Graphitic Dots Combining Photophysical Characteristics of Organic Molecular Fluorophores and Inorganic Quantum Dots.

ABSTRACT: Thanks to their photophysical properties, both organic molecular fluorophores (MFs) and inorganic quantum dots (QDs) are extensively used for bioimaging applications. However, limitations such as photobleaching for the former or blinking, size, and toxicity for the latter still constitute a challenge for numerous applications. We report here that embedding MFs in graphitic carbon dots (GDs) results in fluorophores which entirely tackle this challenge. Characterized by ultranarrow, bright, and excitation-independent emission devoid of blinking and photobleaching, these hybrid-featured nanoparticles also demonstrate their unique photophysical performances at the single-nanoparticle scale, making them appealing candidates for bioimaging applications.

Photophysical Properties of Multilayer Graphene-Quantum Dots Hybrid Structures.

Project description:Photoelectrical and photoluminescent properties of multilayer graphene (MLG)-quantum dots (QD) hybrid structures have been studied. It has been shown that the average rate of transfer from QDs to the MLG can be estimated via photoinduced processes on the QDs' surfaces. A monolayer of CdSe QDs can double the photoresponse amplitude of multilayer graphene, without influencing its characteristic photoresponse time. It has been found that efficient charge or energy transfer from QDs to MLG with a rate higher than 3 × 108 s-1 strongly inhibits photoinduced processes on the QD surfaces and provides photostability for QD-based structures.

Combining Organic and Inorganic Wastes to Form Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:This paper reports a simple method to recycle plastic-bottle and Li-ion-battery waste in one process by forming valuable coordination polymers (metal-organic frameworks, MOFs). Poly(ethylene terephthalate) from plastic bottles was depolymerized to produce an organic ligand source (terephthalate), and Li-ion batteries were dissolved as a source of metals. By mixing both dissolution solutions together, selective precipitation of an Al-based MOF, known as MIL-53 in the literature, was observed. This material can be recovered in large quantities from waste and presents similar properties of purity and porosity to as-synthesis MIL-53. This work illustrates the opportunity to form hybrid porous materials by combining different waste streams, laying the foundations for an achievable integrated circular economy from different waste cycle treatments (for batteries and plastics).

Emission Recovery and Stability Enhancement of Inorganic Perovskite Quantum Dots.

Project description:Inorganic lead halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), especially red emission PQDs, are well-known to easily lose their luminescence emission with time, which shows from strong emission of fresh PQDs to no emission of aged PQDs. Here, we demonstrate that trioctylphosphine (TOP) can effectively and instantly recover the luminescence emission of aged red PQDs, making the "dead" PQDs "reborn". Furthermore, TOP also works to improve the emission intensity of freshly synthesized PQDs. In this process, TOP does not make any detectable structural changes to PQDs. Besides, TOP can effectively enhance the stability of PQDs against long-term storage, temperature, UV irradiation, and polar solvents. This unusual emission recovery and stability enhancement by TOP shall promote the understanding of particle surface conditions and the development of PQD devices.

Blinking characteristics of organic fluorophores for blink-based multiplexing.

Project description:Single-molecule fluorescence experiments have transformed our understanding of complex materials and biological systems. Whether single molecules are used to report on their nano-environment or provide for localization, understanding their blinking dynamics (i.e., stochastic fluctuations in emission intensity under continuous illumination) is paramount. We recently demonstrated another use for blinking dynamics called blink-based multiplexing (BBM), where individual emitters are classified using a single excitation laser based on blinking dynamics, rather than color. This study elucidates the structure-activity relationships governing BBM performance in a series of model rhodamine, BODIPY, and anthraquinone fluorophores that undergo different photo-physical and-chemical processes during blinking. Change point detection and multinomial logistic regression analyses show that BBM can leverage spectral fluctuations, electron and proton transfer kinetics, as well as photostability for molecular classification-even within the context of a shared blinking mechanism. In doing so, we demonstrate two- and three-color BBM with ≥ 93% accuracy using spectrally-overlapped fluorophores.

Water soluble cadmium selenide quantum dots for ultrasensitive detection of organic, inorganic and elemental mercury in biological fluids and live cells.

Project description:Mercury exists in organic, inorganic, and elemental forms; all of them are highly toxic. A sensor which could detect all forms of mercury below the permissible level in environmental and biological samples would be advantageous. A facile method to synthesize N-acetyl cysteine capped cadmium selenide quantum dots (CdSe QDs) with an emission at 554 nm was reported. CdSe QDs showed high sensitivity and selectivity toward Hg in aqueous media as well as biological fluids like simulated cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, and urine, and also in natural fluids like juices of tomato, sugarcane, and lime. The sensing mechanism is attributed to the interactions between Hg and CdSe QDs inducing fluorescence quenching. The limit of detection is 1.62, 0.75, and 1.27 ppb for organic, inorganic and elemental mercury, respectively, which is below WHO guidelines. The suitability of the sensor for estimating Hg in biological fluids was demonstrated by recovery experiments. Besides sensing, a two color cell imaging method was developed employing CdSe QDs and acridine orange. Using this method, the uptake of Hg in living cells was demonstrated.

