The demand for water-energy (WE) should be addressed with their sustainable supply in the long-term planning. Project description:Land use land cover (LULC) conversion around urban areas is the root cause for the increasing trend of land surface temperature (LST) in many cities. The increase in LST is driven by the replacement of vegetation cover and other LULC by impervious surface. This study is aimed to assess the extent of urban thermal field variance index (UTFVI) and thermal comfort level of Addis Ababa city using geospatial techniques and linear regression model. Landsat image of 1990 TM, 2000 of ETM+ and 2020 of OLI/TIRS are used to analyze LST and Urban Heat Islands (UHI) for assessing UTFVI and urban thermal comfort level. The results showed that the UHI over Addis Ababa city is substantial increased over the past decades. The results reveled that LST has increased by 7.9 °C due to decline of vegetation cover and expansion of built-up area. Results show that about 225 km2 (42.7%) is excellent comfort for urban resident while about 241.4 km2 (45.8%) is categorized as worst ecological evaluation index, which results discomfort to the city dwellers. The key findings of from this study are crucial for informing city administrators and urban planners to reduce urban heat islands by investing on urban green areas and open spaces. Project description:Water resources are often at the center of urban development but, as the city expands, the environmental pressure on its water resources increases. Therefore, in this study, we looked into how various land uses and changes in land cover affect the water quality in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Land use and land cover change maps were generated from 1991 to 2021 at intervals of five years. On the basis of the weighted arithmetic water quality index approach, the water quality for the same years was likewise divided into five classes. The relationship between land use/land cover dynamics and water quality was then evaluated using correlations, multiple linear regressions, and principal component analysis. According to the computed water quality index, the water quality decreased from 65.34 in 1991 to 246.76 in 2021. The built-up area showed an increase of over 338%, whereas the amount of water decreased by over 61%. While barren land exhibited a negative correlation with nitrates, ammonia loadings, total alkalinity, and total hardness of the water, agriculture and built-up areas positively correlated with water quality parameters such as nutrient loading, turbidity, total alkalinity, and total hardness. A principal component analysis revealed that built up areas and changes in vegetated areas have the biggest impact on water quality. These findings suggest that land use and land cover modifications are involved in the deterioration of water quality around the city. This study will offer information that might help reduce the dangers to aquatic life in urbanized environments.

Project description:In Addis Ababa, Shared minibus taxis are contributing significantly more than any other form of public transit to meeting the city's transportation needs. But there were limited research done on taxis in general and customer satisfaction with minibus taxis in particular. Therefore, this study aims to assess the satisfaction of minibus taxi customers through a survey questionnaire distributed and collected at taxi stations. Descriptive analysis was used to measure the satisfaction levels/rates of respondents towards each service quality attribute of the minibus taxis. Then, we compared the means value of satisfaction responses followed by factor/principal component analysis. Once the most important satisfaction variables are identified through the factor analysis, an ordered logit model was used to create a relationship between the selected satisfaction variables and the socio-demographic characteristics of taxi riders. The results of the study showed that minibus taxi overload, safety, and security at stations are attributes in which the respondents show greater dissatisfaction. The result of the ordered logit model revealed that the respondents who showed greater dissatisfaction with the taxi drivers and their assistants' behavior are those who had been stolen at least once on a minibus taxi. Also, riders weigh more on the functionality of the service than their comfort and security. Thus, the service providers, Addis Ababa Road Authority, security personnel, and any relevant body should work together on maximizing the customers' satisfaction in minibus taxis.

Project description:In sub-Saharan Africa, urban areas generally have better access to and use of maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services than rural areas, but previous research indicates that there are significant intra-urban disparities. This study aims to investigate temporal trends and geographic differences in maternal, newborn, and child health service utilization between Addis Ababa's poorest and richest districts and households. A World Bank district-based poverty index was used to classify districts into the top 60% (non-poor) and bottom 40% (poor), and wealth index data from the Ethiopian Demographic and Health Survey (EDHS) was used to classify households into the top 60% (non-poor) and bottom 40% (poor). Essential maternal, newborn, and child health service coverage was estimated from routine health facility data for 2019-2021, and five rounds of the EDHS (2000-2019) were used to estimate child mortality. The results showed that service coverage was substantially higher in the top 60% than in the bottom 40% of districts. Coverage of four antenatal care visits, skill birth attendance, and postnatal care all exceeded 90% in the non-poor districts but only ranged from 54 to 67% in the poor districts. Inter-district inequalities were less pronounced for childhood vaccinations, with over 90% coverage levels across all districts. Inter-district inequalities in mortality rates were considerable. The neonatal mortality rate was nearly twice as high in the bottom 40% of households' as in the top 60% of households. Similarly, the under-5 mortality rate was three times higher in the bottom 40% compared to the top 60% of households. The substantial inequalities in MNCH service utilization and child mortality in Addis Ababa highlight the need for greater focus on the city's women and children living in the poorest households and districts in maternal, newborn, and child health programs.

