Self-powered flexible all-perovskite X-ray detectors with high sensitivity and fast response.

ABSTRACT: Perovskite materials have demonstrated superior performance in many aspects of optoelectronic applications including X-ray scintillation, photovoltaic, photodetection, and so on. In this work, we demonstrate a self-powered flexible all-perovskite X-ray detector with high sensitivity and fast response, which can be realized by integrating CsPbBr₃ perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) as the X-ray scintillator with a CH₃NH₃PbI₃ perovskite photodetector. The PNCs scintillator exhibits ultra-fast light decay of 2.81 ns, while the perovskite photodetector gives a fast response time of ∼0.3 μs and high-specific detectivity of ∼2.4×10¹² Jones. The synergistic effect of these two components ultimately leads to a self-powered flexible all-perovskite X-ray detector that delivers high sensitivity of 600-1,270 μC/mGy_aircm³ under X-ray irradiation and fast radiation-to-current response time.

Sr-Doping All-Inorganic CsPbBr3 Perovskite Thick Film for Self-Powered X-ray Detectors.

Project description:The all-inorganic perovskite cesium lead bromine (CsPbBr3) has attracted much attention in the field of X-ray detectors because of its high X-ray absorption coefficient, high carrier collection efficiency, and easy solution preparation. The low-cost anti-solvent method is the main method to prepare CsPbBr3; during this process, solvent volatilization will bring a large number of holes to the film, leading to the increase of defects. Based on the heteroatomic doping strategy, we propose that Pb2+ should be partially replaced by Sr2+ to prepare leadless all-inorganic perovskite. The introduction of Sr2+ promoted the ordered growth of CsPbBr3 in the vertical direction, increased the density and uniformity of the thick film, and achieved the goal of CsPbBr3 thick film repairing. In addition, the prepared CsPbBr3 and CsPbBr3:Sr X-ray detectors were self-powered without external bias, maintaining a stable response during on and off states at different X-ray dose rates. Furthermore, the detector base on 160 µm CsPbBr3:Sr had a sensitivity of 517.02 µC Gyair-1 cm-3 at zero bias under the dose rate of 0.955 µGy ms-1 and it obtained a fast response speed of 0.053-0.148 s. Our work provides a new opportunity to produce cost-effective and highly efficient self-powered perovskite X-ray detectors in a sustainable way.

2D perovskite-based high spatial resolution X-ray detectors.

Project description:X-ray radiography is the most widely used imaging technique with applications encompassing medical and industrial imaging, homeland security, and materials research. Although a significant amount of research and development has gone into improving the spatial resolution of the current state-of-the-art indirect X-ray detectors, it is still limited by the detector thickness and microcolumnar structure quality. This paper demonstrates high spatial resolution X-ray imaging with solution-processable two-dimensional hybrid perovskite single-crystal scintillators grown inside microcapillary channels as small as 20 µm. These highly scalable non-hygroscopic detectors demonstrate excellent spatial resolution similar to the direct X-ray detectors. X-ray imaging results of a camera constructed using this scintillator show Modulation Transfer Function values significantly better than the current state-of-the-art X-ray detectors. These structured detectors open up a new era of low-cost large-area ultrahigh spatial resolution high frame rate X-ray imaging with numerous applications.

Spontaneous Cooling Enables High-Quality Perovskite Wafers for High-Sensitivity X-Ray Detectors with a Low-Detection Limit.

Project description:Developing high-quality perovskite wafers is essential for integrating perovskite technology throughout the chip industry chain. In this article, a spontaneous cooling strategy with a hot-pressing technique is presented to develop high-purity, wafer-scale, pinhole-free perovskite wafers with a reflective surface. This method can be extended to a variety of perovskite wafers, including organic-inorganic, 2D, and lead-free perovskites. Besides, the size of the wafer with diameters of 10, 15, and 20 mm can be tailored by changing the mold. Furthermore, the mechanism of spontaneous cooling for improving the quality of perovskite wafers is revealed. Finally, the high-quality lead-free Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite wafers demonstrate excellent X-ray detection performances with a high sensitivity of 3433.6 µC Gyair -1 cm-2 and a low detection limit of 33.17 nGyair s-1. Moreover, the Cs3Cu2I5 wafers exhibit outstanding environmental and operational stability even without encapsulation. These research presents a spontaneous cooling strategy to achieve wafer-scale, high-quality perovskites with mirror-like surfaces for X-ray detection, paving the way for integrating perovskites into electronic and optoelectronic devices and promoting the practical application of perovskite X-ray detectors.

High sensitivity organic inorganic hybrid X-ray detectors with direct transduction and broadband response.

Project description:X-ray detectors are critical to healthcare diagnostics, cancer therapy and homeland security, with many potential uses limited by system cost and/or detector dimensions. Current X-ray detector sensitivities are limited by the bulk X-ray attenuation of the materials and consequently necessitate thick crystals (~1 mm-1 cm), resulting in rigid structures, high operational voltages and high cost. Here we present a disruptive, flexible, low cost, broadband, and high sensitivity direct X-ray transduction technology produced by embedding high atomic number bismuth oxide nanoparticles in an organic bulk heterojunction. These hybrid detectors demonstrate sensitivities of 1712 µC mGy-1 cm-3 for "soft" X-rays and ~30 and 58 µC mGy-1 cm-3 under 6 and 15 MV "hard" X-rays generated from a medical linear accelerator; strongly competing with the current solid state detectors, all achieved at low bias voltages (-10 V) and low power, enabling detector operation powered by coin cell batteries.

Simulation and design of folded perovskite x-ray detectors.

