Mapping theme trends and recognizing research hot spots in the use of ultrasound in orthopaedics: a bibliometric analysis of global research.

ABSTRACT: Background
In the past decade, ultrasound has been increasingly used in the field of orthopaedics. The purpose of this study is to inspire future research in this field by analyzing the publications relating to ultrasound research in orthopaedics.Methods
All relevant articles published between 2009 and 2020 were retrieved from Web of Science. Statistical Package for Social Science and GraphPad Prism 8 software were used to generate and analyse diagrams. VOSviewer software and CiteSpace were employed to visualize the research trends based on co-occurring keywords. Finally, we obtained information about relevant clinical randomized controlled trials (http://clinicaltrials.gov.com/).Results
The United States had the most publications in this field and the most citations and the highest H-index. Furthermore, Skeletal Radiology published the most papers related to the use of ultrasound in orthopaedics, Ozcakar L published the most papers, and a study by Kwon, YM had the highest citation frequency. The keywords "MRI", "complication", "female" and "male" were identified as being indicative of emerging topics.Conclusions
While the contribution of United States to publications in this field has been substantial, the future contributions of China cannot be ignored. Moreover, it is hypothesized that diagnostic and epidemiological aspects may become hotspots.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to draw a series of scientific maps to quantitatively and qualitatively evaluate hot spots and trends in postmenopausal osteoporosis research using bibliometric analysis.MethodsScientific papers published on postmenopausal osteoporosis were extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection and PubMed database. Extracted information was analyzed quantitatively with bibliometric analysis by CiteSpace, the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology and Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder (BICOMB). To explore the hot spots in this field, co-word biclustering analysis was conducted by gCLUTO based on the major MeSH terms/MeSH subheading terms-source literatures matrix.ResultsWe identified that a total of 5,247 publications related to postmenopausal osteoporosis were published between 2013 and 2017. The overall trend decreased from 1,071 literatures in 2013 to 1,048 literatures in 2017. Osteoporosis International is the leading journal in the field of postmenopausal osteoporosis research, both in terms of impact factor score (3.819) and H-index value (157). The United States has retained a top position and has exerted a pivotal influence in this field. The University of California, San Francisco was identified as a leading institution for research collaboration, and Professors Reginster and Kanis have made great achievements in this area. Eight research hot spots were identified.ConclusionsOur study found that in the past few years, the etiology and drug treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis have been research hot spots. They provide a basis for the study of the pathogenesis of osteoporosis and guidelines for the drug treatment of osteoporosis.

Project description:BackgroundThe challenges that viral pneumonia poses to the global public health system remain daunting. In this study, an analysis of publications on viral pneumonia over the past two decades was conducted. Through this work, we hope to provide inspiration for future research on viral pneumonia.MethodsWe extracted all of the English publications relevant to viral pneumonia published during 1999-2019 from Web of Science. GraphPad Prism, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer were used to collect and analyze the publication trends in related fields.ResultsWe identified 2,006 publications with 62,155 citations as of February 16, 2021. The United States accounted for the largest number of publications (34.2%), with the highest number of citations (27,616) and the highest h-index (78). China ranked second in the number of publications. Ctr Dis Control & Prevent proved to be the center of research cooperation. Clinical Infectious Diseases included the most papers published relating to the topic of viral pneumonia. Chan KH published the most papers in this field (25), while an article from Fouchier RAM presented the highest citation frequency (1,275).ConclusionsAccording to the bibliometric analysis database and related software results, the United States dominates the field of viral pneumonia research. The key term extracted by VOSviewer has shifted to "Diagnosis and management", indicating a new trend for viral pneumonia research.