Project description:Studies that assess the distribution of benefits provided by ecosystem services across urban areas are increasingly common. Nevertheless, current knowledge of both the supply and demand sides of ecosystem services remains limited, leaving a gap in our understanding of balance between ecosystem service supply and demand that restricts our ability to assess and manage these services. The present study seeks to fill this gap by developing and applying an integrated approach to quantifying the supply and demand of a key ecosystem service, carbon storage and sequestration, at the local level. This approach follows three basic steps: (1) quantifying and mapping service supply based upon Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) processing and allometric models, (2) quantifying and mapping demand for carbon sequestration using an indicator based on local anthropogenic CO2 emissions, and (3) mapping a supply-to-demand ratio. We illustrate this approach using a portion of the Twin Cities Metropolitan Area of Minnesota, USA. Our results indicate that 1735.69 million kg carbon are stored by urban trees in our study area. Annually, 33.43 million kg carbon are sequestered by trees, whereas 3087.60 million kg carbon are emitted by human sources. Thus, carbon sequestration service provided by urban trees in the study location play a minor role in combating climate change, offsetting approximately 1% of local anthropogenic carbon emissions per year, although avoided emissions via storage in trees are substantial. Our supply-to-demand ratio map provides insight into the balance between carbon sequestration supply in urban trees and demand for such sequestration at the local level, pinpointing critical locations where higher levels of supply and demand exist. Such a ratio map could help planners and policy makers to assess and manage the supply of and demand for carbon sequestration.

Project description:BackgroundThe health sectors success has been determined by consistent and reasonably priced health commodities supply. Despite possible death from the disease, Tuberculosis (TB) can be prevented with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment for which enough, effective, and qualified medicines need to be available. However, studies revealed stock of anti-TB drugs in health facilities. Here we present the recent finding on determinants of stock out of Anti-TB drug at public health facilities of Addis Ababa.ObjectiveThis study aimed to identify determinants of stock outs of first line anti TB drugs at public health facilities under Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau.MethodMixed study design were employed. A total of 106 facilities were included in the sampling frame and data were collected from the study population such as drug store managers of health facilities providing TB treatment using semi structured questionnaire and through in-depth interview with Addis Ababa hubs of the Ethiopian Pharmaceuticals Supply Agency (EPSA), Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau and selected heads of pharmacy departments of health facilities from May 1-30, 2020 considering one year back retrospective data from March 20,2019 to March 20,2020. Structured record review of data from Logistics Management Information System (LMIS) tools having TB drugs was done using structured observation checklist. Data were entered, cleaned, and analyzed using SPSS Version 20. Both descriptive and multiple logistic regression analysis were performed.Result52(62.7%) of health facilities encountered stock out for at least one of these drugs during the past 1 year. Rifampicin 75 mg + Isoniazid 50 mg (RH 75/50 mg) were most stocked out first line anti-TB drug from 33(39.8%) of facilities with 17 mean stocks out days while Rifampicin 75 mg + Isoniazid 50 mg + Pyrazinamide 150 mg (RHZ 75/50/150 mg) were the least first line anti-TB drug stocked out from facilities with mean 5 days of stock out. Delayed supply of anti TB drug from EPSA, delivery of reduced quantity of anti TB drugs by EPSA and stocked out of anti TB Drugs at EPSA were significant determinate factors of stock out of first line anti-TB drug from facilities with 95%CI of 10.34(2.167-49.329), 11.452(2.183-60.079) and 5.646(1.240-25.707) respectively.ConclusionAbove median of health facilities encountered stock out of first line anti-TB drug in Addis Ababa. Delayed supply of anti TB drug from EPSA, delivery of reduced quantity of anti TB drugs by EPSA and stocked out of anti TB Drugs at EPSA were significant determinate factor of stocked out of first line anti-TB drug from facilities. EPSA and other responsible bodies shall work collaboratively to improve their service and ensure availability of adequate amount of Anti TB drug in health facilities.

Project description:Tumour hypoxia is a well-recognised barrier to anti-cancer therapy and represents one of the best validated targets in oncology. Previous attempts to tackle hypoxia have focussed primarily on increasing tumour oxygen supply; however, clinical studies using this approach have yielded only modest clinical benefit, with often significant toxicity and practical limitations. Therefore, there are currently no anti-hypoxia treatments in widespread clinical use. As an emerging alternative strategy, we discuss the relevance of inhibiting tumour oxygen metabolism to alleviate hypoxia and highlight recently initiated clinical trials using this approach.

