Psychological problems and the associated factors related to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown among college students in Amhara Region, Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Objective

The central aim of this study was to assess the level of psychological problems among college students during school closure due to the emerging COVID-19 pandemic.

Design

Institution-based, cross-sectional study.

Setting

Colleges in the Amhara regional state of Ethiopia.

Participants

Participants were college students (N=422, >18 years) who were actively enrolled in the selected colleges preceding the survey.

Methods

Data entry was done using Epi Info V.7.02 and data analysis was done using SPSS V.24.0. Variables with a p value less than 0.25 in the bivariate analysis were entered into the multivariable logistic regression model. Model fitness was checked using the Hosmer-Lemeshow model fitness test. Statistically significant level was declared at p<0.05.

Outcome

Level of psychological problem.

Results

This study involved 408 students, with a response rate of 96.6%. In this study, 77.2%, 71.8% and 48.5% of students experienced depression, anxiety and stress-related psychological problems during the lockdown, respectively. The multivariable logistic regression model showed that being female (adjusted OR (AOR)=1.68, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.91), inadequate practice of prevention measures (AOR=1.74, 95% CI 1.01 to 3.02) and living in an urban residency (AOR=0.76, 95% CI 0.48 to 0.94) were independent predictors of psychological problems among students.

Conclusions

The study revealed that the level of anxiety, stress and depression disorders is optimally high among college students. Therefore, local governments should develop effective psychological interventions for students. Moreover, it is important to consider the educational enrolment type and the academic year of students.

Project description:BackgroundSmartphone-based online education gained popularity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although recent studies have highlighted the association between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and mental health symptoms, the potential role of online learning in this relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between higher education modes, PSU, and related psychological symptoms in university students.MethodsA total of 1,629 Chinese university students from five provinces completed a web-based questionnaire survey between March 2020 and October 2021. Demographic characteristics and learning conditions were recorded. All participants completed the Smartphone Addiction Scale-Short Version, Patient Health Questionnaire, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, and Athens Insomnia Scale. Multiple regressions models and stratified analyses were used to examine the association between online education mode, PSU, and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and insomnia.ResultsThe prevalence of PSU was 58.5%. Students who relied primarily on online learning had a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms (29.95% vs. 22.24%), anxiety symptoms (25.13% vs. 18.91%), and insomnia symptoms (75.89% vs. 70.27%) than those who relied on traditional face-to-face learning (Ps < 0.05). After adjusting for covariates, subjects with PSU were more likely to report depressive symptoms (AdjOR = 3.14, 95% CI = 2.26-4.37), anxiety symptoms (AdjOR = 3.73, 95% CI = 2.13-4.59), and insomnia symptoms (AdjOR = 2.96, 95% CI = 2.23-3.92) than those without PSU. Furthermore, the associations of PSU with depressive symptoms (OR = 4.66 vs. 2.33, P for interaction = 0.015) and anxiety symptoms (OR = 6.05 vs. 2.94, P for interaction = 0.021) were more pronounced in the online learning group.ConclusionOur study provides preliminary evidence that Chinese university students have serious smartphone addiction problems, which are associated with depressive, anxiety, and insomnia symptoms. Online learning is found to exacerbate PSU and mental health problems. Our findings provide valuable information for targeted psychological interventions in the post-COVID-19 era.

