Non-Foster acoustic radiation from an active piezoelectric transducer.

ABSTRACT: The quality factor of a passive, linear, small acoustic radiator is fundamentally limited by its volume normalized to the emitted wavelength, imposing severe constraints on the bandwidth and efficiency of compact acoustic sources and of metamaterials composed of arrangements of small acoustic resonators. We demonstrate that these bounds can be overcome by loading a piezoelectric transducer with a non-Foster active circuit, showing that its radiation bandwidth and efficiency can be largely extended beyond what is possible in passive radiators, fundamentally limited only by stability considerations. Based on these principles, we experimentally observe a threefold bandwidth enhancement compared to its passive counterpart, paving the way toward non-Foster acoustic radiation and more broadly active metamaterials that overcome the bandwidth constraints hindering passive systems.

Voltage readout from a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer implanted in a living guinea pig.

Project description:The ability to measure the voltage readout from a sensor implanted inside the living cochlea enables continuous monitoring of intracochlear acoustic pressure locally, which could improve cochlear implants. We developed a piezoelectric intracochlear acoustic transducer (PIAT) designed to sense the acoustic pressure while fully implanted inside a living guinea pig cochlea. The PIAT, fabricated using micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) techniques, consisted of an array of four piezoelectric cantilevers with varying lengths to enhance sensitivity across a wide frequency bandwidth. Prior to implantation, benchtop tests were conducted to characterize the device performance in air and in water. When implanted in the cochlea of an anesthetized guinea pig, the in vivo voltage response from the PIAT was measured in response to 80-95 dB sound pressure level 1-14 kHz sinusoidal acoustic excitation at the entrance of the guinea pig's ear canal. All sensed signals were above the noise floor and unaffected by crosstalk from the cochlear microphonic or external electrical interference. These results demonstrate that external acoustic stimulus can be sensed via the piezoelectric voltage response of the implanted MEMS transducer inside the living cochlea, providing key steps towards developing intracochlear acoustic sensors to replace external or subcutaneous microphones for auditory prosthetics.

Biodegradable nanofiber-based piezoelectric transducer.

Project description:Piezoelectric materials, a type of "smart" material that generates electricity while deforming and vice versa, have been used extensively for many important implantable medical devices such as sensors, transducers, and actuators. However, commonly utilized piezoelectric materials are either toxic or nondegradable. Thus, implanted devices employing these materials raise a significant concern in terms of safety issues and often require an invasive removal surgery, which can damage directly interfaced tissues/organs. Here, we present a strategy for materials processing, device assembly, and electronic integration to 1) create biodegradable and biocompatible piezoelectric PLLA [poly(l-lactic acid)] nanofibers with a highly controllable, efficient, and stable piezoelectric performance, and 2) demonstrate device applications of this nanomaterial, including a highly sensitive biodegradable pressure sensor for monitoring vital physiological pressures and a biodegradable ultrasonic transducer for blood-brain barrier opening that can be used to facilitate the delivery of drugs into the brain. These significant applications, which have not been achieved so far by conventional piezoelectric materials and bulk piezoelectric PLLA, demonstrate the PLLA nanofibers as a powerful material platform that offers a profound impact on various medical fields including drug delivery, tissue engineering, and implanted medical devices.

Manipulation of acoustic focusing with an active and configurable planar metasurface transducer.

Project description:It has a pivotal role in medical science and in industry to concentrate the acoustic energy created with piezoelectric transducers (PTs) into a specific area. However, previous researches seldom consider the focal resolution, whose focal size is much larger than one wavelength. Furthermore, there is to date no such design method of PTs that allows a large degree of freedom to achieve designed focal patterns. Here, an active and configurable planar metasurface PT prototype is proposed to manipulate the acoustic focal pattern and the focal resolution freely. By suitably optimized ring configurations of the active metasurface PT, we demonstrate the manipulation of focal patterns in acoustic far fields, such as the designed focal needle and multi foci. Our method is also able to manipulate and improve the cross-sectional focal resolution from subwavelength to the extreme case: the deep sub-diffraction-limit resolution. Via the acoustic Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral (RSI) cum the binary particle swarm optimization (BPSO), the free manipulation of focusing properties is achieved in acoustics for the first time. Our approach may offer more initiatives where the strict control of acoustic high-energy areas is demanding.

