Tropical Medicine in China: Bibliometric Analysis Based on Web of Science (2010-2019).

ABSTRACT:

Purpose

The current study quantitatively assessed research trends in tropical medicine in China via a bibliometric method, which used the Web of Science database to analyse the research-based literature related to tropical medicine published from 2010 to 2019.

Methods

Articles were analysed according to the output and research performance of institutes and countries that collaborated with China. Distribution of keywords was applied to evaluate research trends.

Results

Our findings showed that 3372 articles in the field of tropical medicine have been indexed under the Web of Science database during the past 10 years, indicating that studies pertaining to tropical medicine have been growing from 2010 to 2019. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) system, which published 549 articles on tropical medicine, may be considered as the flagship of tropical medicine in China. The United States ranked first in internationally collaborative articles with China. Furthermore, Parasite & Vectors, which published 707 papers, emerged as the top journal according to the number of publications.

Conclusions

This study highlights the key institutes and topics pertaining to tropical medicine research in China. Although there has been rapid progress in research on tropical medicine in China, some gaps still remain.

Project description:BackgroundWithin the past decade, Africa has faced several recurrent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease (EVD), including the 2014-2016 outbreak in West Africa and the recent 2018-2020 Kivu outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The study thus aimed at quantifying and mapping the scientific output of EVD research published within 2010-2020 though a bibliometric perspective.MethodsEVD-related publications from 2010 to 2020 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases by using the keywords 'Ebola', 'Ebola Virus Disease', 'Ebolas', and 'ebolavirus'. Biblioshiny software (using R-studio cloud) was used to categorise and evaluate authors', countries' and journals' contribution. VOSviewer was used for network visualisation.ResultsAccording to the used search strategy, a total of 3865 and 3848 EVD documents were published in WoS and Scopus, respectively. The average citation per document was 16.1 (WoS) and 16.3 (Scopus). The results show an overall increase in the publication trend within the study period. The leading countries in EVD research were the USA and UK, with over 100 papers in both databases, including Nigeria and South Africa. NIAID and CDC-USA were the most influential institutions, while "Infectious Diseases" and "Medicine" were the most decisive research fields. The most contributing authors included Feldmann H and Qiu XG with over 60 papers in each database, while Journal of Infectious Diseases was the most crucial journal. The most cited article was from Aylward et al. published in 2014, while recent years displayed a keyword focus on "double-blind", "efficacy", "ring vaccination" and "drug effect".ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis provides an updated historical perspective of progress in EVD research and has highlighted the role played by various stakeholders. However, the contribution of African countries and institutions is not sufficiently reflected, implying a need for increased funding and focus on EVD research for effective prevention and control.

Project description:BackgroundBone defects can be seen everywhere in the clinic, but it is still a challenge for clinicians. Bibliometrics tool CiteSpace is based on the principle of "co-citation analysis theory" to reveal new technologies, hotspots, and trends in the medical field. In this study, CiteSpace was used to perform co-citation analysis on authors, countries (regions) and institutions, journals and cited journals, authors and cited literature, as well as keywords to reveal leaders, cooperative institutions, and research hotspots of bone defects and predict development trends.MethodData related to bone defect from 1994 to 2019 were retrieved from the Web of Science core collection; then, we use Excel to construct an exponential function to predict the number of annual publications; conduct a descriptive analysis on the top 10 journals with the largest number of publications; and perform co-citation analysis on authors, countries (regions) and institutions, journals and cited journals, authors and cited reference, and keywords using CiteSpace V5.5 and use the Burst Detection Algorithm to perform analysis on the countries (regions) and institutions and keywords, as well as cluster the keywords using log-likelihood ratio.ResultsA total of 5193 studies were retrieved, and the number of annual publications of bone defects showed an exponential function Y = 1×10- 70e0.0829x (R2 = 0.9778). The high-yield author was Choi Seong-Ho at Yonsei University in South Korea. The high-yielding countries were the USA and Germany, and the high-yielding institutions were the Sao Paulo University and China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences which were the emerging research countries and institutions. The research results were mainly published in the fields of dentistry, bone, and metabolism. Among them, the Journal of Dental Research and Journal of Bone and Mineral Research were high-quality journals that report bone defect research, but the most cited journal was the Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. Hot keywords were regeneration, repair, in vitro, bone regeneration, reconstruction, and graft. The keywords that were strongly cited in 2010-2019 were transportation, osteogenic differentiation, proliferation, and biomaterials. After 2018, proliferation, osteogenic differentiation, stromal cells, transmission, and mechanical properties have become new vocabulary. The drug delivery, vascularization, osteogenic differentiation and biomaterial properties of bone defects were expected to be further studied.ConclusionThe application of CiteSpace can reveal the leaders, cooperating institutions and research hotspots of bone defects and provide references for new technologies and further research directions.

