Impact of heteroatom addition into mesoporous silica for water adsorption in the low partial pressure range.

ABSTRACT: Mesoporous silicas are known to be high-performing water adsorbents in high humidity levels due to their large pore volumes. However, for low humidity conditions, these materials typically present a less expressive performance, which is a drawback for many applications. In the present report, mesoporous silica SBA-15 was functionalized with Al, Ti, Zr and Li in order to improve their performance in this condition. The influence of functionalization in porosity, morphology and acidic sites was investigated. Samples with an increased number of acidic sites and with higher microporosity when compared to pure silica were produced. This was responsible for their enhanced performance for water adsorption in low moisture conditions. Sample functionalized with zirconium in SBA-15 synthesis improved the water adsorption capacity of pure silica by three times, reaching up to 127 g kg^-1 at a relative pressure of 0.2 and 570 g kg^-1 close to saturation pressure. This sample was found to be a promising material to be applied in processes which require high adsorption capacities in both low and high water partial pressure ranges. Moreover, the understanding of the mechanisms behind the heteroatom functionalization can be applied to any silica material in order to enhance its attractiveness towards any polar molecule.

Project description:To combat water scarcity in remote areas around the world, adsorption-based atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) has been proposed as a technology that can be used alongside existing water production capabilities. However, commonly used adsorbents either have low water adsorption loadings or are difficult to regenerate. In this work, we developed two novel hierarchical silica-salt composites that both exhibit high water adsorption loadings under dry and humid conditions. The total water vapor loading, kinetics, and heats of water adsorption for both silica-salt composites were investigated. As hierarchical silicas have tunable pores and large pore volumes, these materials serve as effective host matrixes for the hygroscopic salt LiCl. Our results suggest that hierarchical pores play a significant role in water adsorption: micropores and some smaller mesopores act as "storage" sites for hygroscopic salt, whereas larger mesopores and macropores increase the accessibility of water vapor into the silica. Using this mix of pores, we achieved greater than 0.4 g H2O/g composite at 10% RH and 27 °C. Additionally, we found that the salt-impregnated silica and bare silica had the same heat of adsorption: 80-90 kJ/mol. The results suggest that the H-bond interactions are similar for both systems and that the primary mechanism at play here is water cluster adsorption/desorption. Despite the similar energies, the LiCl-containing materials exhibited considerably slower kinetics than bare silica materials. Of equal importance to the adsorption capacity and kinetics of these composites is their mechanical stability. To assess their mechanical stability, high-energy ball milling of silica was conducted to create more uniform particle sizes. However, reduced particle sizes came at a cost─the BET surface areas and pore volumes were drastically decreased after more than 1 h of ball milling. Findings from this study suggest that short-term ball milling may be a viable large-scale option to reduce particle size in silica materials without sacrificing significant performance.

Project description:In recent years, researchers focused their attention on mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) owing to the considerable advancements of the characterization methods, especially electron microscopy methods, which allowed for a clear visualization of the pore structure and the materials encapsulated within the pores, along with the X-ray diffraction (small angles) methods and specific surface area determination by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) technique. Mesoporous silica gained important consideration in biomedical applications thanks to its tunable pore size, high surface area, surface functionalization possibility, chemical stability, and pore nature. Specifically, the nature of the pores allows for the encapsulation and release of anti-cancer drugs into tumor tissues, which makes MSN ideal candidates as drug delivery carriers in cancer treatment. Moreover, the inner and outer surfaces of the MSN provide a platform for further functionalization approaches that could enhance the adsorption of the drug within the silica network and the selective targeting and controlled release to the desired site. Additionally, stimuli-responsive mesoporous silica systems are being used as mediators in cancer therapy, and through the release of the therapeutic agents hosted inside the pores under the action of specific triggering factors, it can selectively deliver them into tumor tissues. Another important application of the mesoporous silica nanomaterials is related to its ability to extract different hazardous species from aqueous media, some of these agents being antibiotics, pesticides, or anti-tumor agents. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the methods of MSN synthesis and related characteristics, the available surface functionalization strategies, and the most important applications of MSN in adsorption as well as release studies. Owing to the increasing antibiotic resistance, the need for developing materials for antibiotic removal from wastewaters is important and mesoporous materials already proved remarkable performances in environmental applications, including removal or even degradation of hazardous agents such as antibiotics and pesticides.
