Project description:Iron-based Prussian blue analogs are promising low-cost and easily prepared cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries. Their materials quality and electrochemical performance are heavily reliant on the precipitation process. Here we report a controllable precipitation method to synthesize high-performance Prussian blue for sodium-ion storage. Characterization of the nucleation and evolution processes of the highly crystalline Prussian blue microcubes reveals a rhombohedral structure that exhibits high initial Coulombic efficiency, excellent rate performance, and cycling properties. The phase transitions in the as-obtained material are investigated by synchrotron in situ powder X-ray diffraction, which shows highly reversible structural transformations between rhombohedral, cubic, and tetragonal structures upon sodium-ion (de)intercalations. Moreover, the Prussian blue material from a large-scale synthesis process shows stable cycling performance in a pouch full cell over 1000 times. We believe that this work could pave the way for the real application of Prussian blue materials in sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:As a promising high-capacity anode material for Li-ion batteries, NiMn2O4 always suffers from the poor intrinsic conductivity and the architectural collapse originating from the volume expansion during cycle. Herein, a combined structure and architecture modulation is proposed to tackle concurrently the two handicaps, via a facile and well-controlled solvothermal approach to synthesize NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 mesocrystals with superlattice structure and hollow multi-porous architecture. It is demonstrated that the obtained NiCo1.5Mn0.5O4 sample is made up of a new mixed-phase NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 compound system, with a high charge capacity of 532.2 mAh g-1 with 90.4% capacity retention after 100 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1. The enhanced electrochemical performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the superlattice structure and the hollow multi-porous architecture of the NiMn2O4/NiCo2O4 compound. The superlattice structure can improve ionic conductivity to enhance charge transport kinetics of the bulk material, while the hollow multi-porous architecture can provide enough void spaces to alleviate the architectural change during cycling, and shorten the lithium ions diffusion and electron-transportation distances.

Project description:Soft structures in nature, such as protein assemblies, can organize reversibly into functional and often hierarchical architectures through noncovalent interactions. Molecularly encoding this dynamic capability in synthetic materials has remained an elusive goal. We report on hydrogels of peptide-DNA conjugates and peptides that organize into superstructures of intertwined filaments that disassemble upon the addition of molecules or changes in charge density. Experiments and simulations demonstrate that this response requires large-scale spatial redistribution of molecules directed by strong noncovalent interactions among them. Simulations also suggest that the chemically reversible structures can only occur within a limited range of supramolecular cohesive energies. Storage moduli of the hydrogels change reversibly as superstructures form and disappear, as does the phenotype of neural cells in contact with these materials.

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries are commonly regarded as a promising candidate in large-scale energy storage. Layered iron/manganese oxide cathodes receive extensive attentions due to the element abundance and large theoretical capacity. However, these materials usually undergo obvious degradation of electrochemical performance due to the tendency of Mn dissolution and Fe migration during continuous sodium release and uptake. Herein, a strategy of anion-cation synergetic redox is proposed to suppress the structural deterioration originated from overusing the electrochemical activity of transition-metal ions, and decreased lattice strain as well as superior electrochemical performance are realized simultaneously. Results show that the Na0.8 Li0.2 Fe0.2 Mn0.6 O2 (NLFM) electrode is highly resistant to the erosion of moisture that is distinct from the traditional Mn/Fe-based electrodes. Moreover, the NLFM electrode demonstrates solid solution behavior without phase transition during cycles. The ultra-small volume change of 0.85% is ascribed to the negligible manganese dissolution and invisible transition-metal migration. The high-stable layered structure assures superior reversible capacity of ≈165 mA h g-1 , excellent rate capability, and splendid capacity retention of over 98.3% with 100 cycles. The findings deepen the understanding of the synergy between anion and cation redox and provide new insights to design the high-stable layered cathode for sodium-ion batteries.

Project description:Nitrogen doped carbon nanoparticles on highly porous carbon nanofiber electrodes were successfully synthesized via combining centrifugal spinning, chemical polymerization of pyrrole and a two-step heat treatment. Nanoparticle-on-nanofiber morphology with highly porous carbon nanotube like channels were observed from SEM and TEM images. Nitrogen doped carbon nanoparticles on highly porous carbon nanofiber (N-PCNF) electrodes exhibited excellent cycling and C-rate performance with a high reversible capacity of around 280 mA h g-1 in sodium ion batteries. Moreover, at 1000 mA g-1, a high reversible capacity of 172 mA h g-1 was observed after 300 cycles. The superior electrochemical properties were attributed to a highly porous structure with enlarged d-spacings, enriched defects and active sites due to nitrogen doping. The electrochemical results prove that N-PCNF electrodes are promising electrode materials for high performance sodium ion batteries.