Piezoelectric nanofiber/polymer composite membrane for noise harvesting and active acoustic wave detection.

Project description:Being one of the most common forms of energy existing in the ambient environment, acoustic waves have a great potential to be an energy source. However, the effective energy conversion of an acoustic wave is a great challenge due to its low energy density and broad bandwidth. In this work, we developed a new piezoelectric nanogenerator (PENG), which is mainly composed of a piece of piezoelectric nanofiber/polymer composite membrane. As an energy harvester, the PENG can effectively scavenge a broad low-frequency (from 50 Hz to 400 Hz) acoustic energy from the ambient environment, and it can even scavenge a very weak acoustic energy with a minimum pressure of only 0.18 Pa. When a drum was used as an excitation source, the maximum open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current density of the PENG reached 1.8 V and 1.67 mA m-2, respectively. In addition, the PENG had a good stability and its output frequency and amplitude were closely related to the driving sound wave, which made the PENG capable of detecting acoustic signals in the living environment and have the potential to be applied as a self-powered active acoustic detector.

Confocal acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography using a ring ultrasonic transducer.

Project description:We designed and developed a confocal acoustic radiation force optical coherence elastography system. A ring ultrasound transducer was used to achieve reflection mode excitation and generate an oscillating acoustic radiation force in order to generate displacements within the tissue, which were detected using the phase-resolved optical coherence elastography method. Both phantom and human tissue tests indicate that this system is able to sense the stiffness difference of samples and quantitatively map the elastic property of materials. Our confocal setup promises a great potential for point by point elastic imaging in vivo and differentiation of diseased tissues from normal tissue.

Static Electromechanical Characteristic of a Three-Layer Circular Piezoelectric Transducer.

Project description:The paper presents research related to the functional features of a novel three-layer circular piezoelectric actuator/sensor. The outer layers of the transducer are made of non-piezoelectric material. The middle layer comprises two elements-a piezoelectric disk, and a ring made of non-piezoelectric material. The additional external passive layer has a very important function; it protects the transducer's electrical components against damage caused by external factors. Also, if sparking on the transducer wires or electrodes occurs, this layer prevents fire. So far, there is no analytical model for such a transducer. Closed-form analytical equations are important tools for predicting and optimizing the operation of devices. Thus, using both the Plate Theory and constitutive equations of piezoelectric materials, an analytical formula describing transducer deflection as a function of electrical loads has been found (electromechanical characteristic of the transducer). In addition, it is worth noting that under certain assumptions, the developed analytical model can also be used for two-layer transducers. The tests carried out show satisfactory compliance of the results obtained through the developed solution with both literature data and numerical data. Moreover, based on the obtained analytical model, the effect of selected non-dimensional variables on the actuator performance has been examined. These parameters include dimensions and mechanical properties of both piezoelectric disk and passive plates and strongly influence the behavior of the transducer.

Piezoelectric Multi-Channel Bilayer Transducer for Sensing and Filtering Ossicular Vibration.

Project description:This paper presents an acoustic transducer for fully implantable cochlear implants (FICIs), which can be implanted on the hearing chain to detect and filter the ambient sound in eight frequency bands between 250 and 6000 Hz. The transducer dimensions are conventional surgery compatible. The structure is formed with 3 × 3 × 0.36 mm active space for each layer and 5.2 mg total active mass excluding packaging. Characterization of the transducer is carried on an artificial membrane whose vibration characteristic is similar to the umbo vibration. On the artificial membrane, piezoelectric transducer generates up to 320.3 mVpp under 100 dB sound pressure level (SPL) excitation and covers the audible acoustic frequency. The measured signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) of the channels is up to 84.2 dB. Sound quality of the transducer for fully implantable cochlear implant application is graded with an objective qualification method (PESQ) for the first time in the literature to the best of the knowledge, and scored 3.42/4.5.

