Adequate Iodine Intake among Young Adults in Jiangsu Province, China Despite a Medium Iodine Knowledge Score.

ABSTRACT: Lack of iodine knowledge might be a risk factor for inadequate iodine intake in populations. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between iodine knowledge and intake in young Chinese adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted in Suzhou, China. Iodine intake was assessed using a validated 33-item iodine-specific Chinese food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and iodine knowledge was determined using a Chinese iodine knowledge questionnaire. A total of 150 participants (mean age 20.3 years) completed the study. The median iodine intake plus iodized salt was 260 μg/d, indicating iodine sufficiency (>150 µg/d). The median iodine knowledge score was 16/24, suggesting a medium level of knowledge. The majority of participants correctly recognized fish and seafood (95%) and iodized salt (83%) as the most important dietary iodine sources. After adjusting for age and sex, studying in the science cluster and having received iodine education were the predictors of having a higher iodine knowledge score, with adjusted odd ratios (OR) of 4.33 (1.49, 12.61) and 2.73 (1.21, 6.14), respectively. In conclusion, young Chinese adults had an adequate iodine intake despite a medium iodine knowledge score. This study provides support that iodine fortification in China has been successful, but further research is required to more fully substantiate this finding.

Project description:Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) with regard to digital dental technologies among dentists in Jiangsu province. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study enrolled dentists in Jiangsu province during June, 2023. A web-based questionnaire was used to collect the demographic characteristics of the participants and KAP regarding digital dental technologies. The structural equation model (SEM) was used to analyze the associations between KAP dimensions. Results: A total of 284 questionnaires were collected, of which 212 (74.65%) were valid, and 108 (50.94%) of the participants were male. Their knowledge, attitude, and practice scores were 14.33 ± 3.59 (possible range: 0-19), 26.17 ± 3.40 (possible range: 8-40), and 10.73 ± 3.11 (possible range: 4-16), respectively, indicating sufficient knowledge, a positive attitude, and proactive practice. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) was the most well-understood digital dental technology among the dentists (205, 96.70%), followed by intraoral scanning/models and digital impression scanning/facial scanning (198, 93.40%), computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) (177, 83.49%), three-dimensional printing (175, 82.55%), and surgical guides (175, 82.55%). CBCT was the most frequently used technique (90.09%), followed by intraoral scanning (72.17%), impression scanning (54.25%), and CAD/CAM (42.45%). The SEM showed that knowledge had a direct effect on attitude (β = 0.283, p < 0.001), and attitude had a direct effect on practice (β = 0.280, p < 0.001), demonstrating that knowledge had an indirect effect on practice. Knowledge also had a direct effect on practice (β = 0.310, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Dentists in Jiangsu province had sufficient knowledge, a positive attitude, and proactive practice with regard to digital dental technologies. However, policies should encourage dentists to integrate digital technologies into their practice by establishing sufficient understanding and positive attitudes.

Project description:BackgroundWeight management is an effective prevention and treatment strategy for diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of diabetic patients towards weight management.MethodsDiabetic patients treated at Qidong City, Jiangsu Province, between January 2023 and June 2023 were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-designed questionnaire was used to collect their demographic characteristics and KAP toward weight management. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to examine the inter-relationships among KAP scores.ResultsAmong a total of 503 valid questionnaires that were collected, 55.07% were filled out by men and 54.67% by those aged < 60 years. The mean scores for knowledge, attitude, and practice were 8.03 ± 3.525 (possible range: 0-13), 31.88 ± 3.524 (possible range: 10-50), and 22.24 ± 3.318 (possible range: 9-45), respectively. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed the knowledge was positively associated with attitude (r = 0.295, P < 0.001) and practice (r = 0.131, P < 0.001), and attitude was positively associated with practice (r = 0.140, P = 0.002). SEM demonstrated positive associations between knowledge and attitude (β = 0.28, P < 0.001), and attitude and practice (β = 0.09, P = 0.019). Moreover, older age was negatively associated with knowledge (β=-0.04, P = 0.001), while higher education (β = 1.220, P < 0.001), increased monthly income (β = 0.779, P < 0.001), diagnosis of fatty liver (β = 1.03, P = 0.002), and screening for excess visceral fat (β = 1.11, P = 0.002) were positively associated with knowledge.ConclusionDiabetic patients showed moderate knowledge, neutral attitudes, and inappropriate practices toward weight management. Knowledge was positively associated with attitude and practice. These findings provided valuable directions for healthcare interventions targeting improved KAP status of weight management among diabetic patients.

Project description:IntroductionIodine is one of the crucial micronutrients required for the normal growth of humans from the fetal stage to adulthood through the synthesis of thyroxin (t3) and triiodothyronine (t4) hormones in the thyroid gland for regulation of metabolism, protein synthesis, and brain development. This study aimed to assess iodine status, the impact of knowledge and practice for adequate iodized salt utilization in household levels in North West Ethiopia.MethodA population-based cross-sectional study was carried out using multistage sampling among 1398 residents from 28 December 2021 to 30 January 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study participants. The collected data were entered into Epi-Data version 3.1 and then exported to STATA/R version 14 for further analysis. An adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was used to declare statistical significance at p < 0.05.ResultThe overall mean (±SD) age of participants was 34.9 (±12.8) years. About 678 (48.5%) had 15-80 ppm, 23 (1.6%) had >80 ppm, 533 (38.13%) had 1.1 ppm to 14.9 ppm, and 147 (10.5) had no iodine in salt (0 ppm) after assessed by Rapid Test Kit. Only 48.5% of the sampled household had used adequate iodized salt with ≥15 ppm. The overall burden of goiter was estimated at 11.4/1000 population. Adequate iodized salt utilization was significantly associated with having formal education (adjusted odds ratio = 1.89: 95% confidence interval: 1.4, 2.6, p = 0.001), monthly income ≥5000 ETB/month (adjusted odds ratio = 1.99: 95% confidence interval: 1.5, 2.9, p = 0.001), and good knowledge score (adjusted odds ratio = 1.6: 95% confidence interval: 1.12, 2.6, p = 0.03) were predictors for proper iodized salt utilization.ConclusionCoverage of adequately iodized salt was low and respondents' formal education, monthly income ≥5000 Ethiopian Birr/month, and good knowledge score were all significantly associated with proper iodized salt utilization. While the prevalence of goiter was not significantly identified as a public health problem as compared in the regions, however, in light of previous iodine deficiency in this region of Ethiopia, the salt iodization program should be done continually.