Project description:The high-entropy materials (HEM) have attracted increasing attention in catalysis and energy storage due to their large configurational entropy and multiunique properties. However, it is failed in alloying-type anode due to their Li-inactive transition-metal compositions. Herein, inspired by high-entropy concept, the Li-active elements instead of transition-metal ones are introduced for metal-phosphorus synthesis. Interestingly, a new Znx Gey Cuz Siw P2 solid solution is successfully synthesized as proof of concept, which is first verified to cubic system in F-43m. More specially, such Znx Gey Cuz Siw P2 possesses wide-range tunable region from 9911 to 4466, in which the Zn0.5 Ge0.5 Cu0.5 Si0.5 P2 accounts for the highest configurational entropy. When served as anode, Znx Gey Cuz Siw P2 delivers large capacity (>1500 mAh g-1 ) and suitable plateau (≈0.5 V) for energy storage, breaking the conventional view that HEM is helpless for alloying anode due to its transition-metal compositions. Among them, the Zn0.5 Ge0.5 Cu0.5 Si0.5 P2 exhibits the highest initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) (93%), Li-diffusivity (1.11 × 10-10 ), lowest volume-expansion (34.5%), and best rate performances (551 mAh g-1 at 6400 mA g-1 ) owing to its largest configurational entropy. Possible mechanism reveals the high entropy stabilization enables good accommodation of volume change and fast electronic transportation, thus supporting superior cyclability and rate performances. This large configurational entropy strategy in metal-phosphorus solid solution may open new avenues to develop other high-entropy materials for advanced energy storage.

Project description:It is a challenge to prepare organic electrodes for sodium-ion batteries with long cycle life and high capacity. The highly reactive radical intermediates generated during the sodiation/desodiation process could be a critical issue because of undesired side reactions. Here we present durable electrodes with a stabilized α-C radical intermediate. Through the resonance effect as well as steric effects, the excessive reactivity of the unpaired electron is successfully suppressed, thus developing an electrode with stable cycling for over 2,000 cycles with 96.8% capacity retention. In addition, the α-radical demonstrates reversible transformation between three states: C=C; α-C·radical; and α-C- anion. Such transformation provides additional Na+ storage equal to more than 0.83 Na+ insertion per α-C radical for the electrodes. The strategy of intermediate radical stabilization could be enlightening in the design of organic electrodes with enhanced cycling life and energy storage capability.

Project description:Na-based dual-ion batteries (DIBs) are a class of post-lithium technology with advantages including extremely fast charging, cost-effectiveness, and high natural abundance of raw materials. Operating up to high voltages (≈5.0 V), the decomposition of classic carbonate-based electrolyte formulations and the subsequent fade of capacity continues to be a major drawback in the development of these systems. Here, the performance of a Na-DIB was investigated in different commonly employed electrolyte system, and a highly concentrated (3 m NaPF6 ) and fluorine-rich carbonate-based formulation was optimized to achieve a good performance when compared with literature (based on energy and power density, calculated at coin cell and only using the active mass of active materials).

Project description:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are a promising grid-level storage technology due to the abundance and low cost of sodium. The development of new electrolytes for SIBs is imperative since it impacts battery life and capacity. Currently, sodium hexafluorophosphate (NaPF6 ) is used as the benchmark salt, but is highly hygroscopic and generates toxic HF. This work describes the synthesis of a series of sodium borate salts, with electrochemical studies revealing that Na[B(hfip)4 ]⋅DME (hfip=hexafluoroisopropyloxy, Oi PrF ) and Na[B(pp)2 ] (pp=perfluorinated pinacolato, O2 C2 (CF3 )4 ) have excellent electrochemical performance. The [B(pp)2 ]- anion also exhibits a high tolerance to air and water. Both electrolytes give more stable electrode-electrolyte interfaces than conventionally used NaPF6 , as demonstrated by impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Furthermore, they give greater cycling stability and comparable capacity to NaPF6 for SIBs, as shown in commercial pouch cells.

This review aims to provide an exhaustive discussion about the state-of-the-art in novel high-performance anodes and cathodes being currently analyzed, and the variety of advantages they demonstrate in various critically important parameters, such as electronic conductivity, structural stability, cycle life, and reversibility.
