Sphingomyelin synthase related protein (SMSr) has no SM synthase activity but has ceramide phosphorylethanolamine (CPE) synthase activity in vitro. Although SMSr is ubiquitously expressed in all tested tissues, the CPE levels in most mammalian tissues or cells are extremely low or undetectable.
