Examination of the Butler Equation for the Surface Tension of Liquid Mixtures.

ABSTRACT: The classical Butler equation used to describe surface tension and the surface composition of liquid mixtures is revisited. A straightforward derivation is presented, separating basic chemical thermodynamics and assumptions proper to Butler's model. This model is shown to conceal an approximation not recognized by other researchers. The shortcoming identified consists of not allowing surface standard values to vary with surface tension by virtue of the changing composition. A more rigorous equation is derived and shown to yield the Butler equation in case of incompressible surface phases. It is concluded that the Butler equation slightly overestimates ideal surface tensions. Butler's surface-phase concentrations of the surface-active component are also slightly overestimated in the surface-active component dilute range, being just underestimated at higher concentrations. Despite this, Butler's model stands as a very good standard due to its versatility.

Direct Correlation of Surface Tension and Surface Composition of Ionic Liquid Mixtures-A Combined Vacuum Pendant Drop and Angle-Resolved X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Study.

Project description:We investigated the surface tension and surface composition of various mixtures of the two ionic liquids (ILs) 1-methyl-3-octyl-imidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C8C1Im][PF6] and 1,3-bis(polyethylene glycol)imidazolium iodide [(mPEG2)2Im]I in the temperature range from 230 to 370 K under ultraclean vacuum conditions. The surface tension was measured using a newly developed apparatus, and the surface composition was determined by angle-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ARXPS). In the pure ILs, the alkyl chains of [C8C1Im][PF6] and the PEG chains of [(mPEG2)2Im]I are enriched at the IL/vacuum interface. In the mixtures, a strong selective surface enrichment of the alkyl chains occurs, which is most pronounced at low [C8C1Im][PF6] contents. For the surface tension, strong deviations from an ideal mixing behaviour take place. By applying a simple approach based on the surface composition of the mixtures as deduced from ARXPS, we are able to predict and reproduce the experimentally measured temperature-dependent surface tension values with astonishingly high accuracy.

Pressure-Surface Tension-Temperature Equation of State for <i>n</i>-Alkanes.

Project description:Herein, the geometric similitude concept is applied to propose a cubic equation that relates surface tension, saturation pressure, and temperature for n-alkanes. The input properties for each fluid are the molecular mass, pressure, temperature, and compressibility factor at the critical point. The model is applied to temperatures below 0.93·T c (critical point temperature). A total of 2429 surface tension values have been selected for 32 n-alkanes. The parameters of the model have been obtained with a fit of the surface tension values for 19 pure n-alkanes that are randomly chosen. Then, it is tested for the other 13 pure n-alkanes and used to predict the surface tension for 11 binary and 4 ternary mixtures. These predictions are compared with the reported experimental data. For pure n-alkanes, the overall absolute average deviation is 2.4%, including the correlation and testing sets. No additional adjustable coefficients are used for mixtures, yielding an overall absolute average deviation of 2.98% for the binary systems and 7.97% for the ternary ones. The results show that the model is accurate enough for predictions and that the highest deviations are due to the lack of agreement in the values of surface tension of pure fluids obtained from different sources.

Assessment of a Parachor Model for the Surface Tension of Binary Mixtures.

Project description:We compiled an experimental database for the surface tension of binary mixtures containing a wide variety of fluids, from the chemical classes (water, alcohols, amines, ketones, linear and branched alkanes, naphthenes, aromatics, refrigerants, and cryogens). The resulting data set includes 65 pure fluids and 154 binary pairs with a total of 8205 points. We used this database to test the performance of a parachor model for the surface tension of binary mixtures. The model uses published correlations to determine the parachors of the pure fluids. The model has a single, constant binary interaction parameter for each pair that was found by fitting experimental mixture data. It can be also used in a predictive mode when the interaction parameters are set to zero. We present detailed comparisons on the performance of the model for both cases. In general, the parachor model in a predictive mode without fitted interaction parameters can predict the surface tension of binary mixtures of non-polar mixtures such as linear and branched alkanes, linear and branched alkanes with naphthenes, aromatics with aromatics, aromatics with naphthenes, and mixtures of linear alkanes of similar sizes with an average absolute percentage deviation of about 3 % or less. Polar mixtures of halocarbons with other halocarbons and also polar/nonpolar mixtures of alkanes with halocarbons could be modeled with an average absolute deviation of less than 0.35 mN·m-1 with the use of a binary interaction parameter. The parachor model even with a fitted binary interaction parameter performs poorly for mixtures of water and organic compounds and is not recommended.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s10765-023-03216-z.

