Role of redox-inactive metals in controlling the redox potential of heterometallic manganese-oxido clusters.

ABSTRACT: Photosystem II (PSII) contains Ca²⁺, which is essential to the oxygen-evolving activity of the catalytic Mn₄CaO₅ complex. Replacement of Ca²⁺ with other redox-inactive metals results in a loss/decrease of oxygen-evolving activity. To investigate the role of Ca²⁺ in this catalytic reaction, we investigate artificial Mn₃[M]O₂ clusters redox-inactive metals [M] ([M] = Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Zn²⁺, Sr²⁺, and Y³⁺), which were synthesized by Tsui et al. (Nat Chem 5:293, 2013). The experimentally measured redox potentials (E_m) of these clusters are best described by the energy of their highest occupied molecular orbitals. Quantum chemical calculations showed that the valence of metals predominantly affects E_m(Mn^III/IV), whereas the ionic radius of metals affects E_m(Mn^III/IV) only slightly.

Redox-inactive metals modulate the reduction potential in heterometallic manganese-oxido clusters.

Project description:Redox-inactive metals are found in biological and heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts, but, at present, their roles in catalysis are not well understood. Here, we report a series of high-oxidation-state tetranuclear-dioxido clusters comprising three manganese centres and a redox-inactive metal (M). Crystallographic studies show an unprecedented Mn3M(µ4-O)(µ2-O) core that remains intact on changing M or the manganese oxidation state. Electrochemical studies reveal that the reduction potentials span a window of 700 mV and are dependent on the Lewis acidity of the second metal. With the pKa of the redox-inactive metal-aqua complex as a measure of Lewis acidity, these compounds demonstrate a linear dependence between reduction potential and acidity with a slope of ∼100 mV per pKa unit. The Sr(2+) and Ca(2+) compounds show similar potentials, an observation that correlates with the behaviour of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, which is active only if one of these two metals is present.

Reduction potentials of heterometallic manganese-oxido cubane complexes modulated by redox-inactive metals.

Project description:Understanding the effect of redox-inactive metals on the properties of biological and heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts is important both fundamentally and for improvement of future catalyst designs. In this work, heterometallic manganese-oxido cubane clusters [MMn3O4] (M = Sr(2+), Zn(2+), Sc(3+), Y(3+)) structurally relevant to the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC) of photosystem II were prepared and characterized. The reduction potentials of these clusters and other related mixed metal manganese-tetraoxido complexes are correlated with the Lewis acidity of the apical redox-inactive metal in a manner similar to a related series of heterometallic manganese-dioxido clusters. The redox potentials of the [SrMn3O4] and [CaMn3O4] clusters are close, which is consistent with the observation that the OEC is functional only with one of these two metals. Considering our previous studies of [MMn3O2] moieties, the present results with more structurally accurate models of the OEC ([MMn3O4]) suggest a general relationship between the reduction potentials of heterometallic oxido clusters and the Lewis acidities of incorporated cations that applies to diverse structural motifs. These findings support proposals that one function of calcium in the OEC is to modulate the reduction potential of the cluster to allow electron transfer.

Crystallographic studies show an unprecedented Fe3M(?4-O)(?2-OH) core that remains intact upon changing M or the oxidation state of iron. Electrochemical studies reveal that the reduction potentials (E1/2) span a window of 500 mV and depend upon the Lewis acidity of M. Using the pKa of the M-aqua complex as a measure of Lewis acidity, these compounds display a linear dependence between E1/2 and acidity, with a slope of ?70 mV per pKa unit. The current study of [Fe3MO(OH)] and previous ones of [Mn3MOn] (n = 2,4) moieties support the generality of the above relationship between the reduction potentials of heterometallic oxido clusters and the Lewis acidity of incorporated cations, as applied to clusters of different redox-active metals.

Role of Oxido Incorporation and Ligand Lability in Expanding Redox Accessibility of Structurally Related Mn4 Clusters.

