First Nanoparticles of a Conductor Based on the Organic Donor Molecule BETS: κ-(BETS)2FeCl4.

ABSTRACT: Nanoparticles of the molecular superconductor (BETS)2FeCl4 were obtained by the electrochemical oxidation of BETS in the presence of [(C2H5)4N]FeCl4 and an amphiphilic imine (OATM), acting as a growth controlling agent. When the reaction was carried out with a molar ratio OATM/BETS of 10, roughly spherical nanoparticles exhibiting sizes in the 10-40 nm range were observed. X-ray diffraction patterns evidenced the growth of (BETS)2FeCl4 nanoparticles with the κ-type structure. The current-voltage characteristic recorded on an individual nanoparticle aggregate was fitted with a Shockley diode model. A saturation current of 1216 pA and a threshold voltage of 0.62 V were extracted from this model. This latter value was consistent with roughly half of the energy gap of the semiconducting nano-crystalline aggregate.

Efficient and thermally stable organic solar cells based on small molecule donor and polymer acceptor.

Project description:Efficient organic solar cells (OSCs) often use combination of polymer donor and small molecule acceptor. Herein we demonstrate efficient and thermally stable OSCs with combination of small molecule donor and polymer acceptor, which is expected to expand the research field of OSCs. Typical small molecule donors show strong intermolecular interactions and high crystallinity, and consequently do not match polymer acceptors because of large-size phase separation. We develop a small molecule donor with suppressed π-π stacking between molecular backbones by introducing large steric hindrance. As the result, the OSC exhibits small-size phase separation in the active layer and shows a power conversion efficiency of 8.0%. Moreover, this OSC exhibits much improved thermal stability, i.e. maintaining 89% of its initial efficiency after thermal annealing the active layer at 180 °C for 7 days. These results indicate a different kind of efficient and stable OSCs.

All-Small-Molecule Organic Solar Cells Based on a Fluorinated Small Molecule Donor With High Open-Circuit Voltage of 1.07 V.

Project description:A new small molecule donor with an acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) structure, namely DRTB-FT, has been designed and synthesized for all-small-molecule organic solar cells (ASM-OSCs). By introducing fluorine atoms on the thienyl substituent of the central benzodithiophene unit, DRTB-FT shows a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of -5.64 eV. Blending with an A-D-A type acceptor F-2Cl, DRTB-FT based ASM-OSCs gave a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.66% with a high open-circuit voltage (V oc) of 1.070 V and a low energy loss of 0.47 eV. The results indicate that high V oc of ASM-OSC devices can be obtained through careful donor molecular optimization.

Highly efficient near ultraviolet organic light-emitting diode based on a meta-linked donor-acceptor molecule.

Project description:A novel near ultraviolet (NUV) emitter with a meta-linked donor-acceptor (D-A) structure between triphenylamine (TPA) and phenanthroimidazole (PPI), mTPA-PPI, was designed and synthesized. This molecular design is expected to resolve the conflict between the non-red-shifted emission and the introduction of a charge-transfer (CT) state in the D-A system, aiming at NUV organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with high-efficiency and colour-purity. Theoretical calculations and photophysical experiments were implemented to verify the unique excited state properties of mTPA-PPI. The mTPA-PPI device exhibited excellent NUV electroluminescence (EL) performance with an emission peak at 404 nm, a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of only 47 nm corresponding to a CIE coordinate of (0.161, 0.049), and a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 3.33%, which is among the best results for NUV OLEDs. This work not only demonstrates the promising potential of mTPA-PPI in NUV OLEDs, but also provides a valuable strategy for the rational design of NUV materials by using the meta-linked D-A architecture.

Room temperature all-solid-state lithium batteries based on a soluble organic cage ionic conductor.

Project description:All solid-state lithium batteries (SSLBs) are poised to have higher energy density and better safety than current liquid-based Li-ion batteries, but a central requirement is effective ionic conduction pathways throughout the entire cell. Here we develop a catholyte based on an emerging class of porous materials, porous organic cages (POCs). A key feature of these Li+ conducting POCs is their solution-processibility. They can be dissolved in a cathode slurry, which allows the fabrication of solid-state cathodes using the conventional slurry coating method. These Li+ conducting cages recrystallize and grow on the surface of the cathode particles during the coating process and are therefore dispersed uniformly in the slurry-coated cathodes to form a highly effective ion-conducting network. This catholyte is shown to be compatible with cathode active materials such as LiFePO4, LiCoO2 and LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2, and results in SSLBs with decent electrochemical performance at room temperature.

An Organic Mixed Ion-Electron Conductor for Power Electronics.

