Changes in Domestic Energy and Water Usage during the UK COVID-19 Lockdown Using High-Resolution Temporal Data.

ABSTRACT: In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the UK Government provided public health advice to stay at home from 16 March 2020, followed by instruction to stay at home (full lockdown) from 24 March 2020. We use data with high temporal resolution from utility sensors installed in 280 homes across social housing in Cornwall, UK, to test for changes in domestic electricity, gas and water usage in response to government guidance. Gas usage increased by 20% following advice to stay at home, the week before full lockdown, although no difference was seen during full lockdown itself. During full lockdown, morning electricity usage shifted to later in the day, decreasing at 6 a.m. and increasing at midday. These changes in energy were echoed in water usage, with a 17% increase and a one-hour delay in peak morning usage. Changes were consistent with people getting up later, spending more time at home and washing more during full lockdown. Evidence for these changes was also observed in later lockdowns, but not between lockdowns. Our findings suggest more compliance with an enforced stay-at-home message than with advice. We discuss implications for socioeconomically disadvantaged households given the indication of inability to achieve increased energy needs during the pandemic.

Project description:BackgroundQuantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA), a modelling approach, is used to assess health risks. Inputs into the QMRA process include data that characterise the intensity, frequency and duration of exposure to risk(s). Data gaps for water exposure assessment include the duration and frequency of urban non-potable (non-drinking) water use. The primary objective of this study was to compare household water usage results obtained using two data collection tools, a computer assisted telephone interview (CATI) and a 7-day water activity diary, in order to assess the effect of different methodological survey approaches on derived exposure estimates. Costs and logistical aspects of each data collection tool were also examined.MethodsA total of 232 households in an Australian dual reticulation scheme (where households are supplied with two grades of water through separate pipe networks) were surveyed about their water usage using both a CATI and a 7-day diary. Householders were questioned about their use of recycled water for toilet flushing, garden watering and other outdoor activities. Householders were also questioned about their water use in the laundry. Agreement between reported CATI and diary water usage responses was assessed.ResultsResults of this study showed that the level of agreement between CATI and diary responses was greater for more frequent water-related activities except toilet flushing and for those activities where standard durations or settings were employed. In addition, this study showed that the unit cost of diary administration was greater than for the CATI, excluding consideration of the initial selection and recruitment steps.ConclusionThis study showed that it is possible to successfully 'remotely' coordinate diary completion providing that adequate instructions are given and that diary recording forms are well designed. In addition, good diary return rates can be achieved using a monetary incentive and the diary format allows for collective recording, rather than an individual's estimation, of household water usage. Accordingly, there is merit in further exploring the use of diaries for collection of water usage information either in combination with a mail out for recruitment, or potentially in the future with Internet-based recruitment (as household Internet uptake increases).

Project description:BackgroundEczema is a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Domestic water with high mineral content (hard water) is a risk factor for eczema in children, but this association has not been assessed in adults.ObjectivesTo examine the association between domestic hard water supply and eczema prevalence and incidence in adults aged 40-69 years and the contextual effect in eczema outcomes by postcode in adults in the UK.MethodsWe used data from the UK Biobank study collected in 2006-10 (baseline) and 2013-14 (follow-up). Eczema prevalence at baseline (2006-10) and at follow-up (2013-14) and incidence (new onset between baseline and follow-up) were determined from the touchscreen questionnaires and nurse-led interviews. Domestic hard water information was obtained in 2005 and 2013 from the local water supply companies in England, Wales and Scotland as CaCO3 concentrations. We fitted multilevel logistic regression models with random intercepts for postcode areas to examine the effect of domestic hard water on eczema outcomes, and we measured components of variance.ResultsIn total, 306 531 participants with a mean age of 57 years nested across 7642 postcodes were included in the baseline analysis, and 31 036 participants nested across 3695 postcodes were included in the follow-up analysis. We observed an increase in the odds of eczema at baseline [odds ratio (OR) 1·02, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·01-1·04] per 50 mg L-1 of CaCO3 increase. Furthermore, exposure to domestic hard water (> 200 mg L-1 of CaCO3 ) was associated with increased odds of prevalent eczema at baseline (OR 1·12, 95% CI 1·04-1·22). Moreover, there was a significant linear trend (P < 0·001) in which increasing levels of hard water increased eczema prevalence risk. No association was observed with incident eczema or eczema at follow-up. The intraclass correlation coefficient for postcode was 1·6% (95% CI 0·7-3·4), which remained unexplained by area-level socioeconomic measures.ConclusionsIncreasing levels of domestic hard water, as measured by CaCO3 concentrations, were associated with an increased prevalence of eczema in adults but not increased incidence. Ongoing efforts to reduce hard water exposure may have a beneficial effect in reducing the burden of eczema in adults. Further research is needed to explore area-level factors that may lead to eczema. What is already known about this topic? Hard water is formed when minerals are dissolved in water from filtration through sedimentary rocks. Several studies have reported a higher prevalence of eczema in areas with hard water. However, all studies on this topic have assessed this in infants and school-aged children, while this association has not been explored in adults. What does this study add? Our findings suggest that exposure to higher concentrations of domestic hard water is associated with an increase in eczema prevalence in adults aged 40-69 years. Ongoing efforts to reduce hard water exposure may have a beneficial effect in reducing eczema prevalence in adults.

Project description:BackgroundAccumulating evidence suggests that domestic water hardness is linked to health outcomes, but its association to all-cause and cause-specific cancers warrants investigation.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to investigate the association of domestic hard water with all-cause and cause-specific cancers.MethodsIn the prospective cohort study, a total of 447,996 participants from UK Biobank who were free of cancer at baseline were included and followed up for 16 y. All-cause and 22 common cause-specific cancer diagnoses were ascertained using hospital inpatient records and self-reported data until 30 November 2022. Domestic water hardness, measured by CaCO3 concentrations, was obtained from the local water supply companies across England, Scotland, and Wales in 2005. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard models, with adjustments for known measured confounders, including demographic, socioeconomic, clinical, biochemical, lifestyle, and environmental factors.ResultsOver a median follow-up of 13.6 y (range: 12.7-14.4 y), 58,028 all-cause cancer events were documented. A U-shaped relationship between domestic water hardness and all-cause cancers was observed (p for nonlinearity <0.001). In comparison with individuals exposed to soft water (0-60mg/L), the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of all-cause cancer were 1.00 (95% CI: 0.98, 1.02) for those exposed to moderate hard water (>60-120mg/L), 0.88 (95% CI: 0.84, 0.91) for those exposed to hard water (>120-180mg/L) and 1.06 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.08) for those exposed to very hard water (>180mg/L). Additionally, domestic water hardness was associated with 11 of 22 cause-specific cancers, including cancers of the esophagus, stomach, colorectal tract, lung, breast, prostate, and bladder, as well as non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, malignant melanoma, and hematological malignancies. Moreover, we observed a positive linear relationship between water hardness and bladder cancer.DiscussionOur findings suggest that domestic water hardness was associated with all-cause and multiple cause-specific cancers. Findings from the UK Biobank support a potentially beneficial association between hard water and the incidence of all-cause cancer.
