Laser Erasing and Rewriting of Flexible Copper Circuits.

ABSTRACT: Integrating construction and reconstruction of highly conductive structures into one process is of great interest in developing and manufacturing of electronics, but it is quite challenging because these two involve contradictive additive and subtractive processes. In this work, we report an all-laser mask-less processing technology that integrates manufacturing, modifying, and restoring of highly conductive Cu structures. By traveling a focused laser, the Cu patterns can be fabricated on the flexible substrate, while these as-written patterns can be selectively erased by changing the laser to a defocused state. Subsequently, the fresh patterns with identical conductivity and stability can be rewritten by repeating the writing step. Further, this erasing-rewriting process is also capable of repairing failure patterns, such as oxidation and cracking. Owing to the high controllability of this writing-erasing-rewriting process and its excellent reproducibility for conductive structures, it opens a new avenue for rapid healing and prototyping of electronics.

Laser-Assisted Reduction of Highly Conductive Circuits Based on Copper Nitrate for Flexible Printed Sensors.

Project description:Stretchable electronic sensing devices are defining the path toward wearable electronics. High-performance flexible strain sensors attached on clothing or human skin are required for potential applications in the entertainment, health monitoring, and medical care sectors. In this work, conducting copper electrodes were fabricated on polydimethylsiloxane as sensitive stretchable microsensors by integrating laser direct writing and transfer printing approaches. The copper electrode was reduced from copper salt using laser writing rather than the general approach of printing with pre-synthesized copper or copper oxide nanoparticles. An electrical resistivity of 96 μΩ cm was achieved on 40-μm-thick Cu electrodes on flexible substrates. The motion sensing functionality successfully demonstrated a high sensitivity and mechanical robustness. This in situ fabrication method leads to a path toward electronic devices on flexible substrates.

Fractal dendrite-based electrically conductive composites for laser-scribed flexible circuits.

Project description:Fractal metallic dendrites have been drawing more attentions recently, yet they have rarely been explored in electronic printing or packaging applications because of the great challenges in large-scale synthesis and limited understanding in such applications. Here we demonstrate a controllable synthesis of fractal Ag micro-dendrites at the hundred-gram scale. When used as the fillers for isotropically electrically conductive composites (ECCs), the unique three-dimensional fractal geometrical configuration and low-temperature sintering characteristic render the Ag micro dendrites with an ultra-low electrical percolation threshold of 0.97 vol% (8 wt%). The ultra-low percolation threshold and self-limited fusing ability may address some critical challenges in current interconnect technology for microelectronics. For example, only half of the laser-scribe energy is needed to pattern fine circuit lines printed using the present ECCs, showing great potential for wiring ultrathin circuits for high performance flexible electronics.

Fully Solution-Processable Fabrication of Multi-Layered Circuits on a Flexible Substrate Using Laser Processing.

Project description:The development of printing technologies has enabled the realization of electric circuit fabrication on a flexible substrate. However, the current technique remains restricted to single-layer patterning. In this paper, we demonstrate a fully solution-processable patterning approach for multi-layer circuits using a combined method of laser sintering and ablation. Selective laser sintering of silver (Ag) nanoparticle-based ink is applied to make conductive patterns on a heat-sensitive substrate and insulating layer. The laser beam path and irradiation fluence are controlled to create circuit patterns for flexible electronics. Microvia drilling using femtosecond laser through the polyvinylphenol-film insulating layer by laser ablation, as well as sequential coating of Ag ink and laser sintering, achieves an interlayer interconnection between multi-layer circuits. The dimension of microvia is determined by a sophisticated adjustment of the laser focal position and intensity. Based on these methods, a flexible electronic circuit with chip-size-package light-emitting diodes was successfully fabricated and demonstrated to have functional operations.

Covalent 2D-Engineering of Graphene by Spatially Resolved Laser Writing/Reading/Erasing.

Project description:We report a facile and efficient method for the covalent 2D-patterning of monolayer graphene via laser irradiation. We utilized the photo-cleavage of dibenzoylperoxide (DBPO) and optimized the subsequent radical additions to non-activated graphene up to that level where controlled covalent 2D-patterning of graphene initiated by spatially resolved laser writing is possible. The covalent 2D-functionalization of graphene, which is monitored by scanning Raman microscopy (SRM) is completely reversible. This new concept enables write/read/erase control over the covalent chemical information stored on the graphene surface.

Flexible pulse-controlled fiber laser.

Project description:Controlled flexible pulses have widespread applications in the fields of fiber telecommunication, optical sensing, metrology, and microscopy. Here, we report a compact pulse-controlled all-fiber laser by exploiting an intracavity fiber Bragg grating (FBG) system as a flexible filter. The width and wavelength of pulses can be tuned independently by vertically and horizontally translating a cantilever beam, respectively. The pulse width of the laser can be tuned flexibly and accurately from ~7 to ~150 ps by controlling the bandwidth of FBG. The wavelength of pulse can be tuned precisely with the range of >20 nm. The flexible laser is precisely controlled and insensitive to environmental perturbations. This fiber-based laser is a simple, stable, and low-cost source for various applications where the width-tunable and/or wavelength-tunable pulses are necessary.

Mechanically Flexible and High-Performance CMOS Logic Circuits.

