Knowledge and Associated Factors about Rare Diseases among Dentists in Israel: A Cross Sectional Survey.

ABSTRACT: Aim: The current study aims to assess levels of knowledge among Israeli dentists about rare diseases with orofacial manifestations, and whether occupational, regional and social factors influence those levels. Materials and Methods: A total of 309 Israeli dentists participated in an online survey that provided basic demographic information pertaining to their knowledge about rare diseases, their clinical experience with rare diseases, what further information they considered necessary, and which sources of information they most frequently utilize. Results: Young age, country of dental education, practicing in both public and private settings, as well as the number of hours allocated to dental studies and the opportunity to acquire information on rare diseases with orofacial manifestations, all seem to affect the level of knowledge. Conclusions: Developments in the field of rare disease are constantly ongoing, and improvements in post-graduate dental studies about them should keep pace. The results of the current study reveal the areas upon which such curricula should focus with respect to dental practitioners.

Project description:BACKGROUND:Vaccinating children against influenza has shown both direct and indirect beneficial effects. However, despite being offered free of charge, childhood influenza vaccine coverage in Israel has been low. Our objective was to evaluate the factors associated with childhood influenza vaccination in Israel. METHODS:A cross-sectional language-specific telephone survey was conducted among adults 18 years or older, to examine childhood influenza vaccination practices and their associations with socio-demographic and relevant health variables. We further explored the reasons for these practices among parents. Multivariate logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with childhood influenza vaccine acceptance. RESULTS:Of a total of 6518 individuals contacted by mobile phone, 1165 eligible parents, ≥18 years old with children 1-18 years of age, were interviewed, and 1040 of them completed the survey successfully. Overall, factors associated with childhood influenza vaccination were younger child's age, influenza vaccination of other family members and belonging to the Arab population group. No association was found between childhood influenza vaccination and routine childhood vaccine uptake. Several of the parents' reasons for vaccine acceptance - preventing influenza or its transmission, awareness regarding the need for influenza vaccination and receipt of invitation to get vaccinated - differed significantly between Jewish and Arab parents. Several reasons reported by parents for not vaccinating children against influenza, indicated a likelihood to accept influenza vaccine outreach efforts. Such reasons were reported by 27.5% of Jewish parents and 37.5% of Arab parents. CONCLUSIONS:We found that certain demographic factors were associated with childhood influenza vaccination in Israel. Several reasons described by the parent for not vaccinating their children indicate that outreach efforts are likely to increase childhood influenza vaccination. Addressing population group-specific needs is recommended to optimize the success of influenza vaccine outreach efforts.

Project description:BackgroundDigital dentistry has revolutionized the way dental treatment is offered to patients. It became essential for dental practitioners to be well-informed about this technology to improve the quality of care offered and increase patient satisfaction. This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge, awareness, and perception of Egyptian dentists toward digital dentistry.MethodsAn online-based cross-sectional study was conducted using social media platforms from November 2022 to March 2023. Our study sample included dentists with different levels of experience, specialties, and working in different health sectors in Egypt. A questionnaire arranged in 4 sections and 23 questions was used as the study data collection tool. The data were tabulated and analyzed using SPSS software.ResultsA total of 402 participants filled out this questionnaire. 50.7% of which were females, 42.8% were between 20-29 years old and 42.3% were general practitioners. Furthermore, the main practice of 27.6% was in governmental dental clinics. Moreover, 47.3% and 64.2% of participants had Moderate knowledge and awareness respectively. While 75.9% of them had a high perception of practicing digital dentistry. Females and practitioners in governmental clinics had significantly lower awareness scores, while faculty teaching staff had significantly higher scores (P ≤ 0.05). On the other hand, practicing in the Great Cairo region and urban areas was associated with significantly higher knowledge scores (P ≤ 0.05). Similarly, Prosthodontists, periodontists, and restorative dentists had significantly higher scores when compared with general dentists (P ≤ 0.05).ConclusionsAbout half of the study participants had Moderate knowledge and awareness levels, while about three-quarters of them had a high level of perception toward practicing digital dentistry. Therefore, more attention should be given to providing dental education programs in this important field at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels by policymakers.

Project description:Background The aim of this cross-sectional survey was to apply the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to evaluate the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and endotracheal intubation skills of resident dentists for stage assessment in standardized training. Methods A total of 146 third-year resident dentists were recruited and randomly assigned to perform either CPR or endotracheal intubation. Their performance was scored by experienced anesthesiologists with standardized scoring criteria. Participants were also asked to rated their self-assessed competence, willingness, and perceptions on training status using Likert-type scales in a questionnaire. Student’s ttest was applied to compare scores for CPR and endotracheal intubation performed by resident dentists with different characteristics. The results of the questionnaires were analyzed and visualized by the R package ‘Likert’. Significance was set at the P < 0.05 level. Results The mean OSCE score for endotracheal intubation (59.1 ± 12.5) was lower than that of CPR (72.4 ± 8.8). Participants with Master’s degrees scored higher than those with Bachelor’s degrees and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees in the assessment of CPR and endotracheal intubation. Low scores of self-assessed competence and willingness were observed, especially for endotracheal intubation. Resident dentists showed poor satisfaction on training volume and frequency of CPR and endotracheal intubation. Conclusion Resident dentists showed poor performance on CPR and endotracheal intubation assessed by the OSCE. Relatively low self-assessed competence and willingness were reported in endotracheal intubation. The medical emergency curriculum for resident dentists should be more consistent and standardized to help resident dentists enhance the proficiency of life support skills. Project description:Fifteen percent of the 5000 to 8000 rare diseases (RDs) can manifest in the oral and maxillofacial region. Little attention has been paid to the care situation of people with RDs in dentistry. Hence, the aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge about RDs among dentists at a university hospital (DUs) compared to dentists with different professional backgrounds and among general dentists, specialist dentists and DUs in the chamber district of Westfalen-Lippe. Moreover, self-assessment of the level of knowledge was evaluated. A questionnaire was designed, which was made available digitally via a link. A random sample of 1500 dentists, specialist dentists, and oral- and craniomaxillofacial surgeons from the membership of the Dental Association of Westfalen-Lippe, and all dentists, specialist dentists, and oral- and craniomaxillofacial surgeons working at the University Dental Hospitals Münster and Witten/Herdecke, were invited to participate to our study. Differences in the level of knowledge between DUs and non-DUs and differences between DUs, general dentists, and specialist dentists were tested via two-sided Fischer's exact tests. Differences between the three groups of self-assessment of the level of knowledge and the self-assessment of how sufficient their own knowledge about RDs is were tested via two-sided Kruskal-Wallis tests. The global level of significance was controlled by the Bonferroni method. A total of 267 questionnaires were completed, of which 64.0% were answered by general dentists, 25.5% by specialist dentists and 10.5% by DUs. DUs had a significant higher level of knowledge about RDs (adjusted p = 0.012) compared to non-DUs and achieved higher scores (median = 16.5 points) than general (median = 13 points) and specialist dentists (median = 13 points) (p = 0.001). In the self-assessments, the differences were not significant (p > 0.05). In conclusion, most participants showed no or little knowledge about RDs, and DUs had a significant higher level of knowledge than non-university dentists.
