Locality and entanglement of indistinguishable particles.

ABSTRACT: Entanglement is one of the strongest quantum correlation, and is a key ingredient in fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics and a resource for quantum technologies. While entanglement theory is well settled for distinguishable particles, there are five inequivalent approaches to entanglement of indistinguishable particles. We analyse the different definitions of indistinguishable particle entanglement in the light of the locality notion. This notion is specified by two steps: (i) the identification of subsystems by means of their local operators; (ii) the requirement that entanglement represent correlations between the above subsets of operators. We prove that three of the aforementioned five entanglement definitions are incompatible with any locality notion defined as above.

Entanglement monogamy in indistinguishable particle systems.

Project description:Recently, it has been realized that indistinguishability is a resource for quantum information processing. A new method to represent the indistinguishable particles by Franco et al. (Sci Rep 6:20603, 2016, https://doi.org/10.1038/srep20603 ) and measure the concurrence is developed by Nosrati et al. (npj Quantum Inf 6:39, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41534-020-0271-7 ). The monogamy property says that quantum entanglement cannot be shared freely between more than two particles. For three distinguishable particles, the monogamy of entanglement was first expressed as an inequality using squared concurrence where each particle has a single degree of freedom (for pure or mixed states). Using multiple degrees of freedom, similar inequality was shown to be held between two distinguishable particles. However, for two indistinguishable particles, where each particle cannot be addressed individually, the monogamy inequality was shown to be violated maximally for a specific state. Thus a question naturally arises: what happens to the monogamy of entanglement in the case of three or more indistinguishable particles? We prove that monogamy holds in this scenario and the inequality becomes equality for all pure indistinguishable states. Further, we provide three major operational meanings of our result. Finally, we present an experimental schematic using photons to observe our result.

Asymptotic Gaussian law for noninteracting indistinguishable particles in random networks.

Project description:For N indistinguishable bosons or fermions impinged on a M-port Haar-random unitary network the average probability to count n 1, … n r particles in a small number r ≪ N of binned-together output ports takes a Gaussian form as N ≫ 1. The discovered Gaussian asymptotic law is the well-known asymptotic law for distinguishable particles, governed by a multinomial distribution, modified by the quantum statistics with stronger effect for greater particle density N/M. Furthermore, it is shown that the same Gaussian law is the asymptotic form of the probability to count particles at the output bins of a fixed multiport with the averaging performed over all possible configurations of the particles in the input ports. In the limit N → ∞, the average counting probability for indistinguishable bosons, fermions, and distinguishable particles differs only at a non-vanishing particle density N/M and only for a singular binning K/M → 1, where K output ports belong to a single bin.

Entanglement-Based Thermoplastic Shape Memory Polymeric Particles with Photothermal Actuation for Biomedical Applications.

Project description:Triggering shape-memory functionality under clinical hyperthermia temperatures could enable the control and actuation of shape-memory systems in clinical practice. For this purpose, we developed light-inducible shape-memory microparticles composed of a poly(d,l-lactic acid) (PDLLA) matrix encapsulating gold nanoparticles (Au@PDLLA hybrid microparticles). This shape-memory polymeric system for the first time demonstrates the capability of maintaining an anisotropic shape at body temperature with triggered shape-memory effect back to a spherical shape at a narrow temperature range above body temperature with a proper shape recovery speed (37 < T < 45 °C). We applied a modified film-stretching processing method with carefully controlled stretching temperature to enable shape memory and anisotropy in these micron-sized particles. Accordingly, we achieved purely entanglement-based shape-memory response without chemical cross-links in the miniaturized shape-memory system. Furthermore, these shape-memory microparticles exhibited light-induced spatiotemporal control of their shape recovery using a laser to trigger the photothermal heating of doped gold nanoparticles. This shape-memory system is composed of biocompatible components and exhibits spatiotemporal controllability of its properties, demonstrating a potential for various biomedical applications, such as tuning macrophage phagocytosis as demonstrated in this study.

Demonstrating quantum contextuality of indistinguishable particles by a single family of noncontextuality inequalities.

Project description:Quantum theory has the intriguing feature that is inconsistent with noncontextual hidden variable models, for which the outcome of a measurement does not depend on which other compatible measurements are being performed concurrently. While various proofs of such contextual behavior of quantum systems have been established, relatively little is known concerning the possibility to demonstrate this intriguing feature for indistinguishable particles. Here, we show in a simple and systematic manner that with projective measurements alone, it is possible to demonstrate quantum contextuality for such systems of arbitrary Hilbert space dimensions, including those corresponding to a qubit. Our demonstration is applicable to a single fermion as well as multiple fermions, and thus also a composite boson formed from an even number of fermions. In addition, our approach gives a clear demonstration of the intimate connection between complementarity and contextuality, two seemingly unrelated aspects of quantum theory.

Quantum entanglement of identical particles by standard information-theoretic notions.

Project description:Quantum entanglement of identical particles is essential in quantum information theory. Yet, its correct determination remains an open issue hindering the general understanding and exploitation of many-particle systems. Operator-based methods have been developed that attempt to overcome the issue. Here we introduce a state-based method which, as second quantization, does not label identical particles and presents conceptual and technical advances compared to the previous ones. It establishes the quantitative role played by arbitrary wave function overlaps, local measurements and particle nature (bosons or fermions) in assessing entanglement by notions commonly used in quantum information theory for distinguishable particles, like partial trace. Our approach furthermore shows that bringing identical particles into the same spatial location functions as an entangling gate, providing fundamental theoretical support to recent experimental observations with ultracold atoms. These results pave the way to set and interpret experiments for utilizing quantum correlations in realistic scenarios where overlap of particles can count, as in Bose-Einstein condensates, quantum dots and biological molecular aggregates.

