The pnictogen bond: a quantitative molecular orbital picture.

ABSTRACT: We have analyzed the structure and stability of archetypal pnictogen-bonded model complexes D3PnA- (Pn = N, P, As, Sb; D, A = F, Cl, Br) using state-of-the-art relativistic density functional calculations at the ZORA-M06/QZ4P level. We have accomplished two tasks: (i) to compute accurate trends in pnictogen-bond strength based on a set of consistent data; and (ii) to rationalize these trends in terms of detailed analyses of the bonding mechanism based on quantitative Kohn-Sham molecular orbital (KS-MO) theory in combination with a canonical energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and Voronoi deformation density (VDD) analyses of the charge distribution. We have found that pnictogen bonds have a significant covalent character stemming from strong HOMO-LUMO interactions between the lone pair of A- and σ* of D3Pn. As such, the underlying mechanism of the pnictogen bond is similar to that of hydrogen, halogen, and chalcogen bonds.

Project description:We have quantum chemically analyzed the structure and stability of archetypal chalcogen-bonded model complexes D2 Ch⋅⋅⋅A- (Ch = O, S, Se, Te; D, A = F, Cl, Br) using relativistic density functional theory at ZORA-M06/QZ4P. Our purpose is twofold: (i) to compute accurate trends in chalcogen-bond strength based on a set of consistent data; and (ii) to rationalize these trends in terms of detailed analyses of the bonding mechanism based on quantitative Kohn-Sham molecular orbital (KS-MO) theory in combination with a canonical energy decomposition analysis (EDA). At odds with the commonly accepted view of chalcogen bonding as a predominantly electrostatic phenomenon, we find that chalcogen bonds, just as hydrogen and halogen bonds, have a significant covalent character stemming from strong HOMO-LUMO interactions. Besides providing significantly to the bond strength, these orbital interactions are also manifested by the structural distortions they induce as well as the associated charge transfer from A- to D2 Ch.

The Stibium Bond or the Antimony-Centered Pnictogen Bond: The Covalently Bound Antimony Atom in Molecular Entities in Crystal Lattices as a Pnictogen Bond Donor.

Project description:A stibium bond, i.e., a non-covalent interaction formed by covalently or coordinately bound antimony, occurs in chemical systems when there is evidence of a net attractive interaction between the electrophilic region associated with an antimony atom and a nucleophile in another, or the same molecular entity. This is a pnictogen bond and are likely formed by the elements of the pnictogen family, Group 15, of the periodic table, and is an inter- or intra-molecular non-covalent interaction. This overview describes a set of illustrative crystal systems that were stabilized (at least partially) by means of stibium bonds, together with other non-covalent interactions (such as hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds), retrieved from either the Cambridge Structure Database (CSD) or the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). We demonstrate that these databases contain hundreds of crystal structures of various dimensions in which covalently or coordinately bound antimony atoms in molecular entities feature positive sites that productively interact with various Lewis bases containing O, N, F, Cl, Br, and I atoms in the same or different molecular entities, leading to the formation of stibium bonds, and hence, being partially responsible for the stability of the crystals. The geometric features, pro-molecular charge density isosurface topologies, and extrema of the molecular electrostatic potential model were collectively examined in some instances to illustrate the presence of Sb-centered pnictogen bonding in the representative crystal systems considered.

Nature of the Ru-NO Coordination Bond: Kohn-Sham Molecular Orbital and Energy Decomposition Analysis.

Project description:We have analyzed structure, stability, and Ru-NO bonding of the trans-[RuCl(NO)(NH3)4]2+ complex by using relativistic density functional theory. First, we focus on the bond dissociation energies associated with the three canonical dissociation modes leading to [RuCl(NH3)4]++NO+, [RuCl(NH3)4]2++NO, and [RuCl(NH3)4]3++NO-. The main objective is to understand the Ru-NO+ bonding mechanism in the conceptual framework of Kohn-Sham molecular orbital theory in combination with a quantitative energy decomposition analysis. In our analyses, we have addressed the importance of the synergism between Ru-NO+ σ-donation and π-backdonation as well as the so-called negative trans influence of the Cl- ligand on the Ru-NO bond. For completeness, the Ru-NO+ bonding mechanism is compared with that of the corresponding Ru-CO bond.

