Relation of Physical Activity Level to Postural Balance in Obese and Overweight Spanish Adult Males: A Cross-Sectional Study.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of physical activity level on postural control in obese and overweight Spanish adult males. Forty-three males aged between 25 and 60 years old were included. Anthropometric, body composition, and physical activity variables were assessed, and postural control was evaluated using the Sensory Organization Test. No correlation was found between the level of physical activity and postural control, assessed by the Sensory Organization Test within the whole sample. However, within the group with a higher total fat mass percentage, non-sedentary individuals presented improved scores on the somatosensory organization test when compared to sedentary individuals (96.9 ± 1.8 vs. 95.4 ± 1.2; p < 0.05) and poorer scores on the composite equilibrium score (73.4 ± 7.2 vs. 79.2 ± 6.9; p < 0.05). The altered integration of somatosensory inputs most likely affects the tuning, sequencing, and execution of balance strategies in sedentary men with a high total fat mass percentage.

Project description:BackgroundObservational studies suggest links between reduced serum 25(OH)D concentration and increased cardiometabolic disease risk. However, these studies provide limited evidence of causation, with few conclusive randomised controlled trials (RCT) having been carried out to date. This RCT investigated the effect of vitamin D3 supplementation on vascular function and cardiometabolic disease risk markers, in 55 healthy males aged 18-65 years with plasma 25(OH)D concentration <75 mol L-1 and body mass index ≥24.9 kg m-2 .MethodsParticipants were assigned to consume 125 µg day-1 (5000 IU day-1 ) vitamin D3 or placebo for 8 weeks. Blood samples and vascular function measures were obtained at baseline, as well as at weeks 4 and 8. The primary outcome was arterial stiffness, an indicator of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk, assessed by pulse wave velocity. Biomarkers of CVD risk, insulin resistance and endothelial function were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.ResultsDaily oral intake of 125 µg supplemental vitamin D3 led to a significant improvement in plasma 25(OH)D concentrations over the 8-week intervention in the vitamin D group compared to the change in the placebo group (p ˂ 0.001). In the vitamin D group, the baseline mean ± SD 25(OH)D concentration was 38.4 ± 15.9 and this increased to 72.8 ± 16.1 nmol L-1 after 8 weeks of supplementation. The intervention had no effect on arterial stiffness, as measured by pulse wave velocity, although vitamin D3 supplementation did lead to a decrease in mean ± SD brachial pulse pressure from baseline to 8 weeks of -2.9 ± 3.4 mmHg (p = 0.027) in the vitamin D group compared to the same period in the placebo group. The intervention had no effect on the remaining cardiometabolic parameters.ConclusionsOverall, treatment significantly improved brachial pulse pressure but no other cardiometabolic disease risk markers. To follow on from this pilot RCT, future large-scale clinical trials over longer durations may offer further insights.

Project description:BackgroundThe oxidative balance score (OBS) combines diverse dietary components with lifestyle factors to comprehensively evaluate oxidative stress. The investigation focuses on the link between the OBS and mortality outcomes, including cardiovascular and all-cause deaths, in overweight and obese individuals.MethodsThe analysis utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), covering the period from 1999 to 2018. Mortality information, categorized into all-cause and cardiovascular deaths, was gathered from the National Death Index (NDI). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, along with multivariate Cox regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) modeling, were utilized to explore the link between OBS and mortality risks. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were used to assess the robustness of the results and possible effect modifiers. Mediation analysis identifies pathways through which the independent variable affects the dependent variable.ResultsIn this study, 26,219 participants with overweight or obesity were enrolled, with an average age of 49.8 ± 17.4 years. During a median follow-up duration of 115 months, 2,239 participants (8.5%) died, including 837 (3.2%) from cardiovascular disease. According to Kaplan-Meier analysis, mortality was highest among participants in the lowest OBS quartile (Q1) and lowest among those in the highest quartile (Q4). Participants in the fourth OBS quartile experienced a 21.7% decrease in the risk of mortality from all causes and a 29.5% decrease in cardiovascular mortality risk, according to fully adjusted results, compared to those in the first quartile. These results were validated through subgroup analyses. The analysis of RCS revealed a notable inverse association between OBS and mortality outcomes. Mediation analysis indicates that white blood cell count (WBC) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) serve as significant mediators in the association between OBS and mortality risk.ConclusionElevated levels of OBS were strongly linked to reduced potential for both cardiovascular and all-cause mortality among individuals who are overweight or obese.
