Emission Intensity Readout of Ion-Selective Electrodes Operating under an Electrochemical Trigger.

ABSTRACT: We report for the first time on in situ transduction of electrochemical responses of ion-selective electrodes, operating under non-zero-current conditions, to emission change signals. The proposed novel-type PVC-based membrane comprises a dispersed redox and emission active ion-to-electron transducer. The electrochemical trigger applied induces a redox process of the transducer, inducing ion exchange between the membrane and the solution, resulting also in change of its emission spectrum. It is shown that electrochemical signals recorded for ion-selective electrodes operating under voltammetric/coulometric conditions correlate with emission intensity changes recorded in the same experiments. Moreover, the proposed optical readout offers extended linear response range compared to electrical signals recorded in voltammetric or coulometric mode.

3D-Drawn Supports for Ion-Selective Electrodes.

Project description:A new concept of easy to make, potentially disposable potentiometric sensors is presented. A thermoprocessable carbon black-loaded, electronically conducting, polylactide polymer composite was used to prepare substrate electrodes of user's defined shape/arrangement applying a 3D pen in a hot melt process. Covering of the carbon black-loaded polylactide 3D-drawn substrate electrode with a PVC-based ion-selective membrane cocktail results in spontaneous formation of a zip-lock structure with a large contact area. Thus, obtained ion-selective electrodes offer sensors of excellent performance, including potential stability expressed by SD of the mean value of potential recorded equal to ±1.0 mV (n = 6) within one day and ±1.5 mV (n = 6) between five days. The approach offers also high device-to-device potential reproducibility: SD of mean value of E0 equal to ±1.5 mV (n = 5).

Ion-selective asymmetric carbon electrodes for enhanced capacitive deionization.

Project description:With the development of capacitive deionization technology, charge efficiency and electrosorption capacity have become some of the biggest technical bottlenecks. Asymmetric activated carbon electrodes with ion-selective functional groups inspired by membrane capacitive deionization were developed to conquer these issues. The deionization capacity increased from 11.0 mg g-1 to 23.2 mg g-1, and the charge efficiency increased from 0.54 to 0.84, due to ion-selective functional groups minimizing the co-ion effect. The charge efficiency and electrosorption capacity resulting from better wettability of these electrodes are effectively enhanced by grafting ion-selective functional groups, which are propitious to ion movement. In addition, asymmetric deionization capacitors show better cycling stability and higher desalination rates. These experimental results have demonstrated that the modification of the ion-selective (oxygen-containing) functional groups on the surfaces of activated carbon could greatly minimize the co-ion effects and increase the salt removal from the solution. These results have indicated that the ion-selective asymmetric carbon electrodes can promote well the development of deionization capacitors for practical desalination.

Nonequilibrium Anion Detection in Solid-Contact Ion-Selective Electrodes.

Project description:Low-cost and portable nitrate and phosphate sensors are needed to improve farming efficiency and reduce environmental and economic impact arising from the release of these nutrients into waterways. Ion selective electrodes (ISEs) could provide a convenient platform for detecting nitrate and phosphate, but existing ionophore-based nitrate and phosphate selective membrane layers used in ISEs are high cost, and ISEs using these membrane layers suffer from long equilibration time, reference potential drift, and poor selectivity. In this work, we demonstrate that constant current operation overcomes these shortcomings for ionophore-based anion-selective ISEs through a qualitatively different response mechanism arising from differences in ion mobility rather than differences in ion binding thermodynamics. We develop a theoretical treatment of phase boundary potential and ion diffusion that allows for quantitative prediction of electrode response under applied current. We also demonstrate that under pulsed current operation, we can create functional solid-contact ISEs using lower-cost molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). MIP-based nitrate sensors provide comparable selectivity against chloride to costlier ionophore-based sensors and exhibit >100,000 times higher selectivity against perchlorate. Likewise, MIP-based solid contact ion-selective electrode phosphate sensors operated under pulsed current provide competitive selectivity against chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, and carbonate anions. The theoretical treatment and conceptual demonstration of pulsed-current ISE operation we report will inform the development of new materials for membrane layers in ISEs based on differences in ion mobility and will allow for improved ISE sensor designs.

Ion-Selective Electrodes Based on Hydrophilic Ionophore-Modified Nanopores.

Project description:We report the synthesis and analytical application of the first Cu2+ -selective synthetic ion channel based on peptide-modified gold nanopores. A Cu2+ -binding peptide motif (Gly-Gly-His) along with two additional functional thiol derivatives inferring cation-permselectivity and hydrophobicity was self-assembled on the surface of gold nanoporous membranes comprising of about 5 nm diameter pores. These membranes were used to construct ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) with extraordinary Cu2+ selectivities, approaching six orders of magnitude over certain ions. Since all constituents are immobilized to a supporting nanoporous membrane, their leaching, that is a ubiquitous problem of conventional ionophore-based ISEs was effectively suppressed.

Quantifying Interfacial Ion Transfer at Operating Potassium-Insertion Battery Electrodes within Highly Concentrated Aqueous Solutions.