Project description:BackgroundWith the popularization of knee replacement surgery in the treatment of the advanced lesions of knee joint, the amount of knee revision surgery is increasing unceasingly. Meanwhile, the continuous introduction of new clinical concepts and new technology poses a challenge to researchers and surgeons. Our study aims to inform the future scientific research and clinical treatment, by investigating the hot spots and trends of the knee revision research field with the method of bibliometric analysis.MethodsPublications on knee revision included in the database of Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) between 2000 and 2018 were reviewed and MeSH terms of them were extracted from PubMed. Online bibliometric analysis website (http://bibliometric.com/), two pieces of software called "CiteSpace" and "Bibliographic Item Co-Occurrence Matrix Builder" (BICOMB) were used to analyze the publications reviewed at quantitative level. Another piece of software called "gCLUTO", was used to investigate the hot spots with visualization techniques at qualitative level.ResultsA total of 906 publications were retrieved between 2000 and 2018. There is an increasing number of publications, from 15 in 2000 to 86 in 2018. Journal of Arthroplasty is the leading journal which has the most publications on knee revision. The United States has been the biggest contributor. Mayo Clinic became the leader among the institutions which have conducted correlational researches. David G. Lewallen, Robert L. Barrack and Michael A. Mont should be regarded as the scholars who have made outstanding contribution. Hot spots were summed up in six clusters, respectively, the solutions for infection, prostheses, the adverse effects, the surgical techniques, epidemiological characters, and the pathophysiology of the revision knee.ConclusionsWe found a growing trend in knee revision research and extracted the most contributive researchers, institutions, countries, journals, and most-cited articles worldwide. The solutions for complications, surgical applications and analysis for epidemiological characters have been the hot spots. Multi-disciplinary integration is becoming the time-trend of hot spots. Minimally invasive and navigation are directions of revision surgery. They together constitute a solid foundation and set up a fingerpost for the future scientific research and clinical treatment.

Project description:Background Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) is the most common autoimmune disease, affecting 3-5% patients worldwide. In recent years, approximately 200 articles on AIT have been published annually in various journals. However, to date, no article has systematically assessed the related literature. Therefore, we conducted a bibliometric analysis on AIT to reveal the dynamic scientific developments and help researchers gain a global perspective while exploring the hotspots and development trends. Methods AIT-related articles and reviews from 2000 to 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). The following search terms were used to extract document data: TS= (“ autoimmune thyroiditi*”) OR TI= (“chronic lymphocytic thyroiditi*”) OR TI=(hashimoto*) OR TI= (“postpartum thyroiditis”). We selected articles and reviews published in English from 2000 to 2022. Three software programs (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Pajek) were employed to analyze the contribution and co-occurrence relationships of different references, countries/regions, institutes, journals and also keywords in this field. Results This scientometric study included 2290 English papers published in 723 journals with 39661 co-cited references from 561 institutions in 120 countries/regions. Based on the reference and keyword analysis, researchers used to focus on “apoptosis”, “insulin resistance”, “encephalopathy”, “IFN-γ” related to AIT during the past 20 years. However, with the development of other novel directions such as “papillary thyroid cancer” (2018-2022), “Vitamin D” (2016-2022), “oxidative stress” (2018-2022), “polymorphism” (2019-2022) and “association” (2020-2022), researchers are more interested in the relationship between papillary thyroid carcinoma and AIT, the effect of vitamin D supplementation on AIT, the oxidative stress in thyroid disease as well as the influence of polymorphism. Conclusion Bibliometric analysis of the outputs of AIT shows an overview of the current status of the research on AIT. The associations between papillary thyroid carcinoma, vitamin D, oxidative stress, polymorphism and AIT are major research frontiers. However, further research and collaboration are still required worldwide. Our findings can help researchers grasp the research status of AIT and quickly determine new directions for future research.

Project description:BackgroundSubacute thyroiditis (SAT) is the most prevalent self-limiting thyroid disease that causes pain, accounting for about 5% of all clinical thyroid disorders. Numerous clinically noteworthy results have been published in this area over the last 20 years. However, no article has comprehensively assessed the relevant literature yet. We conducted a bibliometric analysis of SAT to provide light on the dynamic nature of scientific advancement and aid researchers in gaining a global perspective while examining research core themes and hotspots.MethodsSAT-related articles and reviews from 2001 to 2022 were retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC). We analyzed current research trends and hotspots in this area using CiteSpace and Vosviewer.ResultsA total of 568 studies associated with SAT research were published in 282 academic journals by 2,473 authors in 900 institutions from 61 countries/regions. The United States was a crucial link in inter-country/region collaboration and was the most frequently involved country in international cooperation. The University of Missouri System was the top organization, and Braley-Mullen H. was the most productive researcher. Thyroid published the most papers, with 36 publications. The most co-cited article was "Clinical features and outcome of subacute thyroiditis in an incidence cohort: Olmsted County, Minnesota, study" (by Fatourechi V., 2003). The clustered network and timeline view of keywords showed that the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of SAT were the research core themes during the past 20 years. Analysis of keyword bursts indicated that the clinical characteristic and the influence of COVID-19 on SAT appeared to be the current research hotspots.ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis conducted a thorough review of the SAT research. The clinical characteristics and the genetic background of SAT under the influence of COVID-19 are current research hotspots. However, there is still a need for further study and global collaboration. Our findings can aid researchers in understanding the current status of SAT research and immediately pinpoint new directions for further investigation.