Project description:Background Depression, anxiety, and stress (DAS) are common among high school students, and they have a negative impact on their academic performance and future lives. Pandemics, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), exacerbate these issues. Although psychological problems are studied in developed countries, they are overlooked in developing countries such as Ethiopia. Therefore, this study was aimed to assess the prevalence of psychological problems and associated factors among high school students during the COVID-19 pandemic in Sawla town, Gofa zone, southern Ethiopia. Methods A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 663 randomly selected high school students from March 1 to 31, 2021. The data was collected using the depression, anxiety, and stress scale (DASS-21) questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 26.0. Bivariable and multivariable analyses were computed to identify factors associated with DAS. An adjusted odds ratio with 95% CI was used to see the strength of the association and statistical significance was declared at p-value <0.05. Results The overall prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress were 52.1% [95% CI: 48.3, 55.98], 52.6% [95% CI: 48.8, 56.4], and 22.6% [95% CI: 19.4, 25], respectively. Being rural residence (AOR: 4.88, 95% CI: 3.02, 7.88), living in a prison house or with a husband (AOR: 5.94, 95% CI: 1.65, 21.3), having a lower academic level (AOR: 6.23, 95% CI: 3.42), having poor knowledge about COVID-19 (AOR: 1.75, 95% CI: 1.21, 2.53) and poor COVID-19 prevention practices (AOR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.09, 2.79) were associated with depression. Similarly, being a rural resident (AOR: 3.73, 95% CI: 2.38, 5.84), being a lower academic level (AOR: 2.54, 95% CI: 1.50, 4.30), having poor knowledge about COVID-19 (AOR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.08, 2.19), and poor COVID-19 prevention practices (AOR: 2.12, 95% CI: 1.36, 3.32) were associated with anxiety. Furthermore, stress was associated with rural residence (AOR: 2.24, 95% CI: 1.42, 3.53), lower academic level (AOR: 4.70, 95% CI: 2.12, 10.4), and poor knowledge of COVID-19 (AOR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.13, 2.58). Conclusions Depression, anxiety, and stress were all prevalent among high school students in the area. Rural residence, lower academic level, and poor knowledge about COVID-19, as well as poor COVID-19 prevention practices, all increase the likelihood of DAS. As a result, school-based psychological counseling interventions, particularly during pandemics, are critical.

Project description:BackgroundYoung is a key stage in rapid biological and psychosocial changes affecting every aspect of the lives and an important time to set the foundation for good health in adulthood. Adolescent-parent communication is a potential path for improving sexual and reproductive health outcomes for adolescents, most of parents did not teach their adolescents about sexual and reproductive health. Even though, some researches have been done on day time students, there is no study conducted focusing on young girls attending night school in Ethiopia.ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess young-parent communication on sexual and reproductive health issues and associated factors among night female students in Amhara Region, Ethiopia, 2018.MethodSchool based quantitative cross-sectional study was employed in Amhara region among 1640 young female night students from September 15 to November 15/2018. Face-to-face interview-administered questionnaires were used to collect the data. Bi-variable and multi-variable logistic regression model were used. Odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence interval (CI) were computed to determine the strength of association between predictor and outcome variables. P-values less than 0.05 considered as level of significance.ResultsOne hundred ten (37.5%) of the students had communication with their parents on at least two issues of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues in the last 6 months. Grade level (adjusted odd ratio (AOR) = 2.61, 95% CI (2.04, 3.34)), marital status (AOR = 1.29, 95% CI (1.03, 1.63), living arrangement (AOR = 1.50(1.13, 2.00)), utilization of youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services (AOR = 1.80, 95% CI (1.41, 2.30)), students ever had sexual intercourse (AOR = 1.50, 95% CI (1.23, 1.96)), Information about sexual and reproductive health services (AOR = 1.45(1.16, 1.80)) were associated young-parents communication on sexual and reproductive health issues.ConclusionIn this study young-parent communications on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) issues was found to be limited. Therefore, teachers, health extension workers, and health professionals should strengthen comprehensive SRH education for students in school, churches, mosques, health facilities and encouraging them to participate in different health clubs in school. Parent should give education for their children sexual and reproductive health during the era of young age.

Project description:BackgroundAlthough breast cancer has a markedly higher incidence in developed countries, seven out of ten deaths occur in developing countries, including Ethiopia. However, there is a limited information on the quality of life (QoL) among breast cancer patients in Ethiopia, notably in the Amhara region. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the QoL and its associated factors among patients with breast cancer in the Amhara Region, Ethiopia.MethodsAn institutional based cross-sectional study was conducted from 25th March 2019 to 7th July 2019. A systematically selected sample of 256 breast cancer patients were participated in the study. A standardized interviewer-administered Amharic version questionnaire was used to collect the data. We used the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer quality of life questionnaire core 30 (EORTC QLQ C30) and breast cancer supplementary measure (QLQ-BR23) to measure QoL. The data were analyzed by SPSS version 23. A binary logistic regression model was fitted to identify the predictors of QoL. The adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) was reported to show the strength of the association.ResultsSixty-eight percent of breast cancer patients had poor QoL (68.4%; 95% CI: 62.5-73.8). The mean score of QoL was 70.6 (standard deviation (SD) ±13.9; 95% CI: 69.0-72.4). All functional component scores were less than 75 on the symptom scale. Diarrhea (11.6), constipation (17.5), and dyspnea (24.7) were less noticeable symptoms. Being out of marriage (AOR = 2.59, 95% CI: 1.32-5.07), being poor (AOR = 2.39, 95%CI: 1.32-5.03), being non-housewife (AOR = 3.25, 95% CI: 1.16-7.22), and being complaints of dyspnea (AOR = 3.48, 95% CI: 1.79-6.79), and insomnia (AOR = 2.03, 95% CI: 1.05-3.91) were significantly associated with QoL.ConclusionsThe proportion of poor QoL among breast cancer patients was high. Health care professionals should give attention to breast cancer patients who are out of marriage, poor and non-housewife while offering the recommended treatment courses.

