Spatial and temporal variability of brown carbon in United States: implications for direct radiative effects.

ABSTRACT: A newly developed dataset from the Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) observation network, combined with a 3-D chemical transport model, is used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of brown carbon (BrC) in the United States. The model with BrC emitted from biomass burning and biofuel emissions agrees with the seasonal and spatial variability of BrC planetary boundary layer (PBL) absorption aerosol optical depth (AAOD) observations within a factor of 2. The model without whitening, the tendency for absorption to decrease with aerosol aging, overestimates the observed BrC PBL AAOD, and does not reflect the measured BrC PBL AAOD spatial variability. The model shows higher absorption direct radiative effects (DRE) from BrC at northern high latitudes than at mid-latitudes in spring and summer, due to boreal fire emissions, long whitening lifetimes and high surface albedos. These findings highlight the need to study BrC over the Arctic region.

Project description:The behavior and fate of pharmaceutical ingredients in coastal marine ecosystems are not well understood. To address this, the spatial and temporal distribution of 15 high-volume pharmaceuticals were measured over a 1-yr period in Narragansett Bay (RI, USA) to elucidate factors and processes regulating their concentration and distribution. Dissolved concentrations ranged from below detection to 313 ng/L, with 4 pharmaceuticals present at all sites and sampling periods. Eight pharmaceuticals were present in suspended particulate material, ranging in concentration from below detection to 44 ng/g. Partitioning coefficients were determined for some pharmaceuticals, with their range and variability remaining relatively constant throughout the study. Normalization to organic carbon content provided no benefit, indicating other factors played a greater role in regulating partitioning behavior. Within the upper bay, the continuous influx of wastewater treatment plant effluents resulted in sustained, elevated levels of pharmaceuticals. A pharmaceutical concentration gradient was apparent from this zone to the mouth of the bay. For most of the pharmaceuticals, there was a strong relationship with salinity, indicating conservative behavior within the estuary. Short flushing times in Narragansett Bay coupled with pharmaceuticals' presence overwhelmingly in the dissolved phase indicate that most pharmaceuticals will be diluted and transported out of the estuary, with only trace amounts of several compounds sequestered in sediments. The present study identifies factors controlling the temporal and spatial dynamics of dissolved and particulate pharmaceuticals; their partitioning behavior provides an increased understanding of their fate, including bioavailability in an urban estuary. Project description:BackgroundFires emit significant amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. These emissions, however, are highly variable in both space and time. Additionally, CO2 emissions estimates from fires are very uncertain. The combination of high spatial and temporal variability and substantial uncertainty associated with fire CO2 emissions can be problematic to efforts to develop remote sensing, monitoring, and inverse modeling techniques to quantify carbon fluxes at the continental scale. Policy and carbon management decisions based on atmospheric sampling/modeling techniques must account for the impact of fire CO2 emissions; a task that may prove very difficult for the foreseeable future. This paper addresses the variability of CO2 emissions from fires across the US, how these emissions compare to anthropogenic emissions of CO2 and Net Primary Productivity, and the potential implications for monitoring programs and policy development.ResultsAverage annual CO2 emissions from fires in the lower 48 (LOWER48) states from 2002-2006 are estimated to be 213 (+/- 50 std. dev.) Tg CO2 yr-1 and 80 (+/- 89 std. dev.) Tg CO2 yr-1 in Alaska. These estimates have significant interannual and spatial variability. Needleleaf forests in the Southeastern US and the Western US are the dominant source regions for US fire CO2 emissions. Very high emission years typically coincide with droughts, and climatic variability is a major driver of the high interannual and spatial variation in fire emissions. The amount of CO2 emitted from fires in the US is equivalent to 4-6% of anthropogenic emissions at the continental scale and, at the state-level, fire emissions of CO2 can, in some cases, exceed annual emissions of CO2 from fossil fuel usage.ConclusionThe CO2 released from fires, overall, is a small fraction of the estimated average annual Net Primary Productivity and, unlike fossil fuel CO2 emissions, the pulsed emissions of CO2 during fires are partially counterbalanced by uptake of CO2 by regrowing vegetation in the decades following fire. Changes in fire severity and frequency can, however, lead to net changes in atmospheric CO2 and the short-term impacts of fire emissions on monitoring, modeling, and carbon management policy are substantial.

Project description:Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and plasticizers in consumer products, which contributes to widespread exposure of humans. OPE diester metabolites in urine have been used as biomarkers of human exposure to these chemicals. Little is known, however, about occurrence and temporal variability in urinary concentrations of OPE metabolites in humans. In this study, 11 OPE metabolites were measured in 213 urine samples collected from 19 volunteers from Albany, New York, United States, at 3-day intervals for five weeks to investigate temporal variability in urinary concentrations. Diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) and bis(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BDCIPP) were the major OPE metabolites, detected in all urine samples at specific gravity (SG)-adjusted concentrations (geometric mean, GM) of 1060 and 414 pg/mL and creatinine (Cr)-adjusted concentration (GM) of 404 and 156 ng/g, respectively. Inter-day variability in urinary OPE metabolite concentrations in 19 individuals was evaluated by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). The inter-day variability in Cr-adjusted OPE metabolite concentrations (ICC: 0.31-0.67) was lower than those of SG-adjusted (ICC: 0.19-0.71) and unadjusted urinary concentrations (ICC: 0.24-0.74). BDCIPP (ICC: 0.68) and bis(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (BCEP) (ICC: 0.67) concentrations showed a moderate-to-high reliability over the sampling period, whereas the other nine OPE metabolites exhibited a moderate reliability (ICC: 0.31-0.55). Urine samples were further stratified by gender, age, ethnicity, and body mass index (BMI). The concentrations of BDCIPP and DPHP were significantly lower in males with normal BMI (BMI: 18.5-25 kg/m2) than in females and other BMI categories (p < 0.01). Relatively high ICCs, indicating low inter-day variability, were observed for males (ICC: 0.35-0.71) of 30-40 years of age (ICC: 0.34-0.87) with normal BMI (ICC: 0.28-0.64). The daily exposure doses to OPEs were estimated from urinary concentrations of corresponding OPE metabolites. The estimated doses of triphenyl phosphate (TPHP) and triethyl phosphate (TEP), based on median urinary concentrations of their metabolites, were 19.4 and 24.0 ng/kg bw/day, and the exposure dose to ∑OPEs was estimated at 65.3 ng/kg bw/day. Overall, our results indicate a high ICC for Cr-adjusted urinary concentrations of 11 OPE metabolites in urine.
