Project description:The dataset represents a collection of real estate announcements published in 2018 in the Latvian leading advertisement website www.ss.com [1]. In the Latvian case, mentioned advertisement website is alternative information source in contrast with several (5-7) large real estate agencies. The mentioned advertisement website has no important competitors in Latvia, closer competitor reklama. lv [2] is 4-5 times smaller. Advertisement website www.ss.com represents information from small and medium size agencies, as well from individuals, who want to take part in the real estate market. The collected dataset reflects the observation dynamics of 12 months during 2018, including in total 238 thousand observations. Dataset has 24 dimensions, such as in announcement mentioned price for real estate, deal types, dimensions of location of real estate, such as region, district, address; characteristics of real estate, such as real estate type (land, flat and so on), size and main characteristics for each real estate type, such as land area or bad rooms in apartments. The dataset is hosted in Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) repository [3].

Project description:The database presented here was collected by Antoniucci and Marella to analyze the correlation between the housing price gradient and the immigrant population in Italy during 2016. It may also be useful in other statistical analyses, be they on the real estate market or in another branches of social science. The data sample relates to 112 Italian provincial capitals. It provides accurate information on urban structure, and specifically on urban density. The two most significant variables are original indicators constructed from official data sources: the housing price gradient, or the ratio between average prices in the center and suburbs by city; and building density, which is the average number of housing units per residential building. The housing price gradient is calculated for the two residential sub-markets, new-build and existing units, providing an original and detailed sample of the Italian residential market. Rather than average prices, the housing price gradient helps to identify potential divergences in residential market trends. As well as house prices, two other data clusters are considered: socio-economic variables, which provide a framework of each city, in terms of demographic and economic information; and various data on urban structure, which are rarely included in the same database.

Project description:The fact that Internet companies may record our personal data and track our online behavior for commercial or political purpose has emphasized aspects related to online privacy. This has also led to the development of search engines that promise no tracking and privacy. Search engines also have a major role in spreading low-quality health information such as that of anti-vaccine websites. This study investigates the relationship between search engines' approach to privacy and the scientific quality of the information they return. We analyzed the first 30 webpages returned searching "vaccines autism" in English, Spanish, Italian, and French. The results show that not only "alternative" search engines (Duckduckgo, Ecosia, Qwant, Swisscows, and Mojeek) but also other commercial engines (Bing, Yahoo) often return more anti-vaccine pages (10-53%) than Google.com (0%). Some localized versions of Google, however, returned more anti-vaccine webpages (up to 10%) than Google.com. Health information returned by search engines has an impact on public health and, specifically, in the acceptance of vaccines. The issue of information quality when seeking information for making health-related decisions also impact the ethical aspect represented by the right to an informed consent. Our study suggests that designing a search engine that is privacy savvy and avoids issues with filter bubbles that can result from user-tracking is necessary but insufficient; instead, mechanisms should be developed to test search engines from the perspective of information quality (particularly for health-related webpages) before they can be deemed trustworthy providers of public health information.

Project description:Real estate platforms provide a new source of data which has already been used as a substitute for transaction data in hedonic regression applications. This paper asks whether it is valid to do so in the established research areas of (1) willingness to pay estimation, (2) automated valuations, and (3) price index construction. It therefore compares listings and transaction data and regression results derived from them. We find that ask prices stochastically dominate sale prices, mainly because the composition of characteristics differs between the two data sets. But estimates of implicit prices also differ. As a result, willingness to pay estimates from listings data can be widely off when compared with estimates from transaction data. Listings data are not very useful to predict market values of individual houses either, as these predictions suffer from upward bias and large error variance. We find, however, that an ask price index complements a sale price index, as it is useful for nowcasting.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s00181-020-01992-3.

Project description:Sample multiplexing using isobaric tagging is a powerful strategy for proteome-wide protein quantification. One major caveat of isobaric tagging is ratio compression that results from the isolation, fragmentation, and quantification of coeluting, near-isobaric peptides, a phenomenon typically referred to as "ion interference". A robust platform to ensure quality control, optimize parameters, and enable comparisons across samples is essential as new instrumentation and analytical methods evolve. Here, we introduce TKO-iQC, an integrated platform consisting of the Triple Knockout (TKO) yeast digest standard and an automated web-based database search and protein profile visualization application. We highlight two new TKO standards based on the TMTpro reagent (TKOpro9 and TKOpro16) as well as an updated TKO Viewing Tool, TVT2.0. TKO-iQC greatly facilitates the comparison of instrument performance with a straightforward and streamlined workflow.

Project description:The increasing amount of publicly available research data provides the opportunity to link and integrate data in order to create and prove novel hypotheses, to repeat experiments or to compare recent data to data collected at a different time or place. However, recent studies have shown that retrieving relevant data for data reuse is a time-consuming task in daily research practice. In this study, we explore what hampers dataset retrieval in biodiversity research, a field that produces a large amount of heterogeneous data. In particular, we focus on scholarly search interests and metadata, the primary source of data in a dataset retrieval system. We show that existing metadata currently poorly reflect information needs and therefore are the biggest obstacle in retrieving relevant data. Our findings indicate that for data seekers in the biodiversity domain environments, materials and chemicals, species, biological and chemical processes, locations, data parameters and data types are important information categories. These interests are well covered in metadata elements of domain-specific standards. However, instead of utilizing these standards, large data repositories tend to use metadata standards with domain-independent metadata fields that cover search interests only to some extent. A second problem are arbitrary keywords utilized in descriptive fields such as title, description or subject. Keywords support scholars in a full text search only if the provided terms syntactically match or their semantic relationship to terms used in a user query is known.

