Tunable High Refractive Index Polymer Hybrid and Polymer-Inorganic Nanocomposite Coatings.

ABSTRACT: Atomized spray plasma deposition (ASPD) provides a single-step, low-temperature, and dry approach for the preparation of high refractive index hybrid polymer or polymer-inorganic nanocomposite coatings. Refractive indices as high as 1.936 at 635 nm wavelength have been obtained for ASPD 4-bromostyrene/toluene-TiO₂ nanocomposite layers containing low titania loadings. Thin films with any desired refractive index up to 1.936 can be easily deposited onto a variety of substrates by varying the precursor mixture composition. ASPD overcomes disadvantages commonly associated with alternative fabrication methods for depositing high refractive index coatings (elevated temperatures, wet processes, UV curing steps, and much greater inorganic loadings).

Refractive index matched, nearly hard polymer colloids.

Project description:Refractive index matched particles serve as essential model systems for colloid scientists, providing nearly hard spheres to explore structure and dynamics. The poly(methyl methacrylate) latexes typically used are often refractive index matched by dispersing them in binary solvent mixtures, but this can lead to undesirable changes, such as particle charging or swelling. To avoid these shortcomings, we have synthesized refractive index matched colloids using polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) rather than as polymer latexes. The crucial difference is that these diblock copolymer nanoparticles consist of a single core-forming polymer in a single non-ionizable solvent. The diblock copolymer chosen was poly(stearyl methacrylate)-poly(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl methacrylate) (PSMA-PTFEMA), which self-assembles to form PTFEMA core spheres in n-alkanes. By monitoring scattered light intensity, n-tetradecane was found to be the optimal solvent for matching the refractive index of such nanoparticles. As expected for PISA syntheses, the diameter of the colloids can be controlled by varying the PTFEMA degree of polymerization. Concentrated dispersions were prepared, and the diffusion of the PSMA-PTFEMA nanoparticles as a function of volume fraction was measured. These diblock copolymer nanoparticles are a promising new system of transparent spheres for future colloidal studies.

Predicting refractive index of inorganic compounds using machine learning.

Project description:Refractive index (RI) is one of the most important optical properties of materials. Due to the high importance of this physical parameter, there has always been a demand to find a method that provides the most optimal estimation. In this research, we utilize experimentally measured RI values of 272 inorganic compounds to build a machine learning model capable of predicting the RI of materials with low computational cost. Considering the significant relationship between the band gap and RI, we select this parameter as a predictor. In addition to the band gap, the atomic properties related to the building elements of the compounds form our data set in this work. To find the most optimal model and set of suitable predictors, we examine our data in four categories with 1, 5, 10, and 21 features. In addition, we compare the predicted RIs of 6 different independent regression methods, namely, ordinary least squares (OLSR), Gaussian process (GPR), support vector (SVR), random forest (RFR), gradient boosted trees (GBTR), and extremely randomized trees regression(ERTR). We notice that ERTR predicts RI with the highest accuracy compared to other regression methods. The prediction strength of our model excels in empirical relations and provides accurate results for a wide range of RIs. Thus, we demonstrate the high potential of machine learning methods for evaluating the RI, especially when it comes to providing an estimation of a desired physical quantity.

Hybrid organic-inorganic coatings via electron transfer behaviour.

Project description:A novel method to functionalize the surface of inorganic coating by growing organic coating has been investigated based on microstructural interpretation, electrochemical assessment, and quantum chemical analysis. For this purpose, inorganic coating with magnesium aluminate, magnesium oxide, and titanium dioxide was prepared on magnesium alloy via plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), and, then, subsequent dip-coating method was used to tailor organic coating using diethyl-5-hydroxyisophthalate (DEIP) as organic molecules. The incorporation of TiO2 particles worked as a sealing agent to block the micro-defects which resulted mainly from the intense plasma sparks during PEO. In addition, such incorporation played an important role in enhancing the adhesion between inorganic and organic coatings. The use of DEIP as organic corrosion inhibitor resulted in a significant decrease in porosity of inorganic coating. Quantum chemical calculation was used to clarify the corrosion inhibition mechanism which was activated by introduction of DEIP. Thus, the electrochemical analysis based on potentiodynamic polarization and impedance spectroscopy tests in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution suggested that corrosion resistance of magnesium alloy sample was enhanced significantly due to a synergistic effect arising from the hybrid inorganic and organic coatings. This phenomenon was explained in relation to electron transfer behaviour between inorganic and organic coatings.