Project description:Electrode/electrolyte interfacial ion transfer is a fundamental process occurring during insertion-type redox reactions at battery electrodes. The rate at which ions move into and out of the electrode, as well as at interphase structures, directly impacts the power performance of the battery. However, measuring and quantifying these ion transfer phenomena can be difficult, especially at high electrolyte concentrations as found in batteries. Herein, we report a scanning electrochemical microscope method using a common ferri/ferrocyanide (FeCN) redox mediator dissolved in an aqueous electrolyte to track changes in alkali ions at high electrolyte concentrations (up to 3 mol dm-3). Using voltammetry at a platinum microelectrode, we observed a reversible E1/2 shift of ∼60 mV per decade change in K+ concentrations. The response showed high stability in sequential measurements and similar behavior in other aqueous electrolytes. From there, we used the same FeCN mediator to position the microelectrode at the surface of a potassium-insertion electrode. We demonstrate tracking of local changes in the K+ concentration during insertion and deinsertion processes. Using a 2D axisymmetric, finite element model, we further estimate the effective insertion rates. These developments enable characterization of a key parameter for improving batteries, the interfacial ion transfer kinetics, and future work may show mediators appropriate for molar concentrations in nonaqueous electrolytes and beyond.

Development of Flexible Ion-Selective Electrodes for Saliva Sodium Detection.

Project description:Saliva can be used for health monitoring with non-invasive wearable systems. Such devices, including electrochemical sensors, may provide a safe, fast, and cost-efficient way of detecting target ions. Although salivary ions are known to reflect those in blood, no available clinical device can detect essential ions directly from saliva. Here, we introduce an all-solid-state, flexible film sensor that allows highly accurate detection of sodium levels in saliva, comparable to those in blood. The wireless film sensor system can successfully measure sodium ions from a small volume of infants' saliva (<400 µL), demonstrating its potential as a continuous health monitor. This study includes the structural characterization and error analysis of a carbon/elastomer-based ion-selective electrode and a reference electrode to confirm the signal reliability. The sensor, composed of a pair of the electrodes, shows good sensitivity (58.9 mV/decade) and selectivity (log K = -2.68 for potassium), along with a broad detection range of 5 × 10-5 ≈ 1 M with a low detection limit of 4.27 × 10-5 M. The simultaneous comparison between the film sensor and a commercial electrochemical sensor demonstrates the accuracy of the flexible sensor and a positive correlation in saliva-to-blood sodium levels. Collectively, the presented study shows the potential of the wireless ion-selective sensor system for a non-invasive, early disease diagnosis with saliva.

Optimization of Ruthenium Dioxide Solid Contact in Ion-Selective Electrodes.

Project description:Ruthenium dioxide occurs in two morphologically varied structures: anhydrous and hydrous form; both of them were studied in the scope of this work and applied as mediation layers in ion-selective electrodes. The differences between the electrochemical properties of those two materials underlie their diverse structure and hydration properties, which was demonstrated in the paper. One of the main differences is the occurrence of structural water in RuO2•xH2O, which creates a large inner surface available for ion transport and was shown to be a favorable feature in the context of designing potentiometric sensors. Both materials were examined with SEM microscope, X-ray diffractometer, and contact angle microscope, and the results revealed that the hydrous form can be characterized as a porous structure with a smaller crystallite size and more hydrophobic properties contrary to the anhydrous form. Potentiometric and electrochemical tests carried out on designed GCD/RuO2/K+-ISM and GCD/RuO2•xH2O/K+-ISM electrodes proved that the loose porous microstructure with chemically bounded water, which is characteristic for the hydrous form, ensures the high electrical capacitance of electrodes (up to 1.2 mF) with consequently more stable potential (with the potential drift of 0.0015 mV/h) and a faster response (of a few seconds).

Robust fabrication of nanomaterial-based all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes.

Project description:Currently, nanomaterial-based all-solid-state ion-selective electrodes (ASS-ISEs) have become attractive tools for ion sensing in environmental and biological applications. However, nanomaterial solid contact can easily fall off the electrode surface owing to poor adhesion. This poses serious limits to the wide use of these sensors. Herein, we report a general and facile method for the robust fabrication of nanomaterial-based ASS-ISEs. It is based on the silver-based conductive adhesive (CA) with excellent electronic conductivity and strong adhesion ability as the binder to construct nanomaterial-based solid contact. The solid-contact Ca2+-ISE based on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is chosen as a model. The proposed electrode based on CA-SWCNTs shows a linear response in the concentration range of 10-6 to 10-3 M with a slope of 25.96 ± 0.36 mV per decade and a detection limit of 1.7 × 10-7 M. In addition, the CA-SWCNT-based Ca2+-ISE exhibits an improved potential stability and reduced water film compared to the coated-wire ISE. Above all, experiments also show that the CA-SWCNT-based electrode exhibits nearly the same electrochemical characteristics as the classical only SWCNT-based electrode in term of resistance, capacitance and potential stability. We believe that CA-nanomaterial-based solid contacts provide an appealing substitute for traditional solid contacts based on nanomaterials.