Surface Chemistry Enhancements for the Tunable Super-Liquid Repellency of Low-Surface-Tension Liquids.

Project description:Super-hydrophobic, super-oleo(amphi)phobic, and super-omniphobic materials are universally important in the fields of science and engineering. Despite rapid advancements, gaps of understanding still exist between each distinctive wetting state. The transition of super-hydrophobicity to super-(oleo-, amphi-, and omni-)phobicity typically requires the use of re-entrant features. Today, re-entrant geometry induced super-(amphi- and omni-)phobicity is well-supported by both experiments and theory. However, owing to geometrical complexities, the concept of re-entrant geometry forms a dogma that limits the industrial progress of these unique states of wettability. Moreover, a key fundamental question remains unanswered: are extreme surface chemistry enhancements able to influence super-liquid repellency? Here, this was rigorously tested via an alternative pathway that does not require explicit designer re-entrant features. Highly controllable and tunable vertical network polymerization and functionalization were used to achieve fluoroalkyl densification on nanoparticles. For the first time, relative fluoro-functionalization densities are quantitatively tuned and correlated to super-liquid repellency performance. Step-wise tunable super-amphiphobic nanoparticle films with a Cassie-Baxter state (contact angle of >150° and sliding angle of <10°) against various liquids is demonstrated. This was tested down to very low surface tension liquids to a minimum of ca. 23.8 mN/m. Such findings could eventually lead to the future development of super-(amphi)omniphobic materials that transcend the sole use of re-entrant geometry.

Surface Tension of Liquid Organic Acids: An Artificial Neural Network Model.

Project description:An artificial neural network model is proposed for the surface tension of liquid organic fatty acids covering a wide temperature range. A set of 2051 data collected for 98 acids (including carboxylic, aliphatic, and polyfunctional) was considered for the training, testing, and prediction of the resulting network model. Different architectures were explored, with the final choice giving the best results, in which the input layer has the reduced temperature (temperature divided by the critical point temperature), boiling temperature, and acentric factor as an independent variable, a 41-neuron hidden layer, and an output layer consisting of one neuron. The overall absolute percentage deviation is 1.33%, and the maximum percentage deviation is 14.53%. These results constitute a major improvement over the accuracy obtained using corresponding-states correlations from the literature.

Surface-Tension-Confined Channel with Biomimetic Microstructures for Unidirectional Liquid Spreading.

Project description:Unidirectional liquid spreading without energy input is of significant interest for the broad applications in diverse fields such as water harvesting, drop transfer, oil-water separation and microfluidic devices. However, the controllability of liquid motion and the simplification of manufacturing process remain challenges. Inspired by the peristome of Nepenthes alata, a surface-tension-confined (STC) channel with biomimetic microcavities was fabricated facilely through UV exposure photolithography and partial plasma treatment. Perfect asymmetric liquid spreading was achieved by combination of microcavities and hydrophobic boundary, and the stability of pinning effect was demonstrated. The influences of structural features of microcavities on both liquid spreading and liquid pinning were investigated and the underlying mechanism was revealed. We also demonstrated the spontaneous unidirectional transport of liquid in 3D space and on tilting slope. In addition, through changing pits arrangement and wettability pattern, complex liquid motion paths and microreactors were realized. This work will open a new way for liquid manipulation and lab-on-chip applications.

Sorting Liquid Droplets by Surface Tension Using Devices with Quasi-Superamphiphobic Coatings.