Project description:BackgroundSimulation is a method of learning in which the learner experiences a simulated situation instead of being physically present in the clinical area. Exposing students to simulation-based education improves learners' clinical competence and ability to make decisions, which are crucial for today's health workforce. When given the proper circumstances, such as receiving feedback on their performance, having the chance for repeated practice, and having simulation as a core component of the curriculum, simulated instruction greatly aids in learning. Although previous studies have been conducted in this area, there are gaps in determining the factors related to their learning environment and design characteristics.MethodAn institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 413 midwifery students in Amhara region universities from August 1-30, 2022. Study participants were selected via a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected from third and fourth-year undergraduate midwifery students through a self-administered questionnaire. Epi Data version 4.6 and Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 26 were used for data entry and analysis, respectively. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were employed; a P-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant in the study.ResultThis study revealed that 84.7% (95% CI: 81.1-88.3) of midwifery students in Amhara region universities were satisfied with simulation-based education. Year of study [AOR: 2.936; 95% CI (1.531-5.631)], adequate support [AOR: 2.903; 95% CI (1.217-6.922)], availability of instructors [AOR = 2.861, 95% CI (1.078-7.591)], and provision of checklists [AOR: 2.326; 95% CI (1.143-4.734)] were found to be statistically significant variables.ConclusionThis study revealed undergraduate midwifery students were more satisfied with simulation-based education compared with previous studies conducted in Ethiopia. Predictor variables such as year of study, support, instructor availability, and provision of checklists were significantly associated with student satisfaction. Hence, midwifery departments should strengthen the support given by staff, encourage their instructors to be available during simulations, improve the utilization and provision of checklists to students as much as possible.

Project description:BackgroundThe Corona virus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic is a human tragedy that occurred in this era. It poses an unprecedented psychological, social, economic, and health crisis. The mental health and well-being of entire societies are suffering as a result of this crisis, but the suffering is greater in students at all levels of education and must be addressed immediately. Thus, this study was aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence and associated factors of the psychological impact of COVID-19 among higher education students.MethodsThe potential studies were searched via PubMed, HINARI, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Studies were appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal checklist. Micro Soft Excel was used to extract the data, which was then exported to Stata version 14 for analysis. Heterogeneity between studies was tested using Cochrane statistics and the I2 test, and small-study effects were checked using Egger's statistical test. A random-effects model was employed to estimate the pooled prevalence of the psychological impact of COVID-19 and its associated factor.ResultsAfter reviewing 227 studies, eight fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of the psychological impact of Corona virus disease 19 among higher education students in Ethiopia, including depression, anxiety, and stress was 43.49% (95% CI: 29.59, 57.40%), 46.27% (95% CI: 32.77, 59.78%), and 31.43% (95% CI: 22.71, 40.15), respectively. Having a medical illness, being an urban resident, living with parents, having relative death due to pandemics, and having a non-health field of study were identified as significant associated factors for the impact of the pandemic in higher education students.ConclusionThe COVID-19 pandemic had a significant psychological impact on college and university students. Depression, anxiety, and stress were the most commonly reported psychological impacts across studies among higher education students. Hence, applying tele-psychotherapy using, smartphones, and social media platforms has an effect on reducing the impact. Programs for preventing and controlling epidemics should be developed by the government and higher education institutions that incorporate mental health interventions and build resilience.