Weak Pnictogen Bond with Bismuth: Experimental Evidence Based on Bi-P Through-Space Coupling.

Project description:To study pnictogen bonding involving bismuth, flexible accordion-like molecular complexes of the composition [P(C6 H4 -o-CH2 SCH3 )3 BiX3 ], (X=Cl, Br, I) have been synthesised and characterised. The strength of the weak and mainly electrostatic interaction between the Bi and P centres strongly depends on the character of the halogen substituent on bismuth, which is confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, DFT and ab initio computations. Significantly, 209 Bi-31 P through-space coupling (J=2560 Hz) is observed in solid-state 31 P NMR spectra, which is so far unprecedented in the literature, delivering direct information on the magnitude of this pnictogen interaction.

Beyond the Classical Electron-Sharing and Dative Bond Picture: Case of the Spin-Polarized Bond.

Project description:Chemical bonds are traditionally assigned as electron-sharing or donor-acceptor/dative. External criteria such as the nature of the dissociation process, energy partitioning schemes, or quantum chemical topology are invoked to assess the bonding situation. However, for systems with marked multi-reference character, this binary categorization might not be precise enough to render the bonding properties. A third scenario can be foreseen: spin polarized bonds. To illustrate this, the case of a NaBH3 - cluster is presented. According to the analysis NaBH3 - exhibits a strong diradical character and cannot be classified as either electron-sharing or a dative bond. Elaborated upon are the common problems of popular bonding descriptions. Additionally, a simple model, based on the bond order and local spin indicators, which discriminates between all three bonding situations, is provided.

Correlations between Density-Based Bond Orders and Orbital-Based Bond Energies for Chemical Bonding Analysis.

Project description:Quantum chemistry-based codes and methods provide valuable computational tools to estimate reaction energetics and elucidate reaction mechanisms. Electronic structure methods allow directly studying the chemical transformations in molecular systems involving breaking and making of chemical bonds and the associated changes in the electronic structure. The link between the electronic structure and chemical bonding can be provided through the crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) analysis that allows quantifying the bond strength by computing Hamilton-weighted populations of localized atomic orbitals. Another important parameter reflecting the nature and strength of a chemical bond is the bond order that can be assessed by the density derived electrostatic and chemical (DDEC6) method which relies on an electron and spin density-partitioning scheme. Herein, we describe a linear correlation that can be established between the DDEC6-derived bond orders and the bond strengths computed with the COHP formalism. We demonstrate that within defined boundaries, the COHP-derived bond strengths can be consistently compared among each other and linked to the DDEC6-derived bond orders independent of the used model. The validity of these correlations and the effective model independence of the electronic descriptors are demonstrated for a variety of gas-phase chemical systems, featuring different types of chemical bonds. Furthermore, the applicability of the derived correlations to the description of complex reaction paths in periodic systems is demonstrated by considering the zeolite-catalyzed Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between 2,5-dimethylfuran and ethylene.

Steric Selection of Anion Binding Sites by Organoantimony(V) Pnictogen Bond Donors: An Experimental and Computational Study.

Project description:Catecholatostiboranes have emerged as useful Lewis acids in several applications. To better understand the factors that control the properties of these species, we examined the Lewis acidities of (o-C6Cl4O2)Sb(o-Tol)3 (2, Tol = tolyl) and (o-C6Cl4O2)Sb(p-Tol)3 (3), two triarylcatecholatostiboranes that differ by the nature of the aryl substituent. Fluoride anion binding studies indicate that 3 is more Lewis acidic than 2, a factor readily assigned to the steric crowding around antimony in the case of the o-tolyl derivative. But, while 3 binds F- trans to a Sb-Caryl bond as is typical of catecholatostiboranes, 2 prefers binding trans to a Sb-O bond. Computational analyses of 2 and 3 reveal the existence of several σ holes, and an activation strain analysis is employed to elucidate the origin of these stiboranes' anion-binding geometry preferences.