Project description:BackgroundLight chain (AL) amyloidosis stands as the most prevalent subtype of systemic amyloidosis, encompassing a group of rare diseases. Here, we evaluated the scientific landscape of AL amyloidosis to investigate research trends and identify hotspots within the field.MethodsRelevant studies on AL amyloidosis published over the past two decades were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. The publications between 2005 and 2024 were subjected to bibliometric analyses, leveraging tools including CiteSpace, VOSviewer, RStudio and MS Excel to analyse and visualize the annual publication trend, co-occurrence patterns, collaborative networks among countries, organizations, and authors. Burst keywords and references were also examined to obtain the research history, and emerging hotspots.ResultsThe bibliometric analysis included 2,864 articles published between 2005 and 2024. The most productive journal is Amyloid-Journal of Protein Folding Disorders. The United States, along with several developed nations, emerges as a dominant force in international AL amyloidosis research. "AL amyloidosis" and "cardiac amyloidosis" were the primary hotspots over the past two decades, and "Biomarkers," "Cardiac amyloidosis," and "treatment" would be future trends.ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis examined the research developments in AL amyloidosis over the past two decades using bibliometric software. Recent research in this field primarily focuses on two main areas: clinical diagnosis and treatment of AL amyloidosis, as well as cardiac amyloidosis. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanisms underlying immunoglobulin light chain aggregation and deposition to mitigate organ involvement.

Project description:Introduction: Network pharmacology has emerged as a forefront and hotspot in anti-cancer. Traditional anti-cancer drugs are limited by the paradigm of "one cancer, one target, one drug," making it difficult to address the challenges of recurrence and drug resistance. However, the main advantage of network pharmacology lies in its approach from the perspective of molecular network relationships, employing a "one arrow, multiple targets" strategy, which provides a novel pathway for developing anti-cancer drugs. This study employed a bibliometric analysis method to examine network pharmacology's application and research progress in cancer treatment from January 2008 to May 2023. This research will contribute to revealing its forefront and hotspots, offering new insights and methodologies for future investigations. Methods: We conducted a literature search on network pharmacology research in anti-cancer (NPART) from January 2008 to May 2023, utilizing scientific databases such as Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and PubMed to retrieve relevant research articles and reviews. Additionally, we employed visualization tools such as Citespace, SCImago Graphica, and VOSviewer to perform bibliometric analysis. Results: This study encompassed 3,018 articles, with 2,210 articles from WoSCC and 808 from PubMed. Firstly, an analysis of the annual national publication trends and citation counts indicated that China and the United States are the primary contributing countries in this field. Secondly, the recent keyword analysis revealed emerging research hotspots in "tumor microenvironment," "anti-cancer drugs," and "traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). " Furthermore, the literature clustering analysis demonstrated that "calycosin," "molecular mechanism," "molecular docking," and "anti-cancer agents" were widely recognized research hotspots and forefront areas in 2023, garnering significant attention and citations in this field. Ultimately, we analyzed the application of NPART and the challenges. Conclusion: This study represents the first comprehensive analysis paper based on bibliometric methods, aiming to investigate the forefront hotspots of network pharmacology in anti-cancer research. The findings of this study will facilitate researchers in swiftly comprehending the current research trends and forefront hotspots in the domain of network pharmacology in cancer research.

