Three-Component Suzuki-Knoevenagel Synthesis of Merocyanine Libraries and Correlation Analyses of Their Oxidation Potentials and Optical Band Gaps.

ABSTRACT: The Suzuki coupling Knoevenagel condensation one-pot synthesis of boronic acids/esters, (hetero)aromatic bromo aldehydes and methylene active compounds is a highly practical consecutive three-component process to provide substance libraries with 60 donor-π-bridge-acceptor molecules, i.e., merocyanines in a broader sense, in moderate to excellent yield. As already seen with the naked eye, a broad variation of the optical properties becomes accessible using this practical synthetic tool. More systematically, correlation analyses upon plotting the optical band gaps against the first oxidation potentials of redox active systems of consanguineous series furnishes linear correlations and, by extension, two parameter plots (oxidation potential and emission maximum) planar correlations with the optical band gaps.

Band gap maps beyond the delocalization limit: correlation between optical band gaps and plasmon energies at the nanoscale.

Project description:Recent progresses in nanoscale semiconductor technology have heightened the need for measurements of band gaps with high spatial resolution. Band gap mapping can be performed through a combination of probe-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and monochromated electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), but are rare owing to the complexity of the experiments and the data analysis. Furthermore, although this method is far superior in terms of spatial resolution to any other techniques, it is still fundamentally resolution-limited due to inelastic delocalization of the EELS signal. In this work we have established a quantitative correlation between optical band gaps and plasmon energies using the Zn1-xCd x O/ZnO system as an example, thereby side-stepping the fundamental resolution limits of band gap measurements, and providing a simple and convenient approach to achieve band gap maps with unprecedented spatial resolution.

Large-Scale Benchmark of Exchange-Correlation Functionals for the Determination of Electronic Band Gaps of Solids.

Project description:We compile a large data set designed for the efficient benchmarking of exchange-correlation functionals for the calculation of electronic band gaps. The data set comprises information on the experimental structure and band gap of 472 nonmagnetic materials and includes a diverse group of covalent-, ionic-, and van der Waals-bonded solids. We used it to benchmark 12 functionals, ranging from standard local and semilocal functionals, passing through meta-generalized-gradient approximations, and several hybrids. We included both general purpose functionals, like the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof approximation, and functionals specifically crafted for the determination of band gaps. The comparison of experimental and theoretical band gaps shows that the modified Becke-Johnson is at the moment the best available density functional, closely followed by the Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof screened hybrid from 2006 and the high-local-exchange generalized-gradient approximation.

Building addressable libraries: site-selective Suzuki reactions on microelectrode arrays.

Project description:A site-selective Suzuki reaction has been developed for use on microelectrode arrays. The reaction conditions employed are similar to those used to achieve site-selective Heck reactions. The reaction can be run with either an aryliodide attached to the surface of the array and an arylboronic acid in solution or with an arylboronic acid attached to the surface of the array and an arylbromide in solution. Both allyl acetate and air are effective confining agents for the reaction. The reactions are compatible with arrays containing either 1024 microelectrodes cm(-2) or 12,544 microelectrodes cm(-2).

Vivid colours in hyperuniform complex-index photonic structures by resonant interference of photonic band gaps and optical band gaps.

Project description:Hyperuniform photonic structures (HPSs) have been doped with complex index materials to increase their reflectivity and colour expression range. HPSs synthesized using dielectric SiO2 nanoparticles have been mixed with a small amount of dopant nanoparticles (c d ≤ 1%) having a complex refractive index. Various dyes including Sudan I, Sudan Blue II, Alizarin yellow GG, Bromocresol purple and polydopamine (PDA) are used as dopants. Large reflectivity enhancements of HPSs (∼100%) are observed by resonant interference of photonic band gaps (PBGs) and optical band gaps (OBGs). Reflectivity enhancements are observed only when PBGs of HPSs match with OBGs of dopants. The colour expression range of HPS increases by 600% by doping with melanine-like PDA nanoparticles, which have the imaginary part of the refractive index in whole visible range.

Origin of band gaps in 3d perovskite oxides.

Project description:With their broad range of properties, ABO3 transition metal perovskite oxides have long served as a platform for device applications and as a testing bed for different condensed matter theories. Their insulating character and structural distortions are often ascribed to dynamical electronic correlations within a universal, symmetry-conserving paradigm. This view restricts predictive theory to complex computational schemes, going beyond density functional theory (DFT). Here, we show that, if one allows symmetry-breaking energy-lowering crystal symmetry reductions and electronic instabilities within DFT, one successfully and systematically recovers the trends in the observed band gaps, magnetic moments, type of magnetic and crystallographic ground state, bond disproportionation and ligand hole effects, Mott vs. charge transfer insulator behaviors, and the amplitude of structural deformation modes including Jahn-Teller in low temperature spin-ordered and high temperature disordered paramagnetic phases. We then provide a classification of the four mechanisms of gap formation and establish DFT as a reliable base platform to study the ground state properties in complex oxides.

