Project description:The utilization of organic devices as pressure-sensing elements in artificial intelligence and healthcare applications represents a fascinating opportunity for the next-generation electronic products. To satisfy the critical requirements of these promising applications, the low-cost construction of large-area ultra-sensitive organic pressure devices with outstanding flexibility is highly desired. Here we present flexible suspended gate organic thin-film transistors (SGOTFTs) as a model platform that enables ultra-sensitive pressure detection. More importantly, the unique device geometry of SGOTFTs allows the fine-tuning of their sensitivity by the suspended gate. An unprecedented sensitivity of 192?kPa(-1), a low limit-of-detection pressure of <0.5?Pa and a short response time of 10?ms were successfully realized, allowing the real-time detection of acoustic waves. These excellent sensing properties of SGOTFTs, together with their advantages of facile large-area fabrication and versatility in detecting various pressure signals, make SGOTFTs a powerful strategy for spatial pressure mapping in practical applications.

Project description:Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have attracted considerable interest in the context of wearable and implantable biosensors due to their remarkable signal amplification combined with seamless integration into biological systems. These properties underlie OECTs' potential utility across a range of bioelectronic applications. One of the main challenges to their practical applications is the mechanical limitation of PEDOT:PSS, the most typical conductive polymer used as a channel layer, when the OECTs are applied to implantable and stretchable bioelectronics. In this work, we address this critical issue by employing natural rubber latex (NRL) as an additive in PEDOT:PSS to improve flexibility and stretchability of the OECT channels. Although the inclusion of NRL leads to a decrease in transconductance, mainly due to a reduced carrier mobility from 0.3 to 0.1 cm2/V·s, the OECTs maintain satisfactory transconductance, exceeding 5 mS. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the OECTs exhibit excellent mechanical stability while maintaining their performance even after 100 repetitive bending cycles. This work, therefore, suggests that the NRL/PEDOT:PSS composite film can be deployed for wearable/implantable applications, where high mechanical stability is needed. This finding opens up new avenues for practical use of OECTs in more robust and versatile wearable and implantable biosensors.

Project description:The detection of chemical messenger molecules, such as neurotransmitters in nervous systems, demands high sensitivity to measure small variations, selectivity to eliminate interferences from analogues, and compliant devices to be minimally invasive to soft tissue. Here, an organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) embedded in a flexible polyimide substrate is utilized as transducer to realize a highly sensitive dopamine aptasensor. A split aptamer is tethered to a gold gate electrode and the analyte binding can be detected optionally either via an amperometric or a potentiometric transducer principle. The amperometric sensor can detect dopamine with a limit of detection of 1 μM, while the novel flexible OECT-based biosensor exhibits an ultralow detection limit down to the concentration of 0.5 fM, which is lower than all previously reported electrochemical sensors for dopamine detection. The low detection limit can be attributed to the intrinsic amplification properties of OECTs. Furthermore, a significant response to dopamine inputs among interfering analogues hallmarks the selective detection capabilities of this sensor. The high sensitivity and selectivity, as well as the flexible properties of the OECT-based aptasensor, are promising features for their integration in neuronal probes for the in vitro or in vivo detection of neurochemical signals.

Project description:The development of transistors with high gain is essential for applications ranging from switching elements and drivers to transducers for chemical and biological sensing. Organic transistors have become well-established based on their distinct advantages, including ease of fabrication, synthetic freedom for chemical functionalization, and the ability to take on unique form factors. These devices, however, are largely viewed as belonging to the low-end of the performance spectrum. Here we present organic electrochemical transistors with a transconductance in the mS range, outperforming transistors from both traditional and emerging semiconductors. The transconductance of these devices remains fairly constant from DC up to a frequency of the order of 1 kHz, a value determined by the process of ion transport between the electrolyte and the channel. These devices, which continue to work even after being crumpled, are predicted to be highly relevant as transducers in biosensing applications.

Project description:Ions dissolved in aqueous media play a fundamental role in plants, animals, and humans. Therefore, the in situ quantification of the ion concentration in aqueous media is gathering relevant interest in several fields including biomedical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, healthcare products, water and food test and control, agriculture industry and security. The fundamental limitation of the state-of-art transistor-based approaches is the intrinsic trade-off between sensitivity, ion concentration range and operating voltage. Here we show a current-driven configuration based on organic electrochemical transistors that overcomes this fundamental limit. The measured ion sensitivity exceeds by one order of magnitude the Nernst limit at an operating voltage of few hundred millivolts. The ion sensitivity normalized to the supply voltage is larger than 1200?mV?V-1 dec-1, which is the largest value ever reported for ion-sensitive transistors. The proposed approach is general and can be extended to any transistor technology, thus opening opportunities for high-performance bioelectronics.