Project description:Study objectivesTo evaluate sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) research and to quantitatively and qualitatively predict research hot spots using bibliometric analysis.MethodsWe extracted relevant publications from the Web of Science Core Collection on July 28, 2021. We investigated the retrieved data by bibliometric analysis (e.g. co-cited and cluster analysis, keyword co-occurrence) using the software CiteSpace and VOSviewer, the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology (http://bibliometric.com/) and Bibliometrix to analyse and predict the trends and hot spots in this field.Main resultsWe identified 1,582 published articles and reviews on SAE from 2001 to 2021. During this period, the number of manuscripts on SAE increased steadily and peaked in 2021. The USA and China were the leading countries that had a critical impact on SAE research. Among all institutions, Vanderbilt University and Pittsburgh University held leading positions and became central in the collaboration network. Among all the journals, Critical Care Medicine published the maximum number of manuscripts in the field of SAE within 20 years. Dal-Pizzol Felipe was the most productive author (61 papers) and received the largest number of citations (930 citations). Co-citation cluster analysis revealed that the most popular terms on SAE in the manner of cluster labels were critical illness, sepsis-associated encephalopathy, polymicrobial sepsis, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, rat brain, intensive care unit, prior sepsis, molecular hydrogen, inflammation drive, metabolic encephalopathies, delirium pathophysiology, and clinical neuroscience. Keyword burst detection indicated that neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier (BBB) and mitochondria dysfunction were the current research hot spots.ConclusionsOur study revealed that neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier, and mitochondria dysfunction had been the research foci of SAE over the past 20 years. These have emerged as the basis for transformation from basic research to clinical application in finding effective methods for the prevention and treatment of SAE.

Project description:Glycolipid metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and atherosclerosis, which have become a major public health concern worldwide, are mainly triggered by hepatic glycolipid metabolism disorder. Bibliometric analysis has provided a comprehensive review of developments in hepatic glycolipid metabolism research and changes in research hotspots over the past 20 years. The articles regarding hepatic glycolipid metabolism from 2002 to 2021 were identified from the Science Citation Index-Expanded of Web of Science Core Collection. Acquired data were then processed by the CiteSpace software and the Online Analysis Platform of Literature Metrology to analyze trends and predict hot spots in this field. A total of 4,856 articles regarding hepatic glycolipid metabolism published from 2002 to 2021 were selected. The leading country was China. The Chinese Academy of Sciences was the most productive institution. Co-citation cluster labels revealed characteristics of ten main clusters: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gut microbiota, adiponectin, fructose, fgf21, fatty acid, liver x receptor, nr4a, obese mice, and bile acids. Keyword bursts analysis indicated that management, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and modulation were the newly emerging research hot spots. We described the overall structure of scientific research on hepatic glycolipid metabolism and presented systematic information to other researchers. The current focus on NAFLD and gut microbiota is critical to further study and will help explore effective therapeutic strategy for aberrant glycolipid metabolism in liver.

Project description:Background: Autophagy is an essential cellular process involving the self-degradation and recycling of organelles, proteins, and cellular debris. Recent research has shown that autophagy plays a significant role in the occurrence and development of kidney diseases. However, there is a lack of bibliometric analysis regarding the relationship between autophagy and kidney diseases. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted by searching for literature related to autophagy and kidney diseases in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database from 2000 to 2022. Data processing was carried out using R package "Bibliometrix", VOSviewers, and CiteSpace. Results: A total of 4,579 articles related to autophagy and kidney diseases were collected from various countries. China and the United States were the main countries contributing to the publications. The number of publications in this field showed a year-on-year increasing trend, with open-access journals playing a major role in driving the literature output. Nanjing Medical University in China, Osaka University in Japan, and the University of Pittsburgh in the United States were the main research institutions. The journal "International journal of molecular sciences" had the highest number of publications, while "Autophagy" was the most influential journal in the field. These articles were authored by 18,583 individuals, with Dong, Zheng; Koya, Daisuke; and Kume, Shinji being the most prolific authors, and Dong, Zheng being the most frequently co-cited author. Research on autophagy mainly focused on diabetic kidney diseases, acute kidney injury, and chronic kidney disease. "Autophagy", "apoptosis", and "oxidative stress" were the primary research hotspots. Topics such as "diabetic kidney diseases", "sepsis", "ferroptosis", "nrf2", "hypertension" and "pi3k" may represent potential future development trends. Research on autophagy has gradually focused on metabolic-related kidney diseases such as diabetic nephropathy and hypertension. Additionally, PI3K, NRF2, and ferroptosis have been recent research directions in the field of autophagy mechanisms. Conclusion: This is the first comprehensive bibliometric study summarizing the relationship between autophagy and kidney diseases. The findings aid in identifying recent research frontiers and hot topics, providing valuable references for scholars investigating the role of autophagy in kidney diseases.
