Exhausted CD8 T cells (T<sub>EX</sub>) are a distinct state of T cell differentiation associated with failure to clear chronic viruses and cancer. Immunotherapies such as PD-1 blockade can reinvigorate T<sub>EX</sub> cells, but reinvigoration is not durable.