Tuning the Optical Properties of Silicon Quantum Dots via Surface Functionalization with Conjugated Aromatic Fluorophores.

Project description:Silicon Quantum Dots (SQDs) have recently attracted great interest due to their excellent optical properties, low cytotoxicity, and ease of surface modification. The size of SQDs and type of ligand on their surface has a great influence on their optical properties which is still poorly understood. Here we report the synthesis and spectroscopic studies of three families of unreported SQDs functionalized by covalently linking to the aromatic fluorophores, 9-vinylphenanthrene, 1-vinylpyrene, and 3-vinylperylene. The results showed that the prepared functionalized SQDs had a highly-controlled diameter by HR-TEM, ranging from 1.7-2.1 nm. The photophysical measurements of the assemblies provided clear evidence for efficient energy transfer from the fluorophore to the SQD core. Fӧrster energy transfer is the likely mechanism in these assemblies. As a result of the photogenerated energy transfer process, the emission color of the SQD core could be efficiently tuned and its emission quantum efficiency enhanced. To demonstrate the potential application of the synthesized SQDs for bioimaging of cancer cells, the water-soluble perylene- and pyrene-capped SQDs were examined for fluorescent imaging of HeLa cells. The SQDs were shown to be of low cytotoxicity.

Graphitic Carbon Quantum Dots Modified Nickel Cobalt Sulfide as Cathode Materials for Alkaline Aqueous Batteries.

Project description:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a new class of emerging materials have gradually drawn researchers' concern in recent years. In this work, the graphitic CQDs are prepared through a scalable approach, achieving a high yield with more than 50%. The obtained CQDs are further used as structure-directing and conductive agents to synthesize novel N,S-CQDs/NiCo2S4 composite cathode materials, manifesting the enhanced electrochemical properties resulted from the synergistic effect of highly conductive N,S-codoped CQDs offering fast electronic transport and unique micro-/nanostructured NiCo2S4 microspheres with Faradaic redox characteristic contributing large capacity. Moreover, the nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO)/Fe2O3 composite anode materials exhibit ultrahigh specific capacity as well as significantly improved rate property and cycle performance originating from the high-capacity prism-like Fe2O3 hexahedrons tightly wrapped by highly conductive N-rGO. A novel alkaline aqueous battery assembled by these materials displays a specific energy (50.2 Wh kg-1), ultrahigh specific power (9.7 kW kg-1) and excellent cycling performance with 91.5% of capacity retention at 3 A g-1 for 5000 cycles. The present research offers a valuable guidance for the exploitation of advanced energy storage devices by the rational design and selection of battery/capacitive composite materials.

Characteristics of quantum dots phagocytosis by neutrophil granulocytes.

Project description:This article describes the main morphological and biochemical features of neutrophil granulocytes in the process of phagocytosis of two types of quantum dots (CdSe/ZnS-MPA and CdSe/CdSeZnS/ZnS-PTVP). This study is the first to observe the transfer of large aggregates of quantum dots through neutrophils. During this process the cells demonstrate high chemotactic activity. Furthermore, neutrophil pseudopodia underwent alterations during the early stages of phagocytosis. The findings demonstrated that the biochemical profile of neutrophils is practically identical after phagocytosis of both types of quantum dots, but differs significantly from neutrophil metabolism after bacterial phagocytosis.

Verification of Type-A and Type-B-HC Blinking Mechanisms of Organic-Inorganic Formamidinium Lead Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots by FLID Measurements.

Project description:Organic-inorganic halide perovskite nanocrystals or quantum dots (PQDs) are excellent candidates for optoelectronic applications, such as lasers, solar cells, light emitting diodes, and single photon sources. However, the potential applications of PQDs can expand once the photoluminescence, and in particular, the blinking behaviors of single PQDs are understood. Although the blinking of PQDs has been studied extensively recently, the underlying mechanism of the blinking behaviors is still under debate. In this study, we confirmed that type-A and type-B-HC (hot carrier) blinking, contributed to PQD blinking using their fluorescence lifetime intensity distribution (FLID). Type-B-HC blinking was experimentally confirmed for the first time for formamidinium based PQDs, and the simultaneous contributions of type-A and type-B blinking were clearly specified. Further, we related different FLID data to the ON/OFF time distribution as distinct features of different blinking types. We also emphasized that detection capability was crucial for correctly elucidating the blinking mechanism.