Composite GaN-C-Ga ("GaCN") Layers with Tunable Refractive Index.

Project description:This article describes novel composite thin films consisting of GaN, C, and Ga (termed "GaCN", as an analogue to BCN and other carbonitrides) as a prospective material for future optical applications. This is due to their tunable refractive index that depends on the carbon content. The composites are prepared by introducing alternating pulses of trimethylgallium (TMG) and ammonia (NH3) on silicon substrates to mimic an atomic layer deposition process. Because the GaCN material is hardly reported to the best of our knowledge, a comprehensive characterization is performed to investigate into its chemical nature, primarily to determine whether or not it exists as a single-phase material. It is revealed that GaCN is a composite, consisting of phase-segregated, nanoscale clusters of wurtzitic GaN polycrystals, in addition to inclusions of carbon, nitrogen, and gallium, which are chemically bonded into several forms, but not belonging to the GaN crystals itself. By varying the deposition temperature between 400 and 600 °C and the NH3 partial pressure between 0.7 × 10-3 and 7.25 mbar, layers with a wide compositional range of Ga, C, and N are prepared. The role of carbon on the GaCN optical properties is significant: an increase of the refractive index from 2.19 at 1500 nm (for carbon-free polycrystalline GaN) to 2.46 (for GaCN) is achieved by merely 10 at. % of carbon addition. The presence of sp2-hybridized C=N clusters and carbon at the interface of the GaN polycrystals are proposed to determine their optical properties. Furthermore, the formation of the GaN polycrystals in the composite occurs through a TMG:NH3 surface-adduct assisted pathway, whereas the inclusions of carbon, nitrogen, and gallium are formed by the thermal decomposition of the chemisorbed TMG species.

Palygorskite-Based Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Nanocomposite for Enhanced Antibacterial Activities.

Project description:A synergistic antibacterial strategy is effective in enhancing the antibacterial efficacy of a single antibacterial material. Plant essential oils (PEOs) are safe antibacterial agents. However, some of their characteristics such as intense aroma, volatility, and poor thermal stability limit their antibacterial activity and applications. In this paper, five kinds of PEOs were incorporated onto ZnO/palygorskite (ZnO/PAL) nanoparticles by a simple adsorption process to form organic-inorganic nanocomposites (PEOs/ZnO/PAL) with excellent antibacterial properties. TEM and SEM analyses demonstrated that ZnO nanoparticles uniformly anchored onto the surface of rod-like PAL, and that the structure of ZnO/PAL maintained after the incorporation of ZnO nanoparticles and PEOs. It was found that carvacrol/ZnO/palygorskite (CAR/ZnO/PAL) exhibited higher antibacterial activities than other PEOs/ZnO/PAL nanocomposites, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 0.5 mg/mL and 1.5 mg/mL against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), respectively. Moreover, the antibacterial efficiency of CAR/ZnO/PAL nanocomposites was superior to that of ZnO/PAL and pure CAR, demonstrating the synergistic effect that occurs in the combined system. PAL serving as a carrier for the combination of organic PEOs and ZnO nanoparticles is an effective strategy for enhanced, clay-based, organic-inorganic hybrid antibacterial nanocomposites.

Engineering tunable dual peptide hybrid coatings promote osseointegration of implants.