Project description:Introduction:This study sought to assess the quality of online consumer health information about idiopathic scoliosis. Previous studies showed that quality of online health information varies and often lacks adherence to expert recommendations and guidelines. Nevertheless, 72% of internet users seek health information online. A 2005 analysis of online scoliosis information found that the information was limited and of poor quality. Methods:Two reviewers vetted the top 10 websites resulting from a GoogleTM search for "scoliosis." Content was organized into categories and rated by three physician evaluators using a 1 - 5 scale based on quality, accuracy, completeness of information, readability, and willingness to recommend. Additional information, such as number of ads and Flesch-Kinkaid reading level, also was collected. Results:The average overall physician score was 47.6 (75 possible). All websites included content that was mostly accurate but varied in completeness. Physicians unanimously recommended Mayo Clinic, MedicineNet, and Kids Health; none recommended the GoogleTM Knowledge Graph. The Scoliosis Research Society website reached the highest overall physician score. Readability ranged from 7th grade to college level; only that of Kids Health was below 10th grade level. Conclusions:Most essential information provided by the websites was accurate and generally well rated by physicians. Website ranking by physicians was inconsistent with the ranking order by GoogleTM, indicating that health seekers reviewing the top GoogleTM-ranked websites may not be viewing the websites rated highest by physicians. Physicians should consider patient literacy in website recommendations, as many have an above average literacy level.

Project description:With the rapid increase of downward pressure on China's economy, the stability of the property market, as an important part of the economic transformation process, also has a far-reaching impact on enterprises' R&D investment. We select the data of Chinese large and medium-sized industrial enterprises from 1998 to 2015 as our research sample and propose a new combination measurement model based on closeness degree to measure the real estate bubble level in China accurately. The structural vector autoregressive (SVAR) theory is utilized to empirically test the dynamic relationship between the real estate bubble, corporate liquidity, and R&D investment. The results indicate that the real estate bubble level in China is increasing, and a certain risk of deviating from the safety interval in the future exists; The rapid expansion of the real estate bubble has a continuing negative impact on corporate R&D investment, that is, its "credit mitigation effect" is much smaller than the "capital relocation effect," and industrial enterprises will fall into the so-called "low-tech lock-in" state. In other words, to a certain extent, the development of this kind of real estate bubble will not be conducive to the transformation and upgradation of enterprises and long-term economic growth.

Project description:Self-organization is the generation of order out of local interactions. It is deeply connected to many fields of science from physics, chemistry to biology, all based on physical interactions. The emergence of collective animal behavior is the result of self-organization processes as well, though they involve abstract interactions arising from sensory inputs, information processing, storage, and feedback. Resulting collective behaviors are found, for example, in crowds of people, flocks of birds, and swarms of bacteria. Here we introduce interactions between active microparticles which are based on the information about other particle positions. A real-time feedback of multiple active particle positions is the information source for the propulsion direction of these particles. The emerging structures require continuous information flows. They reveal frustrated geometries due to confinement to two dimensions and internal dynamical degrees of freedom that are reminiscent of physically bound systems, though they exist only as nonequilibrium structures.

Project description:The detection of causal interactions is of great importance when inferring complex ecosystem functional and structural networks for basic and applied research. Convergent cross mapping (CCM) based on nonlinear state-space reconstruction made substantial progress about network inference by measuring how well historical values of one variable can reliably estimate states of other variables. Here we investigate the ability of a developed optimal information flow (OIF) ecosystem model to infer bidirectional causality and compare that to CCM. Results from synthetic datasets generated by a simple predator-prey model, data of a real-world sardine-anchovy-temperature system and of a multispecies fish ecosystem highlight that the proposed OIF performs better than CCM to predict population and community patterns. Specifically, OIF provides a larger gradient of inferred interactions, higher point-value accuracy and smaller fluctuations of interactions and [Formula: see text]-diversity including their characteristic time delays. We propose an optimal threshold on inferred interactions that maximize accuracy in predicting fluctuations of effective [Formula: see text]-diversity, defined as the count of model-inferred interacting species. Overall OIF outperforms all other models in assessing predictive causality (also in terms of computational complexity) due to the explicit consideration of synchronization, divergence and diversity of events that define model sensitivity, uncertainty and complexity. Thus, OIF offers a broad ecological information by extracting predictive causal networks of complex ecosystems from time-series data in the space-time continuum. The accurate inference of species interactions at any biological scale of organization is highly valuable because it allows to predict biodiversity changes, for instance as a function of climate and other anthropogenic stressors. This has practical implications for defining optimal ecosystem management and design, such as fish stock prioritization and delineation of marine protected areas based on derived collective multispecies assembly. OIF can be applied to any complex system and used for model evaluation and design where causality should be considered as non-linear predictability of diverse events of populations or communities.