Phoamtonic designs yield sizeable 3D photonic band gaps.

Project description:We show that it is possible to construct foam-based heterostructures with complete photonic band gaps. Three-dimensional foams are promising candidates for the self-organization of large photonic networks with combinations of physical characteristics that may be useful for applications. The largest band gap found is based on 3D Weaire-Phelan foam, a structure that was originally introduced as a solution to the Kelvin problem of finding the 3D tessellation composed of equal-volume cells that has the least surface area. The photonic band gap has a maximal size of 16.9% (at a volume fraction of 21.6% for a dielectric contrast [Formula: see text]) and a high degree of isotropy, properties that are advantageous in designing photonic waveguides and circuits. We also present results for 2 other foam-based heterostructures based on Kelvin and C15 foams that have somewhat smaller but still significant band gaps.

Auto-generated database of semiconductor band gaps using ChemDataExtractor.

Project description:Large-scale databases of band gap information about semiconductors that are curated from the scientific literature have significant usefulness for computational databases and general semiconductor materials research. This work presents an auto-generated database of 100,236 semiconductor band gap records, extracted from 128,776 journal articles with their associated temperature information. The database was produced using ChemDataExtractor version 2.0, a 'chemistry-aware' software toolkit that uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine-learning methods to extract chemical data from scientific documents. The modified Snowball algorithm of ChemDataExtractor has been extended to incorporate nested models, optimized by hyperparameter analysis, and used together with the default NLP parsers to achieve optimal quality of the database. Evaluation of the database shows a weighted precision of 84% and a weighted recall of 65%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest open-source non-computational band gap database to date. Database records are available in CSV, JSON, and MongoDB formats, which are machine readable and can assist data mining and semiconductor materials discovery.

3-D phononic crystals with ultra-wide band gaps.

Project description:In this paper gradient based topology optimization (TO) is used to discover 3-D phononic structures that exhibit ultra-wide normalized all-angle all-mode band gaps. The challenging computational task of repeated 3-D phononic band-structure evaluations is accomplished by a combination of a fast mixed variational eigenvalue solver and distributed Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) parallel computations. The TO algorithm utilizes the material distribution-based approach and a gradient-based optimizer. The design sensitivity for the mixed variational eigenvalue problem is derived using the adjoint method and is implemented through highly efficient vectorization techniques. We present optimized results for two-material simple cubic (SC), body centered cubic (BCC), and face centered cubic (FCC) crystal structures and show that in each of these cases different initial designs converge to single inclusion network topologies within their corresponding primitive cells. The optimized results show that large phononic stop bands for bulk wave propagation can be achieved at lower than close packed spherical configurations leading to lighter unit cells. For tungsten carbide - epoxy crystals we identify all angle all mode normalized stop bands exceeding 100%, which is larger than what is possible with only spherical inclusions.

Optimal design of lattice structures for controllable extremal band gaps.

Project description:This paper presents very large complete band gaps at low audible frequency ranges tailored by gradient-based design optimizations of periodic two- and three-dimensional lattices. From the given various lattice topologies, we proceed to create and enlarge band gap properties through controlling neutral axis configuration and cross-section thickness of beam structures, while retaining the periodicity and size of the unit cell. Beam neutral axis configuration and cross-section thickness are parameterized by higher order B-spline basis functions within the isogeometric analysis framework, and controlled by an optimization algorithm using adjoint sensitivity. Our optimal curved designs show much more enhanced wave attenuation properties at audible low frequency region than previously reported straight or simple undulated geometries. Results of harmonic response analyses of beam structures consisting of a number of unit cells demonstrate the validity of the optimal designs. A plane wave propagation in infinite periodic lattice is analyzed within a unit cell using the Bloch periodic boundary condition.

Origin of band gaps in graphene on hexagonal boron nitride.

Project description:Recent progress in preparing well-controlled two-dimensional van der Waals heterojunctions has opened up a new frontier in materials physics. Here we address the intriguing energy gaps that are sometimes observed when a graphene sheet is placed on a hexagonal boron nitride substrate, demonstrating that they are produced by an interesting interplay between structural and electronic properties, including electronic many-body exchange interactions. Our theory is able to explain the observed gap behaviour by accounting first for the structural relaxation of graphene's carbon atoms when placed on a boron nitride substrate, and then for the influence of the substrate on low-energy π-electrons located at relaxed carbon atom sites. The methods we employ can be applied to many other van der Waals heterojunctions.