Project description:ObjectiveIn this study, the current state of research on traditional Mongolian medicine (TMM) through a bibliometric analysis of research documents located in the Web of Science (WoS) database was assessed.MethodsThe WoS database was searched on September 2021 with the keywords "traditional Mongolian medicine." Publications on TMM scientific research were included in this study, without any language limitations. Bibliometric data from such publications were retrieved from the WoS database. Full records with cited reference lists were descriptively analyzed. To assess trends in TMM research topics, authors' keywords were analyzed. A thematic evolution map based on coword analysis was suggested. To analyze research networks among co-authors, affiliations, or countries of the authors, collaboration networks were evaluated. The Bibliometrix R package (3.1) was used for the analysis.ResultsA total of 234 scientific publications were included in the analysis. The top three countries of origin of the corresponding authors were China (n = 153), Japan (n = 28), and South Korea (n = 9). The top three relevant affiliations of the authors in the included publications were "Inner Mongolia Medical University," "Inner Mongolia University of Nationalities," and "National University of Mongolia." "Flavonoids," "cytotoxicity," "NMR," and "Tibetan medicine" were the most frequently used keywords in the included documents. Most publications focused on the chemical analysis and mechanism of effects of Mongolian herbal medications. There were few publications on nonpharmacological interventions such as bloodletting or TMM diagnostics, which should be promoted in future publications.ConclusionThere were only a limited number of publications on TMM identified through a search of the WoS database, using the keywords "Traditional Mongolian medicine." More improved strategy for searching for TMM publications must be established. Research publications on TMM, especially regarding nonpharmacological interventions, need to be promoted. In addition, collaboration with researchers worldwide needs to be encouraged in the future.

Project description:Abstract Background: Although many publications in diabetic retinopathy (DR) have been reported, there is no bibliometric analysis. Purpose: To perform a bibliometric analysis in the field of diabetic retinopathy (DR) research, to characterize the current international status of DR research, to identify the most effective factors involved in this field, and to explore research hotspots in DR research. Methods: Based on the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), a bibliometric analysis was conducted to investigate the publication trends in research related to DR. Knowledge maps were constructed by VOSviewer v.1.6.10 to visualize the publications, the distribution of countries, international collaborations, author productivity, source journals, cited references and keywords, and research hotspots in this field. Results: In total, 11,839 peer-reviewed papers were retrieved on DR from 2010 to 2019, and the annual research output increased with time. The United States ranks highest among countries with the most publications. The most active institution is the University of Melbourne. Wong, TY contributed the largest number of publications in this field. Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science was the most prolific journal in DR research. The top-cited references mainly investigated the use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) medications in the management of DR, and the keywords formed 6 clusters:1. pathogenesis of DR;2. epidemiology and risk factors for DR;3. treatments for DR;4. screening of DR;5. histopathology of DR; and6. diagnostic methods for DR. Discussion: With the improvement of living standard, DR has gradually become one of the important causes of blindness, and has become a hot spot of public health research in many countries. The application of deep learning and artificial intelligence in diabetes screening and anti-VEGF medications in the management of DR have been the research hotspots in recent 10 years. Conclusions: Based on data extracted from the WoSCC, this study provides a broad view of the current status and trends in DR research and may provide clinicians and researchers with insight into DR research and valuable information to identify potential collaborators and partner institutions and better predict their dynamic directions.

