Evaluation of biomass pretreatment to optimize process factors for different organic acids via Box-Behnken RSM method.

ABSTRACT: Biomass, as renewable energy source, is of importance to investigate to extend the conversion yield by microorganism. Because of lignocellulosic structure, biomass must be pretreated with a process, frequently inorganic acid has to be used with a problem of hazardous byproducts. Organic acid pretreatment is an efficient alternative to be investigated. Sugar beet pulp, as an agro-industrial residue of microorganism, can be utilized by pretreatment, which is usually a costly process. Pretreatment with organic acids creates a great opportunity to convert the process into more economic and effective. Moreover, pressure conditions significantly increase the yield of biodegradable sugar content. In this study, different organic acids of maleic, fumaric, oxalic, and acetic acid pretreatment was investigated to pretreatment of sugar beet pulp, which came vast amount from factories, under pressure and non-pressure conditions via Box-Behnken method to estimate optimum point of acid ratio (1, 3, 5%), time (10, 27.5, 45 min), and solid ratio factors (3, 6.5, 10%) for highest degradation. Results were also evaluated economically. As a result of the experiments, it was observed that acetic acid gave the best result with 409.16 g/L total sugar concentration than the other organic acids. The highest TS concentration of maleic, oxalic, and fumaric acid were 97.26, 97.85, and 91.37 g/L, respectively, under pressure. According to economical evaluation, owing to lower market price and highest TS formation yield, pretreatment cost of acetic acid pretreatment was found averagely 1.51 $/gTS under pressure conditions.

Project description:The growing concern and limitations for existing lubricants have driven the need for biolubricants, extensively proposed as the most suitable and sustainable lubricating oils. Biolubricant refers to lubricants that quickly biodegrade and are non-toxic to humans and aquatic habitats. Over the last decade, there has been a significant increase in the production of biolubricants due to the rising demand for replacing petroleum-based lubricants with those derived from renewable sources like vegetable oils and lipase that are used in various applications. In this study biodiesel (FAME) produced from blending animal fats and waste cooking was used as a raw material with ethylene glycol for biolubricant production using a transesterification reaction in the presence of calcium oxide which considers the newest and novel part as there is no production of biolubricant from animal fats and waste cooking oil in previous researches. The reaction parameters of biolubricant production were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM) with the aid of Box Behnken Design (BBD) to study the effect of independent variables on the yield of biolubricant. These variables are temperature ranging from (100-150 °C), reaction time ranging from 1 to 4 h, and FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Ester) to alcohol molar ratio ranging from (2:1) to (4:1). The highest biolubricant yield is 91.56% at a temperature of 141 °C, a FAME/alcohol molar ratio of 2:1, and 3.3 h. Various analyses were performed on the produced biolubricant at the optimum conditions. The results include a pour point of -9 °C, a flash point of 192 °C, a kinematic viscosity at 40 °C of 10.35 cSt, a viscosity index of 183.6, an ash content of 0.76 wt.%, and a carbon residue of 1.5 wt.%, comparing favorably with the ISO VG 10 standard. The production process of biolubricant was simulated with Aspen Plus version 11 using a Non-Random Two-Liquid (NRTL) fluid package. The simulation results indicated that the production process can be applied on an industrial scale. Economic analysis was performed on the biolubricants production plant. The total capital investment was $12.7 M with a payback period of 1.48 years and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 67.5% indicating the suitability and profitability of the biolubricant production.

Project description:BackgroundAncient classic prescription play a crucial role in the preservation and advancement of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theories. They represent a significant milestone in the ongoing development and transmission of TCM knowledge and practices and are considered one of the breakthroughs in the development of TCM inheritance. In the process of developing ancient classic prescriptions, many problems may still arise in ensuring quality consistency between traditional methods and modern production processes, among which the extraction process poses major challenges. This paper introduces a practical approach extracting an ancient classic prescription using a modern extraction process. The technique is demonstrated through the study of the extraction process of Shenshou Taiyi powder (STP).MethodsThis study focuses on optimising the STP extraction process to ensure consistency in the quality of the product obtained through ancient and modern processes using the standard relation and fuzzy analytic hierarchical process (FAHP) and criteria importance through intercriteria correlation (CRITIC) method integrated weights combined with the Box-Behnken response surface test. Using the contents of rosmarinic acid, isoimperatorin, puerarin, as well as the extract yield and fingerprint similarity as evaluation indexes of STP, the Box-Behnken response surface method was employed to examine the varying extraction parameters, including water addition ratio, extraction duration, and number of extractions. The weighted coefficients for each parameter were calculated by combining the benchmark correlation and FAHP-CRITIC method, deriving a comprehensive score.ResultsThe optimal extraction process for STP consisted of a two extractions, each using at a tenfold quantity of water, performed for one hour. Process verification across three separate batches yielded a comprehensive score of 94.7, with a relative standard deviation of 0.76%.ConclusionsThe application of the Box-Behnken response surface method combined with standard relation and FAHP-CRITIC approach proved to be stable and feasible for optimising the extraction process of STP.