Scrutinizing formally Ni<sup>IV</sup> centers through the lenses of core spectroscopy, molecular orbital theory, and valence bond theory.

Project description:Nickel K- and L2,3-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) are discussed for 16 complexes and complex ions with nickel centers spanning a range of formal oxidation states from II to IV. K-edge XAS alone is shown to be an ambiguous metric of physical oxidation state for these Ni complexes. Meanwhile, L2,3-edge XAS reveals that the physical d-counts of the formally NiIV compounds measured lie well above the d6 count implied by the oxidation state formalism. The generality of this phenomenon is explored computationally by scrutinizing 8 additional complexes. The extreme case of NiF62- is considered using high-level molecular orbital approaches as well as advanced valence bond methods. The emergent electronic structure picture reveals that even highly electronegative F-donors are incapable of supporting a physical d6 NiIV center. The reactivity of NiIV complexes is then discussed, highlighting the dominant role of the ligands in this chemistry over that of the metal centers.

Bond-Orbital-Resolved Piezoelectricity in Sp<sup>2</sup>-Hybridized Monolayer Semiconductors.

Project description:Sp2-hybridized monolayer semiconductors (e.g., planar group III-V and IV-IV binary compounds) with inversion symmetry breaking (ISB) display piezoelectricity governed by their σ- and π-bond electrons. Here, we studied their bond-orbital-resolved electronic piezoelectricity (i.e., the σ- and π-piezoelectricity). We formulated a tight-binding piezoelectric model to reveal the different variations of σ- and π-piezoelectricity with the ISB strength (Δ). As Δ varied from positive to negative, the former decreased continuously, but the latter increased piecewise and jumped at Δ=0 due to the criticality of the π-electrons' ground-state geometry near this quantum phase-transition point. This led to a piezoelectricity predominated by the π-electrons for a small |Δ|. By constructing an analytical model, we clarified the microscopic mechanisms underlying the anomalous π-piezoelectricity and its subtle relations with the valley Hall effect. The validation of our models was justified by applying them to the typical sp2 monolayers including hexagonal silicon carbide, Boron-X (X = N, P, As, Ab), and a BN-doped graphene superlattice.

Pnictogen-based vanadacyclobutadiene complexes.

Project description:The reactivity of the V[triple bond, length as m-dash]C t Bu multiple bonds in the complex (dBDI)V[triple bond, length as m-dash]C t Bu(OEt2) (C) (dBDI2- = ArNC(CH3)CHC(CH2)NAr, Ar = 2,6- i Pr2C6H3) with unsaturated substrates such as N[triple bond, length as m-dash]CR (R = Ad or Ph) and P[triple bond, length as m-dash]CAd leads to the formation of rare 3d transition metal compounds featuring α-aza-vanadacyclobutadiene, (dBDI)V(κ2- C , N - t BuCC(R)N) (R = Ad, 1; R = Ph, 2) and β-phospha-vanadacyclobutadiene moieties, (dBDI)V(κ2- C , C - t BuCPCAd) (3). Complexes 1-3 are characterized using multinuclear and multidimensional NMR spectroscopy, including the preparation of the 50% 15N-enriched isotopologue (dBDI)V(κ2- C , N - t BuCC(Ad)15N) (1-15N). Solid-state structural analysis is used to determine the dominant resonance structures of these unique pnictogen-based vanadacyclobutadienes. A systematic comparison with the known vanadacyclobutadiene (dBDI)V(κ2- C , C - t BuCC(H)C t Bu) (4) is also presented. Theoretical investigations into the electronic structure of 2-4 highlight the crucial role of unique V-heteroatom interactions in stabilizing the vanadacyclobutadienes and identify the most dominant resonance structures.
