Converting the guided-modes of Bloch surface waves with surface pattern.

ABSTRACT: The guided-modes of Bloch surface waves, such as the transverse electric modes (TE00 and TE01 modes), can simultaneously exist in a low-refractive-index ridge waveguide with subwavelength thickness that are deposited on an all dielectric one-dimension photonic crystal. By using the finite difference frequency domain method, coupled mode theory and finite-difference time-domain method, the conversion between the guided-modes has been investigated. This conversion can be realized in a broadband wavelength with surface pattern of this low-index ridge. This conversion is useful for developing lab-on-a-chip photonic devices, such as a mode converter that can maintain the output mode purity over 90% with working wavelength ranging from 590 to 680 nm, and a power splitter that can maintain the splitting ratio over 8:2 with wavelength ranging from 530 to 710 nm.

Diffraction-Free Bloch Surface Waves.

Project description:Here, we demonstrate a diffraction-free Bloch surface wave sustained on all-dielectric multilayers that does not diffract after being passed through three obstacles or across a single mode fiber. It can propagate in a straight line for distances longer than 110 μm at a wavelength of 633 nm and could be applied as an in-plane optical virtual probe both in air and in an aqueous environment. Its ability to be used in water, its long diffraction-free distance, and its tolerance to multiple obstacles make this wave ideal for certain applications in areas such as the biological sciences, where many measurements are made on glass surfaces or for which an aqueous environment is required, and for high-speed interconnections between chips, where low loss is necessary.

Silver Nanowires for Reconfigurable Bloch Surface Waves.

Project description:The use of a single silver nanowire as a flexible coupler to transform a free space beam into a Bloch surface wave propagating on a dielectric multilayer is proposed. Based on Huygens' Principle, when a Gaussian beam is focused onto a straight silver nanowire, a Bloch surface wave is generated and propagates perpendicular to the nanowire. By curving the silver nanowire, the surface wave can be focused. Furthermore, the spatial phase of the incident laser beam can be actively controlled with the aid of a spatial light modulator, resulting in the reconfigurable or dynamically controlled Bloch surface waves. The low cost of the chemically synthesized silver nanowires and the high flexibility with regard to tuning the spatial phase of the incident light make this approach very promising for various applications including optical micromanipulation, fluorescence imaging, and sensing.

Trapping metallic particles using focused Bloch surface waves.

Project description:Metallic particles are promising for applications in various areas, including optical sensing, imaging and electric field enhancement-induced optical and thermal effects. The ability to trap or transport these particles stably will be important in these applications. However, while traditional optical tweezers can trap metallic Rayleigh particles easily, it is difficult to trap metallic mesoscopic/Mie particles because of the strong scattering forces that come from the far-field trapping laser beam. Here we demonstrate that metallic particles can be trapped stably using focused Bloch surface waves that propagate in the near-field region of a dielectric multilayer structure with a photonic band gap. Focused Bloch surface waves can be excited efficiently using an annular beam with azimuthal polarization and a high-numerical-aperture objective. Numerical simulations were performed to calculate the optical forces loaded on a gold particle by focused Bloch surface waves and the results were consistent with those of the experimental observations.

Focusing and extraction of light mediated by Bloch surface waves.

Project description:The control of emission from localized light sources is an objective of outstanding relevance in nanophotonics. In a recent past, a large number of metallic nanostructures has been proposed to this end, wherein plasmonic modes are exploited as energy carriers on a subwavelength scale. As an interesting alternative, we present here the use of surface modes on patterned dielectric multilayers to deliver electromagnetic power from free-space to localized volumes and vice versa. Thanks to this low-loss energy transfer, proper periodic ring structures are shown to provide a subwavelength focusing of an external radiation onto the multilayer surface. By reciprocity, the radiated power from emitters within the ring center is shown to be efficiently beamed in the free-space, with a well-controlled angular divergence. This mechanism overcomes some important limitations involved in the all-plasmonic approach, while opening new opportunities for hybrid devices in photon management applications such as optical sensing and lighting.

Vortex Beam Generation by Spin-Orbit Interaction with Bloch Surface Waves.

Project description:Axis-symmetric grooves milled in metallic slabs have been demonstrated to promote the transfer of Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) from far- to near-field and vice versa, thanks to spin-orbit coupling effects involving Surface Plasmons (SP). However, the high absorption losses and the polarization constraints, which are intrinsic in plasmonic structures, limit their effectiveness for applications in the visible spectrum, particularly if emitters located in close proximity to the metallic surface are concerned. Here, an alternative mechanism for vortex beam generation is presented, wherein a free-space radiation possessing OAM is obtained by diffraction of Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) on a dielectric multilayer. A circularly polarized laser beam is tightly focused on the multilayer surface by means of an immersion optics, such that TE-polarized BSWs are launched radially from the focused spot. While propagating on the multilayer surface, BSWs exhibit a spiral-like wavefront due to the Spin-Orbit Interaction (SOI). A spiral grating surrounding the illumination area provides for the BSW diffraction out-of-plane and imparts an additional azimuthal geometric phase distribution defined by the topological charge of the spiral structure. At infinity, the constructive interference results into free-space beams with defined combinations of polarization and OAM satisfying the conservation of the Total Angular Momentum, based on the incident polarization handedness and the spiral grating topological charge. As an extension of this concept, chiral diffractive structures for BSWs can be used in combination with surface cavities hosting light sources therein.