Wrapping Up Hydrophobic Hydration: Locality Matters.

Project description:Water, being the universal solvent, acts as a competing agent in fundamental processes, such as folding, aggregation or biomolecular recognition. A molecular understanding of hydrophobic hydration is of central importance to understanding the subtle free energy differences, which dictate function. Ab initio and classical molecular dynamics simulations yield two distinct hydration water populations in the hydration shell of solvated tert-butanol noted as "HB-wrap" and "HB-hydration2bulk". The experimentally observed hydration water spectrum can be dissected into two modes, centered at 164 and 195 cm-1. By comparison to the simulations, these two bands are attributed to the "HB-wrap" and "HB-hydration2bulk" populations, respectively. We derive a quantitative correlation between the population in each of these two local water coordination motifs and the temperature dependence of the solvation entropy. The crossover from entropy to enthalpy dominated solvation at elevated temperatures, as predicted by theory and observed experimentally, can be rationalized in terms of the distinct temperature stability and thermodynamic signatures of "HB-wrap" and "HB-hydration2bulk".

High-dimensional entanglement certification.

Project description:Quantum entanglement is the ability of joint quantum systems to possess global properties (correlation among systems) even when subsystems have no definite individual property. Whilst the 2-dimensional (qubit) case is well-understood, currently, tools to characterise entanglement in high dimensions are limited. We experimentally demonstrate a new procedure for entanglement certification that is suitable for large systems, based entirely on information-theoretics. It scales more efficiently than Bell's inequality and entanglement witness. The method we developed works for arbitrarily large system dimension d and employs only two local measurements of complementary properties. This procedure can also certify whether the system is maximally entangled. We illustrate the protocol for families of bipartite states of qudits with dimension up to 32 composed of polarisation-entangled photon pairs.

Active temporal multiplexing of indistinguishable heralded single photons.

Project description:It is a fundamental challenge in quantum optics to deterministically generate indistinguishable single photons through non-deterministic nonlinear optical processes, due to the intrinsic coupling of single- and multi-photon-generation probabilities in these processes. Actively multiplexing photons generated in many temporal modes can decouple these probabilities, but key issues are to minimize resource requirements to allow scalability, and to ensure indistinguishability of the generated photons. Here we demonstrate the multiplexing of photons from four temporal modes solely using fibre-integrated optics and off-the-shelf electronic components. We show a 100% enhancement to the single-photon output probability without introducing additional multi-photon noise. Photon indistinguishability is confirmed by a fourfold Hong-Ou-Mandel quantum interference with a 91 ± 16% visibility after subtracting multi-photon noise due to high pump power. Our demonstration paves the way for scalable multiplexing of many non-deterministic photon sources to a single near-deterministic source, which will be of benefit to future quantum photonic technologies.

Reconstructible phylogenetic networks: do not distinguish the indistinguishable.

Project description:Phylogenetic networks represent the evolution of organisms that have undergone reticulate events, such as recombination, hybrid speciation or lateral gene transfer. An important way to interpret a phylogenetic network is in terms of the trees it displays, which represent all the possible histories of the characters carried by the organisms in the network. Interestingly, however, different networks may display exactly the same set of trees, an observation that poses a problem for network reconstruction: from the perspective of many inference methods such networks are "indistinguishable". This is true for all methods that evaluate a phylogenetic network solely on the basis of how well the displayed trees fit the available data, including all methods based on input data consisting of clades, triples, quartets, or trees with any number of taxa, and also sequence-based approaches such as popular formalisations of maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood for networks. This identifiability problem is partially solved by accounting for branch lengths, although this merely reduces the frequency of the problem. Here we propose that network inference methods should only attempt to reconstruct what they can uniquely identify. To this end, we introduce a novel definition of what constitutes a uniquely reconstructible network. For any given set of indistinguishable networks, we define a canonical network that, under mild assumptions, is unique and thus representative of the entire set. Given data that underwent reticulate evolution, only the canonical form of the underlying phylogenetic network can be uniquely reconstructed. While on the methodological side this will imply a drastic reduction of the solution space in network inference, for the study of reticulate evolution this is a fundamental limitation that will require an important change of perspective when interpreting phylogenetic networks.

Robust multi-view locality preserving regression embedding.

Project description:Feature extraction research has witnessed significant advancements in recent decades, particularly with single-view graph embedding (GE) methods that demonstrate clear advantages by incorporating structural information. However, multi-view data includes descriptions from various perspectives or sensors, offering richer and more comprehensive information compared to single-view data. Research interest in multi-view feature extraction is steadily increasing. Hence, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive framework that extends single-view methods, especially effective GE methods, into multi-view approaches. This article proposes three innovative multi-view feature extraction frameworks based on regression embedding. These frameworks extend single-view GE methods to the multi-view scenario. Our approach meticulously considers the consistency and complementarity of multi-view data, placing strong emphasis on robustness to noisy datasets. Additionally, the use of non-linear shared embedding helps prevent the loss of essential information that may occur with linear projection techniques. Through numerical experiments, we validate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed frameworks on both real and noisy datasets.