Project description:Organic Electrochemical Transistors are versatile sensors that became essential for the field of organic bioelectronics. However, despite their importance, an incomplete understanding of their working mechanism is currently precluding a targeted design of Organic Electrochemical Transistors and it is still challenging to formulate precise design rules guiding materials development in this field. Here, it is argued that current capacitive device models neglect lateral ion currents in the transistor channel and therefore fail to describe the equilibrium state of Organic Electrochemical Transistors. An improved model is presented, which shows that lateral ion currents lead to an accumulation of ions at the drain contact, which significantly alters the transistor behavior. Overall, these results show that a better understanding of the interface between the organic semiconductor and the drain electrode is needed to reach a full understanding of Organic Electrochemical Transistors.

Project description:Organic Electrochemical transistors (OECTs) present unique features for their strategic combination with biomedical interfaces, simple and low voltage operation regime and sensing ability in aqueous environment, but they still lack selectivity, so that a significant effort in research is devoted to overcome this limitation. Here, we focus on the diffusion properties of molecular species in the electrolyte, which opportunely analyzed, modeled and compared to experimental data, serve as a simple and direct key factor in the recognition of species during OECT sensing. Specifically, we model the transient behavior of an OECT considering the effect of diffusion of the target species in the electrolyte. In doing so, we develop a general method that can be used to differentiate and distinguish different molecules from a complex mixture, on the basis of their diffusivity and thus mass. More importantly, the model can be realistically used to determine the physical characteristics of the transported species in a solution from a simple fitting procedure. On the basis of the obtained results, we discuss the contribution that our study could bring to OECT architecture to realize a new generation of devices with improved sensitivity, selectivity and reliability.

Project description:Plants are able to sense and respond to a myriad of external stimuli, using different signal transduction pathways, including electrical signaling. The ability to monitor plant responses is essential not only for fundamental plant science, but also to gain knowledge on how to interface plants with technology. Still, the field of plant electrophysiology remains rather unexplored when compared to its animal counterpart. Indeed, most studies continue to rely on invasive techniques or on bulky inorganic electrodes that oftentimes are not ideal for stable integration with plant tissues. On the other hand, few studies have proposed novel approaches to monitor plant signals, based on non-invasive conformable electrodes or even organic transistors. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are particularly promising for electrophysiology as they are inherently amplification devices, they operate at low voltages, can be miniaturized, and be fabricated in flexible and conformable substrates. Thus, in this study, we characterize OECTs as viable tools to measure plant electrical signals, comparing them to the performance of the current standard, Ag/AgCl electrodes. For that, we focused on two widely studied plant signals: the Venus flytrap (VFT) action potentials elicited by mechanical stimulation of its sensitive trigger hairs, and the wound response of Arabidopsis thaliana. We found that OECTs are able to record these signals without distortion and with the same resolution as Ag/AgCl electrodes and that they offer a major advantage in terms of signal noise, which allow them to be used in field conditions. This work establishes these organic bioelectronic devices as non-invasive tools to monitor plant signaling that can provide insight into plant processes in their natural environment.

Project description:Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) underpin a range of emerging technologies, from bioelectronics to neuromorphic computing, owing to their unique coupling of electronic and ionic charge carriers. In this context, various OECT systems exhibit significant hysteresis in their transfer curve, which is frequently leveraged to achieve non-volatility. Meanwhile, a general understanding of its physical origin is missing. Here, we introduce a thermodynamic framework that readily explains the emergence of bistable OECT operation via the interplay of enthalpy and entropy. We validate this model through temperature-resolved characterizations, material manipulation, and thermal imaging. Further, we reveal deviations from Boltzmann statistics for the subthreshold swing and reinterpret existing literature. Capitalizing on these findings, we finally demonstrate a single-OECT Schmitt trigger, thus compacting a multi-component circuit into a single device. These insights provide a fundamental advance for OECT physics and its application in non-conventional computing, where symmetry-breaking phenomena are pivotal to unlock new paradigms of information processing.

Project description:Ions are ubiquitous biological regulators playing a key role for vital processes in animals and plants. The combined detection of ion concentration and real-time monitoring of small variations with respect to the resting conditions is a multiscale functionality providing important information on health states. This multiscale functionality is still an open challenge for current ion sensing approaches. Here we show multiscale real-time and high-sensitivity ion detection with complementary organic electrochemical transistors amplifiers. The ion-sensing amplifier integrates in the same device both selective ion-to-electron transduction and local signal amplification demonstrating a sensitivity larger than 2300 mV V-1 dec-1, which overcomes the fundamental limit. It provides both ion detection over a range of five orders of magnitude and real-time monitoring of variations two orders of magnitude lower than the detected concentration, viz. multiscale ion detection. The approach is generally applicable to several transistor technologies and opens opportunities for multifunctional enhanced bioelectronics.
