Ultralong-Range Polariton-Assisted Energy Transfer in Organic Microcavities.

ABSTRACT: Non-radiative energy transfer between spatially-separated molecules in a microcavity can occur when an excitonic state on both molecules are strongly-coupled to the same optical mode, forming so-called "hybrid" polaritons. Such energy transfer has previously been explored when thin-films of different molecules are relatively closely spaced (≈100 nm). In this manuscript, we explore strong-coupled microcavities in which thin-films of two J-aggregated molecular dyes were separated by a spacer layer having a thickness of up to 2 μm. Here, strong light-matter coupling and hybridisation between the excitonic transition is identified using white-light reflectivity and photoluminescence emission. We use steady-state spectroscopy to demonstrate polariton-mediated energy transfer between such coupled states over "mesoscopic distances", with this process being enhanced compared to non-cavity control structures.

Theory for polariton-assisted remote energy transfer.

Project description:Strong-coupling between light and matter produces hybridized states (polaritons) whose delocalization and electromagnetic character allow for novel modifications in spectroscopy and chemical reactivity of molecular systems. Recent experiments have demonstrated remarkable distance-independent long-range energy transfer between molecules strongly coupled to optical microcavity modes. To shed light on the mechanism of this phenomenon, we present the first comprehensive theory of polariton-assisted remote energy transfer (PARET) based on strong-coupling of donor and/or acceptor chromophores to surface plasmons. Application of our theory demonstrates that PARET up to a micron is indeed possible. In particular, we report two regimes for PARET: in one case, strong-coupling to a single type of chromophore leads to transfer mediated largely by surface plasmons while in the other case, strong-coupling to both types of chromophores creates energy transfer pathways mediated by vibrational relaxation. Importantly, we highlight conditions under which coherence enhances or deteriorates these processes. For instance, while exclusive strong-coupling to donors can enhance transfer to acceptors, the reverse turns out not to be true. However, strong-coupling to acceptors can shift energy levels in a way that transfer from acceptors to donors can occur, thus yielding a chromophore role-reversal or "carnival effect". This theoretical study demonstrates the potential for confined electromagnetic fields to control and mediate PARET, thus opening doors to the design of remote mesoscale interactions between molecular systems.

Polariton-assisted excitation energy channeling in organic heterojunctions.

Project description:Exciton-polaritons are hybrid light-matter states resulting from strong exciton-photon coupling. The wave function of the polariton is a mixture of light and matter, enabling long-range energy transfer between spatially separated chromophores. Moreover, their delocalized nature, inherited from the photon component, has been predicted to enhance exciton transport. Here, we strongly couple an organic heterojunction consisting of energy/electron donor and acceptor materials to the same cavity mode. Using time-resolved spectroscopy and optoelectrical characterization, we show that the rate of exciton harvesting is enhanced with one order of magnitude and the rate of energy transfer in the system is increased two- to threefold in the strong coupling regime. Our results exemplify two means of efficiently channeling excitation energy to a heterojunction interface, where charge separation can occur. This study opens a new door to increase the overall efficiency of light harvesting systems using the tool of strong light-matter interactions.

Cascaded exciton energy transfer in a monolayer semiconductor lateral heterostructure assisted by surface plasmon polariton.

Project description:Atomically thin lateral heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides have recently been demonstrated. In monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides, exciton energy transfer is typically limited to a short range (~1 μm), and additional losses may be incurred at the interfacial regions of a lateral heterostructure. To overcome these challenges, here we experimentally implement a planar metal-oxide-semiconductor structure by placing a WS2/MoS2 monolayer heterostructure on top of an Al2O3-capped Ag single-crystalline plate. We find that the exciton energy transfer range can be extended to tens of microns in the hybrid structure mediated by an exciton-surface plasmon polariton-exciton conversion mechanism, allowing cascaded exciton energy transfer from one transition metal dichalcogenides region supporting high-energy exciton resonance to a different transition metal dichalcogenides region in the lateral heterostructure with low-energy exciton resonance. The realized planar hybrid structure combines two-dimensional light-emitting materials with planar plasmonic waveguides and offers great potential for developing integrated photonic and plasmonic devices.Exciton energy transfer in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides is limited to short distances. Here, Shi et al. fabricate a planar metal-oxide-semiconductor structure and show that exciton energy transfer can be extended to tens of microns, mediated by an exciton-surface-plasmon-polariton-exciton conversion mechanism.

Long-Range and High-Efficiency Plasmon-Assisted Forster Resonance Energy Transfer.

Project description:The development of a long-range and efficient Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process is essential for its application in key enabling optoelectronic and sensing technologies. Via controlling the delocalization of the donor's electric field and Purcell enhancements, we experimentally demonstrate long-range and high-efficiency Förster resonance energy transfer using a plasmonic nanogap formed between a silver nanoparticle and an extended silver film. Our measurements show that the FRET range can be extended to over 200 nm while keeping the FRET efficiency over 0.38, achieving an efficiency enhancement factor of ∼108 with respect to a homogeneous environment. Reducing Purcell enhancements by removing the extended silver film increases the FRET efficiency to 0.55, at the expense of the FRET rate. We support our experimental findings with numerical calculations based on three-dimensional finite difference time-domain calculations and treat the donor and acceptor as classical dipoles. Our enhanced FRET range and efficiency structures provide a powerful strategy to develop novel optoelectronic devices and long-range FRET imaging and sensing systems.