Project description:A variety of medical, industrial, and scientific applications requires highly sensitive and cost-effective x-ray detectors for photon energies ranging from keV to MeV. Adapting the thickness of polycrystalline or single crystal conversion layers especially to high-energy applications increases the complexity of fabrication and potentially decreases the performance of conventional direct conversion x-ray detectors. To tackle the challenges with respect to the active layer thickness and to combine the superior performance of single crystal materials with the low-cost nature of polycrystalline conversion layers, we investigate thin film x-ray detector technologies based on a folded device architecture. Analytical models simulating the sensitivity and the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) are used to evaluate the performance of folded detectors based on polycrystalline organic-inorganic perovskite semiconductors in various layout configurations and for different photon energies. Simulations of folded perovskite devices show high sensitivities. The DQE analysis introduces additional noise related boundary conditions for the folding length. A comparison with conventional detectors based on state of the art conversion materials at different photon energies demonstrates the potential of the folded detector layout as simulated sensitivities are comparable to single crystal detectors.

Designing Ultraflexible Perovskite X-Ray Detectors through Interface Engineering.

Project description:X-ray detectors play a pivotal role in development and advancement of humankind, from far-reaching impact in medicine to furthering the ability to observe distant objects in outer space. While other electronics show the ability to adapt to flexible and lightweight formats, state-of-the-art X-ray detectors rely on materials requiring bulky and fragile configurations, severely limiting their applications. Lead halide perovskites is one of the most rapidly advancing novel materials with success in the field of semiconductor devices. Here, an ultraflexible, lightweight, and highly conformable passively operated thin film perovskite X-ray detector with a sensitivity as high as 9.3 ± 0.5 µC Gy-1 cm-2 at 0 V and a remarkably low limit of detection of 0.58 ± 0.05 μGy s-1 is presented. Various electron and hole transporting layers accessing their individual impact on the detector performance are evaluated. Moreover, it is shown that this ultrathin form-factor allows for fabrication of devices detecting X-rays equivalently from front and back side.

Dark current modeling of thick perovskite X-ray detectors.

Project description:Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) have demonstrated excellent performances in detection of X-rays and gamma-rays. Most studies focus on improving the sensitivity of single-pixel MHP detectors. However, little work pays attention to the dark current, which is crucial for the back-end circuit integration. Herein, the requirement of dark current is quantitatively evaluated as low as 10-9 A/cm2 for X-ray imagers integrated on pixel circuits. Moreover, through the semiconductor device analysis and simulation, we reveal that the main current compositions of thick perovskite X-ray detectors are the thermionic-emission current (JT) and the generation-recombination current (Jg-r). The typical observed failures of p-n junctions in thick detectors are caused by the high generation-recombination current due to the band mismatch and interface defects. This work provides a deep insight into the design of high sensitivity and low dark current perovskite X-ray detectors.

A Sprayed Graphene Pattern-Based Flexible Strain Sensor with High Sensitivity and Fast Response.

Project description:Flexible strain sensors have a wide range of applications in biomedical science, aerospace industry, portable devices, precise manufacturing, etc. However, the manufacturing processes of most flexible strain sensors previously reported have usually required high manufacturing costs and harsh experimental conditions. Besides, research interests are often focused on improving a single attribute parameter while ignoring others. This work aims to propose a simple method of manufacturing flexible graphene-based strain sensors with high sensitivity and fast response. Firstly, oxygen plasma treats the substrate to improve the interfacial interaction between graphene and the substrate, thereby improving device performance. The graphene solution is then sprayed using a soft PET mask to define a pattern for making the sensitive layer. This flexible strain sensor exhibits high sensitivity (gauge factor ~100 at 1% strain), fast response (response time: 400⁻700 μs), good stability (1000 cycles), and low overshoot (<5%) as well. Those processes used are compatible with a variety of complexly curved substrates and is expected to broaden the application of flexible strain sensors.

Determination of X-ray detection limit and applications in perovskite X-ray detectors.

Project description:X-ray detection limit and sensitivity are important figure of merits for perovskite X-ray detectors, but literatures lack a valid mathematic expression for determining the lower limit of detection for a perovskite X-ray detector. In this work, we present a thorough analysis and new method for X-ray detection limit determination based on a statistical model that correlates the dark current and the X-ray induced photocurrent with the detection limit. The detection limit can be calculated through the measurement of dark current and sensitivity with an easy-to-follow practice. Alternatively, the detection limit may also be obtained by the measurement of dark current and photocurrent when repeatedly lowering the X-ray dose rate. While the material quality is critical, we show that the device architecture and working mode also have a significant influence on the sensitivity and the detection limit. Our work establishes a fair comparison metrics for material and detector development.

Manipulating perovskite structural asymmetry for high-performing self-powered full-stokes polarimetry.

Project description:Developing direct full-stokes imaging polarimetry is essential for various applications but remains challenging. Perovskites have superior optoelectronic properties and structural diversity, making them ideal candidates for high-performing direct full-stokes polarimetry. However, perovskite suffers low chiroptical activity due to inefficient chiral transfer, which greatly limits its circular-polarization-vector discrimination. These issues urgently require remedy. Here, we demonstrate that perovskites' chiroptical activity is highly related to their structural chiral-distortion extent. We propose using halide mixing to construct asymmetric chiral transfer to heighten its structural chiral-distortion extent. Accordingly, we report a 16-fold increment in the optical chiroptical activity. Further ab initio calculations verify that the enhancement is due to the strengthened magnetic transition dipole in mixed-halide structures. We herein report a self-powered, direct full-Stokes polarimetry with a high detectivity up to 1.2 × 1012 Jones and low detection errors (ΔS1-3 ≤ 5.0%). We further showcase their application in full-stokes imaging polarimetry with the lowest detection errors yet.