Project description:Utilizing complementary bioactive peptides is a promising surface engineering strategy for bone regeneration on osteogenesis. In this study, we designed block peptides, (Lysine)6-capped RGD (K6-(linker-RGD)3) and OGP (K6-linker-(YGFGG)2), which were mildly grafted onto PC/Fe-MPNs through supramolecular interactions between K6 and PC residues on the MPNs surface to form a dual peptide coating, named PC/Fe@K6-RGD/OGP. The properties of the block peptides coating, including mechanics, hydrophilicity, chemical composition, etc., were detailly characterized by various techniques (ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water contact angle, scanning electronic microscopy and atomic force microscopy). Importantly, the RGD/OGP ratio can be well adjusted, which allowed optimizing the RGD/OGP ratio to endow significantly enhanced osteogenic activity of MC3T3-E1 cells through the Wnt/β-catenin pathway, while also promoting cell adhesion, immune regulation, inhibiting osteoclast differentiation and oxidative stress reduction. In vivo, the optimized RGD/OGP coatings promoted bone regeneration and osseointegration around implants in rats with bone defects. In conclusion, rationally designed PC/Fe@K6-RGD/OGP coating integrated RGD and OGP bioactivities, providing a convenient approach to enhance bioinert implant surfaces for bone regeneration.

Highly tunable refractive index visible-light metasurface from block copolymer self-assembly.

Project description:The refractive index of natural transparent materials is limited to 2-3 throughout the visible wavelength range. Wider controllability of the refractive index is desired for novel optical applications such as nanoimaging and integrated photonics. We report that metamaterials consisting of period and symmetry-tunable self-assembled nanopatterns can provide a controllable refractive index medium for a broad wavelength range, including the visible region. Our approach exploits the independent control of permeability and permittivity with nanoscale objects smaller than the skin depth. The precise manipulation of the interobject distance in block copolymer nanopatterns via pattern shrinkage increased the effective refractive index up to 5.10. The effective refractive index remains above 3.0 over more than 1,000 nm wavelength bandwidth. Spatially graded and anisotropic refractive indices are also obtained with the design of transitional and rotational symmetry modification.

Design of Ultra-Thin PEO/PDMAEMA Polymer Coatings for Tunable Protein Adsorption.

Project description:Protein adsorption on solid surfaces provides either beneficial or adverse outcomes, depending on the application. Therefore, the desire to predict, control, and regulate protein adsorption on different surfaces is a major concern in the field of biomaterials. The most widely used surface modification approach to prevent or limit protein adsorption is based on the use of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO). On the other hand, the amount of protein adsorbed on poly(2-(dimethylamine)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) coatings can be regulated by the pH and ionic strength of the medium. In this work, ultra-thin PEO/PDMAEMA coatings were designed from solutions with different ratios of PEO to PDMAEMA, and different molar masses of PEO, to reversibly adsorb and desorb human serum albumin (HSA), human fibrinogen (Fb), lysozyme (Lys), and avidine (Av), four very different proteins in terms of size, shape, and isoelectric points. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to characterize the mixed polymer coatings, revealing the presence of both polymers in the layers, in variable proportions according to the chosen parameters. Protein adsorption at pH 7.4 and salt concentrations of 10-3 M was monitored by QCM. Lys and Av did not adsorb on the homo-coatings and the mixed coatings. The amount of HSA and Fb adsorbed decreased with increasing the PEO ratio or its molar mass in a grafting solution. It was demonstrated that HSA and Fb, which were adsorbed at pH 7.4 and at an ionic strength of 10-3 M, can be fully desorbed by rinsing with a sodium chloride solution at pH 9.0 and ionic strength 0.15 M from the mixed PEO5/PDMAEMA coatings with PEO/PDMAEMA mass ratios of 70/30, and 50/50, respectively. The results demonstrate that mixed PEO/PDMAEMA coatings allow protein adsorption to be finely tuned on solid surfaces.