Project description:Background: Antimicrobial resistance is a serious public health problem that has become a global threat. Special attention should be given to polymyxins (polymyxin B and colistin) which, since their reintroduction into clinical practice, are considered "last resort" drugs. The objective of this study is to perform a bibliometric analysis of scientific research on polymyxin resistance. Methods: Scopus was used to retrieve documents relevant to polymyxin resistance from 2010 to 2019. Data was exported to Microsoft Excel for table presentation. SciVal was used for volume and citation analysis as well as collaboration patterns. Also, we extracted data regarding the top documents, authors, countries, institutions, and the metrics of journals. VantagePoint and VOSviewer were used for geographical distribution of worldwide research and keyword co-occurrence analysis, respectively. Results: A total of 1,409 documents were retrieved. The retrieved documents received 25.0 citations per document. Articles (73.88%) and letters (18.09%) were the most frequent types of documents. During 2010-2019, there was a significant growth in publications (p-value < 0.001). The received citations were 35,209 with a peak in 2016 (11,250 citations). China and the United States led the scientific production with 299 (21.2%) and 238 (16.9%) publications, respectively. Little or no contribution came from central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America. Chinese institutions have caused the greatest impact, with University of Zhejiang (China) being the most prolific institution on the subject (88 documents). In terms of the most productive journals, Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy ranked first with 196 (13.9%) documents. Most of the documents were published in quartile one journals and only had national collaboration (43.2%). Analysis of keyword co-occurrence revealed that research on polymyxin resistance during the last decade has focused on its relationship with public health, pharmacology, and genetics. Conclusion: The number of documents on polymyxin resistance has increased significantly in the recent years, with a steep growth from 2016 onwards. China and the United States led the scientific production. Most of the documents were published in high-quality journals. Greater joint efforts and more contribution from central Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Latin America are still needed to tackle this global problem.

Project description:Objective The extent, range, and nature of available research in the field of herbal therapies for osteoarthritis (OA) have not been systematically analyzed. This study aimed to map the literature available on herbal therapies for OA and identify global hotspots and trends in this field. Methods Studies on herbal therapies for OA published between 2004 and 2022 were searched from the Web of Science Core Collection. Microsoft Excel, SPSS Statistics, and CiteSpace software were used to analyze and visualize the quantity and citations of publications, and the research hotspots and trends in research on herbal therapies for OA. Results A total of 1649 publications mainly from 76 countries/regions and 270 institutions were included in this study. From 2004 to 2022, there is an upward trend in the publications of herbal therapies for OA. China ranked first in the number of publications (n = 568, 34.45%), followed by the USA (n = 353, 21.41%), South Korea (n = 187, 11.34%), Germany (n = 85, 5.15%), and England (n = 79, 4.79%). Kyung Hee University (n = 46), Xianxiang Liu (n = 25), and Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine (n = 74) were the most prolific affiliation, author, and journal, respectively. Felson DT (n = 185) and Arthritis and Rheumatism (n = 1173) held the record for the most cited papers by an author and journal, respectively. Currently, the hot keywords in the field of herbal therapies for OA include knee OA, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), differentiation, rosa canina, inflammation, oxidative stress, stem cell, and regenerative medicine. The emerging research trends in herbal therapies for OA are herbal medicinal product, chronic knee pain, mesenchymal stem cell, and clinical pharmacology. Conclusions Research on herbal therapies for OA is flourishing, but communication among countries/regions should be strengthened. Current research on herbal therapies for OA mainly focuses on knee OA, TCM, differentiation, rosa canina, inflammation, oxidative stress, stem cell, and regenerative medicine. The research frontiers are herbal medicinal product, chronic knee pain, mesenchymal stem cell, and clinical pharmacology.