Trion-Polariton Formation in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Microcavities.

Project description:We demonstrate the formation and tuning of charged trion-polaritons in polymer-sorted (6,5) single-walled carbon nanotubes in a planar metal-clad microcavity at room temperature. The positively charged trion-polaritons were induced by electrochemical doping and characterized by angle-resolved reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The doping level of the nanotubes within the microcavity was controlled by the applied bias and thus enabled tuning from mainly excitonic to a mixture of exciton and trion transitions. Mode splitting of more than 70 meV around the trion energy and emission from the new lower polariton branch corroborate a transition from exciton-polaritons (neutral) to trion-polaritons (charged). The estimated charge-to-mass ratio of these trion-polaritons is 200 times higher than that of electrons or holes in carbon nanotubes, which has exciting implications for the realization of polaritonic charge transport.

Macrocycle γ-Cyclodextrin Confined Polymeric Chromophore Ultralong Phosphorescence Energy Transfer.

Project description:A multicolor persistent luminescence solid polymeric system based on macrocycle-confined phosphorescence energy transfer was constructed with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) and poly(vinyl alcohol) modified by triphenylene derivative (TP-PVA). Attributed to the fact that macrocycles effectively suppress the aggregation of guests and form a rigid environment via coassembling with the polymer, the phosphorescence lifetime of the yielded polymeric films is prolonged from 0.22 to 5.84 s, accompanied by a visible afterglow of more than 1 min. Furthermore, upon doping with several commercial dyes, full-color afterglow emissions with a duration of more than 50 s are realized through phosphorescence energy transfer. Notably, the multicolor-emitting-afterglow materials are successfully exploited for noctilucent lighting and anticounterfeiting ink.

Wide-range lifetime-tunable and responsive ultralong organic phosphorescent multi-host/guest system.

Project description:The rational lifetime-tuning strategy of ultralong organic phosphorescence is extraordinarily important but seldom reported. Herein, a series of multi-host/guest ultralong organic phosphorescence materials with dynamic lifetime-tuning properties were reported. By doping a non-room-temperature phosphorescence emitter into various solid host matrices with continuously reduced triplet energy levels, a wide-range lifetime (from 3.9 ms gradually to 376.9 ms) phosphorescence with unchangeable afterglow colors were realized. Further studies revealed that the host matrices were employed to afford rigid environment and proper energy levels to generate and stabilize the long-live triplet excitons. Meanwhile, these multi-host/guest ultralong organic phosphorescence materials also exhibited excitation-dependent phosphorescence and temperature-controlled afterglow on/off switching properties, according to the virtue of various photophysical and thermal properties of the host matrices. This work provides a guiding strategy to realize lifetime-tuning ultralong organic phosphorescence with lifetime-order encoding characteristic towards widespread applications in time-resolved information displaying, higher-level security protection, and dynamic multi-dimensional anti-counterfeiting.

Polariton-Mediated Ultrafast Nonlinear Energy Transfer in a van der Waals Superlattice.

Project description:Exciton-polariton dynamics in 2D materials have garnered substantial attention across diverse scientific domains for fundamental research with potential applications in optoelectronics. However, practical implementation has been hindered by the challenge of maintaining stable and long-range polariton propagation. Here, we present an innovative material platform featuring extensive monolayer WS2/Al2O3 superlattices (a square with a length of >0.5 cm) coupled to a waveguide mode designed to host exciton-polaritons with operation at room temperature. Time-resolved transient absorption spectra show picosecond nonlinear energy transfer phenomena between upper and lower polariton states, clarifying the dynamic behavior within this quantum realm. In addition, we observed population inversion behavior between the two polariton states that facilitate potential avenues for creating polariton-based ultrafast modulators and switches. This research not only advances our fundamental understanding of polariton dynamics but also promotes the development of innovative technologies that harness these fascinating quantum phenomena.

Long-Range Energy Transfer in Protein Megamolecules.

Project description:In this investigation, we report evidence for energy transfer in new protein-based megamolecules with tunable distances between donor and acceptor fluorescent proteins. The megamolecules used in this work are monodisperse oligomers, with molecular weights of ?100-300 kDa and lengths of ?5-20 nm, and are precisely defined structures of fusion protein building blocks and covalent cross-linkers. Such structures are promising because the study of energy transfer in protein complexes is usually difficult in this long length regime due to synthetic limitations. We incorporated fluorescent proteins into the megamolecule structure and varied the separation distance between donor and acceptor by changing the length of the cross-linker in dimer conjugates and inserting nonfluorescent spacer proteins to create oligomers. Two-photon absorption measurements demonstrated strong coupling between donor and acceptor dipoles in the megamolecules. For the dimer systems, no effect of the cross-linker length on energy transfer efficiency was observed with the steady-state fluorescence investigation. However, for the same dimer conjugates, energy transfer rates decreased upon increasing cross-linker length, as evaluated by fluorescence up-conversion. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to rationalize the results, providing quantitative agreement between measured and calculated energy transfer lengths for steady-state results, and showing that the differences between the time-resolved and steady-state measurements arise from the long time scale for large-scale fluctuations in the megamolecule structure. Our results show an increase in energy transfer length with increasing megamolecule size. This is evidence for long-range energy transfer in large protein megamolecules.
