Dual metal nanoparticles within multicompartmentalized mesoporous organosilicas for efficient sequential hydrogenation.

ABSTRACT: Controlling localization of multiple metal nanoparticles on a single support is at the cutting edge of designing cascade catalysts, but is still a scientific and technological challenge because of the lack of nanostructured materials that can not only host metal nanoparticles in different sub-compartments but also enable efficient molecular transport between different metals. Herein we report a multicompartmentalized mesoporous organosilica with spatially separated sub-compartments that are connected by short nanochannels. Such a unique structure allows co-localization of Ru and Pd nanoparticles in a nanoscale proximal fashion. The so designed cascade catalyst exhibits an order of magnitude activity enhancement in the sequential hydrogenation of nitroarenes to cyclohexylamines compared with its mono/bi-metallic counterparts. Crucially, an interesting phenomenon of neighboring metal-assisted hydrogenation via hydrogen spillover is observed, contributing to the significant enhancement in catalytic efficiency. The multicompartmentalized architectures along with the revealed mechanism of accelerated hydrogenation provide vast opportunity for designing efficient cascade catalysts.

Project description:Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems are among the most popular research topics in recent years. Compared with traditional drug carriers, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) offer modifiable surfaces, adjustable pore sizes and good biocompatibility. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems have become a research direction for many scientists. With the active target factionalized, scientists could deliver drug carriers into cancer cells successfully. However, drugs in cancer cells could elicit drug resistance and induce cell exocytosis. Thus, the drug cannot be delivered to its pharmacological location, such as the nucleus. Therefore, binding the cell membrane and the nuclear target on the nanomaterial so that the anticancer drug can be delivered to its pharmacological action site is our goal. In this study, MSN-EuGd was synthesized by doping Eu3+ and Gd3+ during the synthesis of MSN. The surface of the material was then connected to the TAT peptide as the nucleus target for targeting the cancer nucleus and then loaded with the anticancer drug camptothecin (CPT). Then, the surface of MSN-EuGd was bonded to the hyaluronic acid as an active target and gatekeeper. With this system, it is possible and desirable to achieve dual imaging and dual targeting, as well as to deliver drugs to the cell nucleus under a hyaluronidase-controlled release. The experimental approach is divided into three parts. First, we conferred the material with fluorescent and magnetic dual-imaging property by doping Eu3+ and Gd3+ into the MSN. Second, modification of the cell membrane target molecule and the nucleus target molecule occurred on the surface of the nanoparticle, making the nanoparticle a target drug carrier. Third, the loading of drug molecules into the carrier gave the entire carrier a specific target profile and enabled the ability to treat cancer. In this study, we investigated the basic properties of the drug carrier, including physical properties, chemical properties, and in vitro tests. The result showed that we have successfully designed a drug delivery system that recognizes normal cells and cancer cells and has good anticancer effects.

Project description:One of the most promising solutions to the current energy crisis is an efficient catalytic transformation of abundant low-cost renewable raw biomass into high-quality biofuel. Herein, a highly effective catalyst was constructed systematically for the selective synthesis of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) biofuel from biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) via green catalytic transfer hydrogenolysis (CTH) using a nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (N-CMK-1) decorated ruthenium (Ru)-based catalyst in i-propanol as hydrogen source. The structures and properties of different catalysts were characterized by different characterization techniques such as FTIR, XRD, N2-sorption, CO2-sorption, TGA, TEM, ICP-AES, CHNO analysis, and acid-base back titration. A complete HMF conversion with a high DMF yield of 88% was achieved under optimized reaction conditions. Regarding substrate conversion and product yield, the influence of reaction temperature, time, and hydrogen donors was thoroughly investigated. The nitrogen-promoted carbon support enhanced the dispersion of Ru due to the formation of appropriate basic site density which could efficiently promote the activation of alcohol hydroxyl in i-propanol and subsequent release of active hydrogen species. In the meantime, highly dispersed surface Ru nanoparticles (NPs) were beneficial for hydrogen transfer and activation of both carbonyl and hydroxyl groups in HMF. Moreover, Arrhenius kinetic analysis was studied by identifying 5-methyl furfural (5-MF) and 2,5-bishydroxymethylfuran (BHMF) as two key intermediates that dominate a distinct reaction pathway during hydrogenolysis of HMF to DMF via CTH. Furthermore, high stability without obvious loss of activity after three consecutive cycles was observed in a fabricated N-CMK-1 decorated Ru-based catalyst as a result of superior metal-support interaction and the mesoporous framework nature of the catalyst. These findings would not only offer a robust catalyst synthetic approach but also open a new avenue for the exploitation of biomass to specialty chemicals and advanced biofuels.