Project description:BackgroundWith high morbidity and mortality, cardiopathy is a major component of cardiovascular disease, causing a huge burden of disease to public health worldwide. In recent years, research on acupuncture treatment of cardiopathies has been increasing. However, no bibliometric analysis has been conducted to systematically describe the research progress and hotspots in this field. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a bibliometric analysis of the relevant literature to explore the current status and future development of acupuncture for cardiopathies.MethodsThe Web of Science (WoS) Core Collection Database was searched for literature related to acupuncture therapies for cardiopathies from 2011 to 2021. Using CiteSpace 5.8 R3, cooperation network diagrams of authors, institutions, countries and journals, keyword co-occurrences, and clustering were performed and analyzed.ResultsA total of 321 studies were included. Overall, the number of annual publications increased yearly. These publications came from 31 countries or regions, of which China and the United States made the greatest contributions. In total, 333 authors from 258 institutions participated in this field, and Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Professor Fanrong Liang were the most published institution and author, respectively. Evidence-based Complementary and Alternative Medicine published the largest number of articles, and CIRCULATION was the most commonly cited journal. Based on co-occurrences and cluster analysis of 257 keywords, three research frontiers and hotspots were identified: acupuncture for blood pressure regulation, acupuncture for coronary heart disease, and acupuncture for regulation of heart rate. In these three research frontiers, the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and autonomic nervous system (ANS) are the most popular mechanisms.ConclusionA stable development trend has formed in this field. Further research should focus on the role of acupuncture therapies in the treatment of hypertension or hypertensive heart disease, coronary heart disease, and arrhythmia based on the mechanisms related to the RVLM and ANS.

Project description:BackgroundThe past two decades have seen a large increase in investment in global public health research. There is a need for increased coordination and accountability, particularly in understanding where funding is being allocated and who has capacity to perform research. In this paper, we aim to assess global, regional, national and sub-national capacity for public health research and how it is changing over time in different parts of the world.MethodsTo allow comparisons of regions, countries and universities/research institutes over time, we relied on Web of Science(TM) database and used Hirsch (h) index based on 5-year-periods (h5). We defined articles relevant to public health research with 98% specificity using the combination of search terms relevant to public health, epidemiology or meta-analysis. Based on those selected papers, we computed h5 for each country of the world and their main universities/research institutes for these 5-year time periods: 1996-2000, 2001-2005 and 2006-2010. We computed h5 with a 3-year-window after each time period, to allow citations from more recent years to accumulate. Among the papers contributing to h5-core, we explored a topic/disease under investigation, "instrument" of health research used (eg, descriptive, discovery, development or delivery research); and universities/research institutes contributing to h5-core.ResultsGlobally, the majority of public health research has been conducted in North America and Europe, but other regions (particularly Eastern Mediterranean and South-East Asia) are showing greater improvement rate and are rapidly gaining capacity. Moreover, several African nations performed particularly well when their research output is adjusted by their gross domestic product (GDP). In the regions gaining capacity, universities are contributing more substantially to the h-core publications than other research institutions. In all regions of the world, the topics of articles in h-core are shifting from communicable to non-communicable diseases (NCDs). There is also a trend of reduction in "discovery" research and increase in "delivery" research.ConclusionFunding agencies and research policy makers should recognise nations where public health research capacity is increasing. These countries are worthy of increased investment in order to further increase the production of high quality local research and continue to develop their research capacity. Similarly, universities that contribute substantially to national research capacity should be recognised and supported. Biomedical journals should also take notice to ensure equity in peer-review process and provide researchers from all countries an equal opportunity to publish high-quality research and reduce financial barriers to accessing these journals.