Project description:Any solid surface with homogenous or varying surface energy can spontaneously show variable wettability to liquid droplets with different or identical surface tensions. Here, we studied a glass slide sprayed with a quasi-superamphiphobic coating consisting of a hexane suspension of perfluorosilane-coated nanoparticles. Four areas on the glass slide with a total length of 7.5 cm were precisely tuned via ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and droplets with surface tensions of 72.1-33.9 mN m-1 were categorized at a tilting angle of 3°. Then, we fabricated a U-shaped device sprayed with the same coating and used it to sort the droplets more finely by rolling them in the guide groove of the device to measure their total rolling time and distance. We found a correlation between ethanol content/surface tension and rolling time/distance, so we used the same device to estimate the alcoholic strength of Chinese liquors and to predict the surface tension of ethanol aqueous solutions.

Solid surface tension measured by a liquid drop under a solid film.

Project description:We show that a drop of liquid a few hundred microns in diameter placed under a solid, elastic, thin film (∼10 μm thick) causes it to bulge by tens of microns. The deformed shape is governed by equilibrium of tensions exerted by the various interfaces and the solid film, a form of Neumann's triangle. Unlike Young's equation, which specifies the contact angles at the junction of two fluids and a (rigid) solid, and is fundamentally underdetermined, both tensions in the solid film can be determined here if the liquid-vapor surface tension is known independently. Tensions in the solid film have a contribution from elastic stretch and a constant residual component. The residual component, extracted by extrapolation to films of vanishing thickness and supported by analysis of the elastic deformation, is interpreted as the solid-fluid surface tension, demonstrating that compliant thin-film structures can be used to measure solid surface tensions.

Tension at the surface: which phase is more important, liquid or vapor?

Project description:Tension at the surface is a most fundamental physicochemical property of a liquid surface. The concept of surface tension has widespread implications in numerous natural, engineering and biomedical processes. Research to date has been largely focused on the liquid side; little attention has been paid to the vapor--the other side of the surface, despite over 100 years of study. However, the question remains as to whether the vapor plays any role, and to what extent it affects the surface tension of the liquid. Here we show a systematic study of the effect of vapor on the surface tension and in particular, a surprising observation that the vapor, not the liquid, plays a dominant role in determining the surface tension of a range of common volatile organic solutions. This is in stark contrast to results of common surfactants where the concentration in the liquid plays the major role. We further confirmed our results with a modified adsorption isotherm and molecular dynamics simulations, where highly structured, hydrogen bonded networks, and in particular a solute depletion layer just beneath the Gibbs dividing surface, were revealed.

Density, Viscosity and Surface Tension of Binary Mixtures of 1-Butyl-1-Methylpyrrolidinium Tricyanomethanide with Benzothiophene.

Project description:The effects of temperature and composition on the density and viscosity of pure benzothiophene and ionic liquid (IL), and those of the binary mixtures containing the IL 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidynium tricyanomethanide ([BMPYR][TCM] + benzothiophene), are reported at six temperatures (308.15, 318.15, 328.15, 338.15, 348.15 and 358.15) K and ambient pressure. The temperature dependences of the density and viscosity were represented by an empirical second-order polynomial and by the Vogel-Fucher-Tammann equation, respectively. The density and viscosity variations with compositions were described by polynomials. Excess molar volumes and viscosity deviations were calculated and correlated by Redlich-Kister polynomial expansions. The surface tensions of benzothiophene, pure IL and binary mixtures of ([BMPYR][TCM] + benzothiophene) were measured at atmospheric pressure at four temperatures (308.15, 318.15, 328.15 and 338.15) K. The surface tension deviations were calculated and correlated by a Redlich-Kister polynomial expansion. The temperature dependence of the interfacial tension was used to evaluate the surface entropy, the surface enthalpy, the critical temperature, the surface energy and the parachor for pure IL. These measurements have been provided to complete information of the influence of temperature and composition on physicochemical properties for the selected IL, which was chosen as a possible new entrainer in the separation of sulfur compounds from fuels. A qualitative analysis on these quantities in terms of molecular interactions is reported. The obtained results indicate that IL interactions with benzothiophene are strongly dependent on packing effects and hydrogen bonding of this IL with the polar solvent.