Aerosol jet printing of piezoelectric surface acoustic wave thermometer.

Project description:Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices are a subclass of micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) that generate an acoustic emission when electrically stimulated. These transducers also work as detectors, converting surface strain into readable electrical signals. Physical properties of the generated SAW are material dependent and influenced by external factors like temperature. By monitoring temperature-dependent scattering parameters a SAW device can function as a thermometer to elucidate substrate temperature. Traditional fabrication of SAW sensors requires labor- and cost- intensive subtractive processes that produce large volumes of hazardous waste. This study utilizes an innovative aerosol jet printer to directly write consistent, high-resolution, silver comb electrodes onto a Y-cut LiNbO3 substrate. The printed, two-port, 20 MHz SAW sensor exhibited excellent linearity and repeatability while being verified as a thermometer from 25 to 200 ∘C. Sensitivities of the printed SAW thermometer are -96.9×10-6∘ C-1 and -92.0×10-6∘ C-1 when operating in pulse-echo mode and pulse-receiver mode, respectively. These results highlight a repeatable path to the additive fabrication of compact high-frequency SAW thermometers.

Phonon-electron interactions in piezoelectric semiconductor bulk acoustic wave resonators.

Project description:This work presents the first comprehensive investigation of phonon-electron interactions in bulk acoustic standing wave (BAW) resonators made from piezoelectric semiconductor (PS) materials. We show that these interactions constitute a significant energy loss mechanism and can set practical loss limits lower than anharmonic phonon scattering limits or thermoelastic damping limits. Secondly, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that phonon-electron interactions, under appropriate conditions, can result in a significant acoustic gain manifested as an improved quality factor (Q). Measurements on GaN resonators are consistent with the presented interaction model and demonstrate up to 35% dynamic improvement in Q. The strong dependencies of electron-mediated acoustic loss/gain on resonance frequency and material properties are investigated. Piezoelectric semiconductors are an extremely important class of electromechanical materials, and this work provides crucial insights for material choice, material properties, and device design to achieve low-loss PS-BAW resonators along with the unprecedented ability to dynamically tune resonator Q.

Bioinspired Multiresonant Acoustic Devices Based on Electrospun Piezoelectric Polymeric Nanofibers.

Project description:Cochlear hair cells are critical for the conversion of acoustic into electrical signals and their dysfunction is a primary cause of acquired hearing impairments, which worsen with aging. Piezoelectric materials can reproduce the acoustic-electrical transduction properties of the cochlea and represent promising candidates for future cochlear prostheses. The majority of piezoelectric hearing devices so far developed are based on thin films, which have not managed to simultaneously provide the desired flexibility, high sensitivity, wide frequency selectivity, and biocompatibility. To overcome these issues, we hypothesized that fibrous membranes made up of polymeric piezoelectric biocompatible nanofibers could be employed to mimic the function of the basilar membrane, by selectively vibrating in response to different frequencies of sound and transmitting the resulting electrical impulses to the vestibulocochlear nerve. In this study, poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) piezoelectric nanofiber-based acoustic circular sensors were designed and fabricated using the electrospinning technique. The performance of the sensors was investigated with particular focus on the identification of the resonance frequencies and acoustic-electrical conversion in fibrous membrane with different size and fiber orientation. The voltage output (1-17 mV) varied in the range of low resonance frequency (100-400 Hz) depending on the diameter of the macroscale sensors and alignment of the fibers. The devices developed can be regarded as a proof-of-concept demonstrating the possibility of using piezoelectric fibers to convert acoustic waves into electrical signals, through possible synergistic effects of piezoelectricity and triboelectricity. The study has paved the way for the development of self-powered nanofibrous implantable auditory sensors.