Project description:Photosystem II supports four manganese centers through nine oxidation states from manganese(II) during assembly through to the most oxidized state before O2 formation and release. The protein-based carboxylate and imidazole ligands allow for significant changes of the coordination environment during the incorporation of hydroxido and oxido ligands upon oxidation of the metal centers. We report the synthesis and characterization of a series of tetramanganese complexes in four of the six oxidation states from MnII3MnIII to MnIII2 MnIV2 with the same ligand framework (L) by incorporating four oxido ligands. A 1,3,5-triarylbenzene framework appended with six pyridyl and three alkoxy groups was utilized along with three acetate anions to access tetramanganese complexes, Mn4O x , with x = 1, 2, 3, and 4. Alongside two previously reported complexes, four new clusters in various states were isolated and characterized by crystallography, and four were observed electrochemically, thus accessing the eight oxidation states from MnII4 to MnIIIMnIV3. This structurally related series of compounds was characterized by EXAFS, XANES, EPR, magnetism, and cyclic voltammetry. Similar to the ligands in the active site of the protein, the ancillary ligand (L) is preserved throughout the series and changes its binding mode between the low and high oxido-content clusters. Implications for the rational assembly and properties of high oxidation state metal-oxido clusters are presented.

Manganese-Cobalt Oxido Cubanes Relevant to Manganese-Doped Water Oxidation Catalysts.

Project description:Incorporation of Mn into an established water oxidation catalyst based on a Co(III)4O4 cubane was achieved by a simple and efficient assembly of permanganate, cobalt(II) acetate, and pyridine to form the cubane oxo cluster MnCo3O4(OAc)5py3 (OAc = acetate, py = pyridine) (1-OAc) in good yield. This allows characterization of electronic and chemical properties for a manganese center in a cobalt oxide environment, and provides a molecular model for Mn-doped cobalt oxides. The electronic properties of the cubane are readily tuned by exchange of the OAc- ligand for Cl- (1-Cl), NO3- (1-NO3), and pyridine ([1-py]+). EPR spectroscopy, SQUID magnetometry, and DFT calculations thoroughly characterized the valence assignment of the cubane as [MnIVCoIII3]. These cubanes are redox-active, and calculations reveal that the Co ions behave as the reservoir for electrons, but their redox potentials are tuned by the choice of ligand at Mn. This MnCo3O4 cubane system represents a new class of easily prepared, versatile, and redox-active oxido clusters that should contribute to an understanding of mixed-metal, Mn-containing oxides.

Exposing the role of metals in neurological disorders: a focus on manganese.

Project description:Metals are ubiquitous chemical entities involved in a myriad of biological processes. Despite their integral role in sustaining life, overexposure can lead to deleterious neurological outcomes posing a public health concern. Excess exposure to metals has been associated with aberrant neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative diseases and prominently contributes to environmental risk for neurological disorders. Here, we use manganese (Mn) to exemplify the gap in our understanding of the mechanisms behind acute metal toxicity and their relationship to chronic toxicity and disease. This challenge frustrates understanding of how individual exposure histories translate into preventing and treating brain diseases from childhood through old age. We discuss ways to enhance the predictive value of preclinical models and define mechanisms of chronic, persistent, and latent neurotoxicity.

Investigations of the effect of the non-manganese metal in heterometallic-oxido cluster models of the oxygen evolving complex of photosystem II: lanthanides as substitutes for calcium.

Project description:We report the syntheses and electrochemical properties of nine new clusters ([LLnMn(IV)3O4(OAc)3(DMF)n](+) (Ln = La(3+), Ce(3+), Nd(3+), Eu(3+), Gd(3+), Tb(3+), Dy(3+), Yb(3+), and Lu(3+), n = 2 or 3)) supported by a ligand (L(3-)) based on a 1,3,5-triarylbenzene motif appended with alkoxide and pyridine donors. All complexes were obtained by metal substitution of Ca(2+) with lanthanides upon treatment of previously reported LMn3CaO4(OAc)3(THF) with Ln(OTf)3. Structural characterization confirmed that the clusters contain the [LnMn3O4] cubane motif. The effect of the redox-inactive centers on the electronic properties of the Mn3O4 cores was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. A linear correlation between the redox potential of the cluster and the ionic radii or pKa of the lanthanide metal ion was observed. Chemical reduction of the LMn(IV)3GdO4(OAc)3(DMF)2 cluster with decamethylferrocene, resulted in the formation of LGdMn(IV)2Mn(III)O4(OAc)3(DMF)2, a rare example of mixed-valence [MMn3O4] cubane. The lanthanide-coordinated ligands can be substituted with other donors, including water, the biological substrate.