Project description:A mixed ionic-electronic conductor based on nanofibrillated cellulose composited with poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythio-phene):-poly(styrene-sulfonate) along with high boiling point solvents is demonstrated in bulky electrochemical devices. The high electronic and ionic conductivities of the resulting nanopaper are exploited in devices which exhibit record values for the charge storage capacitance (1F) in supercapacitors and transconductance (1S) in electrochemical transistors.

Organic Nanoparticles Based on D-A-D Small Molecule: Self-Assembly, Photophysical Properties, and Synergistic Photodynamic/Photothermal Effects.

Project description:Cancer is one of the major diseases threatening human health. Traditional cancer treatments have notable side-effects as they can damage the immune system. Recently, phototherapy, as a potential strategy for clinical cancer therapy, has received wide attention due to its minimal invasiveness and high efficiency. Herein, a small organic molecule (PTA) with a D-A-D structure was prepared via a Sonogashira coupling reaction between the electron-withdrawing dibromo-perylenediimide and electron-donating 4-ethynyl-N,N-diphenylaniline. The amphiphilic organic molecule was then transformed into nanoparticles (PTA-NPs) through the self-assembling method. Upon laser irradiation at 635 nm, PTA-NPs displayed a high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE = 43%) together with efficient reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. The fluorescence images also indicated the production of ROS in cancer cells with PTA-NPs. In addition, the biocompatibility and photocytotoxicity of PTA-NPs were evaluated by 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and live/dead cell co-staining test. Therefore, the as-prepared organic nanomaterials were demonstrated as promising nanomaterials for cancer phototherapy in the clinic.

Donor Derivative Incorporation: An Effective Strategy toward High Performance All-Small-Molecule Ternary Organic Solar Cells.

Project description:Thick-film all-small-molecule (ASM) organic solar cells (OSCs) are preferred for large-scale fabrication with printing techniques due to the distinct advantages of monodispersion, easy purification, and negligible batch-to-batch variation. However, ASM OSCs are typically constrained by the morphology aspect to achieve high efficiency and maintain thick film simultaneously. Specifically, synchronously manipulating crystallinity, domain size, and phase segregation to a suitable level are extremely challenging. Herein, a derivative of benzodithiophene terthiophene rhodanine (BTR) (a successful small molecule donor for thick-film OSCs), namely, BTR-OH, is synthesized with similar chemical structure and absorption but less crystallinity relative to BTR, and is employed as a third component to construct BTR:BTR-OH:PC71BM ternary devices. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 10.14% and fill factor (FF) of 74.2% are successfully obtained in ?300 nm OSC, which outperforms BTR:PC71BM (9.05% and 69.6%) and BTR-OH:PC71BM (8.00% and 65.3%) counterparts, and stands among the top values for thick-film ASM OSCs. The performance enhancement results from the enhanced absorption, suppressed bimolecular/trap-assisted recombination, improved charge extraction, optimized domain size, and suitable crystallinity. These findings demonstrate that the donor derivative featuring similar chemical structure but different crystallinity provides a promising third component guideline for high-performance ternary ASM OSCs.

Development of a hydrolysis-based small-molecule hydrogen selenide (H2Se) donor.

Project description:Selenium is essential to human physiology and has recently shown potential in the treatment of common pathophysiological conditions ranging from arsenic poisoning to cancer. Although the precise metabolic and chemical pathways of selenium incorporation into biomolecules remain somewhat unclear, many such pathways proceed through hydrogen selenide (H2Se/HSe-) formation. Despite this importance, well-characterized chemistry that enables H2Se release under controlled conditions remains lacking. Motivated by this need, we report here the development of a hydrolysis-based H2Se donor (TDN1042). Utilizing 31P and 77Se NMR experiments, we demonstrate the pH dependence of H2Se release and characterize observed reaction intermediates during the hydrolysis mechanism. Finally, we confirm H2Se release using electrophilic trapping reagents, which not only demonstrates the fidelity of this donor platform but also provides an efficient method for investigating future H2Se donor motifs. Taken together, this work provides an early example of an H2Se donor that functions through a well-defined and characterized mechanism.

Highly sensitive amplicon-based transcript quantification by semi-conductor sequencing

Project description:We have adapted a commercial assay that employs mRNA quantification based on the frequency of PCR amplicons determined by next-generation to a high-throughput semi-conductor sequencing platform (Ion-Torrent Proton). We show parallel amplification of pathway derived transcript sets/genes in 12 reference RNA samples followed by sequence-based quantification covering a dynamic range of five orders of magnitude with low technical M-BM- variation. Expression of selected genes were profiled at four time points (0d, 10d, 20d, and 60d) during differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells into cardiomyocytes, with three independent biological replicates at each time point.
