearly segregated different seaweeds (except Codium papillatum and Iyengaria stellata) into distinct groups based on their FA signatures. All but one species (Chondria sp.) had health-beneficial n6/n3 PUFAs (0.33:1-2.94:1) and atherogenic (0.80-2.52) and thrombogenic indices (0.61-5.17). However, low PUFA/SFA contents in most of the species (except Ulva spp.) may limit their utilization in the formulation of PUFA-rich functional foods. Ulva spp. had substantially high PUFAs with PUFA/SFA > 0.4, n6/n3 (0.33-0.66) and atherogenic (0.80-1.15) and thrombogenic indices (0.49-0.72), providing substantial potential for their utilization in food and feed applications.

Red Sea Opisthobranchia 6: Phyllidiidae and their paradorid mimic: new species and new records (Heterobranchia, Nudibranchia, Doridina).

Project description:With the complexity of the family Phyllidiidae and the problems of identification in the Indo-West Pacific, the story of the Red Sea species continues to unfold. One new species and one new record are added to the Red Sea fauna, both belonging to the genus Phyllidiella. Phyllidiella amphitrite sp. nov. is described from a single specimen from the northern Red Sea and clearly differs from all species of Phyllidiella in having pale yellow pigment on the tubercles. Phyllidiella zeylanica is newly recorded from the Red Sea with five specimen records and several photographed individuals; other than this, it has a western Indian Ocean distribution. Phyllidia schupporum was collected for the first time since its original description; because its distribution is now extended to the Persian Gulf, it is no longer considered endemic to the Red Sea. The distribution of the Red Sea endemic Phyllidia dautzenbergi is extended northwards to Hurghada, Egypt. A small specimen of the endemic Phyllidiopsis sinaiensis was found at 214-237 m depth just at the mouth of the Red Sea, which is a bathymetrical range extension from its previous shallow coral reef records. The identifications of other species are revisited. A new species of Paradoris is described as Paradoris hypocrita sp. nov., differing from the well-known but localised West Pacific P. liturata which also resembles a phyllidiid. This new species was recorded many years ago by published photographs, and it is relatively common in the Red Sea, evidenced by several specimens and additional photographs. It is described herein, and is considered a Red Sea endemic, differing from both the unnamed Indian Ocean species and the named Pacific species.

Red Sea Opisthobranchia 5: new species and new records of chromodorids from the Red Sea (Heterobranchia, Nudibranchia, Chromodorididae).

Project description:This is the fifth publication describing species of sea slug heterobranchs, originally based on collections from the Red Sea by the author on four expeditions carried out in 1983 and 1990, with the addition of specimens subsequently collected by underwater photographers who were stimulated by the book "Sea Slugs of the Red Sea". So much material has been amassed that only the new species and new Red Sea records of chromodorids are described in this paper, with an appendix listing specimens of previously recorded species. Three new species are described in detail and illustrated, belonging to three different genera: Doriprismatica kyanomarginatasp. n., Glossodoris kahlbrockisp. n., and Goniobranchus pseudodecorussp. n. One western Pacific species is recorded for the first time in the Red Sea, Goniobranchus collingwoodi (Rudman, 1987). The nomenclature of Verconia sudanica is discussed and stabilised.

Mobilising marine biodiversity data: a new malacological dataset of Italian records (Mollusca).

Project description:BackgroundThe location and palaeoceanographic history of the Mediterranean Sea make it a biodiversity hotspot, prompting extensive studies in this region. However, despite the marine biodiversity of this area being apparently widely studied, a large amount of distributional data for Mediterranean taxa is still unpublished or scattered in various sources and formats, causing severe limitations to their potential reuse. This emerges as a particularly thorny issue for highly biodiverse and neglected taxa, such as invertebrates. The mobilisation of these frozen data through a process of standardisation and georeferencing could potentially support biodiversity research and conservation. The aim of this work is to provide a standardised pipeline to integrate these dispersed data, focusing on the Italian waters of the Mediterranean Sea and using molluscs as target taxa. Data were gathered from two main sources: published literature and Natural History Collections. The harmonisation process involved three key steps: 1) terminology and structure standardisation; 2) taxonomy updating and 3) georeferencing. Our efforts yielded over 44000 standardised records of mollusc species from Italian seawaters. These records encompassed primary biodiversity data from newly-digitised specimens owned by 11 different institutions and private collectors, as well as secondary biodiversity data extracted from 311 published studies.New informationThis work is the first attempt to mobilise the available distributional information of Italian marine mollusc species from Natural History Collections and literature, converting the retrieved data into point-occurrence records through standard protocols, thus creating a FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) dataset collating these records from Italian marine sectors.

New provincial records of skinks (Squamata: Scincidae) from northwestern Vietnam.

Project description:We report six new records of skinks from northwestern Vietnam: Eutropis macularius, Scincelladevorator , S.monticola, S.ochracea, Sphenomorphuscryptotis and S.indicus. Our new findings increase the species number of skinks (Scincidae) to nine in Dien Bien Province and to 14 in Son La Province. We also provide additional natural history data of aforementioned species.

Molecular and morphological systematics of <i>Dolabrifera</i> Gray, 1847 (Mollusca: Gastropoda: Heterobranchia: Aplysiomorpha).

Project description:Molecular and morphological data from newly collected specimens and a review of the literature and type material indicate that the widespread tropical sea hare Dolabrifera dolabrifera is a species complex of five genetically distinct taxa. The name Dolabrifera dolabrifera is retained for a widespread species in the Indo-Pacific tropics. Dolabrifera nicaraguana is endemic to the eastern Pacific. Dolabrifera ascifera, D. virens and a new species described herein are restricted to the tropical Atlantic, with partially overlapping ranges in the Caribbean region and St. Helena. The temperate Pacific species Dolabrifera brazieri is also distinct and endemic to temperate southeastern Australia and New Zealand. These species of Dolabrifera constitute highly divergent lineages and most contain unique internal anatomical characteristics, particularly in the male reproductive morphology and shell shape, making them relatively easy to identify upon dissection. However, externally all these species are extremely variable in colour pattern and morphology and are virtually indistinguishable. This is particularly problematic for identification in the Atlantic Ocean where three species co-occur in the Caribbean region.

New species and records of limpets (Mollusca, Gastropoda) from the Pacific Costa Rica Margin.

Project description:The ocean remains a reservoir of unknown biodiversity, particularly in the deep sea. Chemosynthesis-based ecosystems, such as hydrothermal vents and hydrocarbon seeps, host unique and diverse life forms that continue to be discovered and described. The present study focuses on patelliform gastropods (limpets) collected from Pacific Costa Rica Margin hydrocarbon seeps during three research cruises from 2017 to 2019. Genetic and morphological analyses revealed the presence of several new lineages within the genera Bathyacmaea Okutani, Tsuchida & Fujikura,1992, Cocculina Dall, 1882, Paralepetopsis McLean, 1990, and the family Lepetodrilidae McLean, 1988: Bathyacmaealevinae sp. nov., Paralepetopsisvariabilis sp. nov., Pseudolepetodriluscostaricensis gen. et sp. nov., and Cocculinamethana sp. nov. These investigations also expanded the known ranges of the species Pyropeltacorymba McLean, 1992 and Lepetodrilusguaymasensis McLean, 1988 to the Costa Rica Margin. This research highlights the uniqueness of gastropod fauna at the Costa Rica Margin and contributes to our understanding of the biodiversity at chemosynthesis-based deep-sea ecosystems in the face of global biodiversity loss and increased commercial interest in deep-sea resources.