Heterometallic Ni-Pt Chini-Type Carbonyl Clusters: An Example of Molecular Random Alloy Clusters.

Project description:The direct reactions of homometallic [Ni6(CO)12]2- and [Pt6(CO)12]2- Chini carbonyl clusters result in heterometallic Ni-Pt Chini-type clusters of the general formula [Pt6-xNix(CO)12]2- (x = 0-6). Their molecular structures have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD), showing a common octahedral (staggered, D3d) structure analogous to that of [Ni6(CO)12]2-, whereas [Pt6(CO)12]2- displays a trigonal-prismatic (eclipsed, D3h) structure. This structural change after replacing one single Pt with Ni may be classified as an alloying effect, and it has been theoretically investigated by DFT methods. Spectroscopic (IR and 195Pt and 13C NMR) and ESI-MS studies indicate that mixtures of [Pt6-xNix(CO)12]2- (x = 0-6) clusters are actually present in solution, whose compositions may be varied in an almost continuous way. Thus, they may be viewed as random alloy clusters whose overall compositions depend on the stoichiometry of the reagents.

Redox-inactive ions control the redox-activity of molecular vanadium oxides.

Project description:Polyoxometalates are key materials for energy conversion and storage due to their unique chemical tunability and electrochemical reactivity. Herein, we report that functionalization of molecular vanadium oxides, polyoxovanadates, with redox-inert Ca2+ cations leads to a significant increase in their electron storage capabilities. The electrochemical performance of the Ca2+-functionalized dodecavanadate [Ca2V12O32Cl(DMF)3]2- (={Ca 2 V 12 }) was thus compared with that of the precursor compound (H2NMe2)2[V12O32Cl]3- (={V 12 }). {Ca 2 V 12 } can store up to five electrons per cluster, while {V 12 } only shows one reversible redox transition. In initial studies, we demonstrated that {Ca 2 V 12 } can be used as an active material in lithium-ion cathodes. Our results show how redox-inert cations can be used as structural and electrostatic stabilizers, leading to major changes in the redox-chemistry of polyoxovanadates.

Role of the node in controlling traffic of cadmium, zinc, and manganese in rice.

Project description:Heavy metals are transported to rice grains via the phloem. In rice nodes, the diffuse vascular bundles (DVBs), which enclose the enlarged elliptical vascular bundles (EVBs), are connected to the panicle and have a morphological feature that facilitates xylem-to-phloem transfer. To find a mechanism for restricting cadmium (Cd) transport into grains, the distribution of Cd, zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), and sulphur (S) around the vascular bundles in node I (the node beneath the panicle) of Oryza sativa 'Koshihikari' were compared 1 week after heading. Elemental maps of Cd, Zn, Mn, and S in the vascular bundles of node I were obtained by synchrotron micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and electron probe microanalysis. In addition, Cd K-edge microfocused X-ray absorption near-edge structure analyses were used to identify the elements co-ordinated with Cd. Both Cd and S were mainly distributed in the xylem of the EVB and in the parenchyma cell bridge (PCB) surrounding the EVB. Zn accumulated in the PCB, and Mn accumulated around the protoxylem of the EVB. Cd was co-ordinated mainly with S in the xylem of the EVB, but with both S and O in the phloem of the EVB and in the PCB. The EVB in the node retarded horizontal transport of Cd toward the DVB. By contrast, Zn was first stored in the PCB and then efficiently transferred toward the DVB. Our results provide evidence that transport of Cd, Zn, and Mn is differentially controlled in rice nodes, where vascular bundles are functionally interconnected.
