Project description:Membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) or solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) offer unprecedented opportunities for highly efficient and cost-competitive solvent recovery in the pharmaceutical industry. Here, we describe small-flake graphene oxide (SFGO) membranes for high-performance OSN applications. Our strategy exploits lateral dimension control to engineer shorter and less tortuous transport pathways for solvent molecules. By using La3+ as a cross-linker and spacer for intercalation, the SFGO membrane selective layer was stabilized, and size-dependent ultrafast selective molecular transport was achieved. The methanol permeance was up to 2.9-fold higher than its large-flake GO (LFGO) counterpart, with high selectivity toward three organic dyes. More importantly, the SFGO-La3+ membrane demonstrated robust stability for at least 24 hours under hydrodynamic stresses that are representative of realistic OSN operating conditions. These desirable attributes stem from the La3+ cross-linking, which forms uniquely strong coordination bonds with oxygen-containing functional groups of SFGO. Other cations were found to be ineffective.

Project description:Engineering membranes for molecular separation in organic solvents is still a big challenge. When the selectivity increases, the permeability tends to drastically decrease, increasing the energy demands for the separation process. Ideally, organic solvent nanofiltration membranes should be thin to enhance the permeant transport, have a well-tailored nanoporosity and high stability in harsh solvents. Here, we introduce a trianglamine macrocycle as a molecular building block for cross-linked membranes, prepared by facile interfacial polymerization, for high-performance selective separations. The membranes were prepared via a two-in-one strategy, enabled by the amine macrocycle, by simultaneously reducing the thickness of the thin-film layers (<10 nm) and introducing permanent intrinsic porosity within the membrane (6.3 Å). This translates into a superior separation performance for nanofiltration operation, both in polar and apolar solvents. The hyper-cross-linked network significantly improved the stability in various organic solvents, while the amine host macrocycle provided specific size and charge molecular recognition for selective guest molecules separation. By employing easily customized molecular hosts in ultrathin membranes, we can significantly tailor the selectivity on-demand without compromising the overall permeability of the system.

Project description:Layered two-dimensional materials can potentially be utilized for organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabrication owing to their precise molecular sieving by the interlayer structure and excellent stability in harsh conditions. Nevertheless, the extensive tortuosity of nanochannels and bulky solvent molecules impede rapid permeability. Herein, nanoporous graphene (NG) with a high density of sp2 carbon domain was synthesized via sequential thermal pore activation of graphene oxide (GO) and microwave-assisted reduction. Due to the smooth sp2 carbon domain surfaces and dense nanopores, the microwave-treated nanoporous graphene membrane exhibited ultrafast organic solvent permeance (e.g., IPA: 2278 LMH/bar) with excellent stability under practical cross-flow conditions. Furthermore, the membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is switchable from 500 Da size of molecule to sub-nanometer-size molecules depending on the solvent type, and this switching occurs spontaneously with solvent change. These properties indicate feasibility of multiple (both binary and ternary) organic mixture separation using a single membrane. The nanochannel structure effect on solvent transport is also investigated using computation calculations.

Project description:Copper-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different oxidation states and near-uniform particle sizes have been successfully synthesized. Mixed-matrix polyimide membranes incorporating 0.1-7 wt% of Cu(II) benzene-1,2,5-tricarboxylic acid (Cu(II)BTC), Cu(I/II)BTC and Cu(I) 1,2-ethanedisulfonic acid (EDS) (Cu(I)EDS) MOFs were fabricated via non-solvent-induced phase inversion process. These membranes are found to be solvent resistant and mechanically stable. Liquid phase nanofiltration experiments were performed to separate toluene from n-heptane at room temperature. These membranes demonstrate preferential adsorption and permeation of the aromatic toluene over aliphatic n-heptane. The amount of MOF particles incorporated, the oxidation state of the Cu ion and membrane, and barrier layer thickness have a significant impact on the separation factor. Toluene/heptane separation factor at 1.47, 1.67 and 1.79 can be obtained for membranes incorporating 7 wt% Cu(II)BTC, Cu(I/II)BTC and Cu(I)EDS respectively at room temperature.

Project description:This study reports a systematic investigation of fine-tuning the filtration performance of nanofiltration membranes with biophenol coatings to produce solvent-resistant membranes with 390-1550 g mol-1 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) and 0.5-40 L m-2 h-1 bar-1 permeance. Six kinds of inexpensive, commercial biophenols (dopamine, tannic acid, vanillyl alcohol, eugenol, morin, and quercetin) were subjected to identical oxidant-promoted polymerization to coat six kinds of loose asymmetric membrane supports: polyimide (PI), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polysulfone (PSf), polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF), polybenzimidazole (PBI), and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). The coatings were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the morphologies were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The long-term stability of 42 membranes were tested in 12 organic solvents, including emerging green solvents MeTHF and Cyrene. The biophenol coatings led to tighter membranes with a decrease in MWCO of 12-79% at a penalty of a 22-92% permeance decrease in acetone.

Project description:The advantages of two dimensional covalent organic framework membranes to achieve high flux have been demonstrated, but the capability of easy structural modification to manipulate the pore size has not been fully explored yet. Here we report the use of the Langmuir-Blodgett method to synthesize two ultrathin covalent organic framework membranes (TFP-DPF and TFP-DNF) that have a similar framework structure to our previously reported covalent organic framework membrane (TFP-DHF) but different lengths of carbon chains aiming to rationally control the pore size. The membrane permeation results in the applications of organic solvent nanofiltration and molecular sieving of organic dyes showed a systematic shift of the membrane flux and molecular weight cut-off correlated to the pore size change. These results enhanced our fundamental understanding of transport through uniform channels at nanometer scales. Pore engineering of the covalent organic framework membranes was demonstrated for the first time.