Project description:Low-power flexible logic circuits are key components required by the next generation of flexible electronic devices. For stable device operation, such components require a high degree of mechanical flexibility and reliability. Here, the mechanical properties of low-power flexible complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) logic circuits including inverter, NAND, and NOR are investigated. To fabricate CMOS circuits on flexible polyimide substrates, carbon nanotube (CNT) network films are used for p-type transistors, whereas amorphous InGaZnO films are used for the n-type transistors. The power consumption and voltage gain of CMOS inverters are <500 pW/mm at Vin = 0 V (<7.5 nW/mm at Vin = 5 V) and >45, respectively. Importantly, bending of the substrate is not found to cause significant changes in the device characteristics. This is also observed to be the case for more complex flexible NAND and NOR logic circuits for bending states with a curvature radius of 2.6 mm. The mechanical stability of these CMOS logic circuits makes them ideal candidates for use in flexible integrated devices.

Transoral Flexible Laser Surgery of the Larynx with Blue Laser.

Project description:IntroductionLaser surgery of the larynx is currently the standard of clinical practice in a multitude of procedures. Lasers with photoangiolytic properties have a wide application in endolaryngeal lesions. One of their most prominent features is the ability to coagulate blood vessels, reducing unwanted tissue damage. Our objective is to expose the uses of the blue laser (445 nm) in the larynx.Material and methodsA retrospective study was carried out including 47 patients treated with blue photoangiolytic laser from October 2021 to January 2023 at a university hospital. Demographic data, type of lesion presented, date of intervention and scope of the procedure, as well as the parameters of the laser used, were recorded. The number of sessions received per patient, the result and complications were also collected.ResultsA total of 47 patients with laryngeal lesions were treated, including vascular angiomas, laryngeal sulcus vocali, vocal cord polyps, Reinke's edemas, laryngeal papillomatoses, subglottic stenosis, laryngeal synechiae, subglottic granulomas, glottic scars, vocal fold leukoplakias, laryngeal dysplasias and tracheostomal granulomas. The mean age was 52.5 years, and 64.3% of the patients were women. The range of power used in the resective surgeries was 2-10 Watts with a 20-millisecond window. The average number of sessions received was 2.1 (range 1-4). A satisfactory situation was obtained in 45 of the 47 patients treated (95.75%), and an evident decrease in lesions was seen in the remaining two. There was no evidence of any complications directly derived from the use of the blue laser. Twenty-seven cases (54%) were treated exclusively in-office.ConclusionsThe blue laser is safe and effective in the treatment of a wide range of laryngeal pathologies. Its advantages include its portability, its photoangiolytic qualities as well as its ability to vaporize tissue in contact mode, which can treat subepithelial vessels or resect lesions.

Laser-Printed, Flexible Graphene Pressure Sensors.

Project description:While the outstanding properties of graphene have attracted a lot of attention, one of the major bottlenecks of its widespread usage is its availability in large volumes. Laser printing graphene on polyimide films is an efficient single-step fabrication process that can remedy this issue. A laser-printed, flexible pressure sensor is developed utilizing the piezoresistive effect of 3D porous graphene. The pressure sensors performance can be easily adjusted via the geometrical parameters. They have a sensitivity in the range of 1.23 × 10-3 kPa and feature a high resolution with a detection limit of 10 Pa in combination with an extremely wide dynamic range of at least 20 MPa. They also provide excellent long-term stability of at least 15 000 cycles. The biocompatibility of laser-induced graphene is also evaluated by cytotoxicity assays and fluorescent staining, which show an insignificant drop in viability. Polymethyl methacrylate coating is particularly useful for underwater applications, protecting the sensors from biofouling and shunt currents, and enable operation at a depth of 2 km in highly saline Red Sea water. Due to its features, the sensors are a prime choice for multiple healthcare applications; for example, they are used for heart rate monitoring, plantar pressure measurements, and tactile sensing.

Laser-Assisted Photo-Thermal Reaction for Ultrafast Synthesis of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube/Copper Nanoparticles Hybrid Films as Flexible Electrodes.

Project description:The hybridization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and Cu nanoparticles offers a promising strategy for creating highly conductive and mechanically stable fillers for flexible printed electronics. In this study, we report the ultrafast synthesis of SWCNT/Cu hybrid nanostructures and the fabrication of flexible electrodes under ambient conditions through a laser-induced photo-thermal reaction. Thermal energy generated from the nonradiative relaxation of the π-plasmon resonance of SWCNTs was utilized to reduce the Cu-complex (known as a metal-organic decomposition ink) into Cu nanoparticles. We systematically investigated the effects of SWCNT concentration and output laser power on the structural and electrical properties of the SWCNT/Cu hybrid electrodes. The SWCNT/Cu electrodes achieved a minimum electrical resistivity of 46 μohm·cm, comparable to that of the metal-based printed electrodes. Mechanical bending tests demonstrated that the SWCNT/Cu electrodes were highly stable and durable, with no significant deformation observed even after 1000 bending cycles. Additionally, the electrodes showed rapid temperature increases and stable Joule heating performance, reaching temperatures of nearly 80 °C at an applied voltage of less than 3.5 V.

Planar patterned stretchable electrode arrays based on flexible printed circuits.

Project description:For stretchable electronics to achieve broad industrial application, they must be reliable to manufacture and must perform robustly while undergoing large deformations. We present a new strategy for creating planar stretchable electronics and demonstrate one such device, a stretchable microelectrode array based on flex circuit technology. Stretchability is achieved through novel, rationally designed perforations that provide islands of low strain and continuous low-strain pathways for conductive traces. This approach enables the device to maintain constant electrical properties and planarity while undergoing applied strains up to 15%. Materials selection is not limited to polyimide composite devices and can potentially be implemented with either soft or hard substrates and can incorporate standard metals or new nano-engineered conductors. By using standard flex circuit technology, our planar microelectrode device achieved constant resistances for strains up to 20% with less than a 4% resistance offset over 120,000 cycles at 10% strain.