Inverse photonic design of functional elements that focus Bloch surface waves.

Project description:Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are sustained at the interface of a suitably designed one-dimensional (1D) dielectric photonic crystal and an ambient material. The elements that control the propagation of BSWs are defined by a spatially structured device layer on top of the 1D photonic crystal that locally changes the effective index of the BSW. An example of such an element is a focusing device that squeezes an incident BSW into a tiny space. However, the ability to focus BSWs is limited since the index contrast achievable with the device layer is usually only on the order of Δn≈0.1 for practical reasons. Conventional elements, e.g., discs or triangles, which rely on a photonic nanojet to focus BSWs, operate insufficiently at such a low index contrast. To solve this problem, we utilize an inverse photonic design strategy to attain functional elements that focus BSWs efficiently into spatial domains slightly smaller than half the wavelength. Selected examples of such functional elements are fabricated. Their ability to focus BSWs is experimentally verified by measuring the field distributions with a scanning near-field optical microscope. Our focusing elements are promising ingredients for a future generation of integrated photonic devices that rely on BSWs, e.g., to carry information, or lab-on-chip devices for specific sensing applications.

Bloch surface waves confined in one dimension with a single polymeric nanofibre.

Project description:Polymeric fibres with small radii (such as ≤125 nm) are delicate to handle and should be laid down on a solid substrate to obtain practical devices. However, placing these nanofibres on commonly used glass substrates prevents them from guiding light. In this study, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate that when the nanofibre is placed on a suitable dielectric multilayer, it supports a guided mode, a Bloch surface wave (BSW) confined in one dimension. The physical origin of this new mode is discussed in comparison with the typical two-dimensional BSW mode. Polymeric nanofibres are easily fabricated to contain fluorophores, which make the dielectric nanofibre and multilayer configuration suitable for developing a large range of new nanometric scale devices, such as processor-memory interconnections, devices with sensitivity to target analytes, incident polarization and multi-colour BSW modes.

A fluorescent one-dimensional photonic crystal for label-free biosensing based on BLOCH surface waves.

Project description:A one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) based on a planar stack of dielectric layers is used as an optical transducer for biosensing, upon the coupling of TE-polarized Bloch Surface Waves (BSW). The structure is tailored with a polymeric layer providing a chemical functionality facilitating the covalent binding of orienting proteins needed for a subsequent grafting of antibodies in an immunoassay detection scheme. The polymeric layer is impregnated with Cy3 dye, in such a way that the photonic structure can exhibit an emissive behavior. The BSW-coupled fluorescence shift is used as a means for detecting refractive index variations occurring at the 1DPC surface, according to a label-free concept. The proposed working principle is successfully demonstrated in real-time tracking of protein G covalent binding on the 1DPC surface within a fluidic cell.

Spectral Characterization of Mid-Infrared Bloch Surface Waves Excited on a Truncated 1D Photonic Crystal.

Project description:The many fundamental roto-vibrational resonances of chemical compounds result in strong absorption lines in the mid-infrared region (λ ∼ 2-20 μm). For this reason, mid-infrared spectroscopy plays a key role in label-free sensing, in particular, for chemical recognition, but often lacks the required sensitivity to probe small numbers of molecules. In this work, we propose a vibrational sensing scheme based on Bloch surface waves (BSWs) on 1D photonic crystals to increase the sensitivity of mid-infrared sensors. We report on the design and deposition of CaF2/ZnS 1D photonic crystals. Moreover, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the possibility to sustain narrow σ-polarized BSW modes together with broader π-polarized modes in the range of 3-8 μm by means of a customized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy setup. The multilayer stacks are deposited directly on CaF2 prisms, reducing the number of unnecessary interfaces when exciting in the Kretschmann-Raether configuration. Finally, we compare the performance of mid-IR sensors based on surface plasmon polaritons with the BSW-based sensor. The figures of merit found for BSWs in terms of confinement of the electromagnetic field and propagation length puts them as forefrontrunners for label-free and polarization-dependent sensing devices.

Leaky Bloch-like surface waves in the radiation-continuum for sensitivity enhanced biosensors via azimuthal interrogation.

Project description:Dielectric multilayer structures with a grating profile on the top-most layer adds an additional degree of freedom to the phase matching conditions for Bloch surface wave excitation. The conditions for Bloch surface wave coupling can be achieved by rotating both polar and azimuthal angles. The generation of Bloch surface waves as a function of azimuthal angle has similar characteristics to conventional grating coupled Bloch surface waves. However, azimuthally generated Bloch surface waves have enhanced angular sensitivity compared to conventional polar angle coupled modes, which makes them appropriate for detecting tiny variations in surface refractive index due to the addition of nano-particles such as protein molecules.