Project description:Organic solvent-stable membranes exhibiting strong selectivity and high permeance have the potential to transform energy utilization in chemical separation processes. A key goal is developing materials with uniform, well-defined pores at the 1-nm scale, with sizes that can be tuned in small increments with high fidelity. Here, we demonstrate a class of organic solvent-stable nanoporous membranes derived from self-assembled liquid crystal mesophases that display such characteristics and elucidate their transport properties. The transport-regulating dimensions are defined by the mesophase geometry and can be controlled in increments of ~0.1 nm by modifying the chemical structure of the mesogen or the composition of the mesophase. The highly ordered nanostructure affords previously unidentified opportunities for the systematic design of organic solvent nanofiltration membranes with tailored selectivity and permeability and for understanding and modeling rejection in nanoscale flows. Hence, these membranes represent progress toward the goal of enabling precise organic solvent nanofiltration.

Project description:Organic solvents are widely used in pharmaceutical and chemical industries. Their separation and recovery account for a large part of energy consumption and capital cost in many industrial processes. MoS2 membranes with varying pore sizes (0.6 nm pore with S atoms, 0.7 nm pore with Mo atoms, 1.3 nm pore with S atoms, 1.4 nm pore with Mo atoms) were investigated as organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes using molecular simulation in this study. The fluxes of five polar solvents (methanol, ethanol, propanol, acetonitrile and acetone) and a nonpolar solvent (n-hexane) were predicted. Although the 0.6 nm S pore has a smaller pore size, it has a better flux for some organic solvents than the 0.7 nm Mo pore. This selective behavior of molybdenum disulfide was confirmed by calculating the potential of mean force (PMF) of each solvent molecule. The PMFs show that polar solvents face a higher energy barrier through the pore, and greater resistance needs to be overcome. After testing the permeability of solvent by experiment and simulation, the flux changes of different solvents have the same trend in experiment and simulation. The solvent permeability was slightly affected in the presence of solute (acetaminophen), and MoS2 membranes with small pores demonstrated 100% rejection rate for acetaminophen. This study confirmed that pore chemistry and pore size play important roles in OSN, and MoS2 is a promising OSN membrane for the recovery of organic solvents.

Project description:Poly-(4,4'-oxydiphenylene) pyromellitimide or Kapton is the most widely available polyimide with high chemical and thermal stability. It has great prospects for use as a membrane material for filtering organic media due to its complete insolubility. However, the formation of membranes based on it, at the moment, is an unsolved problem. The study corresponds to the rediscovery of poly(4,4'-oxydiphenylene-pyromellitimide)-based soluble copoly(urethane-imides) as membrane polymers of a new generation. It is shown that the physical structure of PUI films prepared by the solution method becomes porous after the removal of urethane blocks from the polymer, and the pore size varies depending on the conditions of thermolysis and subsequent hydrolysis of the membrane polymer. The film annealed at 170 °C with a low destruction degree of polycaprolactam blocks exhibits the properties of a nanofiltration membrane. It is stable in the aprotic solvent DMF and has a Remasol Brilliant Blue R retention coefficient of 95%. After the hydrolysis of thermally treated films in acidic media, ultrafiltration size 66-82 nm pores appear, which leads to an increase in the permeate flow by more than two orders of magnitude. This circumstance provides opportunities for controlling the membrane polymer structure for further optimization of the performance characteristics of filtration membranes based on it. Thus, we proposed a new preparation method of ultra- and nanofiltration membranes based on poly(4,4'-oxydiphenylene-pyromellitimide) that are stable in aprotic solvents.

Project description:Given the huge significance of organic solvents in several industrial processes, the use of membranes for recovering the solvents has evolved into an industrially viable process. The current work has been focused on studying the effect of minor changes in the chemistry of the reacting monomers on the organic solvent nanofiltration/solvent resistance nanofiltration (OSN/SRNF) performance of the membranes. The two aliphatic amines with varying aliphatic chain lengths between primary and secondary amines were selected for this purpose. Based on the structure of the resultant active layer, the Janus nanofiltration performance of the membrane was evaluated. The two membranes, 4A-TPC@crosslinked PAN and 4A-3P@crosslinked PAN were fabricated by using two different tetra-amines, 4A (N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)ethylenediamine) and 4A-3P (N,N'-Bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propanediamine) crosslinked with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) on a crosslinked polyacryonitrile (PAN) support through interfacial polymerization (IP). The presence of multiple hydrophobic -CH2- groups in the structures of the aliphatic amines 4A and 4A-3P develops hydrophobic sites in the hydrophilic polyamide active layers of the membranes. In addition, 4A has two secondary amino groups separated by ethylene (-CH2-CH2-) groups, whereas in 4A-3P, the two secondary amino groups are separated by propylene (-CH2-CH2-CH2-) leading to variation in the structural features and performance of the two membranes. Both membranes were fully characterized by several membrane characterization techniques and applied for OSN/SRNF using both polar (methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol) and non-polar (n-hexane and toluene) solvents. Different dyes (Congo red, Eriochrome black T, and Methylene blue) were used as model solutes during the filtration experiment. The 4A-3P-TPC@crosslinked PAN showed n-hexane and toluene flux of 109.9 LMH and 95.5 LMH, respectively. The Congo red (CR) showed the highest rejection, reaching 99.1% for the 4A-TPC@Crosslinked PAN membrane and 98.8% for the 4A-3P-TPC@Crosslinked PAN membrane.