Project description:Urban parks provide multiple non-material benefits to human health and well-being; measuring these "intangible" benefits mainly co-produced by the spatial interactivity between dwellers and urban parks is vital for urban green space management. This paper introduced "vitality" to measure the intangible benefits of urban parks and constructed a straightforward and spatially explicit approach to assess the park vitality based on visiting intensity and recreational satisfaction rate. Freely available data of check-in comments on parks, points-of-interest (POIs), and other multi-source data from Beijing were used to assess the urban park vitality and explore the factors influencing it from the perspectives of recreational service supply, demand, and spatial linking characteristics. We found that the urban park vitalities decreased along the urban-rural gradient. The presence of water and facility density in the parks have significant positive impacts on park vitality, and high population density nearby was a positive factor. Moreover, the external higher levels of the POI-based urban function mix and density, as well as developed public transportation, were strongly associated with greater park vitality. Our research proposed a feasible and effective method to assess the park vitality, and the findings from this study have significant implications for optimizing the spatial configuration of urban parks.

Project description:BackgroundTrihalomethanes (THMs), a class of DBPs (disinfection byproducts) that includes chloroform, bromodichloromethane (BDCM), chlorodibromomethane (CDBM), and bromoform. To the best of authors' knowledge, no study has addressed the relationship between the concentration of THMs and lifetime cancer risks (LCR) in drinking water supply system in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the lifetime cancer risks of exposure to THMs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.MethodA total of 120 duplicate water samples were collected from 21 sampling points in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The THMs were separated by a DB-5 capillary column and detected by an electron capture detector (ECD). Cancer and non-cancer risk assessments were performed.ResultsThe average total THMs (TTHMs)concentration in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, was 76.3 μg/L. Chloroform was the most dominant THM species identified. The total cancer risk for males was higher than that for females. The average LCR for TTHMs via ingestion in drinking water in this study was unacceptably high risk 93.4 × 10 - 2 . An average LCR through dermal routes was also of unacceptably high risk 4.3 × 10 - 2 . The LCR by chloroform contributes the highest (72%) of the total risk, followed by BDCM (14%), DBCM (10%) and bromoform (4%).ConclusionsThe cancer risk of drinking water due to THMs in Addis Ababa was higher than the level recommended by the USEPA. The total LCR from the targeted THMs was higher via the three exposure routes. Males were at higher THM cancer risk than females. The hazard index (HI) indicated that the dermal route caused higher HI values than the ingestion route. It is essential to apply alternatives to chlorine, i.e., chlorine dioxide (ClO2), ozone and ultraviolet radiation, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The monitoring and regulation of the THMs is required on a regular basis to analyse the trends and guide the water treatment and distribution system.Availability of data and materialsThe datasets generated for this analysis are available from the corresponding author upon reasonable request.

Project description:IntroductionCancer is an emerging public health problem in Ethiopia, with breast and cervical cancers accounting for over half of all newly diagnosed cancers in women. The majority of women with breast and cervical cancer are diagnosed at late stage of the disease and most patients do not receive care consistent with global standards. However, little is known about the health-seeking behaviours, barriers to early detection and treatment, patient-reported outcomes, financial burden and survival of women with breast and cervical cancer in the country. Therefore, this study aims to document the experience of women with breast and cervical cancer from recognition of symptoms to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship/mortality in Addis Ababa city, Ethiopia.Methods and analysisA prospective follow-up study using mixed methods (both quantitative and qualitative) will be employed. All women newly diagnosed with breast and cervical cancer from 1 January, 2017 to 30 June 2018 in Addis Ababa will be included in the study. Interviewer-administered questionnaires will be used to collect information about medical consultations after recognition of symptoms, health-seeking behaviours, treatment received, barriers to early detection and treatment, and survivorship care. In-depth interview will be conducted on purposefully selected women with breast and cervical cancer. The primary outcomes of the study are time intervals (patient and diagnostic waiting times), stage at diagnosis and survival. Multivariable analysis will be employed to determine the contributions of independent variables on the outcomes of interest. HRs with 95% CIs will be calculated for time-to-event outcomes. Qualitative data will be analysed using thematic analysis.Ethics and disseminationThis protocol is ethically approved by Institutional Review Board of Addis Ababa University. Verbal informed consent will be obtained from study participants. Results will be disseminated in international peer-reviewed journals and presented in relevant conferences.
